Her rudeness didn't seem to phase him much. Maybe the suits at SHRP knew what they were doing pairing these two up...or maybe he was just too stupid or macho to show any reaction. His eyes lifted towards the ceiling as though searching for something to say and he pursed his lips together, making a slight popping sound as he blew air out from between them. "Well," he finally responded. Though it may have seemed to anyone versed in the art of conversation that "well" had been a precursor to a new thought or idea, none came from the mouth of Davis Kent. His eyes drifted back up to the ceiling and his mouth began making that annoying popping/buzzing sound again until the drinks finally arrived. "Thanks, Frank," he said to the bartender, slipping him a twenty dollar bill. He placed a shot in front of her and laughed at his own wit again, raising his own glass in a toast. "To new friendships!"
((nothing particularly interesting in here - just a few guys in the corner playing pool and a younger guy sitting by himself at the bar. You can make a Perception Feat for more details on your surroundings if you'd like.))

((Perception feat. it is then!)) ((Perception 2+Heightened Senses -3 to difficulty)) ((Wooooow. XD Critically oblivious then.))
Angela didn't pay heed to Davis' apparently inability to make conversation, her gaze sweeping the room again while he looked to the ceiling, though that persistent noise he kept making was nearly enough to make her want to reach across the table and... do something.
The room was almost as uninteresting as her partner. Almost, so she dismissed it and its patrons and refocused on Davis as he insisted on a toast. Looking down at her nose she didn't need to decide to forego the shot, she'd already decided ahead of time to have nothing to do with any beverages or foods from this place, and she slid it over to him instead.
"When you're done maybe you can tell me where my partner is and when we are to start working?"
She was halfway serious in her implication that this was not the real Davis Kent. Either that or SHRP really didn't care what was going on in this town and they had simply sent her there to get her out of the way... and she refused to believe that. She was far too much an asset for their organization to be shunted to the side. Or, this was the real Davis Kent, and she was going to have a much more difficult time of investigation the kidnappings than she originally believed.

((lol better to get the 1s out of the way when it really doesn't matter, right? wink ))
Davis downed his shot almost as soon as he had proposed the toast, and set the glass down with a satisfied grimace. He had once wondered how people could enjoy whiskey, but years of forcing himself to drink it had seen to his acquisition of a taste for it. Seeing that she had pushed the shot glass aside, he shrugged and downed hers as though to say "more for me!"
Finishing the second shot, he breathed heavily, ignoring her comment. "Whew, that's the good hurt," he said, reaching for his beer and taking a deep drink from it. He seemed to be enjoying himself. Maybe he just liked annoying her. Of course, he realized she had her limits of patience. The games could continue only for so long before she called it quits and angrily returned to SHRP to tell them what they already knew; he was a lazy, unprofessional, drunk a**. Normally, he'd be fine with letting her go...but he had requested back-up; an act he had never before indulged in. Making enemies with her and further upsetting the suits at Sharp HQ would only set a particularly difficult investigation back further.
He set the glass down after a moment, his expression now rather focused as he looked at her, leaning forward and pointing his index finger right at her face. "I am the real Davis Kent," he said in response to her internal dialogue. "And believe it or not, I'm probably the best field agent SHRP has...which is also probably the only reason they haven't fired me yet. You're new around here so let me give you some advice; keep your head down. People who try too hard in this line of work end up dead or crazy...sometimes both. I know you're young and eager to prove your worth or whatever...but don't. Just don't. It's better to live a long, boring life in blindness than to know what's really going on behind the curtains anyway..."
He leaned back in his chair, taking his eyes off her and glancing idly back towards the bar as he brought the half-empty beer mug back up to his lips, taking a contemplative drink.

((In theory anyways xd ))
A brief moment of clarity following his eager consumption of the horrid smelling alcohol caught Angela off her toes, but only for a moment. Then she smiled, somewhere between sweet and satisfied, and seemed nearly as unphased by the warning he had surprised her with.
"Well aren't I lucky? She asked rhetorically. Whether he'd know it as a question that didn't need answering or if she would follow up with why she thought that she was was null.
She found it lucky that he considered himself the best field agent of the SHRP organization. It was lucky not because she felt safer with that knowledge, or that she found it as an opportunity to learn something (despite his heavy advice), but because she saw it as a chance to one-up him. If he was then best then she would be better.
"So getting drunk is good for your 'lie-low' strategy, is it?"

