Unfortunately Wendy could not escape thoughts of Farris or her father, even in her sleep.
A younger 15 year old Wendy stood on the deck of the Ocean’s Tears looking at the island of Tortuga and tearing up pieces of paper then letting it fall into the water. She didn’t look all that different, her face was a little brighter with youth and her jet black hair fell to the top of her butt. Just like always her father had forced her to stay on the ship. It made her angry, being forced to stay on the ship when they reached islands like this, filled with drinking, whores, and many other things Dan was trying to protect Wendy from.
When she ran out of paper she sighed and let her head drop and hang between her shoulders. Just as she did she felt a dagger at her back. She immediately froze and almost even stopped breathing.
“Never let your guard down poppit.” Farris’s voice whispered in her ear.
Wendy spun around and gave him a playful glare. He slid his dagger back into its sheath and laughed at her a bit. “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be on the island with all the other men? And where’s my guard?” Wendy asked looking around. She thought it was Cook’s turn to watch her this time. Yes, her father was obsessive enough to make somebody stay behind and make sure she didn’t try and sneak on the island.
“Ah, I told him I’d watch you tonight.” He shrugged. “I’ve seen plenty of places like this, nothing new. Besides I thought you could use some company.”
“Yeah…I hate that father makes me stay here all the time!” She said not bothering to hide her anger as she turned back to the sea. “I don’t get it…I’m almost 16, a pirate and he won’t even let me kiss a man…”
“Hey, don’t get so worried about it kid. Like you said you’re almost 16. I’m sure he’ll let you do more then.” Farris said trying to be a little comforting.
Wendy shook her head. “He told me just today that I could start going on to islands like this when I was 20 Farris…I don’t think so.”
Farris nodded and leaned next to her. “It’s not that great really….just a kiss.” He shrugged trying to make her feel better.
It really didn’t however make her feel any better. She remained silent for a minute then turned to look at Farris. “Farris…can I ask you something?”
Farris looked at her for a second raising one eyebrow. “Wendy I can’t…you know I can’t. Your father would kill me.” He told her before she could ask him. He pushed off of the railing and stood so he wasn’t as close. “He’ll throw me off the ship Wendy!” He said louder, not angry at her though.
“Please Farris! I won’t tell him! And like you said it’s just a kiss…I just want to know what it’s like and you’ve kissed plenty of women.” She pleaded following him and grabbing his hand before he tried to walk away. “I know I’m just your friend and I’m not asking you more than one kiss….please.” She said softer looking at him with almost desperate eyes.
Farris looked at her dark green eyes and it looked for a moment like he might say yes, but he quickly looked away and shook his head. "Wendy...I like it here and I want to stay here. I can't disobey your father." He said gently.
Wendy was however not one to take no for an answer. If she really wanted somthing she would get it. She leaned forward and kissed him anyways. The both of them pulled closer, not meaning for the kiss to have lasted quite that long.
It was however interrupted as a furious Dan ripped the two of them apart.
“What the hell are you doing with my daughter?!” The massive man growled at Farris as he pushed Wendy behind him and pushed Farris against the mast, one hand the boy’s chest holding him down.
“Dad, leave him alone!” Wendy cried pulling on her dad’s arm. “He didn’t do anything, it's my fault, I made him do it.” She insisted knowing that she would not get in nearly as much trouble as Farris.
“Wendy go to your room.” Dan said out of the side of his mouth.
“ No!” Wendy protested stubbornly. "It's my fault, punish me not him. He-"
“Wendy… do as I say.” Dan said threateningly cutting her off before she could speak any more.
“Wendy…” Farris growled at her as she opened her mouth again to protest.
Wendy felt bad for what she had done and did not want to leave Farris alone with her father in trouble for somthing that wasn't his fault, but she reluctantly left. What else could she do? The last thing she could hear as she was walking below deck was, “How dare you do something like that after all I’ve done for you!”
Wendy turned over in Farris's bed. At first she was surprised to be in his room and she sat up quickly afraid of what she may have done. However when she realized she was fully clothed (well except for her shoes.)and the only one in the room it all slowly came back to her. She held her head that was pounding from all the rum she had drank.
She thought back to her dream. She felt so bad about it. It was 6 years ago and she still felt bad about it. She still didn't know what happened when she had left. She was just glad Farris hadn't gotten kicked off because of her...she was afraid to ask him then, afraid he might get mad at her. She couldn't remember if she even apologized for it.
Unable to take it much more she opened the door to the room and walked up to the deck. Knowing Farris he was probably still on the job.

