He had expected her to pull away, it was only natural, yet he could not help the anger that reared inside him with her actions. He did not allow it to show, regality, ego, smirk plastered across his face, and the stance of a hero- his cape flapping in the pull of the breeze at the open window. He cocked his head to one side as she looked him over, took the oppertuinity to do the same. Sarah had grown into a beautiful woman. She was tall and elegant, locks soft and flowing, full petal lips- dark eyes that held more storms than even she knew about. They were haunted now. He could see the division, and her words of almost-concern were hastily covered with brash remarks. What could he tell her? What should he answer? The truth? No, that would be entirely too open.
Instead he left a pause enough for the air to crackle with silence. Then he laughed. The sound was like waves breaking under soft summer lightning, coming from his chest in half broken sighs.

"I'm dying Sarah"

he said.

Sometimes he felt like he was. Would she believe him? He wasnt sure.

"Dying?" That single word fell from her lips tremblingly, her entire being suddenly filled with a sense of greif so strong that she was nearly doubled by it. She took a step back, staggered and fell in a very ungraceful heap next to her bed, staring up with wide eyes at the man that had been everything she'd expected and more. Everything in her fantasy's brought to horrible life, embodied in this creature that was more dream than man.

The strength of her emotions surprised her, though it was hardly the first time a abnormaly strong emotion had driven her off her feet. She had seen the effect of a truly terrible rage that she hadn't thought herself capable of, saw it in reflection turn her dark eyes into a roaring storm of violent proportions. The last time she had lost out on a part she'd been working her butt off to get, only to see it go to a woman with less experience than she had because the woman had slept with the directior. No talent, just raw sex appeal.

She grabbed her bed post and tried to get up, but found her legs unresponsive to her her commands. She felt like something had just carved a huge chunk out of her, and was now trying desperatly to fill that chunk with something else. Sarah's eyes held the mismatched ones of the Goblin King, and she knew from experience that her eyes no longer looked human either. Too much exposure to fae magic.

((again I appologise with full furvour for the lagging in my reply))

The strength of reaction that Sarah showed had been much more than he had been expecting, and it was all the great goblin king could do to keep the smile and shock from passing his face. He kept calm and stoic. The anti-hero.

It also took great fortitude for him not to step forward, in his quickening, to catch her from falling on heavy ground. It would not be seemly. She did not want to be touched. It hurt, but then he knew it was pretense. He could play games better than any human alive, and Sarah had subjected herself to them now. So, let the games begin.

He couldnt now let her know he was lying. Theoretically a Goblin King lived forever. Mentally? Emotionally? He wasnt even sure. He was loosing hope, maybe, maybe in that sense, he was already dead. He guessed that these games would test his own soul also.

___

The serpent laughter bubbled from his lips like acid and honey. His smirk was knowing, his eyes boring into her.

"you almost look like you care...or is it that you know the Labyrinth goes with me and you cant bare too see your 'friends' and 'dreams' go too?" he asked a little scathingly.

"No matter. All I need do is find and heir...."

he let the threat hang, formulating as he went yet another plan to include Toby.

((It's okay. Happy Holidays, by the way.))

"I will not play games with you, Jareth." She said, her voice hissing even though she was still unable to stand. "I am not so naive that I can't see that you are plotting against me and mine." She pulled herself up finally, though she couldn't remain standing and had to sit on her bed so that she wouldn't end up on the floor again. "I may not have any sort of magic to fight you with, but I do know that you can't take someone away unless they are wished away. I won't make the same mistake twice, and I've already run the labyrinth for Toby. You can't have him."

The thing about her not having the magic to fight was a lie that she'd held to for years. She knew she had magic, because he'd given it to her. The magic held in the spoken word, his power to manifest spoken dreams into reality. She kept this to herself, having no reason to remind him of this little fact during this battle of wills.

------

Sarah kept his gaze, almost flinching at the strange change in his emotions. Had she caused this near violent change in him, or was this his true self. "What I care about you stopped worrying over. How would you know anyway what true friendship was? You've spent so much time violating and destroying other people's dreams that you wouldn't know a real dream if it bit you in the a**. I would miss my friends, yes, and I would miss that world that I remember still fondly from my youth." Her gaze drifted away, her mind working around what she wanted to say. If he was going to be this way, then she could play hardball as well. "I feel sorry for you, Jareth. You live eternally, or close to it, but because you can't understand even the most basic of emotions without controlling them you will never know the true reason I turned you down, though I doubt you care any longer."