He looked at her sideways as he continued drinking, finishing off the brew before he responded. The professionalism that had steeled his eyes for the few moments before faded, taken over again by the slacker's stance. "Mmmm..." he grunted in enjoyment as the last of the beer slid down his throat. He set the glass down on the table and leaned back, propping his feet up against the table, his shoes dirty with mud and rainwater. Frank didn't even seem to flinch. In fact, the rainwater might even be an improvement on the sticky sheen of grime and dried booze that was already on the table.
"Man, you are some piece of work," he said, looking back up at the ceiling. "Okay, so I guess you're not going to take my advice. Let's talk shop then. You're here because of the kidnappings, right?" He spoke in a normal indoors voice, but to those typically immersed in the secret side of the world, he may as well have been screaming. Common sense would indicate that any SHRP agent worth his salt wouldn't be talking about case details in a public place, let alone at a normal vocal volume. Yet here he was...and no one in the bar seemed to flinch at the mention of the series of kidnappings and brutal murders which had recently plagued the town.
"Hey, wait a sec," he said, suddenly taking his feet off the table and leaning forward again, tipping the table towards himself as he placed his weight upon it. "What exactly is it you do? Are you psychic or a vampire or what?"

Angela sat back a little further on her seat instinctively when the dirty, wet shoes came up to rest on the table between Davis and herself. Her hands stopped moving through her hair momentarily as he began speaking about the case openly and stilled completely when he showed no hesitation about doing so. She had wanted to get to business, it was true, but she'd thought he would get a room in the back, or upstairs, or at least lower his voice before doing so.
She freed her hands fully and lay them on her lap slightly defensively when he began asking questions about her and simply raised an eyebrow.
"Weren't you briefed by our superiors? They should have told you everything you need to know."
She really wasn't a particularly open person, even less so when the questions seemed almost arbitrary in comparison to the discussion that was supposed to be at hand (preferably in a more private setting.)
"If we're going to talk about anything work related we should find somewhere else to do it, just you and me."

He grinned a bit at her statement, his mind apparently going to dirty places. He thought better of pursuing that line of conversation and steered his tongue elsewhere. "You underestimate the power of disbelief, girlie. Hey Frank!" he yelled to the bartender. "I'm psychic."
The bartender laughed a bit. "Sure ya are, Davis."
"No, really," he persisted pointing to his head. "I can read your mind. Me and this girl here both work for a secret organization researching and documenting the paranormal. We're going to solve the kidnappings and murders that have been going on lately."
Frank gave him an exasperated look. "I think you've had a bit much to drink, pal. Why don't I call you a cab?"
"No need," Davis continued with a wave of his hand, turning his attention back to Angela and standing. "We were just on our way out."
That same grin that appeared when he was very pleased with his own (lack of) wit resurfaced as he made a move towards the door, speaking to Angela as he went. "People believe what they want. It's all they ever believe. Cthulu himself could walk right through that door and they'd think it was all special effects. We've got nothing to worry about."

Angela visibly cringed when he began announcing himself and his profession, struggled to keep the urge to hit him at bay when she caught on to what he was trying to show her, and spent the rest of the distance between their table and the doors in dead silence glaring at him. She was glad to finally be out of this place, however, so she waited until they were at the threshold to say anything further lest it delay their departure.
"Assuming whoever or whatever responsible for the kidnappings isn't in hearing distance, of course."
Geeze. This guy really was Mr. Fantastic in his own world, wasn't he? She had shouldered her backpack once more when he stood and started towards the door and, now closer to the exit, she slipped her other arm through the spare strap so that both her hands were free.
"Where too now then, partner?"

Gee, he hadn't thought of that. "Well, then I suppose they'd know we're onto them and dig themselves a deeper hole," he said thoughtfully. "That or try to kill us in our sleep." He said it as though either of those results weren't that big a deal. Once they had exited the dank, run-down bar and were back in the rain, Davis reached into his d**k Tracy trench coat and extracted a set of keys.
"I suppose our next step is for me to show you the evidence I've collected so far and see if you can come up with a fresh angle," he said putting one of the keys into the passenger's side door of a cheap foreign car and opening it for her. He made his way to the driver's side and got in while still speaking. "Also, SHRP didn't tell me jack s**t about who I would be working with. They said it was a new recruit, top of her class, yada yada...but they always leave out the real juicy details. For a bunch of paranormal researchers, you'd think they'd be less squeamish about these things. So what is it you do? I'm guessing you're some kind of psychic, right?"

