Nitro roared in victory as he stood with one foot pressed down on the battered frame of Maxie's Houndoom. He spread his wings out and expelled a jet of flames from his mouth as if to shout out 'Bring me a real challenge!'. It had been so long since his last battle, and this one could hardly even be called that. It left him wanting more. Underneath the dragon's heel, the Houndoom whimpered softly before being recalled into its Pokeball. As the Pokemon faded away, Nitro drove his foot into the ground with a mighty stomp and turned his attention to Maxie, awaiting his trainer's command.
Mike could only keep smiling as the battle continued to go in his favor. Finally. Something is going right! he thought, his fingers dancing in anticipation. In just a few moments, everything would be fixed, everyone would be safe, everyone could be happy. "Soon! Soon!" he cried out. "Soon!"
"To what end, Mike?" Maxie questioned. "What good will stopping me accomplish? You cannot change what has already happened."
"No!" the boy replied in agreement. "No I can't! I cannot stop the wails of the dead from clawing at my brain but-but-but-BUT what I CAN do...is prevent it from happening again. From both of us!" The Magma Leader's eyes narrowed at Mike's statement, but he had no time to reply, as the skirmish between his Mightyena, Felsic and Vesuvius was not going so well for the wolf.
Mightyena was in a tough spot. He could not attack the Torkoal for fear of the much more agile Typhlosion taking advantage of his distraction, and he couldn't ignore the turtle, for he would just keep spitting fire at him. As the battle dragged on, he knew that no matter who he chose to focus on, he was going down, but dammit he was going down teeth and claws bared! He waited as Felsic drew near and lunged, catching him off guard and sinking his teeth into the Typhlosion's arm. Felsic howled in pain, and used his free arm to punch the wolf in the head until he let go, then made sure he stayed down with one last point-blank Flamethrower attack. When the rush of battle left him, Felsic felt another surge of pain and grabbed his shoulder. Blood poured from the wound. Thankfully, Fire Pokemon had a natural defense against blood loss, and Felsic quickly sealed the wound shut with a small burst of flames. Vesivuis waddled over to his partner and gave him a curious bump with his forehead to see if he was alright. Felsic responded with less of a bump, and more of shove, but misjudged the turtle's weight and knocked himself over with how much force he put into his reply.
With the only Pokemon left being Crobat, who was still being targeted by Napalm's flames, Mike began to slowly walk towards Maxie, his eyes locked on the Magma Leader. "Just you and me now. Well, you me, and the Lilycove fallen." he said with a smirk. Maxie remained resolute, but his posture shifted slightly as he realized he had no where else to run.
"Then what are you waiting for?" he asked. "Just have your Pokemon torch me and be done with it." Mike only laughed in reply.
"You don't get it, do you? Understandably. You don't hear the screams." Mike said, popping his neck and chuckling to himself, now face to face with the man. He faked a jab to Maxie's face, then put all his force into a low kick to the his shin. The Magma leader yelled in pain and fell to his knees. Oh, did it feel so wonderful to break that man's stoicism. "What I said before," Mike grabbed Maxie's collar and pulled him in close, bringing his voice to a whisper.
"Both of us."

As he saw the dragon rush towards him, Xanthos opened his claws and let loose a beam of frost at his foe, but Sirrus was much too fast. The Flygon spiraled in the air to dodge, and planted an electrified fist in the a*****e lobster's face. Xanthos crumbled to the floor, unable to continue.
Despite being down another Pokemon, Milo couldn't help but chuckle. This was a battle he was never meant to win, but even if the defeated him, they were still the ones who would lose. They would lose Mike. The sorrow they would feel, knowing that their friend was just another petty killer, lost forever in his own mind as he, Milo, would finally hold the strings. He's close. trilled the shade. Very close. Those not in mental connection to Mike could easily tell the same from the sounds of explosions and laughter coming from the next room. If he didn't hate damn near everything about the boy, he'd almost be proud of him. Almost.
Portabello, one with such a connection, who had been struggling with the onslaught both mental noise and attacks from his opponents, struggled to stand. His body was drenched in water and dirt; small rocks littering his grassy fur. Not like this. The Breloom thought, holding his head. He had always wanted to test his skills against his human friend's Pokemon, but not like this. But if it was one quality you could attach to Portabello, it was loyalty. His master gave him an order, and he would do it or die trying! That wasn't to say it would be easy. It was all he could do to keep up his master's order of channeling this monster, but to do so while battling... Portabello looked over to see Xanthos go down to Lady Kasiya's Flygon, now leaving only him and Proton to face the rest of them. The Breloom assumed a ready stance, bracing himself as Sir Kilik ordered his Flareon to attack. Just like Nitro, or Felsic. he thought. Spending so much time around Fire Pokemon, he knew just how this would hurt. Fire always had a slight delay to its bite. The initial heat was never so bad, but once you relaxed, thinking it was over, it washes over you again. Portabello dug his claws into the dirt, ducking down his head and holding his arms in front as the flames overcame him. The pain was immense, but he would not let it be his end. When the attack ended, Portabello stood frayed, burnt, but standing nonetheless. His glowing blue eyes narrowed at the Flareon.
In the confusion from the Earthquake and Surf attack, it seemed like everyone had forgotten about Proton. Taking advantage of this, the Magnezone had been carefully locking on to Winona's Pelliper while she was distracted, and loosed a Thunderbolt on the defenseless bird. Taken completely by surprise, and overwhelmed by a tremendous weakness to electrical attacks, the bird collapsed before Winona even knew she was being attacked. "Cheap shot!" she growled, ready to release another Pokemon when she heard a loud crash to her left. A giant fireball had ripped through the rocky wall and rolled to the ground. When the flames dispersed, it revealed a very charred Crobat. The small hole in the wall began to crack before crumbling completely, revealing Mike standing over a beaten Maxie, the entire room wreathed in roaring flames. The heat and light that poured in from the room caused Winona and Sasha to cover their eyes.
------
"Both of us?" Maxie shouted over the crackle of the inferno around him.
"Mmhm!" said the boy with a chuckle. "It's the only way! It's too p-perfect! Me and you, both of us! Then no more of this has to happen! The dead can be appeased knowing that I have fixed everything!" Mike turned to the hole in the wall and his friends, who were all frozen with the same frightened look on their face. “It's okay.” he said with a reassuring smile. “This is how it has to be. It's what I want.” he stifled a laugh. “Trust me. You're all better off without me.” For a moment, Mike's face relaxed into a calm smile as he turned to his four fire Pokemon and gave the order. "Solarbeam." he said, pointing to the ground beneath his feet. As ordered, Nitro, Felsic, Napalm and Vesuvius all began to glow a bright green light as they channeled the sun's energy. As soon as they finished, Mike quickly recalled them and stuffed the pokeballs into his shirt pocket, before tearing what was left of it off and throwing it as hard as he could into the other room.
"Quoi? NON!" Sasha screamed as the realization sunk in. "What are you doing, Mike!?" Winona shouted. “You'll die!”
Mike laughed in reply, ignoring them. "Everything will be so much better when I'm gone!" he shouted into the air as the ground began to shake beneath him. "And you," he said, grabbing Maxie's collar and pressing his forehead up against his. "AND YOU, YOU ARE GOING RIGHT THERE WITH ME! Eh-heh-heh-ha. Eh-hahaha! HAAAHAAHAHAA!"
What?! Milo said angrily, whirling around and putting his face right in front of Portabello's. DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS? the shadow demanded. The Breloom shook his head. Should have known you'd try to take the easy way out! Milo growled, sinking into a dark pool on the floor.
Not like this. the Breloom thought, sprinting towards his master as the ceiling above Mike began to crack. Streaks of bright light seeped through the cracks, and the boy's hysterical cackles were soon drowned out by the earth shaking explosion that enveloped them both as Sasha and Winona dove to the ground.

