This is one awesome idea! I'll be spreading the news to a few friends who would be completely into it. Its so hard to tell...And I'm shy so walking up to a girl and just hitting on her is hard for me. I'm afraid I'm hitting on someone taken or straight...Then its just awkward...
:3 This idea is awesome

it is an awesome idea....I wonder if some of my friends know this? *shrugs* course everyone in High School knew that most of my bi/lesbian friends were bi or lesbian...Tthey had no clue about me and so today when I went and saw my friends at the High School...They let visit after we graduate. anyway, my friend Robbin came up to and was I all "I had no idea!" kinda thing and I was all "yeah, I swing both ways, not just one way." She looked at me kinda funny then realized what I meant and smiled.

Honesty, I don`t see that working. At late 90's there was this fashion of wearing a ring at your thumb. Actually, it was this same code. If you were wearing that on the right hand thumb, you were "lesbian", and if you were wearing that at your left hand thumb, you were "bi" (or the contrary, I don`t remember which was what...) The thing is that people started wearing that just because it looked nice.
I still prefer the female + female symbol.

Oh, of course this kind of thing is going to happen--part of the purpose is that it lets you blend in. Obviously, non-queer people wear purple bracelets as well. But that's part of the point, really. If it was absolutely only queer individuals wearing the purple bracelet, it would be quickly picked up as a gay symbol and people wearing it might be at risk of being outed and ostracized for it. Because it's relatively subtle and could be coincidental, however, this makes it a safe way for those who are not out to communicate to other queer people that they identify.
The female x female symbol is a clearly lesbian symbol and cannot be misinterpreted as anything else--this makes it undesirable for those who are not out to wear it. Obviously, those who are out are easy enough to spot--the trick with this trend is to help spot those who aren't.

Although the sad thing was that I used to wear a ring, until the day one of my mom`s friend told her that in front of me... Unobtrusively, I removed the ring and stopped to wear it, and my mom didn`t put one thing with the other... I passed unoticed by them... lol

Ooo that's awesome! Purple's my favorite color so it'll work out nicely heart
1 question though: Does it have to be >string Or can it just be any plain purple braclet?

Late reply x.x
I think the reason it says string is just to narrow it down a bit, so I would go with string, but that doesn't mean you can't wear other purple bracelets.

Hi everyone!!! ^ ^
Just thought I'd post.
I read about this the other day and thougth it was a brilliant idea...Kudos!!
Anyway...I went home and found myself some purple yarn and made myself a little bracelet. I've been wearing it the past few days to school. So far I haven't seen any others...but I will definately pass on the word.
I think they should make something similar for I little Gaians lol.

littlesausage And were can someone get one of these bracelets? Actually, any purple bracelet or string tied around your wrist works. I've heard of this working once or twice to ID others, and I've seen it in people around me. =D Usually it was one of those braided thread bracelets, that I've seen--because one of my friends made those for people, haha. Anyway, they're not only used for gay girls, but also for queer males.
But mostly, how well this works relies upon spreading the word and wearing the string/bracelet/etc.

*starts rummaging around for purple string* I think this is a good idea I am not very good at telling if someone is straight or not and even though I'm not going to go and glomp someone wearing purple string, its nice to think that they would be alright to talk to (plus I enjoy being ninja stealthy)

my heart will be forever his... I don't use a string but I do use a purple hair band on my wrist. It's usually there all the time (unless I'm actually using it) I'm taken by a man mind you but I want to use it as a sign that tells other bi/lesbians that I'm a friend and support them!
...I would die for his love....