Her sentiment almost made him laugh and cry in the same moment, he felt something change in his chest, blossom with heat and anger and passion. How could she know? He'd lived so long that his emotions were hardly there it was true, but not for the reason she thought. After so long, he'd seen so much, it took alot to force a reaction in the Goblin King. Did she think that he'd come back to find her after so long on a whim? No love and anger were bounded by a ribbon of a border and he had been milling them over for so long he wasnt even sure he recognised them himself any more.

He was violent yes, but he always had been, was it her that changed him? only in part. Was it he that put this fire and vigor of anger in her? He was sure of it. No remorse for the wiked.

He levled her with a cool gaze. Keep emotion from others to stop yourself hurting. Was there point? Of course. He was the one with power here. Even if it was ripping at the seams.

"and what if Toby wishes himself away"
he asked, one eyebrow raised, dark khol smudged across the edges. He wasnt sure how likely that was at all, but something vicious in him wanted to tip the balance.

"He won't, because I made sure Toby didn't believe in you." She told him spitefully, her eyes darkening just a little as she spoke those words. It was true, she'd made sure Toby would never accidently send himself into the Goblin King's clutches, that he would never wish away another person. Sarah shook her head, rolling her shoulders and trying her hardest not to look like she was so affected by his presence.

What was it that kept her from banishing this man back to the place he'd come from? What was it about him that made her want to soothe him, to help with whatever problems had arisen since she'd run the Labyrinth? She didn't know the answer to these questions, and she was getting tired of playing verbal tag with him.

"I..." She paused, swallowing hard. "For whatever it means, I never stopped believing, even though I've had to grow up. I don't think I'll ever regret the mistake I made when I was fifteen, because it taught me things about myself that I hadn't known. I got to meet some of the most interesting people, that'll be my friends forever if I let them. So I believe in the magic of the Labyrinth, even if I don't get along with its King."

He blinked slightly, unsure of why she was admitting all this to him, even more unsure if he should continue to antagonise this girl...woman, when she was clearly stronger and more compassionate that he.
His expression stayed placid, he had only ever shown Sarah his emotions once before, and she had cast him down. He wouldnt start again now.

He wondered, at the back of his mind, as it ticked over and over, why did she still believe. Suddenly it clicked.
He spoke in the tone he had so long ago in a nusery far from the room they were now stood in. Authority, knowing, cruelty, and somewhere in the back of all of that layered thick like tar, there was a smattering of vehminant angst.

"I understand you Sarah" he began "I know you as I always did. You need to believe in us. You need the labyrinth to draw strength from. I gave you the power to overcome your fears"
PostPosted: Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:43 am

She looked at him, finally feeling her strength return as she continued to be in his presence. The look she gave him she'd never given to him before, had in fact never shown it to anyone. It was a look of a deep sadness, grown from years of repression and anger. "No, Jareth, you don't understand me. If you understood you wouldn't be doing this now, wouldn't be lashing out at me in an attempt to make me hate you, or to show that I'm still that spiteful little girl. I'm not the same person anymore, and I don't want to fight you. I'm going to ask you nicely to leave my house, my world, because I don't want to force you away. Go back to your labyrinth, Jareth. You've caused me enough heartache for one lifetime."

She turned full away from him, walking back to her mirror to gather strength from her friends and the memories she had of the time she had with them. She did not look directly at the mirror, because if she had she would have noticed that it showed a black that wasn't in her room.

Jareth felt something break inside him, years of lonliness after Sarah had beaten his Labyrinth had not been kind to him, she had proved herself the only person worthy of being his Queen, and in that she had left him to an eternity of spite. A crystal appared in his hand almost immidiatly, he brought it to his eye level, turning it slightly, as he saw misted dreams of her childhood fog in its depths. She had not conqered them all, some were impossible dreams of the young, and he held them in the palm of his hand. Leather creaked slightly as he pressed against the glassy surface, and in one fluid movement he threw the crystal at the mirror in Sarah's room. At her portal.

"And what makes you think you can force me?" he spat vheminantly as crystal and mirrored glass shattered in heart-breaking clarity, scattering across pine, and around her feet.