When Ace completed the fire circle he rolled away and popped out of the Flame Wheel closer to Robin's side of the battlefield. The circle of fire wasn't harming the Cherrim but like a true Fire Spin would but this makeshift one would help deflect some of those nasty leaves or other such attacks that they might throw at him.
Robin was proud that her pokemon's clever strategy worked, well in theory it was working. Though she was a little worried about that Growth that it had used earlier. That made it stronger right? Oh there was something Tony Tony had said about Gardenia and Ace but she just couldn't remember it. Something about them being tricky grass types and boosting moves. Well, whatever it was she could worry about it later. "All right Ace! Let's heat things up a little more! Use your Ember and toss some flames their way!" The Monferno nodded and Jumping up into the air he took a deep breath as he felt his mouth fill up with flames before blowing them towards the little flower pokemon.
~~~~~~
Blizzard to? Just his luck! Dante groaned ans he glanced over to the point system. The cowboy guy was ahead and the clock was almost up! He and Kenny had pretty much one more attack left and Dante wasn't even sure they could make it work with Kenny's paralization. What to use what to use? It was the stinging hail that gave him the idea. "Kenny use your Ice Beam! Get as much of that ice as possible." The combination of his Ice Beam and the hail falling all over the place should look good right? Hell if Dante knew.
It turned out Dante made the right call there. The Ice Beam grew huge in Kenny's disembodied hands as the hail seemed to move towards it like a magnet. There were sparks from the paralization arcing over Kenny's body as the electricity tried to freeze the large ghost up. Dante was sure there was plenty of ice puns that some stupid trainer would say at this point, something like, 'Ice going!' or whatever. Still he wasn't that dumb. Instead he watched as the Ice Beam gathered and then shot off towards the foe just in time since the Dusclops body seized up the moment it was released. The effect was pretty cool as the beam cut through the storm and gathered up other pieces of ice in it's assault.
Ken looked around the quiet lab, and by Rowan's reaction he could tell that he had indeed disturbed the very serious gentleman. "Aww, don't be so cold professor, it hurts me on the inside. I know we're not so close but I come in peace." He said with a smile as he approached the man reading his newspaper. "Look I'm sorry to barge in, but sometimes you just get a feel for the dramatics you know? And the energy of youth!" Ken spun around as he spoke, still brimming with energy, but came to a stop trying to peer at Rowan through his newspaper. "What're you researching right now? Anything I can help with? I'm a real good helper you know. And there's always more to learn here in Sinnoh. My Misdreavus evolved into a Mismagius not long before I headed back to Kanto! Wanna see? The stones here are so mysterious, I helped a friend out with one too totally by accident. Isn't evolution such a wondrous thing? So curious and unexplained and glamorous too." Ken sighed, maybe he was talking to a wall but he could only hope that Rowan changed his mind soon. For every ones sake, Jae included as well as the people who were worried. The first person he would have to call was...who? He didn't know Jaes family and his other contacts that also knew him were limited. There were Riza and Crenu they met him shortly as well. Crenu wasn't likely to give a hoot, but he should tell Riza. It was likely she knew someone who knew him as well, since they had all been gathered in a cluster for the contest not long before.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jason was humming happily as he left the city behind him, heading eastwards towards the giant mountain in the middle of the region. Magnemite was wizzing around happily, no longer bothered by the electrical signals being poured out from the bustling city, thanks to Cynthia's help and also because they were in a nice natural forested area now. Jason was so busy humming he didn't realize that the mountain he had been looking at was still far away, and before him was a cave that wasn't connected to Mt. Cornet at all. Of course, he couldn't see that as he approached the entrance, having assumed this cave was none other than the very entrance to the mountain he had been looking for. Excited he rushed inside, the dimly lit cave hiding many things from view as his sight had not yet adjusted.
"Geodude Rock Smash!" A voice called out, followed by a rumbling sound as a geodude grunted, the outline of the rock pokemon punching away at some bigger rocks was all Jason could see before he felt a heavy knock on his head sending him down to the ground. "Oh jeeze! You done conked a kid on the head!" The same voice called out, the man walking up to the boy in the hat, helping him up.
((le short, I'm sorry))
Riza closed her eyes, and made a fist, doing her best to drive the panic out of her system. She steadied her breathing, and once more glanced back at Crenu, watching quietly at the far end of the bleachers. 'After everything, I can't lose now,' she thought, looking back into the water at her Crawdaunt. 'We're strong! We won that contest, even if we did have a little bit of luck, but I guess even luck can be a skill at times. "Diemia, use Protect!" she called. After the damage she'd suffered before, and the damage she'd caused herself, she couldn't risk another attack, even though she didn't quite know that Diemia's ability prevented her from being susceptible to critical hits.
Diemia seemed to be struggling, as her eyes would go from focused to unfocused and her movements were still a bit erratic. Still, deep down the lobster understood the importance of this match and she let out a fierce growl, raising her claws high and slamming them down on the bottom of the pool, causing some cracks on the surface. Her shiny green barrier shot up around her just as the Swift was about to strike, and the stars burst up against the protect, creating tiny explosions that filled the water with an almost smoky haze. Diemia remained in the thick of it, the last of the confusion ebbing away. She was ready to end this battle, and win it, too! * * * * * 'Okay, so that was different,' Gardenia thought as the Monferno's Flame Wheel came to an end and now a ring of fire scorched the grass around her Cherrim. It wasn't very imposing to the grass-type or the gym leader, as they often faced fire-types in their gym. Unsurprisingly, the redheaded trainer then called for an Ember and Gardenia smiled as the small blast of flames was sent toward her Pokemon.
"Cherrim, counter that with your Weather Ball," Gardenia called, still smiling. She liked this Robin girl and her cheerful attitude, as she reminded her of herself! That, and this battle was fun, and tricky, as her challenger had interesting choices of Pokemon to use. Cherrim nodded and a small, greyish orb formed at its front, and with a grunt the Pokemon lobbed it forward, and into the oncoming Embers and hopefully at the Monferno, as well. The cloudy sphere managed to deflect some of the flames but not all of them, but Cherrim stood tall even as some of the Embers licked at its body. The Weather Ball also swept some of the fire ring and Cherrim used the opportunity to hop forward and out of the makeshift fire ring, taking some more minor damage in the process. So it was a little singed, but Cherrim still had plenty of energy left!
"Thank you," Amy replied politely, only after a moment's hesitation, still feeling bad that she had won her battle when Karrigan had lost her own. Karrigan was the more experienced trainer out of the two of them; to Amy, it just didn't seem very fair. I suppose that it isn't very fair at all, she thought a little sadly as they entered the PokeCenter, and her thoughts seemed to brighten when aided by the temperature controlled room. She ran a hand through her hair, and thought of tying it back, but decided against it.
Amy merely smiled sympathetically, nodding her agreement to the notion of leaving this city--it had grown too crowded, and it would be as loud as Saffron City had been when they were there only this morning. Amy pondered her options for a moment as they slowly advanced, still unsure of her next decision when she was handing up Flora and Lee's Pokeballs. There had been an idea she'd been toying with, but after Karrigan's match, she wasn't so keen on losing what little confidence she had just gained from her victory. But trainers took risks, didn't they? They rose up to the challenge and they got stronger, even if they lost. She collected her Pokeballs within a few moments (the nurses were in full-speed mode, ready to accomodate the afternoon rush of all the trainers) and stared at her own reflection in the glossy red surfaces. She was a trainer now, wasn't she?
"I think I'd like to go to Vermilion," Amy said quietly, looking up at her redheaded companion, blue eyes earnest. "I want to go there and challenge the gym leader--Lt. Surge, I think his name was." She minimized the spheres and attached them to her belt, almost refusing to be uncertain of herself. What better could she do, at this point?