The rock of the ship, creak of the wood and soft splashing of the waves calmed Farris down. It wasn’t that he was mad or anything, he was just slightly annoyed. This was always happening since as long as he could remember. Whenever Wendy was interested of curious about boys, she came to him.
He can remember playing “I’ll show you mine…” behind the barrels in the supplies level one night when they were supposed to be sleeping. Wendy was about six and Farris eight. When she was twelve and started liking guys, fawning over all the older crew members, he was the one that explained a guys mind to her, not her father. He was the one she complained to about never getting off the ship because she was a girl. He was her first kiss-Oh-now that was interesting. That was a…bad day. Farris didn’t want to think about that day. But he was the person she came to when she wanted to know things about bedding with a man, what she should do, expect. Farris was the one that held her as she cried over boys and men, for so many years he’s stopped counting.
Farris sighed as his thoughts flew around him and he started dreaming…or perhaps remembering…
He was small again. Very small. So small the people’s shoes were what mattered to him the most, that was what he saw all day, what he smelt. If he happened to crane his neck up high enough, he might see bottles passing hands and papers or dangly things he would later know as charms switch owners. But mostly he was occupied with the rats. He had a stick and was to beat the rats with the stick if they got to close to the food. If the rat was too big he would holler, call for his mama or someone names Jay…call and they would help. But don’t call to often or- ‘CRACK’ or ‘THWAK’ your hit and your down, bruises fad, but the scars stay forever.
He was bigger now. It was a person’s knees that he carried about most. When he looked up he saw belt buckles, or a purses. Oh! If he saw a purse. He knew what to do…reach up very slowly after her had paid mama and open it ever so slowly, taking out the top coins he could reach. Never try to over do himself. A few coins was better then no coins, or no breath. That’s what he would have if he was caught. No breath, no life, no food.
Farris was older sill. He sat in the corner of the room, stealthily putting that day’s good in the box under the lose brick in the corner. Carefully, slowly, one hand behind his back. Don’t draw attention to yourself. Don’t let the man know you’re there. Slowly, but the purses in box. Slid the box into the hole, put the bricks back, cover it with dirt and straw, but wait, wait until the man leaves it makes too much noise. But the man isn’t leaving, isn’t going. He’s grabbed ma by her shirt and her necklaces. He’s got a knife!! Quiet Farris, quiet. He’s pulling her closer, put his nife to her throat and asked her something. The words have faded with time, but the look of determination on ma’s face is the same. The man angers and yells. Pulling the necklaces off, he stuffs them in his bag. He takes the rings two, knife still held up to her neck. She grins, says something the man blow up. Slashing the knife across her throat. Blood, dripping, bright crimson everywhere.
Farris woke with a start, murmuring to himself. “Ma…” he said softly, trying to find some way to push the memory away. Any way…
Farris didn’t have a problem with blood like Dan thought he might. Now that he thinks of it, it is surprising. But maybe he saw so much that time, that it doesn’t faze him anymore…Shrugging the man looked up at the stars, reciting the constellations Dan had taught him. “Tha drinkin’ cup, the cat, the dog, the ship, the connon…”

Wendy saw Farris sitting by the door and raced over to him. She didn’t notice that he was actually awake, though she didn't really care either way. She wanted to apologize and she wanted to apologize now “Farris!” She shouted in a whisper ((lol, kinda contradicts itself huh?)) shaking him, only then realizing he was in fact wake.
She let go of him before she continued. “Farris I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to! I thought he was gone! I really didn’t mean to get you in trouble that day I kissed you, honest. I tried to tell him it was my fault I really did! I’m sorry! I’m sorry it took me so long to say so! I was afraid you were mad at me and I didn’t want to make it any worse.” She told him frantically almost in tears by the time she was done. “I wish I could take it back Farris…I’m so sorry.” She said softer down casting her eyes as if she weren’t worthy of looking in his eyes.

Farris looked at her the minute she shook him. He was confused at first and then remembered what she was talking about. Wendy's first kiss...Farris looked out to the center mast and he coudl remember. He rememebrs the feel of the ropes pressin gitno hsi back, Dan hovering over him. That was the day that he made that promise. "You have to promis. YOu'll never do anything with my Wendy. Never. I do not want her ending up heartboken over one of us. We have the sea in our veins and we can't settle down. Promise you will never let my little girl get her heart broken." He had said. Farris had promised, but he never said to with thing he promised to.
Farris reached for her and pulle dher into the familure position with her sitting on his lap, legs over one side, head resting on his oposite shoulder. "I accept you apology. Thank you." He rocked her gently and rubbed her back. "Wendy...Thank you." he said again, but didn't say what the thanks was for.

"I'm thanking you for being my friend." He said softly, simply. He inhaled hte sent of her. Rum, but under that...Saltwater, apples and a sent the was so uniquly Wendy...

Wendy buried her face in his shoulder when he hugged her unable to keep the tears back now. "Why?" Came her slightly muffled voice. "Why do you have to make it so difficult? Why do you have to be so...perfect Farris? If you were just like every other pirate it wouldn't be so hard..." She said hoping he understood what she meant.

Farris didn't laugh, but he could have. He held her, continuing to rub her back, gathering comfort in her arms. "I'm not perfict Wendy. I have a past frombefore hsi boat and a reputaion on an off it. I am jsut like every other pirate. And I'll never look at you again if you don't want me to." He added softly.

Wendy smiled back at him and let one hand go to wipe her eyes. She had wondered what had happened that night, but then did it really matter? Maybe it was time she stopped listening to everything her father told her.
Wendy looked at him and nodded her head yes. "No..." She said and grinned softly before leaning forward and kissing him.

Farris smiled and looking into Wendy's green eyes. "Wendy..." he said, sundenly and for some unexplaninble reason, he was nervous. His eyes stormed, changing fromblue to a deep dark blue almost balck, to a chruning green color. "Wendy..." he whispered, his fingers finding their way into her hiar, curling. "Oh...baby." he said calling her his secret nickname for her for the first real time.

Wendy blushed and kissed him again, letting this last just a little longer than the others. "Farris....never call me that in front of the crew." She said jokingly refering to him calling her baby.
She saw his eyes rapidly changing colors and could feel his heart speed up. It made her smile a bit that he was nervous. "Relax.." She whispered moving a hand on his chest up to his shoulder in a circular, almost massaging motion.
