And now the post I was trying to make but ended up over-writing Sugar's post with.

All in all I wouldn't say I was disapointed in it, but I highly recommend you watch it in English first... Then maybe you won't be like "Oh that's just lame..." like I was in some parts.

I actually disagree with you very strongly. Although I havn't seen it, in Japanese or English, this is a strong point I like to make with anything.

I believe you should always, always, always watch something first in the language it was originally made in. This gives you a better perspective on the creation of it... you can see that it was just dubbed over, and which was the original and which was the changed version.

I don't want to be the "OMG Japanese is better only watch sub" kind of person like a lot of people are. I look at it this way: If I was Japanese, and I wanted to watch American cartoons like Gargoyles, Spider-Man, Batman Beyond, etc... I'd want to watch them in English with Japanese subtitles.

Some people argue about particular shows. Cowboy Bebop, for instance. I've heard so many people say the dub is better. Here's all I have to say about it: It was created in Japan. Watch the sub first, then watch the dub. You'll have a much clearer idea of which is more natural. If you still like the dub, fine, but at least you have a sense that it was the altered version.

On that front, there are two things that seem to happen in a lot of dubs that bother me a lot. The first is the complete change of the sound of a character's voice. This happens most often with magical girl familiars. Compare the voices of Luna from Sailor Moon, sub and dub. She's supposed to sound cute, not motherly! Other series where this happens include Cardcaptor Sakura and Kiki's Delivery Service, just off the top of my head.

The other is the female lead who simply cannot act. The one strongest in my mind (simply because it was a videogame so I couldn't get a version with the original voice, so I actually had to sit through the whole thing dubbed) is Final Fantasy X. Yuna's dub actress sucks so much. I want to punch her in the face. Really, someone find her for me, I will give her a punch in the face. Almost every dub I watch, there's at least one character like this. Oh, and Spike Spencer... I f-ing hate Spike Spencer. He's the b*****d who did a terrible, terrible job with Shinji from Evangelion, among others. Just watch the End of Eva DVD... wait for that huge scream, rewind, switch language tracks. That's all you need to do to realize how much better the Japanese actor was. Everyone has all these praises for Spike Spencer, but I hate the man. Hate him with a firey passion.

Don't even get me started about Slayers, my favorite anime.

... whoah, sorry... I guess this is just something I feel rather strongly about. Possibly too strongly.......

Aeiii! Shadow! The bane of my existance. My son got the &%^$* PS2 game and plays it on a regular basis. Horrible butt-metal soundtrack, hideous graphics, no plot to speak of . . . . It offends my gaming sensibilities!! Die hedgepig die!

Haha... when I first read this, I thought you were talking about Shadow of the Hegemon, the book whose cover I photoshopped, and I was about to say, "What? They made a PS2 game based on that book? Wtf?" But then I realized you were talking about Shadow the Hedgehog, and then it all made sense.

And hey, I happen to like butt-metal. blaugh

Hey Shun, this isn't something that's going to affect you anytime in the near (and by near, I mean next 5-10 years, if ever) future, but my girlfriend and I were talking, and assuming we get married (which seems very likely) we might visit Hawaii for our honeymoon. So I could meet you and stuff!

Like I said, it's a long ways off (We're not even engaged yet, and don't have the money for a wedding, honeymoon, or even a ring....) and you may not even remember by the time it happens, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. Just kind of as a "wouldn't that be cool?" sort of thing.

For anyone with an hour and a half or so to kill...

I found a documentary on 9/11 that points to a lot of evidence it may have been orchestrated by our government. It's really scary if this guy is right. Most of his facts seem rather well-documented. Thought I should share.

. . . well put Zetan, but I think you've based your response on an SBA typo. Judging from the rest of her comment, I think she actually meant to say watch the Japanese version first, but messed up and typed English instead.

I too tend to prefer the original voices, which is why our kids wound up watching Kenshin in the original (BTW, improved their reading immensely!).

Neatness indeed. And --- Zetan's considering MARRIAGE?!?! Has anyone told the fangirls? There could be blood over this.