Jade had miraculously remained unscathed by the battle, for the most part. There was some mud on her boots, but she didn't particularly mind. She swept back her raven hair and nodded in agreement to his comment. The battle was fun, even if she had lost. At least here, she would not be chastised or lectured or anything of the sort. She knew her mistakes (mainly that she was underestimating Jake and his Pokemon's strength), and she would rectify them soon enough. Her fingers brushed against Aquarius' Pokeball, as if to promise the little duck that there would definitely be a rematch in his future, despite the fact that it was the last thing he probably wanted.
"There's a start," Jade murmured, leading the way into the building, casting a quick, grateful smile over her shoulder as she passed by the blonde when he held the door open. She made sure to wipe her boots off on the mat placed right near the door, as if by instinct, and continued onwards to find the helpful, pink-haired nurse. Nurse Joy accepted her Pokeball politely and Jade idled at the counter, reading the laminated tips for trainers about Poison and Paralyzation taped to the surface despite already knowing about status effects. After a few moments of reading, her grey eyes shifted to the blonde boy. "Was there some place you wanted to go? I hear there are some cool spots around here, with some good Pokemon."
Jett stood there, having expected the notion of training to come easier to him. The last time he tried so much as training, it was an attempt to have a Beautifly be capable of hurling rocks and playing with a Ralts' ability to Teleport, in his sad attempt to challenge Roxanne. The younger boy stood there, arms folded over his chest, staring at the two Flying-types, who stared back with rapt attention. He opened his mouth, as if to say something, but then no words came out and his shoulders slumped a little. "Uh," he began, unhelpfully, "maybe you two could just... y'know... battle each other? Fight how you will, but be sure to try and use your new moves!" He nodded a little, despite the fact that neither of his Pokemon seemed to comprehend his order at first. "Just fight, okay?"
Athena opened her mouth and began to screech, but by that time, a brightly colored butterfly had rammed into her side. The owl let out an indignant noise, flapping her wings to keep stable, but Aerosmith was already rearing back and charging for another Tackle. But instead, he found himself smacking into a shining pane of what seemed to be glass, floating in mid-air. Athena remained airborne, wings flapping idly, and the look in her eyes was almost smug. A crack rippled across the Reflect she had put up. The boy watched curiously from below, a smile arching upon his lips. The Beautifly only seemed angered by the move and backed away again, but by then, Athena's claws began to glow. And she was fast, faster than her teammate it seemed, because within an instant, Aerosmith was turning to fly away and Athena was raking him with her claws, courtesy of her new Aerial Ace attack. The butterfly let out a cry of pain, angry welts appearing on his small body, and his large eyes narrowed. If she was going to play it that way, then so be it! He wouldn't lose, not to an oversized bird, and definitely not to this Bugsy guy that his trainer had mentioned.
Admittedly, the Crawdaunt had never been one of Kasiya's favourite of Mike's Pokemon, but even so she felt a heavy weight on her conscience as the lobster crumpled to the ground, having been brought down by Mai's well-trained Flygon. Still a bit shaken from the previous Surf, the blonde stood and looked around, studying her friends while they continued to fight the two remaining defenders. Kilik and Flareon had managed to survive the attacks, and though they both looked roughed up, they were eager to continue, now with the fiery fox blasting another jet of fire at Portabello. Winona had since regained her wits and even Sasha was holding her own, though Kasiya knew better than to be surprised by her friends' abilities by now. Flannery was still playing things defensively, possibly more against attacking Mike's Pokemon than Kasiya had been. Last but certainly not least, Kasiya spotted Keegan, who'd been swept up and nearly dragged into the next room from the force of the Crawdaunt's Surf. He was soaked from head to toe but she was certain that he'd never looked more determined in the entire time she'd known the redhead.
Like Kasiya, Flannery had taken the opportunity to assess her companions rather than fight back. She'd seen her fellow Lavaridge native hit the ground after being pinned to the wall by the Surf and she made her way over to him, Torkoal scuttling along behind her. "Come on, get up," she practically barked at the redhead. "We could easily-" but the rest of her sentence would be drowned out by a massive fireball that burst from the wall nearby. A blacked and charred Crobat lay by the two redheads' feet, and Flannery looked up, astonished, as the wall crumbled away to reveal her childhood friend and first love standing over the battered and beaten form of Maxie, the room around them a roaring inferno of flames. The heat was intense, but the Lavaridge Gym leader stood strong, the tears that did escape her eyes drying before they could hit the ground.
Kasiya had indeed forgotten about Proton as the Magnezone had made itself scarce during the major Earthquake and Surf attacks, and she frowned as Winona's Pelipper was hit with a devastating burst of lightning and easily brought down. She looked up as Sirrus had chosen to retaliate yet again, flames starting to leak from his mouth as he prepared to blast the Magnezone with a Flamethrower. The Flygon wouldn't get the chance, however, as he had to abort his attack in order to avoid the giant orb of fire that had smashed through the rocky wall nearby, causing it to crumble and collapse. The agile Flygon spiraled and twisted to avoid both the flames and flying rock before landing beside his temporary trainer, his wide, almost expressionless dark eyes betraying the determination he hid within.
A strangled cry had escaped Kasiya's throat as she too saw what Flannery and the others saw, and she staggered forward, the burned palm of her right hand extended forward as she reached out to Mike. The light from the flames made her blonde hair glow like a sunset. "N-no!" She felt a strong hand grasp her left wrist and start to pull her back, and she looked over her shoulder to see that Sirrus had taken hold of her, his eyes pleading. The Flygon seemed to be able to sense something the rest of the group could yet not, but as the girl struggled against him, he let her go, not wanting to hurt her. Even the blazing heat was having difficulty keeping up with the stream of tears being cried by Kasiya, the ache in her heart indescribable as she watched Mike look toward them, trying to reassure them. The blonde's eyes went wide as he spoke to them, and she shook her head, the realization sinking in like a weight dragging her down to the bottom of the ocean. "P-please, Mike! No! Not this! Don't do this!" she begged.
Flannery's stomach heaved at Mike's order for a SolarBeam, and she probably would have vomited if there was anything in her stomach. Keegan was still at her side and she gripped his arm tightly, her own tears flowing freely. "No, Mike, please, no," she whimpered, shaking her head. Her hair drooped and swayed wildly behind her, having lost all its bounce due to the intense heat and adding to her miserable appearance. She wanted to run to him; she tried to, but her feet were rooted to the spot, and all she could do was sob blindly as the ceiling of the office started to crack, giving way to the intense solar power that had been called down by the four Fire-types. She didn't see the Breloom sprinting toward his master at full-speed and she barely heard Mike's hysterical laughter as the ceiling gave way, resulting in a ground-shaking explosion. She was only vaguely aware of Keegan's strong arms taking hold of her and hauling her to the ground, and the fact that the redhead then shielded her from the blast with his own body. She clung to her other childhood friend, sobbing uncontrollably.
While everyone else probably did the only logical thing one could do when an explosion was eminent, which was dive for cover or find some sort of protection, Kasiya continued to make everyone question her sanity as instead, she ran toward it. Of course the force of the blast sent her flying backward, but luckily for her, Sirrus had been paying close attention and was quick to react. He shot forward and caught her in midair, using his arms, wings and tail to their fullest to keep them from losing control. Despite his high experience level he still took some damage from the explosion, but he came out of it healthy enough to set the human safely on the ground, having saved her from being injured at all. As the dust started to settle, the first thing that was noticeable was the large, shining green barrier in the center of the room. The strength of four combined SolarBeams had opened up a vein of lava and it had flooded into the room, though it likely wouldn't spread any further than that. Once visibility had nearly returned it was plain to see that Portabello had made it just in the nick of time, managing to initiate virtually a last-second Protect to keep Mike and Maxie from being utterly vaporized.
