Okay. I've wanted to add poetry contests and competitions to the guild for months now. We've even reserved one of the sub-forums for it. As you can see, it's still reserved and I want to do something about that. I need all of your help and suggestions to get it rolling.
So if you can think of anything that would help or maybe categories to be judged in, please add your opinion.
Some things that have been suggested before include:
-Crew judging the competitions.
-Entry fees and donated items as prizes.
-Judges are disqualified from entering any contests they are judging.
See? We haven't really gotten too far on it. Those are just common sense based. The problem with the first is that most of the crew is not active right now. So that doesn't really work out.
So, please comment below with rules, guidelines, categories, or anything you think is relevant. If you guys want competitions, we need your help to get started.

The lack of administration at the moment is a major issue to me, but there isn't much that can be done about that yet. As far as categories, we could do anything from theme based(love, depression, war, etc.) to genre based(sestina, free verse, shakespherian, etc.).
Judging could be based on a point system with fields like how well they applied the rules of a specific form, flow, concentration on topic, etc.
As far as judging goes, I suggest we have the contest outside of the guild so we could get the opinions of others, but restrict the people who can enter by who is in the guild or not.
I know this is just a start, but hey, it is better than nothing.

What I meant to say was that we should have the contests outside the guild...as in the writer's area of the main Gaian forum. Perhaps the chatterbox. All we would have to do is regulate who is in the guild or not and we would have additional opinions and votes to make the judging fair.
Does that make more sense?

Ahh, okay. Makes sense to me now. I'll give it a little while for other people to make suggestions. If we choose to do that, I'll have to get together with you and we can figure out the details of it then.

hmmm Isis has indeed been thinking on this, but she conveiniently forgot to mention she had posted this at school and thus I was unable to help. I'll try to come up with a few things, but I'm not sure how much I'll be able to contribute.
and Isis please include stuff like this when you mention the guild in conversation and I haven't been on. I do in fact like to be kept up to date.

I've some suggestions.
ONE: There should be Three Categories of Competition:
I: Light Poetry
II: Dark Poetry
III: Independent Style Poetry ((Poetry that is neither light nor dark))
TWO: There should be five judges, and no judge should score their own works. I suggest the first four judges be the four senior members of the guild: Isis, Chaos, Kharne, and Myself, and our fifth judge should be elected by us before each round of competition.
THREE: I suggest a ten gold entry fee, to be paid via donation to the guild. I suggest a winning prize of five gold for every entry to the competition, and occasionally a collectable item donated by a member of the guild.
FOUR: Limit of ONE entry per author
FIVE: The categories for judging should be:
I: Style
II: Imagery
III: Effectiveness
IV: Flow
V: Overall effect
SIX: I believe that a competition should be held every two weeks, giving members of the guild more than enough time to come up with a unique work for competition.
SEVEN: I feel that for these rules of competition to be ratified, Two-Thirds of the active members of the guild should vote yes for these rules, AFTER the captain and vice-captain have overlooked and agreed with the rules. If any holes need filling, let me know and I'll gladly explain what I have in mind.

Very nice Josh, very nice. My only problem is that the contest few should be sent to a guild mule created for such a purpose. My reasoning behind this is that we have to find some way to generate prizes and how are we supposed to do that if our funds are going into the guild. We cannot retrieve funds from the guild itself.
Otherwise, I see no reason why your ideas would not be implemented.

I Want to Scream...personally I would want cold hard cash as prizes. and we could have categories such as Love or Death or happyness. or somehting like that. Naythign broad that gives us alot of room to mess around with. ...Until My Throat Bleeds

Christophe, the guild mule is an excellent idea, but I suggest that multiple people have access to the mule... for security reasons... not that I don't trust anyone here, but if something WERE to happen, we'd have more than one witness. Beyond the mule, do you have any other ideas? And cash would be impossible, since a majority of our members are quite poor. mrgreen

Thanks. I agree though. The less complex, the better though, that way IF something were to happen, it wouldn't be such an issue.

I take it we're never actually gonna have this contest? *Cries, LOTS* This's been in the works for ages, and it seems that our attendance has dropped to a low that doesn't seem to be climbing anywhere... and outside that, nobody's taking the initiative to get any of this underway... I understand tat people are busy... but sheesh... the last time anything was said about this was a month and a half ago...

-small Entry fees and donated items as prizes. (some people may have gold problems.)
-Judges are disqualified from entering any contests they are judging.
-Don't restrict the creativity of the poems (in other words don't set standards like only 20 lines long and 10 words per line, it really ticks some people off[like me] and makes it harder to get out the message you want in the poem)
-no poems that have already been entered in the forum (write something new)
-the contest should last a week so everyone has a chance to enter
-all poems should only be judged at the end of the contest and no sooner
-all members should be incouraged to enter (everyone should have a chance to compete)
that's all the rule suggestions i've come up with so far... are they ok?
