"But then, I wouldn't have a shirt to wear. So I'd be topless and running around, which can or cannot be fun, but is not preferred. Bare feet may be better."

Most of the races participants were steering clear of the wolf and it's rider, as the plains and timid portion was starting to get wet, muddy, and there was the buzzing of insects. the swamp and marshes were coming up, that lead into the mountains.
here the riders were showing more thier talents and colors. many of those that went by foot were finding it difficult to traverse the terrain, adn already of thier number three were dead. one whose hand was forever frozen in a desperate reach as quicksand had consumed and suffocated. two more were bloody masses as the wildlife had found them ill prepared.
mounted riders were not having an easy time either. the snakes, gators, and such of the terrain wasn't kinder to them. though they had more chance of avoidance...larger mounts were slowed down, but faster mounts attracted more attention from wildlife and found their footing treacherous.
and to top it all off...it was starting to rain.
Twilight was waiting at the first rest stop, idly watching the mirror as many were who had sponsored a rider. the screaming and yelling from some obviously distressed women told him the race itself had started to claim victims.

"Might as well then." Jamie kept an eye on Twilight, whom he hoped wasn't keeping keeping an eye on him. When he became interested in the mirror, James side stepped off the bath and behind some trees. He was so terrified, he could almost pass it off as excitement.
Almost.
"Come on, now's or chance to sneak by the Master."
"s**t." Robin swore and got a mouthful of mud and rain. If she wasn't careful, the blanket under the saddle would chafe and cause painful saddle sores. Now instead of leaning her weight to the front of the wolf, she had to do her best to disperse it over the saddle, slowing them down.
She did her best to drown out those who weren't doing so well. Helping other racers was a shaky area, and the rules weren't actually clear if you were allowed to help at all.

She looked around for a moment in circles as James disappeared but was quick to side step away when he called out. Twilight looked pretty preoccupied there for a bit. After all, the couldn't cause too much trouble by themselves out here. "It's not about sneaking, it's about making a break for it at the right moment. All you need is one good loud noise. And then whoosh! You're off!"

He was not pleased with the readjustment of weight and snarled loudly in protest...but kept some pace. others who were having trouble didn't mean anything to him, in fact, if they were having trouble, that meant less trouble for him. he bounded off fallen trees and brambles and moved swiftly.
the dangers of the race were no becoming quite apparently. of the many that left the race, probably only a third of them were visible to them. so either they were making good time in ranking, doing somewhat poorly...or there were a fair number of participants in dire straights or no longer able to compete, provided they even survived what happened.

"I bet employing both would work well too." He smiled, peeked out behind the tree. The race, wet and loud and in full throttle, crashed past the first way point. People cheered, contestants yelled back. And in the excitement and hoopla, Jamie and Nyelle made their break.
Jamie ran through the trees, no longer dragging Nyelle along b the hand. that would just trip her up. Keeping a line of trees in between them and the racers for protection, although the racers pulled ahead soon enough.

Yes the first checkpoint was realtively close. the next was quite a distance. days of travel...through the mountains, and past the volcanic fields. And Twilight was well aware of the bolt that the hyena and Nyelle had taken, but was for the moment content to let them have thier fun. he knew the hyena at least knew the borders and places safe to get a closer look to the riders of the race, and it wouldn't hurt them to have some fun, and nyelle would phrase it.
He'd let them enjoy themselves a bit, before fetching them to take them by air to the next checkpoint. after all the riders had to go through it...those not participating were not so bound.

"Wait up!" She was trying her best to keep up with him, which she was doing a pretty good job about. Big shoes at least gave her traction, but unfamiliar clothing slowed her down a little as well. Not to mention the wind mouse on her head who was making noise and trying not to fall off with all her runing. It was neat to be running along with racers though, however that never lasted long as soon it was just stragglers.
"Oh screw the running." A blip of light and a silver keyblade later she was sitting on it side saddle as he flew along easily, grabbing James and pulling him up beside her. "Work smart, not hard." They could at least keep up a little better for a while longer like this. "How's that for ya? Flying without wings." A least for a little bit...or until forward momentum gave out.

Caught off guard, frightened out of his mind, James threw his arms around her waist and tried to bury his head in his shoulders. It was a strange sensation, moving without...moving. And he might have enjoyed it had he bothered to open his eyes.
"Just tell me when it's over!"

He was carrying her with swiftness..or at least what he could manage with her new position...and once the path started getting on toward the foothills, he lowered his body for more streamline motion through the rain. but even the wolf wasn't going to try running through mountains...especially ones that were actively volcanic in places...in the rain. slick obsidian glass, falling loose rocks would be hazardous to his health.

"Oh don't be a baby! It's fun to do stuff like this. It's like you're a bird, just without all the tiring flapping!" Giving a laugh over the wind in their movement, she had always loved this sort of thing. Which made for a nice catchup in pace, until the weather started getting worse and the terrain was changing. "Hold on a minute." Grabbing him by his pants since she didn't want to grab him by his fur she pulled the keyblade out from under them and they plopped/stumbled to the ground. "Better? Don't need to be ramming into things."

His shaky legs hit the ground and nearly gave way under him. "Y-yeah, better." They had managed to close a little bit of the distance between them and the racers with that little trick, but being stopped as they were the quickly lost any advantage they had gained.
"We'll never keep up with them this way!"
Robin hopped the hotter terrain ahead would keep a bit of the rain off them. Either that or it would make them so humid and boggy that the fluid in the bodies would push itself out of there skin anyway. Genghis' thick fur would help insulate him from the heat a little bit, bt Robin would be stuck to suffer the heat.
She was trying to think of a way to beat that heat a bit, but was not coming up with anything quick. The mud might work, or it might boil on her skin or dry up and crack off. Leaves? Those might do...

The wolf, like many other riders and mounts, moved agonizingly slow in the foothills and rockier areas. picking thier footing. the places was a minefield of sharp shards of obsidian, slick surfaced stone..and the invariable heat that gave the area a foggy look in the rain as the water was searing off the rock in places. He found a nice cozy cave, and moved into it. it was getting to be dark, and even his pride said that this would not be the time to try to take advantage of it.
Twilight was being patient as ever. But he was checking the time. Soon enough he was looking for the wayward kids, and not having much luck. there was no way they could have ran that far that fast...until he remembered those key things. He'd seen her float with them before...thus it was not beyond thought that they could fly with them.
Now he was annoyed with himself. and a bit concerned. the riders wouldn't think twice of running them over. and he wasn't about to let them get hurt.

"Well... can't do that too much for a long time or I throw up." Grinning despite the rather gross response to such things but she merely brushed herself off some and took him by the arm to help steady him. Indeed, this was not working too well. "This sucks! What's the fun of it without being in the thick of it." Shaking her head and looking to him. "Do you know where we are anyway?"

Thankful that they weren't moving any further through the bad weather tonight, Robin slid off the saddle and stretched out her back. She had a dull ache low near her tail bone, but that's what you get for not keeping up with animals and driving in a comfy car seat. She removed the saddle and using her hands, she scrapped what water she could off of Genghis, then took a rag from her bag methodically wiped the wolf down so he wouldn't be uncomfortable.
"Can't say I'm all too disappointed." He smiled, but at her inquiry looked around. James scratched his head and sniffed the air a bit. "Er, yeah...I have a good idea." Looking up at the sky. "We should probably find somewhere to uh, spend the night. There'll probably be a lot of scavengers following this way."