Butt metal has its place. It's place is not in videogames about hedgehogs. Then again, I'm biased--anyone even remotely responsible for subjecting me to that game's soundtrack / graphics / gameplay / plot should, IMHO, be taken out back, violated by an angry warthog named Mo-mo, stapled to the ground, set on fire, revisted by Mo-mo, and forced to watch Catwoman and Barbed Wire back-to-back repeatedly while film critics lecture them on the brilliance of Uwi Boll.

Then I'd get nasty . . . .

PSSHA! Teh SBA does not 'Typo.'

He read it right...

*dodges the rotten tomatoes being thrown*

Let me explain...

I agree entirely with everything Zetan said. I always prefer the Japanese versions of my anime... I don't even care if they are subbed. Actually, I tend to prefer it that way... Then I'm actually paying attention to what is going on on the screen instead of paying attention to those damned little words.

Which brings me to my point...

To actually enjoy Advent Children, I think one should watch it in English first and understand exactly what they are saying. Then return to the Japanese version and watch it without the subtitles to appreciate it fully. Because I can never really watch something when there's something to read on the screen... No matter how hard I try or how many times I've seen it or if I know what they're saying... My eyes automatically go there and it buggs me to no end.

So rather than watching the better version (Japanese) first and then watching the lesser version going "OMG this is freaking lame..." I suggest one watch the lesser version and then compare it to the better version to see how it really stacks up and how much better it is so as to not leave that 'disapointed' feeling.

To 'save the best for last' so to speak...

Then you can go ahead and pick your poison...

I hope that made sense. Otherwise, I completely agree with Zetan on the rest of everything he said.

Ah, now I see. I've watched subtitles for so long sometimes I forget whether a show I just watched was subbed or dubbed. Or I'll watch a dubbed show and later, when I remember scenes, will realize I'm subconciously replacing the dub with the voices I think I should have heard. I figure this means I'm subconsiously trilingual: just one small stroke or blow to the head and I'll be able to speak fluent Japanese and Cantonese, but will lose all ability to speak English. . . .

Lol... Sometimes I do the exact same thing.

In fact, I even did it with Advent Children when I watched it in English... I half expected Marlene to start speaking in Japanese after that long period of silence after Reno and the gang get (Well... I'm not going to give away spoilers... If you've seen it then you know what I'm talking about...) And when she didn't I still heard the whole part in Japanese. It took a while for my ears to adjust. @_@

And adding on to earlier conversation with Zetan, I think I should mention that on occasion there are Anime with voice actors that are better in English than in Japanese... *gasp* Yes it's true. Uncommon, but true...

Take Princess Tutu for example... (Yes, the series title is unfortunate but bear with me... It's an amazing show...) I happen to own it and I like to watch it in both English and Japanese. In most aspects, the voice actors are equally talented on both ends... Chris Patton (Who's Japanese counterpart voiced Cloud in Advent Children) makes Fakir just as sturing and heroic, if not just as pompus and arrogant, as he is in the Japanese version. And Jessica Boone is overtly delicious and sensual which is very hard for any Japanese woman to capture... (Let's be honest now... They all sound like 12 year olds! SO CUTE!) But the Japanese voice actress who plays Ahiru is not very good. She doesn't portray the notion of a duck at all... (Which is what the role is supposed to get across, thus why the character is named "Ahiru.") However, Luci Christian (Who I'm sure has stared in many of your favorite Animes...) is an amazing actress who's vocal abilities make me tremble in awe. She brings justice to the character and I must say that it is one Anime I prefer in english.

Plus hearing Takahiro Sakurai, the Japanese actor who plays Fakir speaking in German sounds really, really weird. @_@

Also... None of the meaning is lost in translation cause it's all based in Germany so all cultural references are set there as well. From what I've seen, it's all been translated beautifully...

Just thought I'd add that tibit that some Animes are better in English...
Don't shoot me.

I admit a preference for the Ranma 1/2 dub over the original. Probably the only time I've ever prefered the dubbed edition of an anime. . . . .