His breathing was heavy, his shoulders moving like leviathons under his tattered cloak.
"the Labyrinth is already dead" he said, more to himself, cold breath. Colder eyes.

She turned away from the shattered mirror, her arms crossed over her stomach as the shards fell in a shower around her slender body. Her eyes were set wide as she looked back at the Goblin King, feeling for one long moment all the pain, fear, and hatred that had festered between them since her run through the Labyrinth.

"Would you really make me say it again, Jareth?" Sarah was finally meeting his gaze now, her own eyes reflecting a sort of deep rooted pain that she was neither aware of nor inclined to believe in. Reality was beginning to take its toll on her, on a heart and mind that had once been vibrant with her dreams. "Do you really want me to say it again, to destroy what's left of my dreams and your home?"

He began to laugh, somewhat cruelly- the sound rang true in the aftermath of that shattered glass and crystal, it seemed so out of place in the tension that stretched between the two; instead of breaking that tension, the laughter drew it out, cut across its edge.
"I know now Sarah. I have no power over you?Its a lie. Back then, you did, you were strong, you have grown I see, into a stronger young woman- but Sarah" and on this he locked eyes with her, his own odd and desperatly burning "you cannot deny, that now, even when you turn away- I have power."
He grinned yet further, flicking bedraggled hair from his face as he looked into her "you still think about me, dont you?" It was a question he already knew the answer to, but he didnt make it rhetoric, he wanted to force the answer from her like sqeezing blood from a stone. There was a lingustic masochist in him.

She looked startled at his question, almost like she hadn't expected it. Mostly she hadn't but she realized that she needed to stop treating him like he was human. Jareth was an immortal creature, Fae, with mannerisms and moods that were anything but human. Now he was playing a dangerous game with her, one that had been going on between them since she was fifteen.

"Is it the truth you want from me, Jareth?" She asked, not rising to the bait just yet. She would give him the truth, of course, but for now she just wanted to linger in his presence for a little while longer. It didn't make sense to her that she craved this enagmic man's presence. After all, hadn't he tried to seal her away in an oubilette just like any of the others that had run through before her. She sighed, more than a little tired of these games. "Or is it just that you seek to cause more pain?"

She forced herself to move, forced herself to walk around the tall king in a slow circle, a stalking motion. "Is it that you enjoy the pain you cause being near me? You came here on the heals of a friend of mine, and why? Because I thought a wish that I will never voice." Her voice was calm, drawling almost, and she knew she wasn't quite herself. "You want the truth? Fine, I'll tell you the truth. Do I still think of you, even after all this time? The answer to that, if I am to be honest, is yes. I'm not so vain or naive as to think that you still think about me. After all, what is one silly human compared to all the things you have to deal with in the Underground?" She took a deep breath, feeling her temper rise. "I'm sorry if I hurt you, sorry that dealt such a serious blow to your home. I'm sorry that you can't understand why I rejected you, when the answer is plain to me. I can't make you see past the hurt I dealt you when I was a child, and I can't take back all the things said and done between us in that time."

((hope you had a great Birthday! I forgot to tell you, for my birthday last month a friend bought me a signed copy of the original screen play eek and my mum got me a talking Jareth figure))

And I wouldnt want you to His mind supplied as she spoke those words to him.

She was so powerful, so cold. Did she know? Was it he that had forced her to be this way?

It probably was. She had been no more than a little girl, a child and he had taken her brother beacuse he had wanted her. Her pain and entrapment had called out to him from the human relm, he had watched her in owl form, acting his light so many times, and from it, he had given her all that she wanted. She had wanted an adventure, an escape, he had merely followed the script.
As she stepped around him now, he couldnt help but feel a little smaller. So much of him wanted to either grab her, stop her in her footsteps with angry hand and violence and throw her down. Another section of himself wanted to tell her desperatly that she was wrong. That he had thought about her everyday, every moment because out of all of them, she had been the only one he had loved.
His face was calm, serene, his voice low and level.

"It's your fault the Labyrinth is dying"

he said softly. It was not accusatory.

"Whatever it is that you want me to forgive, I cannot forgive you that"

his eyes bore into her like oceans.

And it was true, for loss of her love, he had stopped caring, stopped luring, stopped looking after the Labyrinth- it had always been his world, a refelction of himself that could not live unless he did. Of late, he had been surviving, yes, but living. No.