=-=-=-=-= The last thing Misty saw as her Starmie's Swift honed in on the Crawdaunt was a glimmer of the Protect flashing up to deflect the oncoming damage, and then there was an inky blackness in the pool, and Misty didn't like it. Not only could she no longer see Diemia but she was certain the confusion had since warn off, and her smile faded slightly. Uh oh, not good, she thought. She could always have Starmie fire off another Water Pulse into the haze, but chances weren't good that it would cause confusion a second time, as it was a relatively uncommon side-effect to begin with.
Regardless, the gym leader knew that she couldn't just let her Pokemon sit there and float harmlessly in the water, she had to attack, even if most of her moves wouldn't be overly effective on the Crawdaunt. "Ice Beam!" she called, deciding that taking potshots at the hidden opponent would be much better than sitting idle. Starmie's core shimmered with an icy hue and its uppermost point tilted down, emitting a narrow, frosty ray that sliced through the water and into the haze.
Fortunately, no one had really seen the landing, and Kasiya sighed yet again and adjusted her backpack as she headed inside the Pokemon Center. She let out a low groan when she saw that there was a line up, and realized that Lilycove was probably a lot busier than Fortree. Maybe we should have went back there, the girl thought as the line inched forward, and she leaned to the right to try and get sight of just how many people were in line ahead of her. There were about a dozen or so, probably more, so Kasiya settled in for a long wait, wishing she owned some sort of music player and headphones so that she at least had some form of entertainment while she waited for her turn. The line continued to move forward at a Slowpoke's pace, but at least it did move, and when Kasiya looked behind her, she realized there were more people behind her than in front of her. Glad I got here when I did, she thought, turning around again and watching the toes of her boots, which had already acquired several scuffs and scrapes.
When Kasiya's turn finally came around, she gave her team of Pokemon to the nurse, who accepted them wordlessly, and carted the group off for treatment. Kasiya waited patiently, not liking the feeling of so many pairs of eyes on her back and she was almost certain they were mentally shouting at her to hurry up. The nurse returned quite promptly with her Pokemon and Kasiya accepted them with a polite thank-you and headed out of the crowded Pokemon Center, wondering why it had been so full in the first place. It wasn't like Lilycove had a gym or anything like that so she couldn't really see why there were so many people here.
As she stepped outside, she quickly realized the overcrowded Pokemon Center did not reflect Lilycove City itself, and she idly wondered if she'd just shown up at a bad time. Then, a foghorn sounded from the distant pier, nearly scaring her out of her wits, and Kasiya figured the abundance of trainers in the center must have just gotten off a ship. She wandered aimlessly around the town a little while longer before she realized she really had no reason to be here, and she sighed, sitting down on a bench in front of the Department Store. She would have gone inside, but there wasn't anything she really needed to buy right now. Other than getting her Pokemon healed, the trip had more or less been a waste of time.
=-=-=-=-= If he'd made any blunders or mistakes in the battle, Jake wasn't giving them so much as a second thought as he followed Jade up to the front desk. He visibly reddened when the nurse eyed his muddied appearance, and though she only gave a small laugh as she took Bibarel's Pokeball for treatment, Jake knew he couldn't stay like this. Jade seemed to be studying a sheet of paper that had been taped to the counter and he motioned for the pink-haired nurse's attention. "What can I do for you?" she asked, though her tone of voice was indicative that she already had a good idea of what the muddy boy wanted.
"Uh, well, I was wondering if you happened to have some, you know, spare clothes or something lying around? These are pretty much done for," he explained, pointing out the mud stains and oddly-angled rip that had turned his jeans into cutoffs even though it was hardly necessary.
"Not exactly," the kind nurse replied, holding back a laugh, "but we do have a Lost and Found box in the back. You're welcome to help yourself." She smiled kindly and went back to tend to their Pokemon.
Jake didn't get a chance to mumble his thanks as Jade had once again focused her attention on him. "Me? Uh, no, not really," he answered honestly, and he shrugged, wondering what cool places she spoke of. "We could always just explore the area. I'm not rushing to go anywhere." Well, except to figure out who I am and where I came from, his mind added as an afterthought, and he frowned slightly. "I'm gonna go check out the Lost and Found. I'll uh, be right back." He'd almost asked her if she wanted to join him, but realizing that it was a stupid thing to say, considering he wanted to change his clothing, and he'd managed to stop himself. He dropped his ratty backpack at the desk next to the dark-haired girl and headed off in the direction the nurse had pointed, wondering if he looked as stupid as he often felt.
It didn't take long for him to locate the box of lost things and he quickly started to root through it, finding not one but two pairs of jeans that looked as though they'd actually fit him. He also found several shirts, and considering that he had nothing but the soiled clothes on his back, he thought nothing of taking them. He didn't even bother to locate a place to change and he yanked off the shirt and stepped out of his cutoff shorts, pulling on a pair of white jeans (of course they had to be white so they could also be dirtied easier) instead. Strangely enough they were actually a little long in the leg, which was a feat considering his height, but that was the last of his worries. Though he searched the entire box of clothing, he could not find a matching pair of shoes, blissfully unaware of the irony of his situation. Before his amnesia, he'd been quite wealthy and something as necessary as clothing and shoes had never been an issue. Now, however, was another story. He folded up the grey jeans and two of the three shirts, loosely pulling on a sky-blue button-up polo before he headed back out to the lobby to meet up with Jade. "Miss me?" he asked playfully, tossing the extra clothing on top of his backpack so he could button up his shirt, too busy smirking to notice he'd mismatched some of them so it was slightly lopsided.
=-=-=-=-= Karrigan hadn't yet returned her Pokemon to their rightful places on her belt, and instead she looked at the three small spheres, resting safely in the cupped palm of her good hand. The harsh loss hadn't affected her as much as she knew it should, as now that it had actually sunk in, she only felt a mild disappointment. She did feel strangely guilty for putting her Pokemon through that horrible match, and she felt as though she should be apologizing to each of her Pokemon as she carefully clipped the Pokeballs back onto her belt one by one. She knew Amber would be especially cross, even though the Vulpix's disobedience was partially to blame, but Karrigan knew better than to blame her Pokemon at all - she'd been the one to rush into a gym battle, and with two Pokemon she'd only just captured and never really battled with. Then and there, Karrigan knew her mistake, and she looked up at the ceiling, her gaze drawn to a single piece of red ribbon drifting from one of the air conditioning vents. They weren't ready. I should have realized this. What would Candice think?
The redhead forced images of her friend from her mind and focused on her newest one, the sweet, bespectacled girl that had so kindly offered to help her open a juice bottle earlier that morning. She nodded at Amy's reply, thinking of the port city where she'd first arrived in Kanto only a week ago. She hadn't spent any time sightseeing, as her destiny had been Bill's Lighthouse at the Cerulean Cape, and she silently scolded herself for being in such a hurry. Perhaps if she'd slowed down from the beginning, many of her misfortunes wouldn't have occurred. "Vermilion," she repeated, nodding. "That sounds all right with me." She remembered something about Lt. Surge being a user of Electric-type Pokemon, but that was pretty much it. "If that's what you want, then we should go for it. It's only fair that you accompanied me to Erika's gym, and it would be nice for our roles to be reversed, I think." She smiled, genuinely this time, and wondered if it would be possible for her to defeat this Surge fellow, as well. She didn't plan on stepping on Amy's toes, however, so for the time being, she would be nothing more than a spectator.
Amy found herself strangely excited by the prospect of challenging Lt. Surge, of maybe even earning herself a badge. She would have to battle some more trainers before she felt ready, but she knew that her Pokemon were strong and none of them had a particular weakness to Electric-type attacks. Marshall was actually immune, thanks to his half Ground typing, which gave him a massive advantage. And Lee would come in handy, especially if he evolved before then. She tried to remember how Grass-type attacks would work against an Electric-type, but she didn't think it would be a type advantage. Maybe she would catch another Pokemon before she challenged the Vermilion Gym.
