No, it's not individualistic, but it is to individuals.
When I first started the guild I invited just anyone. I still accept everyone, but now when I invite I look for more original seeming people, and people who seem more likely to participate or to carry a worthy discussion ^_^
I either saw you in some forum or found humor in a profile or whatever, and decided to send a join request ^_^

Hello, I'm WatersMoon110, or AJ. I've been on Gaia for about a year and a half. I spend just about all of my time on Gaia in the ED. I am 23 and a junior in college.
I imagine that I was most likely "found" in the ED.
