I could understand hating the dub (I do) but I think even that couldn't completely ruin the story. Do your friends like anime in general? Part of the reason why Mai Hime/Otome is so popular in Japan is because it has a wide target audience. You got your fan service and your magical girls... although honestly, I think this show is aimed more at male otaku than anyone else. Interesting that so many girls (straight and lesbian) have gotten into it, too. smile