"Thank you," Amy said, smiling brightly to her friend. "I think you could definitely earn a badge there! And Aegeus would be a big advantage." She meant for it to come off as a compliment or a positive message, but as Amy spoke, she worried that she had sounded condescending. "Oh, no, I didn't mean-- I meant--" Red tinted her cheeks and she laughed in spite of herself, nervously. "I meant... that... you could always try again! But only if you wanted to, of course." Chastising herself mentally, the brunette turned toward the PokeCenter doors, half-checking her Town Map app on her PokeGear. It seemed they would have to go back the way they came, to Saffron, but after that, there was only one route separating the two of them and Vermilion City.
The raven-haired girl leaned against the counter, almost soothed by the silence and the occasional hum of the machines in the back, allowing her thoughts to drift. By now, her absence would've been noticed. How long would it take before they started looking for her? How long before they figured that she might've left, gone to any other region? Would they search after her then? She almost found solace in the fact that she was one person out of hundreds of thousands, a nondescript face, someone easy to lose in a crowd. She had spent a long time wishing to be somebody, somebody great, but for now, she would have to settle for being no one. Not even those old hags can catch no one, she thought, staring at the idle town from one of the lobby windows.
She was broken from her thoughts when Jake returned, in an outfit that seemed at once better and worse than his previous, muddied one. She had some sarcastic response ready to fire when she noticed his hands in their sad attempt to button up his polo. "Oh, stop that," Jade muttered, smacking the boy's hands away before she unbuttoned his shirt and began again, making sure to make sure that he was aligned all right. "There. Better." She lifted her hands away from Jake without a second thought, turning on her heel. A grin tugged at her lips then. "Now that your fashion crisis was averted, you ready to head out?"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Jett watched the battle in the sky from the safety of the ground, his eyes growing more and more focused as he watched the specific retaliations, the moves Athena and Aerosmith would use as if by instinct. Aerosmith seemed to rely on physical attacks, trying to vent the ever-burning fire of rage in his heart, but Athena seemed more sensible, letting him wear himself out before lashing out. After her first Aerial Ace (Jett was particularly pleased with how that turned out), the owl seemed content to circle the butterfly, watching with smug eyes as he attempted another Tackle attack and found the brunt of it taken by her Reflect. The Noctowl trilled and saw fit to peck at the Beautifly, making him cry out in pain again.
"C'mon, Aerosmith," the boy muttered from below, fists clenching tightly. "Use your head." The Butterfly Pokemon ducked and launched himself upwards, as if to land some uppercut Tackle on Athena, but as she moved away, his mouth unfurled and the larger Pokemon was covered in a green hue. Several green orbs flew from Athena's body, collected by Aerosmith, and he seemed to be refreshed from the move. Mega Drain, Jett's Pokedex helpfully informed him, and the boy looked up at the two Pokemon again, ready to trade more attacks. He really hadn't full-out battled with either of them in a while, not since Athena was a Hoothoot and Aerosmith hadn't battled since the match between Jett and Scarlet. And it seemed that both Pokemon had learned new moves since those times, and both were very eager to try them out.
Themis gave a snort as he watched the showoff Flygon deliver a devastating Thunderpunch to the overgrown lobster Pokemon, virtually rendering his services useless. He'd turned his sights on the floating Magnezone, seeing as how the fiery Flareon seemed to be taking care of the mushroomy Pokemon. The Manectric trotted back over to his trainer's side, looking up as the poofy-haired girl had arrived at his side, as well. Keegan, in the meantime, was still fighting off the staggered feeling he'd received from his introduction to the wall and then the floor respectively, and he looked up at Flannery with a grateful smirk as the gym leader snapped at him to get up. It was always wise to not argue with the redheaded female, especially if one valued their body parts, but his own thoughts were cut off abruptly as the wall closest to them suddenly seemed to explode as it was mowed down by a giant fireball. Keegan looked down at the unconscious Crobat and then back through the wall at the Magmortar that had been responsible for that fireball, and let out a low whistle. Man, I have got to get me one of those, he thought, finding no time for envy as he looked past Napalm to see Mike standing over Maxie, who as expected, wasn't faring so well. Remembering Milo's words, the redhead stepped forward. "Don't be an idiot, Mike!" he shouted. "This isn't what Moltres brought you back for!"
It was clear that Mike was ignoring them all, including Flannery and Kasiya, which was surprising as Keegan had been certain that if anyone could have gotten through to him, one of those two girls could. "No, no, NO!" he shouted, looking back at the Manectric and motioning for him to run - Themis bolted, not having to be told twice. The redhead wanted nothing more than to close his eyes, open them, and find this to be nothing more than a bad dream, but of course, that wasn't the case, and before he knew it, sunlight was starting to stream from the newly formed cracks in the ceiling of Maxie's office. This wasn't going to end well, and he knew it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Flannery still beside him, rooted to the spot with fear. Out of the corner of the other, he saw Kasiya starting to run toward the pending ground-zero of the four-combined SolarBeams. He knew he couldn't protect both girls, and in a fraction of a section, he made a choice.
With speed that surprised even him, he grabbed hold of Flannery and pulled her along with him. He'd spotted a chunk of the wall that had been ripped out by Napalm's fireball and he tried to move them toward it, but there wasn't enough time. Without really thinking, he shoved Flannery to the ground, forcing her head down and keeping her shielded from the blast. It wasn't overly damaging to him, save for the few chunks of debris that sailed through the air as a result, and he did lift his head to look up too soon. A lucky piece of stray rock caught him just above the right eye, and he grunted, putting his head back down until the dust started to settle. His ears and head were still ringing both from the explosion itself and the rock he'd just taken to the head, and he sat up, trying to wipe away the blood that had started to run down his face and in his eye. A part of him really didn't want to look over there, but the other part was way too concerned and he did, finding the sickly feeling in his stomach fade away as he saw that Portabello had come through with a Protect, and probably at the very last moment, as well.
"Hey, hey, it's all right," he told the still-sobbing Flannery who was still clinging to him like a baby Slakoth. "Look, look, he's all right. P.B. saved the day." He never would have admitted it out loud, but the shakiness of his own voice, and the trembling of his own hands were enough to give away the fact that he was relieved, not only for Mike, but for Kasiya, as well. It seemed her Flygon had gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep her safe. The relief quickly gave way to annoyance, however, and he shook his head, glancing over at his childhood friend to the blonde girl. That dumbass, he could have killed us all. And Kassie? Oh, Kassie. I'll never understand you. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear you were willing to die with him. His own heart had started to ache, but he said nothing else and continued to hold onto the Lavaridge Gym Leader. ===== While Krysta's Clefable and Miharu's Ampharos stared each other down, Leroy took the opportunity to get a third and final Swords Dance out of his Zangoose. Greg had called for his Machoke to rush in and pummel Zangoose with Submission, but Sparkle's previous Cotton Spore was doing a rather fantastic job of slowing the Superpower Pokemon down, and this made his movements easy for Zangoose to evade. Lee glanced at the green-haired girl, and smiled, genuinely. He hated to admit it, but he'd never be able to take these two on, by himself, and win.
