So what would you do if you worked for 32 years for a company, and weren't old enough to retire.....but it got bought out by some crazy Canadians who were going to shut it down. You have no working experiance besides steel manufacturing, your company was the only steel company around, and no business wants to hire a 53 year old man. The only jobs you can get won't be enough to support your family, even if all of you had three of them.
My dad lost his job today and we're probably going to starve. Send us some 'taters please.

I'd move to someplace that does have a decently sized steel industry, so even despite age, they'd still want to hire me.

I'd give my children a hunk of cheese, some bread, a few bucks, bundle it up into a hankercheif, put it on a stick and send them off to make their fortunes in the big city. That or sell drugs. But in all seriousness, that is one shitty predicament. Has he tried perhaps finding friends of the former owners who own industrial plants of some sort and perhaps tried to drop names? I mean, given that many years experience, theres gotta be some industrial plant of some sort that could use him. Hell, my great uncle is older than that and still does hard refridgeration and canning machinery labor in Alaska with my father every summer.

Hell, my great uncle is older than that and still does hard refridgeration and canning machinery labor in Alaska with my father every summer. Well there really aren't any plants anywhere near here, except for the one he worked in. And it's hard to drop names seeing as he never worked as a foreman or anything, so he never really knew most of the higherups that would matter. He used to work at another plant before they sold it, and he went to this one...the last one anywhere in the area. And I wish I could sell drugs...but that turf is pretty heavily covered here lawl. And the sad part: THIS IS THE BIG CITY. lol. Mmm cheese >> @ Kenz: we don't have the money to move. We've owned the house we live in for 23 years and it's not worth jack s**t any longer. @Rayi: roffle at Captain Rainbow Sparklepants

Seems odd the value of your house would be less now O_o Is there a local worksource office he can go to? If moving isn't an option, they're generally the best to see as the people who work there have connections in almost every local business.

Well the value of the house went down because it's old and a piece of s**t these days...and it wasn't that great to begin with before. We'd be lucky to get the 80k we paid for it...if anything. And I honestly don't know if there is a worksource office.
