"Can someone get the lights?" one of the men asked in the dark.
"Where is the light?" another man retorted.
James looked around and groped the wall blindly, finding a light switch minus the switch. "There ain't none!" he called out.

"Marvelous" Rachel muttered. Within a few minutes, the stench of blood and mud covered soldiers mingled in the air with sweat. "Ugh, I think I'm going to lose whatever's left in my stomach"

Somewhere in the far corner, someone did just that. There were yells of disgust and outrage. "Just great," James muttered.

Rachel gritted her teeth as she leaned against the wall. "I definitely didn't see this coming when I signed up"

"Ending up with a bunch of strange men from across the Atlantic in a Kraut POW camp ain't exactly knowin' what day it is tomorrow," James replied as he groped around for a bunk to climb onto. He soon stumbled against the wall and was hit in the head by something hard and metal.
"Gah!" Rubbing the back of his head, he looked into his lap to find a lantern that had been hanging on the wall. "Hey, who's got a light?"
He was met with a reply from a soldier nearby who flicked open a Zippo lighter. James held the lighter near the igniter of the lantern and soon the room was illuminated, albeit dimly. Now, all 20 unwilling residents of Barracks 2 were visible.

Rachel looked around nervously. The lantern's light glowed eerily. She knew it wouldn't be very long before the other men recognized her presence, although she figured they would have to get fairly close, since her hair was short-cut, making her look more boyish in the dark from a distance. She backed up slowly towards a darker corner where it would be be more difficult to see her clearly. She hoped the others would take a bunk and maybe sleep, letting her go unnoticed, for now.

Men soon began to scramble to claim top bunk, giving them something to do in the meanwhile. As bunks filled, James walked over to Rachel. "Wonder who the senior officer is, around here?" he whispered to her.

"Well, I think I've got a good position here, except for the fact of being a woman... Just how well do most military men take to women in authority?"

James simply looked around. "You sure you want to make the fact that you're the only woman for hundreds of miles probably public?"

"Then you may want to keep a low profile," he advised as he sat down on a nearby, unclaimed bunk.