Decidedly tired of the stare-down, Miharu gave the order for a Thunderbolt, as she was also already annoyed with the battle, and wanted to continue onward. After all, she had a gym battle waiting for her in Olivine. The Ampharos' tail shone brightly and she generated a large bolt of lightning which was launched at the pink Normal-type. It was a strong hit, and the Clefable toppled over, static still clinging to its plushy body as Krysta returned it to it's PokeBall. "Okay, so that's how you want to play? Let's see you shock this guy! Go!" With a graceful throw, a Sandslash was released onto the battlefield, and Miharu grit her teeth, as it seemed it was now her turn to face the disadvantage. No sooner had the Ground-type touched down did its trainer order it to use Dig, and it quickly vanished, almost as quickly as it had initially appeared. ===== Now normally, Ice-type moves wouldn't have had a major effect on the dual Electric and Water-type washing machine, as its strange ability to possess various electronics had a tendency to shift its typing, but the hail had made Rotom-W start to shiver, and perhaps the fact that it had water sloshing about its insides might have had something to do with the way Kenny's Ice Beam seemed to seek it out like a homing missile. The ray of ice smashed heavily into the front door of the washing machine's body, causing it to spin around in the air and lose a bunch of points for being very not-graceful. To add insult to injury, as the cowboy called for a retaliation, a rat-faced girl in the crowd had released a Mismagius, and before anything could be done, Rotom-W was sent to the ground by a wayward Shadow Ball. Hick boy took one to the back of the head and ended up face-planting the ground near his Pokemon. Regardless of the remaining points at the end of the round, Rotom-W was no longer able to continue the battle.
[Magma-Time Line]
Flareon was looking deep into Breloom's eyes, panting heavily. "Flare!" he barked, digging his paws into the dirt. He could tell that Portabello was hurting. Something wasn't right, but despite being completely different, the two of them had one trait in common: a complete, undying loyalty to their masters. Whatever Mike had ordered Portabello to do, he'd see it through. Just like Flareon would do for Kilik. The fox looked over his shoulder at his trainer and then stumbled as the ground began to shake beneath him. He quickly ran to his trainer and hopped up on his shoulder, holding tightly.
As the wall crumbled down and revealed Mike and Maxie to them, Kilik clenched his fist. The light forming above the two of them was blinding. "Mike!" Kilik roared, running forward. He skidded to a halt however, catching the tattered pocket full of Pokeballs, holding the scraps in his hand. He shoved them into his own pocket. "You idiot! This isn't the only way to go about this!" The boy fell to his knees and punched the dirt. The Magma base began shaking even more, and the ceiling began to cave in. The boy lifted his head slightly, only to have to look away with gritted teeth as the room Mike and Maxie were in was filled with light from four, ultra powerful Solarbeams.
Unable to hold back any longer, Aggron burst forth from Kilik's belt and stood with his back to his trainer. Sure, Kilik was small and puny, but he couldn't let anything happen to the boy that taught him what friendship was like. Letting out a mighty roar, Aggron tossed his hands into the air, catching a large chunk of rock that was bound to fall right on Kilik's head. He tossed it away as if to say "Screw this!" and turned, covering Kilik with his entire body as rocks began to fall. They chipped off of his raw hide and armor like nothing. He growled lowly as the shaking stopped and he stood, glaring down at Kilik and his Flareon.
The boy stood up slowly, putting his hand on Aggron's stomach (as tall as Kilik was, he was still dwarfed by his behemoth of a Pokemon), looking passed him. In the room where Mike and Maxie were, the light had faded and showed that Portabello had saved the day with a last second Protect. Kilik looked up at his Aggron once more and smiled. "Thanks," he said quietly. As the beast nodded, he recalled him into his ball.
Flareon slowly jumped down from Kilik's shoulder, looking at the devastation that had been caused. Certainly, Breloom's quick thinking and ability to do so saved Mike from being completely obliterated by the blast. The fox felt a little self-pity for being unable to do the same for Kilik, but it's something that he would die trying to do!
Kilik glanced around the room. Everything seemed so quiet to him. Was it over? Could they go home? Or was this just the tip of the iceberg? The boy noticed that Sasha was on the ground, screaming in rapid French. "Hey, hey," he said, slowly approaching the pink haired girl. He knelt down and put a hand on her back. "Look, Mike's okay. Portabello saved him. He's okay."
-*- [Time Skip]
"Whoa-ho-ho!" Kilik smiled, placing his hands on his hips. "A Cross Chop? Very impressive!" The tall boy then looked confused and slid his PokeDex out of his pocket. Now wait a minute, that's not a move Electivire can learn normally... He kept scrolling through information, scratching the back of his head. I know Sinnoh has some new TMs, but...my database doesn't say Cross Chop is one...
"Hey Cable!" the boy laughed, putting away his PokeDex and pointing at the Elekid, "Now why don't you know Cross Chop like little Kord here? Brick Break is a great move, but Cross Chop is so much stronger! I must say Katie," Kilik glanced over at the girl, still smiling, "I'm quite jealous of that move!"
Cable clapped his large hands together happily at the display of the Cross Chop, heartily impressed by Kord's enthusiasm and strength. The Elekid would prove to be not only a powerful friend, but perhaps even a rival later down in their lives. Cable turned and walked over to a large rock that was situated by a tree. Sure, Cross Chop was strong, but could Kord do this? Cable pulled his fist back and punched the rock as hard as he could, essentially shattering it upon impact with his Brick Break technique. "Vire!" he laughed, lifting his arms into the air, turning around and stomping back over to the Elekid, giving him a light zap between the prongs again.
"Hey Katie," Kilik said as the two Electric-types continued to bond, "if you don't mind my asking, what other Pokemon do you have? I'd really like to see them!"
Kasiya remained on that bench outside the Department store a little while longer, idly watching as people wandered around nearby. She'd just been contemplating getting up and going to find an ice cream parlour or something when her PokeNav began to chirp. The sound was very foreign to her, considering it had either been completely dead, or turned off for the entirety of the past few days, and her heart was still racing as she fumbled for the talk button. "H-hello? Who's this?" she asked, having forgotten to check the caller ID in her momentary panic. She couldn’t help but hope it was Jaeshan, calling to tell her that he was alive and well and wanted to have a friendly battle or something to prove it.
It wasn't, of course, and she very nearly mumbled her disappointment as a familiar, and rather loud voice greeted her on the other end of the line, sounding a bit surprised by her surprise at first, though it soon changed to relief. "Oi, Kass, Ya sure know how to worry yer old man," the gruff voice mumbled. "Ya damned near gave me a heart attack, Y'know."
Kasiya gave a small sigh and closed her eyes, feeling tears begin to prickle at the corners of her eyes. She realized then that she hadn't bothered to contact either of her parents since the Slateport incident, and that they'd probably thought she was hurt or worse. She'd probably even showed up on the news at one point or another. Feeling like the worst daughter ever, she sighed again. "Hi, Dad," she said quietly.
"Kid, don't ya dare 'hi, Dad' me! Do ya have any idea what you put yer mom an' me through? Eh? Do ya?" His tone was a mixture of anger and relief, and Kasiya was sure she could hear him squeezing the phone. "Ahh, just like yer old man," he sighed finally, shaking his head and he allowed his anger to subside. "You is in one piece though, eh?"
"Yes," Kasiya said, an overwhelming feeling of homesickness creeping over her. "I'm fine, Daddy. Really, I am." It wasn't a complete lie, as she was physically okay. Her emotional state was another story altogether, however.
Surge seemed to buy it, at least for now as he didn't push any further. "Where you at, kiddo?" he asked, more relieved to know she was still alive than anything else. He had seen the news, and even though he'd been given confirmation from that Mike kid that she was okay, he didn't buy it entirely until he heard it from her.
"I'm, uh, in Lilycove," she said, looking around as though she needed to reassure herself of her current location. "In front of the Department Store, in fact."
"Lilycove, eh? Doing some shopping?" Surge asked, more to keep her on the line rather than out of curiosity.
"No," Kasiya answered quickly, looking around as a boy trainer, around her age, smiled and waved, a Nuzleaf walking along side him. Kasiya offered a small smile, but didn't wave in return. "I'm just… here."
=-=-=-=-= "Fashion crisis," Jake murmured, brushing the invisible dust from his blue polo. He didn't think the shirt was that bad, though he was a bit embarrassed by his button failure. "Thanks," he muttered, bending down and tucking the extra things into his virtually-empty backpack. He made a mental note to pick up some new things the next time they were in a good place for shopping, as he was sure he looked only a half-step away from a homeless bum. He laughed despite himself when he realized the thought was more true than he liked; technically, he didn't have an actual home. The thought was depressing. He looked over at Jade, and smirked. "Yeah, let's get out of here," he said.
