So started Anlach. his mother had told him much about it, but it also seemed and exciting time, because it meant she got to be with his father, cource, he had little interest in this event. and now that he was older, having lost his fawn spots, and even started to grow his first antlers, he was starting to take a fondness for venturing out on his own. not really having many friends yet... well Herla friends at least. he often followed the river up, to pay a visit to the old Rabbit Egas.

"Eeeegas" he called into the hole. nose puffing softly at the edges, his tail wagging excitedly. "Egas, come out and play"

Gracefully the young hind glided. She did not twitch anxiously as many deer do -- every flick of her ear and flutter of her tail was fluid as the river by which she grazed. Every step of her hooves was part of a half-hidden dance to a music that she did not hear but rather felt. When she lifted her head to survey the area her gaze was serene and purposeful. She was always poised on the brink of motion; even in stillness every muscle was under control.

She had been giving the fawn a curious glance from a distance once in a while as he picked his way up the river. He was the son of Hitanie, if she remembered correctly. And she assumed that she did, for his coat was very distinct with its splash of gold. He seemed to her to be a friendly sort, though maybe a little strange. Nothing wrong with that.

When he began making strange noises into a hole she became more curious. It was partly this curiosity, partly a strong maternal instinct that caused her to lilt over to the young deer. She slowed when she came near and paused, as light as motion at rest, and smiled. "I simply must ask... what are you doing?"

taking a pause from his pleading calls to the stubborn Egas, he jerked his head up, turning his head in surprise to find that a Hind had approached him.
"oh" he started, trying to organize the words in his head, slowly getting over the unexpected arrival of company.
it didn't help of cource, that at the moment he opened his mouth to speak, a spray of dirt flew out of the hole, hitting the young Calf in the face.
"Phoo" he shook his head, spitting dirt out of his mouth.
raising his eyebrows he stared up at the pretty Hind, ears falling back against his head
"umm... Talking to my friend" he said, tongue hanging out of his mouth as he smiled bashfully.

Her smile widened at his bashfulness. She had an urge to go over and wipe the dirt off of his face, but she could tell by the very fact that he was out here on his own that he was in an independent stage and would probably not take kindly to having some strange deer act like she was his mother. Inwardly she brushed the urge aside. "Who is your friend?" There did not appear to be anyone around, but maybe his friend was imaginary or something. Fawns had such great imagination.

he sneezed, shakeing his head again, then pawed at the ground by the hole.
"his name is Egas, but he does not like to come out very much."
he explained.
poking his nose by the hole again, and speaking in the gibberish again
"even though we will have allot of fun"

"my name is Feanaro" he said suddenly, lifting his head up again.
if Egas didn't want to play with him. maybe this Hind would. "whats your name?"

Ah so the friend was in the hole. Of course. Since whatever it was had flung dirt in his face she knew it wasn't imaginary, so maybe it was a mole or something. She trotted a little closer and peered into the hole, wondering what was down there, but kept her distance because of the dirt that had sprayed up. "I hope Egas comes out so I can meet him."

The gibberish made her grin. He had his own language to talk to his friend! That was adorable. She was still grinning when he introduced himself. She dipped her head tranquilly. "I'm Hazel. Very pleased to meet you, Feanaro."

"I like that name" he said brightly. then glanced back at the hole
"I don't know if Egas wants to come out. I wish he does... he's really smart!" turning back to Hazel excitedly and nodding "but he likes to call other pretty mean names.
he lowers his ears, tail still wagging, and tilted his head to the side, looking down at the hole.
"I don't think he wants to play today"

a wave of angry chirps rose up from the hole, causing Feanaro to stop wagging his tail.
looking a little disappointed he looked up at Hazel "see?"

"Aw, well that's too bad. Maybe another day." Then she had an idea and cheerfully added, "Tell Egas that I say he should stop being such a grump." Laughing, she danced around to be on Feanaro's other side, watching the hole expectantly.

"ok!" he said excitedly and spoke into the hole again.
"hey Egas! Miss Hazel things you should stop being a grump"

"BAH!" came a response,
and suddenly two long ears and an old Rabbit head poke out from the hole. his stern glare turned to Hazel as he studied her for a moment
"Grump? grump? who you callin' a grump you flutter hoofed grass sucker"

Feanaro lifted his head back up, looking uncomfortable.

For a few moments she stared in pure astonishment at the elderly lera chattering incoherently at her. But she recovered quickly and with her customary elegance, smiling with half-hooded eyes and a confident lift of her head. "Feanaro," she said gravely, "You tell Egas that he needs to mind his manners. I don't have to know what he is saying to see that he is rude, and obviously still a grump." She gave Feanaro a secretive wink and then raised her brow sternly at the rabbit.

Feanaro stared up at her with wide eyes. listening to her instructions carefully before turning back to the Rabbit, and repeating her words in his tongue.

the Rabbit didn't look happy at all t hear that. and continued his wild chatter, at Feanaro, then turned to Hazel and told her off. then finally, with much kicking of Dirt at the two Herla, he vanished inside of his hole again

"he didn't like that" Feanaro said. shaking the dirt off his muzzle and looking up at Hazel, not to keen on translating the Rabbits words.
"I think this means he won't want to play with me for a while now" he looked a little saddened by this thought.

Unusual... it was actually quite easy to be convinced that Feanaro was not just babbling at the rabbit but was actually conversing with him. Hazel blinked at this curious idea. She was never one to immediately dismiss things that others found to be ridiculous. Then she smiled at the fawn. "What were you going to play? Maybe Egas is in too foul a mood, but I might join you." She drifted a couple of paces to the side out of some subconscious compulsion to not remain long at rest, still looking at him.

"well..." Feanaro thought for a moment "he never really plays with me... I beg him allot, but he always stays in his hole, saying if he goes out that Jasper might get him. its fun to listen to him talk., even if its not always nice." he grinned.
"I don't know many games. other then Egas I don;t have any friends... do you know any games?" he asked, perking up and looking at her expectantly

"Who is Jasper?" An outrider, perhaps. Hazel remembered being scared of the outriders when she was a fawn -- they were so tall and their antlers so imposing, though she knew they were there to protect her.

She felt a pang of sadness at Feanaro's pronouncement that his only friend was that cranky old rabbit. He seemed to be a charming calf. Maybe it was just the fact that he spoke to a rabbit that kept the other younglings away.

Try as she might, she could remember no games that were for only two to play. She had been friendly with a great many of the other young deer in the herd. "I know a few, but they are games that work best with large groups." With a smile she said lightly, "Don't worry. We can come up with our own." She looked at their surroundings and considered them. A leaf floating in the river gave her an idea.

"How about a race?" She poked at the ground with her hoof, freeing from the tangle a flexible gray-ish stick with a spray of long pine needles dangling from it. "You pick something that will float, something distinctive, and we'll put them in the river and see which one wins the race."
