I agree with it just being entertainment. The people who make those shows draw elements from all sorts of things in the world, including religions.
And really, I don't see much wrong with showing the "dark" or "gothic" side of Catholicism. For one thing, a lot of cathedrals are of gothic architecture wink
Also, there is dark in all of us. In everything. You know that whole saying...without the dark there can be no light? Like that. The great duality of everything and anything.

Dark and light being in us all does indeed imply we are all human.
I think that's what Katsura Hoshino intended when the final draft for D.Gray-Man was finally finished.
But of course it's entertainment.

Oh, but I just read D.Gray-Man to be entertained.
The plot is great and all, but doesn't always necessarily show all of Catholicism.
I recommend you check it out.

I personally love the anime Trinity Blood. because it potrays the Catholic Church as the saving grace as the good guys, of the world excuse me lol. Saving the world from Vampires, and peoples ONLY hope IS the Catholic Church.
There are a LOT of misleading things in it though. Like Women can become bishops and Cardinals... weird I know. Their nuns too though. uhhh and other stuff I guess. But other wise I love the anime. :heart:

Here's one: Hellsing.
Summary in a flash: Protestant England secret Organization called Hellsing uses Dracula (called Alucard) to kill any vampires in England. Throw in a secret Vatican organization called Iscariot (Judas's last name), which is devoted to the extermination of demons and heretics (Protestants included), including a bayonet wielding priest named Alexander Anderson. Throw in some vampire Nazi remants and a time setting prior to 2000 and you've basically got Hellsing.
Great manga, lousy anime, awesome OVAs. teh Catholic Church may be the bad guys slash/anti-heros (technically Alucard's the anti-hero of the story, so the Vatican is just minor characters) But its a pretty good series. 'Cept for the fact that the leader of the Iscariot Organization is a little bomb happy as the British would say (leading a crusade against England to cleanse it of the heathens and vampires all at once). OTHER THAN THAT, great stuff.

Would it be alright to use manga style for depicting religious scenes?
Manga is in itself, a distinct artistic style and I'm wondering about its application in religious art. e.g. The Last Supper, The Nativity, etc...

I think there can be religious/devotional application, but see many areas where you'd have to be very careful. Well, its because I've seen modern art used to depict religious scenes. For example, there was this huge copper wire structure depicting the Nativity(it was during the Christmas season). Also I've been in churches where the religious images are not "lifelike" but rather uses an artistic style. We can see throughout history that the style used for religious art differs depending on the period, place and popular style(e.g. medieval, renaissance, eastern, western, etc...). If such styles were alright, then it is possible to use manga style as well. Of course, the eyes shouldn't be ridiculously large, the hair should not be gravity-defying and multi-colored. sweatdrop
