Lady Bastet

PostPosted: Tue Aug 24, 2004 10:41 pm

Bastet began to eat her pasta and thought for a moment. "Very evasive, vague answer," immediately she blushed a little. "I am sorry I am too blunt sometimes, and forget when I am using my outside voice. I did some research on dreams a little while ago. Now I am merely researching people." She decided to keep her own answer somewhat vague, "A name has come to my attention, it seems familiar, so I am looking it up."

Nailah looked at Bastet curiously. "I know I am quite a bit younger than you, but maybe I might know it. What is the name?" She took a bite of her pasta and smiled. Saradin made such good food. Unfortunately the only meal that she had actually had in the mansion had been ruined....but that was a different matter for another time. She turned her attention back to Bastet.

Bastet hesitated a moment poking at the pasta. "The name is Manu. My memory seems to be failing me as far as placing the name goes." She ate some more of the pasta, deciding not to disclose everything she knew and remembered.

Nailah took a long sip of her wine and searched Bastet's face over the rim of her glass. She had heard the name, but only in passing. She decided to say as much to Bastet. "Hmm...I have heard of the name. But I don't know anything about the actual person. I'm sorry that I'm not much help."

Bastet shrugged and downed her vodka and scarfed her food. She was hungrier than she had realized, "Then, is is off to the books with me. Just as well, I need something to do that does not involve sharp pointy objects and creatures spines and throats." She leaned back some, probing peoples thoughts is fun, "Why don't you tell me some about your dream, and I will see if I can help you."

Nailah finished her pasta and downed her wine. The moment had come. How much could she really tell Bastet? She oculdn't tell her the truth...at least not all of it. Or would Bastet actually understand? "Well, I have actually been having it since the antidote was administered. I am back in Egypt and strange things begin to happen. I believe it had something to do with the side effects."

Bastet picked up the plates and washed them, then she filled there glasses as she sat lightly on the edge of the table. "Everything current or ancient is tied in with that antidote you were given. Life was simpler before that wasn't it?" She slipped out of her thoughtful mood and looked back to Nailah, "What kinds of strange things start to happen? We already have a roman that turned into lizard-man, so it can not be worse than that." This piece of information was offered up soley to soothe Nailah into telling more.

Nailah thought hard about telling Bastet. She wanted to so badly. But she knew the moment the truth was out, she would lose all hope of becoming the cat-woman's friend. People didn't react well to the story. "Life was much simpler for me before I was poisoned. Sometimes I wish my healer hadn't given me the antidote. Then I wouldnt still be alive. But then I wouldnt' have so many of the memories that I have enjoyed these past few centuries." She said purposely not answering the other half of the question. She waited to see if Bastet would push for more information, still unsure how much she could reveal.

Bastet's eyes danced with mischief, as she absentmindedly played with a claw and swished her tail back and forth. "Alright then, be evasive. But let me tell you, many of us have killed regretfully. Or worse, if you are like me, I have killed purposely. Besides this is only a dream, I am trying to fathom what horror could be much worse than what I have stated, especially if it is a dream, and not confirmed to be a memory."

Nailah stared at Bastet. Was she a mind reader? How would she know that? Her eyes filled with wariness. She decided to find out once and for all. "Come on. We might as well head into the library. OH...are you a mind reader?" She asked the question and quickly moved towards the kitchen door, ready to make her escape if needed.

Bastet followed after Nailah. "No, there are several mind readers residing here, but I am not one of them. Why do you-" Then is dawned on her, "Oh, so it is a murder in your dream! And you are hoping that it is not an actual memory, so you are researching the connection between dreams and repressed memories. You see, you just make the right assumptions and watch the reactions of the subject under observation." She took hold of Nailah's arm and walked her hurredly into the library.

Nailah let Bastet lead her into the library. She picked out some books and was eventually buried in them with piles all around her, engrossed in what she was reading.

Bastet shrugged and got some books as well. Though not finding whjat she needed, she eventually laid her head down on the desk, eyes open, to think about Manu and try to recall him from her memory herself.

Bastet read the name over and over again on the Amulet, not finding it in any of the books. Then finally she opened the last book in her vast pile. Checking through it she found the name very discreetly mentioned and associated with Nailah's time period. "High priest, loyalties and competence questioned..." but it said not much more. She tapped her claws on the table impatiently. It was familiar but it was not clear. She leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes in thought.

Nailah was lost in thought. Bastet had neatly read right through her evasive answer. She knew that something wasn't right. And wasn't it a cat's nature to check out things that they found interesting? What was that saying most cultures were so fond of? Curiosity killed the cat. Well that didn't exactly apply here but who cared. Nailah sighed and reached for a book to see if she could figure out how to banish the dream.