Angela didn't seem to react much to his assessment, not any more than she'd already been reacting, and seemed fairly calm at the idea of being sought out. Her problem with the idea of the unsubs being onto them was that it would make their investigation more difficult, presumably, and though she had no doubt in her ability to solve it she didn't enjoy challenges. She thought them futile and annoying.
She waited until the both of them were inside the car, accepting the open door without thanks, before she answered his question.
"Psychic is one word for it."
Once he'd settled himself in she focused her mind and used it to complete the picture in the form to telepathy.
Telepathic, telekinetic, precognition, and I'm my own EMF reader.
She tapped the corner of her pale blue eyes to emphasize the point, then buckled in while preparing for the shoe to drop. She cast a look at him from the corner of her eye to see what he did with that information while waiting for the worst. There were reasons she didn't open up to people and this was the most honest she'd been in a long time.
((Please tell me if that use of telepathy was done wrong, as I'm new to this and going of what's written under the power in terms of distance and intellect calculations...))

((nope, that was just fine! We're in "free RP" anyway, so a lot of the hard and fast rules don't matter quite as much right now))
He started the car and backed out of the tiny parking lot, making their way onto the main road leading into town. He didn't do much with the information she gave him. As though he were accustomed to it. "This town is all kinds of messed up," he said in response. He could have gone several directions with an opening like that, but instead he chose to follow it with "the roads are full of potholes and half of them don't even go anywhere." That could have been a metaphor. "Plus it's so spread out...getting around anywhere is a nightmare."
She had probably expected a different reaction. He realized that after a strained moment of silence. "Oh, uh...yeah, so psychic. That sucks. I'm sure you got a lot of s**t for it before signing on with Sharp. You ever see anything really freaky?" The road they were on was windy and on a slight incline leading into the town proper. With the way the rain was coming down and the turns as tight as they were, Davis' speed was sure to put even the most relaxed passenger on edge.

It took Angela a moment to truly get over the lack of reaction from him, looking out the wet window to redirect her gaze of scrutiny, and instead mulled over what he'd said. She never was one for metaphors, and riddles drove her crazy. That's why she solved them, to be rid and done with them.
When the vehicle picked up speed she couldn't help but put a hand on the door handle lightly, mentally preparing for flight should the need arise, but was too stubborn to allow any more anxiety to show than that. Instead she dug into her pocket with her free hand and produced a piece of gum, unwrapped it, and put it into her mouth while putting the wrapper back into her pocket.
The speed of the car, the weather conditions, and the mention of anything 'freaky' caused her to pause. When she might have responded with something akin to sarcasm she was instead reminded of something else which caused her heart to flutter slightly.
Finally she answered more quietly than she ought to for a supremely arrogant and self-righteous little girl.
"Nothing I couldn't handle."
That quiet voice annoyed her far more than any of this man's antics thus far and, in a show of defeating it, she spoke again with her normal tone and volume.
"And, what about you then?"

--- [Svelte, Ilusha-Hegal, " Nima "] Svelte complied easily enough, finding the handle to the roof with ease. She had to stand up somewhat to do it, but using the passenger seat as a support (and leverage) she locked the roof into place and stepped into the front as Jack 'suggested' she should. It was an awkward vehicle, but comfortable enough Svelte thought.
"Something about rain," she started to say, only pausing momentarily in thought and while buckling her seatbelt, "makes it so simple to simply doze off into a nice nap..." What fragments of her memory there were, she might have recalled dozing through the great floods millennia ago. Still, even though she was in a car with a stranger, he seemed harmless enough that her eyelids started to droop some as the first drops started to fall.

"Every damn day," he said grimly, taking his eyes off the road for a moment to note her slight change in posture and tone. He made a face as he looked at her, as though he were seeing something about her for the first time. His look was...a bit unsettling. Especially considering the wet road, tight turns, and loss of visibility.
Suddenly, a smaller craft appeared in front of them around one of the turns. Davis caught a glimpse of it out of her peripheral vision a second too late and reacted as quickly as he could to avoid a collision with the vehicle.
