@ Garett - Would you stop that! This is a GAMING discussion, that means it's not limited to VIDEO games. There's a board game thread for crying out loud. How did you not see that!? I'm surprised you didn't jump all over that one!

@ every1 else - D&D is not evil unless you make it that way. The game itself is a tool, it's up to us how we use it.

same witha ouiji(spelling sucks) board. if you worship it and say you actually can talk to spirits, then your doomed, or if you just make weird words or have the"spirit" say yes and no to every question then your ok.
my friend spelled words like ryjgu45hfi for the name...it was hillarious.

my family is lds and my dad heard i was playing it and he didnt see how that was a big deal.

Well, no, I think that's something else entirely. It never should have been invented. That is a vehicle through which the adversary will not hesitate to try to influence those who play it. To put it in my new age hippie surfer lumberjack lingo, I get bad, bad vibes from that "game" every time I even see it on the shelf at Toys 'R' Us.

In D&D and other role-playing games, though, the focus is on assuming the role of a character, not believing that you are the character and thus have the character's abilities/religious inclinations. This can be a pitfall for those of us who have trouble distinguishing between fantasy and reality.

That's why, in the role-playing game I'm creating, I'm making religion as low-key as possible (practically non-existent unless players ask about it, but it's there), so that players won't have the chance to get distracted from believing in the one God they're supposed to be.

well ok but to me its awesome, and funny. to put it ina nutshell.

but i am a very dedicated lds member and you know what? To me that "game" is not going to hurt anything, unless I actually belive i can talk to spirits. But I dont its just a fun game to play at a sleepover to scare people.

There's nothing wrong with the game itself and imagination is a wonderful thing. What can be bad is what it's taken out of context or used as an outlet for negative or inappropriate feelings and acts. You can take anything to an unhealthy level though. Anything.

It's a tabletop roleplaying game that's been around since the 70's.

I should probably be the last person to talk about role play games adn D&D and what not. But I think its all on how you choose to look at it. I guess that when you play you could kinda relate it to the gospel or you could choose wheter or not to let it draw you away from the gospel.

i've never played, but i had some friends who did. they weren't mormon, but they were good peopel, and from what i understand about that game it all depends on how you play it. theoretically you could have a 100% clean game, or one that was practically porn or r-rated for violent content type. it all depends on what you make it. that being said, i don't think its a bad idea for your game to be totally non-religiously affiliated or religiously diverse. having characters of ambigious or different beliefs is to me morerealistic and therefore more enjoyable anywyas. as for villians-really, so long as you don't become the person compeltely and go way unhealthy with it all, its still not evil. is writing a villian in a book or scripting one in a play or movie evil? no, its necessary to plot advancement and progress and growth. i personally find it fun sometimes to be the bad guy in things like this. its liberating, and often comical, hjahaha.

Being the bad guy rocks. Heck, I was the bad guy back in my junior high play, which had to have been one of the funnest things I've ever done.

But has anyone ever played rifts? I believe that's one of the more popular table top roleplaying games. My brothers and I got into that one and had a blast. Although it didn't last long since my brother never continued the story.

I have discovered that I am utterly terrible at playing or writing villains, snobs, jerks, or anyone who isn't happy sunshine goody-two-shoes person.

Thus, I fail at RPing.