There was still a significant amount of daylight remaining as the two trainers stepped back outside. A slight breeze had picked up and the air was sweet from all the flowers. Jake liked it here, but he did have a strong desire to keep moving. Perhaps at some point he would find someone that knew who he was, and where he'd come from, and what he'd been doing with his life up until this point. "So where are these 'cool spots' you were talking about?" he asked, glancing over at his dark-haired companion, and he gestured for her to lead the way.
=-=-=-=-= Karrigan blinked at Amy's comment, as it had been more surprising than anything else. She'd totally forgotten about Aegeus' immunity to Electric-type moves, and seeing as he'd (wisely) missed out on the previous battle, it was only fair that he got a turn, as well. She found herself giggling - actually giggling - at the brunette's embarrassment, and she shook her head. "No, no, I understand perfectly," she said. "You have nothing to be ashamed of." She checked the map app as well, even though she already knew the route they'd have to take. "So, I suppose we should back the way we came, to Saffron, and then instead of heading north to Cerulean, we'd go south, to Vermilion instead."
Now that she was cooler, Karrigan once again put her hair up in its high ponytail, though she was careful not to make it too tight. She peeked under the bandage at her palm, glad to see it hadn't become infected or started bleeding again. She then purchased two bottles of water from the vending machine and passed one to Amy. "Let's get out of this place," she said, more to herself than to her new friend. She really hadn't wanted to go back outside so soon, but if she wanted to leave Celadon, it was inevitable. She took a deep breath and stepped through the sliding doors, and looked around. The next leg of their adventure was about to begin.
Sasha cried out as she saw Kasiya race towards the blast, her voice drowned out by the all-consuming noise of the explosion. She stood to chase after her, but was stopped by her Pokemon, who grabbed her and pulled her to the ground. "Non!" she screamed, weakly punching the Cacturne in the chest in hopes to push him out of the way. Prickles tried his best to protect his hysterical trainer from not only the rocks, but from hurting herself on his cactus-like body. Luckily, the blast more or less vaporized most of the debris that would have been sent their way. As the attack faded, the Cacturne opened his eyes to the sight of Sasha curled into a ball, sobbing.
"Ce n'a pas lieu. Ce n'a pas lieu. Ce n'a pas lieu." she repeated, clutching her sides as tears streamed down her face. They didn't make it in time. Mike was dead, and so was Kasiya. "Ce n'est pas mon petit héros! Ce n'est pas mon coup de foudre peu! Je veux rentrer chez!" She shouldn't have gone on this stupid trip! She should have tried to talk them out of it! She knew this was a bad idea from the start! As she continued to freak out, Sasha felt a hand on her back and yelped, tightening her grip. When she heard it was Kilik, the pink-haired girl's head sprang up and she wrapped her arms around, just needing someone near her right at that moment. "Quoi? Mike iz okay?" she whimpered, looking around, seeing if her friends had all made it. Sure enough, Kilik was right. Isolated in a river of molten rock stood a small rocky platform, only saved due to the trademark green Protect barrier. Though her heart felt like it could beat again knowing that her friend was alive, she knew that this only meant more trouble.
------
Ears ringing and eyes slammed shut, Maxie wasn't exactly sure what to make of the situation. Was he dead? No, that's absurd. The dead can't think. The dead aren't aware of their place. There were no such things as ghosts. The Magma leader opened his eyes and was greeted with the same obscuring darkness. As he regained his bearings, he felt a presence next to him. Mike, the man thought, slowly dragging himself back. To his surprise, he bumped into a wall. "What?" The leader said under his breath, turning to see what was in his way. As the dust cleared, he noticed a green dome that covered him. Rocks and debris from the explosion piled on top of it, providing broken light from Mt. Chimney's new sunroof. Maxie followed the length of the barrier with his eyes, finding the two others that were underneath it with him: Mike and a Breloom. In complete contrast to his previous appearance, his lips were sucked into a scowl and his bushy eyebrows curved down. It was then that the Magma leader noticed that the smoke that 'normally' wafted from the boy had become jet black.
The boy took in a deep breath through his nose, his scars glowing orange as he did. Thick smoke poured from his nose as he exhaled. "Get rid of this." he said in a low tone to what Maxie assumed was the Breloom. Complying, Portabello thrust his hands outward, expanding the barrier and causing all of the rocks to fly into the newly formed ocean of magma that surrounded them.
"This!" he began. "This is why Michael Gian Kyoka never gets what he wants. This-right here." The boy lifted his arms into the sky, looking back at the kids that had all withstood the blast. "Because he is a coward and an idiot. He can never take the simple, normal solution to anything. He has to invent new methods of stupidity in which to make his life that much more difficult! If he had just thought about ANY of his decisions before doing them, even he would have been able to see they were all AWFUL. The stupid girl already liked you, you oblivious twit!" he screamed into the sky. "How could you have not seen that?!" The boy let out a frustrated wail as he continued on. "How could you not tell that you were being used? That you were ruining your life?! Ohh, I'm Mike! I love two girls, maybe! Do you even know what love is you ******** moron? You want a girl to like you? Talk to her! You want to protect someone you care about? Don't leave it in the hands of someone else! You don't want to level half a city? Don't join up with an incredibly shady organization that steals magical, god-beast controlling artifacts!" The boy drove his fist into his forehead. "You couldn't! Get! More! Stupid! This is why you don't deserve this life. Because you suck at it!" Grinding his teeth in anger, he turned to the battered man on the ground that looked up in fear and confusion. The boy chuckled in disappointment, shaking his head. "You couldn't even kill this man."
"Who are you?" Maxie asked, looking for somewhere, anywhere to go to get away from him.
"The abyss." Milo said with a smirk. "But everyone seems to call me Milo."
------
"Don't even think about it!" Winona said, sick and tired of Milo's games. "Guys! We need to get to him and stop him!" The Gym Leader looked around and weighed her options. She couldn't just swoop in and snatch him, there was too much lava around. Even if she were to fly out the new hole in the ceiling, Mike or Milo or whatever could go berserk and cause them both to fall. They needed to get the wide open area back. "Cool this magma! Make it safe to walk on!" Winona released her Tropius and commanded him to flap his wings as hard as he could. "I can't do this on my own!" she shouted.
"O-oui!" Sasha said, standing up and releasing Ampoule and commanding her to use Water Gun on the magma. Little by little, it began to solidify, but was it safe to walk on? Sasha didn't like the idea of being mere inches atop molten rock that could melt her in seconds.
Amy was quite relieved to find that Karrigan wasn't offended by her comment--she didn't want to mess everything up this quickly, after all. But it was good to see her friend laughing, so the bespectacled girl smiled quietly in return, nodding in agreement to Karrigan's plan. The seaside city sounded quite pleasant, even though she had no idea whatsoever what she planned to do after she challenged Surge. Would she just go on, capturing Pokemon and challenging gym leaders? She didn't know what to make of the notion of just traveling, as if giving herself up to the wind and seeing where that took her. She knew she meant to look for her father, but she also knew that she wasn't strong enough for that yet.
"Oh, thanks," Amy said lightly, taking the water from Karrigan with a grateful smile. The condensation around the bottle felt nice, and she knew that it would feel even nicer out in the heat of the city. She led them out of the Pokecenter, quite reluctantly, and they were greeted by the brightness of the sun. Amy guessed that it might've been some time after noon, but she wasn't sure. They still had quite a bit of time left before the sun would set, anyways. As she began to brave the traffic and the crowded sidewalks, making sure Karrigan was right beside her, Amy tried to think of more conversation to pass the time. But all she could manage was, "I bet your Snowpoint City would be heaven right about now."
