I can play all the instruments from Rock Band for realz! [/bragging]

Guitar Hero actually gets real hard after you get good at real guitar. The songs get too slow and you try to hit every single note or you hit too many buttons because you're used to chords.

Shat up. Yer jest triing 2 maek meh jelus yuh n00b.

k im done.

So tell me Fenky, how is the bass different from playing the guitar, other than it having less strings? Is it harder to play with less strings? 'Cause the bass is just another beat keeper, am I right?

And did you teach yourself to play said instruments?
Assuming so, was it difficult and how long did it take?

....yes I am drilling questions because as of now my life goal is to become a rockstar and date rockstar boys -___-

I also want to learn guitar reeeaaaallly badly, but my stupid mother is too lazy to take me to lessons and doesn't want people coming to our house to teach me.

Start with guitar because you can look cool without having an entire band with guitar (like if you show up to school with a guitar you look cool but if you come to school with a bass nobody cares) and it's easier to go from guitar to bass than bass to guitar. If you start with guitar you can pick up a bass at any time and know exactly what you're doing but if you start with bass you won't be used to chords or the two extra strings so it'll be like a whole new experience but not in a good way.

I took lessons for guitar for a year. You'll hear of people who taught themselves and ended up being really good but in most cases if you teach yourself you'll learn at a rate of one song intro every 2 years and people figure out you suck real quick. Bass, if chosen after a long time with guitar, is just guitar but easier. The riffs don't need to be fancy, you never do chords, and it's easier to get in a band if you know bass because most people don't want to play it because your average drunken audience member cares more about catchy guitar solos and vocals.

Drums I have little experience with but they're the easiest to play during covers usually. Most drummers have a small set (cymbal, snare, bass, toms, etc.) and you just have to listen to the song you want to play and hear the sounds and try to match it. Like you'll hear a loud booming sound then a crashing sound. You'll know the bass drum makes such a booming noise and the cymbal will make the crash so all you need to worry about is timing. You just need to play around witha drum set for 5 minutes and then you'll be okay to play by ear. I've never tried playing something original with drums so I can't help you there. I just know you can learn Steve Miller or the Rolling Stones in 15 minutes if you have a basic understanding of what drum makes what sound.

So there you go. A giant manual on instruments that I made so I could feel smart and important. Ask me any other questions about guitars and bass you want but you know as much as me on drums now.

Wow. I can officially say that's the most informative information about instruments I've ever gotten in my 14 years.

I shall nag my parents about getting me lessons then. I can only imagine myself trying to learn alone; a total train wreck. My dad would say yes but he's on a business trip now so it's me and my evil mother |:

So another few questions:
I want to play electric in particular. Should I start off with buying an acoustic though or just jump right into the electric guitars?
As of now, I find the Gibson Firebird and the Gibson Explorer the most asthetically pleasing models, but the prices are a bit high for a beginner, no?
Fenders are nice but I am totally lost when it comes to choosing 'the right one'.
I heard learning acoustics and electrics are totally different. Are they?

edit:// yeah the bass isn't the most popular of instruments for the crowd I guess |: But I mean it did Pete Wentz some good.

Not much is different with acoustic and electric. Just pretty different sounds and you may go down different roads while finding your own sound depending on what you start with (if you start with acoustic you may find youself going with folk music and if you start electric you may get more into metal and punk. It's all in the maybe department though). If you already want to go with electric just do it. In your case getting an acoustic first is just gonna make you spend a few hundred on a guitar you don't truly want or need. It'll be easier for people to hear an acoustic because you won't need an amp but you kinda don't want people to hear you until way after you've started playing. People don't understand how hard guitar is so they'll rip into you if you're not as good as all the rockstars.

Gibson is kinda THE brand and it's foolish to get your dream guitar (especially YOUR dream guitar) before you actually start playing. I got my dream guitar for the 1 year anniversary of me playing guitar and I still wasn't ready for it. Go for a Squier Strat. That's the common novice guitar that's actually still good quality. Only snooty guitar players can tell that Squier is a cheapo brand. Squier is like the poor man's Fender. In fact, Fender owns Squier. You're basically buying a Stratocaster but saving money. Most music stores sell Squiers in combo packs with a strap, case, amp, tuner, etc. for $200 more or less which is a fantastic deal. It's still my guitar of choice.

LADY WHATSHERFACE?! NOT COOL FENKY, NOT ******** COOL. D:<

Squire eh? So I'll drop by a Sam Ash or something and look for some kind of Stratocaster.
My dad knows this guy who'll do a custom strap for me for free so yay (:
Would I need a case that badly for now? Or just like a stand or something?
They make tuners? Oh god this is so confusing. I thought you had to tune by ear.
As for amps, I might as well buy the cheapest one for now.

You can't tune by ear for years. But tuners are cheap. I'd invest in a stand and a case is handy but I guess you don't need it unless you travel a lot. I'd honestly just look for the Squier pack that has everything and also get the custom strap. It'll have everything you'll ever need at a decent quality.

Wow. So the Squier pack it is.
So is it bad to draw on your guitar? To like decorate it. That question has been haunting me for a while.

YES! Y-E-S! YESYESYESIT'SBAD! It looks terrible and stores won't even accept a used strat if it has swirls and s**t scribbled on it! Everyone loses all respect for a guitar player if they have to write on their instrument. You can have custom pickguards made and those are cool as hell but they're expensive for something that's only for show. The best decoration for a guitar is wear and tear throughout the years. Little dings, dents, and burns look cool if they happen naturally over the years.

Oh s**t nevermind then. If I get a custom pickguard, it'll have to be sparkly *-*
I want a custom pick. That'd be awesome. Actually I saw Hello Kitty picks. They were kick a**.

The pickguards that come in the Squier pack are sparkly half the time. Mine is. But in a subtle way. It gets you positive attention. And picks come and go so don't order custom picks. Too expensive. Scrape the pictures off Dunlop picks (the best brand. Trust me) and draw on them. It's okay to draw on a 15 cent slice of tortex.

Ohkay sounds good.

It makes me laugh that you have a sparkly pick guard.

Haha Fenky's guitar sparkles like Edward Cullen!!

Sparkly enough? The design is called pearl I believe. If you can only get Squiers with a white pickguard don't worry because pearl is a common design and it won't cost much to order compared to custom stuff.

Awe that one is cute. So like without an amp, you can't hear the electric guitar at all?

Wait, where is the whammy bar?
