Oh nay, Bard, of course not. *Maggie reassures him, holding him tightly, but all too briefly for her liking. Still, she couldn't afford to be caught in his arms - there'd be no talking around that - so she reluctantly pulls back again* I am just sorry te have put ye on the spot like that.
Thank heaven at least ye thought te fetch these different clothes. *she smiles, shaking her head* I dinna think I'd e'er have managed te explain where ye came from, otherwise.

*Bard smiles ruefully* The next time, I'll remember to bring money as well.

I am sorry that I .. *Maggie trails off, looking down. She knows he's much wealthier than she is, but somehow, being outside the Brink makes that difference much more apparant to her.* That is, if I had any te spare, I'd have..
*But she's interrupted as her son returns to the kitchen, clutching a familar looking and decidedly non-period paper notepad, along with a few pencils* "Here, Bard, look!" *Will holds the notepad out, eager to show off his hard work*

*Bard accepts the notepad, giving Maggie a bemused look*
Lets see what we have here...
*he pages through the notebook slowly. At first, there are nothing but crudely drawn letters, some of which have been creatively turned into people, animals, birds, and monsters. Occasionally, an entire page gives way to doodles. Further in, the writing becomes more refined, and here and there, letters are strung together into words. First, it's just 'Will' written over and over again. This gives way to 'William' and even 'William Dowling' although Bard notes with amusement that some of the letters still have eyes and teeth. A few more pages on, Will has tried to write down some other words. Although many of them are misspelled, his progress is quite astonishing*
Will... this is very good. Very very good.

*Will's face lights up at the praise, and Maggie is rather beaming with motherly pride, herself* "D'ye think so? I like practicing - 'tis fun!"

*Bard gives him the notebook with a grin* I think so too. That's why I do it for a living.

*Will tilts his head, thoughtfully* Mama says ye write whoooole grand big books! That's what I'm going te do, someday, too. *He informs him decisively* Just like ye.
*Maggie looks on this exchange with a sad sort of smile. She knows that she and Will don't live in a world like Bard's, where a little boy might grow up to be anything he wanted, no matter where he started out. But still, never in a thousand years would she ever tell her son not to dream*

And I'm sure everyone everywhere will read them. But before that, I think we should get something for you to read. What do you think of that?

"I think that would be grand!" *Will replies eagerly. There's a sort of restless energy about him in talking about all this - a need for more that the world around him is thus far incapable of meeting, very different from just typical six-year-old ramminess* "We dinna have anything good te read here at all."

"I hope 'twill be soon, then!" *Will pauses suddenly. For Bard to come back, means he would first have to go home, and Will's certainly in no hurry for that to happen* "Ye'll stay a bit longer yet today, though, aye? Please??"

I'll stay for as long as I can, although it can't be for too long.
*he brushes his fingers through Will's hair fondly* How about I show you how to write some words?

"Aye, I'd like that!" *Will agrees readily, drinking in the attention. He's not accustomed to anyone besides Maggie being so affectionate with him. He looks over, eager to include her, too* "D'ye want te learn them too, Mama?"
*Maggie, still looking on, is pulled from her thoughts by the question. She smiles, though her eyes look sad. She wants very much to join them, she wants ... but she forces herself to think practically.* I had best tend te some of my work here. *Unlike the Brink, time isn't going to just pause for her at home* But mayhap ye can teach me what ye have learned, later.

*Bard smirks slightly* Do you hear that, Will? Though now you're but a learner, soon, you'll be the master.

*Will grins, giggling, quite pleased by the prospect. He stands up very straight and declares with great authority* "I'll make certain she learns to write them perfect.
