=History=(Please Note: In order to find out what happened in Detail on the bridge, you MUST RP with Elias. He is not one to brag and that is his worst memory.)In Elias's Early childhood, he had two good friends. Davidryl who was his best friend whom he did everything with, and Rolan who he met as a yearling and admired for his combats skill and confidence. Having no warrior training of his own meant that they stayed just friends for awhile until the warning of the talons came.
When sgt. Elias Joined the military It was so his many siblings wouldn't have to suffer. He would protect them so they would never see war. His Parents were simple but kind herla, As such he was not a herla of higher learning. Never the less, he was a moral young buck, who knew the value of hard work and honesty.
What he lacked in book smarts he made up for in a wealth of common sense a intuition. It was because Rolan Knowing his character, coupled with the fact that he was on of the first to sign up and complete training that he was made a captain. He picked Davidryl to join he squad, Later a Medic was assigned to him. As the war went on they earned nicknames Davidryl became "Big D" and Elias earned the nickname of Ace, for his instinct and strategy skills.
He knew he could fight, and that was enough. But what it cost him he never could have imagined. His leg, yes. But that was nothing compared to his buddies, who forever in his mind, would be young. These bucks who he ate with, shivered in the damp and the dark with, laughed with and dreamed about coming home with, he would never see them again.
But when he closed his eyes they were there. The same age, the same smiles the same blank stare as they covered them with brush and took their tags knowing they would not be there tomorrow. The The Foothills and Icefall Woodlands would haunt his nightmares for the rest of his life.
After the war, when he hovered in the place between wakefulness and sleep,he could hear the screams and smell the heavy heat of the summer night.
The frantic shouts as they raced through the muck. His harsh breathing, as his jaws clenched around his wrapped hilt and the blood rushing in his ears. The adrenaline shock of these random, frantic battles.
The sounds of the talons whipping through the grass then, Cold Empty Silence.
That chilled you to the bone, the forest too dark to see the snout in front of your face.
The moisture that settled in his scales that damp rot that itched and stung. (Forest rot they called it. Then it was onward the next march through the trees, starving, sweating and sleep deprived.
The enemy hid well. Guerrilla warfare, that neat little term they coined to explain the mess and the terror they lived with. Quick strikes an devastation. They'd lay in trenches of bush and grass cover two to three bucks and in a parameter a set of nine so that they couldn't be ambushed.
Same business Day in Day out. Trying to stay alive.
He lost his best friend and his leg at the Battle of Moss Bridge, and it's his tags, he wears, not his own, For he is alive. It was Big D, who needed to be remembered. If only his leg had not been cut out from under him, if he hadn't been pushed from the lines, he could have saved him. They had each others backs, but D pushed him back at the last minute, and was gutted before his eyes. The Talons had made a last desperate surge even though they knew they had lost. It was all Elias could do to clutch his best friends tags as he went down.
Then he looked down almost in a trance to see his stump gushing blood at an alarming rate. If Not for Medic, who would have bled out and joined his fallen friend on that bridge. Some Days, he wished he had.
For a while, every time he smelled the fresh air of the morning it made him nothing but ill. It would bring him back to that last battle, and being brought into base camp.
The dew on the grass as they moved into CZ (clearance zone)…that smell of the dead and the dying, of burnt carcasses, Rotten infection and drying blood. Then the long, slow, agonizing weeks of recovery. Learning to use a metal limb that was not his own.
Once up and about Elias felt empty, and he would have stayed in his room, if he had not over heard the nurses saying that Rolan had been brought in, and that he even if he lived too might loose his leg.
no....NO.NO!It was as if someone had electrified his system. Once they had gone, he tore out of the small room as fast as his legs would carry him. Staggering about he went on a Frantic search for For the Medic from his Unit, which caused much confusion. Once he found him, he rushed over to Where Rolan was being tended to insisting that His medic be the one to handle it "Rather then some green no account fool who didn't know what they were doing. Thus, Rolan's Leg was spared. Elias spent the remainder of the war at base camp, helping with Logistics, and Planning. Then one day it was over....they began to burn their dead, and he was Free...to go home.
Elias wakes, opens his eyes.
His leg is gone.
He is home.
But his soul is with those he lost out in the muck and the filth where he lived second to second. Then it mattered. His men, his friends they mattered.
He's alive, But he's not living.
He was so certain of what he fought for, but when he came home, he was hollow.
These Herla, his family, the children. None of them Knew, what it cost them. So that they could complain about mundane things, and go on living their precious precious lives with no IDEA if not for them, there'd be no life to live.
Yet they are free and thats what matters. He sees the pity in their eyes when they look at his leg, The fear in their eyes when they hear his voice ruined by talon claws and glance over his scars. They are sad, They thank him, they "honor" him. War is not to be honored. He is an alien in this world he so desperately wished to return to.
They do not understand these civilians.
Just as he has come to understand he will never be one of them again.
"I am a solider" The words rare rasped and hang in the air, but there is no one to hear them.
---------------------------------
I went where others feared to go,
and did what others failed to do.
I asked for nothing from those who gave nothing
And reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness…
Should I fail.
I have seen the Face of terror,
Felt the stinging cold fear
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments love.
I have cried, Pained, and Hoped…
But most of all I have lived times others would say are best forgotten.
At least someday I will be able to say that I am proud of who I was…
A Soldier.
