Intro Message
With a newly procured Kilt (yes, a Kilt) in real life... my first kilt, too... I have set forth with a "self-dare" to come up with as many "Casually Kilted Fashion Statements" as possible. Why be so bold? Well, it's simple, in my mind: So many people think of the Kilt only as a form of "formal dress", "Pipe Band/Regimental uniform" or "costume". However, I've done some extensive research on the Kilt, its history, and its culture. And looking back to the earliest form of Kilt, we see that the Kilt was not originally any form of formal dress, but in fact, a practical and comfortable garment designed to keep the wearer warm, and protect him/her from harsh elements. This was the "Feilleadh Mhor", or "Great Kilt". This was a thick, heavy 8-9 yard all-wool tartan cloth, wrapped about the waist (hand pleated at the back), fastened by a belt, then the excess wrapped and draped about the upper body. This was the first form of Kilt, worn to protect the wearer and keep them warm. Today, the Kilt we commonly see is known as the "Feilleadh Beag" or "Little Kilt". It is a much lighter garment, wrapped only about the waist, and fastened by buckles at the side. The Kilt, as always, is flat in the front, and pleated along the back. It became common tradition that the Kilt was a men's garment, but the "Women's Kilted Hostess Skirt", very much like the Kilt, but ankle-length, instead of knee-length, was later created for Clanswomen. Somewhere along the Kilt's history, something happened that made the Kilt become formal dress. But researchers of the Kilt will always know that the Kilt was originally a practical and comfortable "garment". Simply "clothing". So it is for this reason that I wish to set out wearing my new first Kilt as a casual but stylish garment, combined with other casual clothing items. Quite simply, a "Casually Kilted Fashion Statement". My goal: To educate people, through fashion, that the Kilt can indeed be worn quite casually, and educate them about Kilt fashion, evolving Kilt culture and, of course, the original history of the Kilt garment.