Jade tried not to notice how Jake had laughed, because it was probably something nonsensical and something that was absolutely none of her business. Instead, she adjusted her shirt some and studied her own appearance. She didn't seem very dirty (most of the mud had gotten directed at Jake, fortunately for her), save for the mud on her boots, and she had some dust and stains on her shirt and shorts, but she didn't mind them as much as she had expected. In fact, she liked them; they almost made her look like a trainer.
Floaroma Town was an idyllic town, and Jade noticed that it could've been Ecruteak if it had a gym and the kimono girls academy. It was a slightly discomforting thought, so she forced her mind elsewhere, like trying to think of any cool places she had seen around here. "Well, aren't there always cool places around?" she asked, pulling out her Town Map from her bag and checking it. After a few moments of adjusting it and finding their current location, she found some spots and pointed them out to the blonde. "There! See? There's some sort of windmill powerplant... and Eterna Forest... and an ironworks place. Any of those sound cool enough for you?"
Athena seemed incredibly displeased with the thought of having her energy drained, so she reared back for an attack of her own, talons already glowing. The owl soared toward the butterfly, and even when he tried to swoop down last minute, she followed. The trainer below grinned; Aerial Ace really did come in use. When Falkner had used it, it never missed either. The attack struck true, and the Beautifly cried out in pain, since Flying-type attacks were still super effective on him. Dodging did not prove to be Aerosmith's style, anyhow. He spun around and flew up towards Athena, who braced herself for the inevitable blow to come.
But Aerosmith didn't use Tackle, nor did he use Mega Drain again. Instead, the butterfly simply flew right over his opponent, leaving a trail of yellow dust in his wake. Athena's eyes widened as she felt an unfamiliar tingling take over her body; the Stun Spore had made its intended effects, and now her body was beginning to freeze up. Flapping her wings to remain airborne seemed to take much more effort than before, so as she struggled to stay afloat, the Butterfly Pokemon was already rounding back for his real attack. Athena was clever, however, and as Aerosmith rushed towards her, she turned, her eyes beginning to glow. And then she hooted, the telltale rings of Hypnosis beginning to fly towards the oncoming Bug/Flying-type.
Swaying slightly on her feet, Kasiya groaned, a little unsure of what had just happened. The last thing she remembered was running toward Mike and Maxie, and then it was so bright she had to shut her eyes. Anywhere her skin was exposed felt as though it had suffered a mild sunburn, and her eyes felt dry as well. She felt a gentle hand on her shoulder and she looked up at Sirrus, who gave a quick nod, and all at once she understood that the Flygon had saved her. "Thanks, Sirrus, you're incredible," she said, turning to look back at the group and survey the damages. It was then that she remembered why she'd been running toward the office, and she let out a quiet sob, unable to believe it. "Mike..." she whispered. "Please, no..." She took a shaky step forward as the dust had started to settle, giving way to a shimmering, green barrier. Kasiya was sure she hadn't ever felt this level of relief, and at that moment, she also had never held more respect for the Breloom. She smiled, despite the voice that had started to ring from Mike's form. Like Winona, she'd had enough. It was time for Milo's time in the sun to end.
The heart of the Lavaridge Gym Leader felt as though it had been shattered. They had failed. She had failed. They were supposed to be helping Mike, and in the end they were unable to do a thing! Her body was wracked with sobs, and she wasn't even aware of whom she was clinging to until she heard Keegan's voice, telling her it was all right. "Portabello?" she repeated, letting him go and jumping to her feet. Sure enough, the glint of green shone brightly through the settling dust cloud, and she closed her eyes, sighing heavily. She spun around to glance at Keegan, to thank him for shielding her from the blast and she quickly noticed that he was bleeding. He was in one piece, though. "Thank you, Keegan," was all she said, slowly turning back to face Mike/Milo. Her gentle smile faded into a scowl, and she planted her hands on her hips, in full agreement with her colleague. Milo had made fools of them for long enough, and it was time to put an end to all this, once and for all.
The blonde girl turned to look at Winona as she released her Tropius. It took her a few seconds to clue in, namely after Sasha's Lanturn made an appearance and had started to cool the magma with a Water Gun. Kasiya made a face: this would have been the perfect sort of situation to have Ariel at her side. She glanced around quickly, hoping no one would notice her Water-type substitution as it would probably lead to questions she didn't want to answer just now. She took a Pokeball from her belt and tossed it quickly. "Okay Leviathan, you heard Winona! Use your Water Gun to cool the magma! Hurry!" The Swampert tromped forward, nodding. The scorching atmosphere was very uncomfortable for the Water/Ground-type but she obeyed nevertheless, standing alongside Ampoule as she began to spray down the magma, sending up bursts of steam and smoke as it started to harden and cool. "Mike!" Kasiya called, her resolve unwavering as ever. "Hang in there, we're coming to save you!"
Flannery glanced quickly from the Lanturn, to the Swampert, to the Tropius and back again, her smile faltering. Being a Fire-type specialist, she didn't have any Water-types, and for a fleeting moment, she felt utterly useless. Even Winona, who's only Water-type had been KO'd by Proton was lending a hand, and in that instant, she smiled, an idea forming in her mind. She yanked a Pokeball from her belt and threw it, and it burst open beside Winona's Tropius to reveal her trusty Arcanine. "Arcanine!" she shouted, pointing to the Grass/Flying-type, "give Tropius a boost! Use Helping Hand to power up his Gust!" The fiery canine threw his head back and gave a loud roar, a glowing ring of energy surrounding him. He pounded the ground with a massive paw and the glow seemed to fade, reappearing a split second later around Tropius. The wind being whipped up from his leafy wings grew in power, and Flannery smiled again, no longer feeling useless. "Yeah, Milo! You'd better watch out, we're coming for you!"
=-=-=-=-= The thought of not having a true home was still bothering Jake as he looked around, finally settling on the back of the map that Jade had pulled out. He knew it wasn't fully true, his not having a home, as Professor Rowan had told him he could return at any time he wanted. Rowan had been fairly sour and grumpy, but Jake wondered if that was just a front he put up. "Power plant?" he repeated, nodding. "Well, we have to go through the forest to get to the next town eventually, but we could always check out the Ironworks or the Windmill just for fun. "I don't mind one way or the other."
He noticed a sign, decked out in flowers, which read 'Floaroma Meadow' and he wondered if anything of interest was out there. "Didn't you say you wanted to find a Grass-type?" he asked. Of course, the Psyduck would definitely be helpful in Roark's gym, but he was quite curious as to what kind of Pokemon Jade was interested in. "We could always just start walking, as there's only really one way to go from here, and pick a destination later." He gestured to the path that would take them to Route 205.
=-=-=-=-= Karrigan frowned when she saw that the crowds of people hadn't died down that much. If anything, there appeared to be more people than before, and she sighed, trying her best to stick close to Amy as the two females weaved their way through the crowd. "Hmm?" she said, almost missing Amy's question over the buzzing of the people surrounding them. "Oh, yes. It's by no means a small town, but it pales in comparison to places like Celadon and Saffron. I do miss the snow," she added, a bit of a distant look appearing in her green eyes as she thought of her perpetually snow-covered hometown.
Perhaps the two had grown skillful at navigating their way through the city, or maybe it was just luck and a good flow of the crowd, but after nearly an hour of trekking through the city, they found themselves approaching the outskirts of Celadon City. The crowds thinned out significantly, and Karrigan sighed with relief. Maybe it was just the overcrowded streets that made the city feel hotter than it actually was. "Whew," she sighed again, having long finished her water and dumped the bottle in a recycling bin. "Hey Amy, have you given any thoughts to what kind of Pokemon you'd like to capture next?" she asked, the gatehouse now plainly in sight. Their quiet conversation always seemed to make the walk pass by a little quicker.
((Really sorry for the delay. =( ))
