Estaban Trueba (if you read the book) Starts out someone who wants to make a little bit of money to please himself and his mother. So he runs this country called Tres Marias. However he started to get greedy, wanting all the glory for himself. He refused to believe that he was just like the "peasants" in his country.. That's what i was comparing you to, from your above forementioned comment about the preasant.
