i'm writing a series about a family. the mom has an ongoing competion with a neighbor that always has to be better then everyone and makes a lot of women feel inferior about their parenting skills. my question is has any of you ever encountered a woman like this and can you share some stories please? i basicly need a little more help with this character.

Oh DEFINATELY, I've had people act like that sooo many times.

Like those women who think they're kids are going to be geniuses cause they wer gullible enough to buy those "Baby Mozart/Einstein" videos. They think because they cram all that over a baby's head junk they are better than me, who figures out Sesame Street and making sure the baby is happy is more important.

On this group I used to be on babycenter.com, I would mention Logan was a little behind on things when he was younger. They would proceed to tell me that he's probably mentally handicapped or retarded and brag in MY thread about how their kid said Mama at 4 months (when the baby is just babbling).

Most of the time I think it has to do with that the women who are like this are definately better off than I. They are able to get the most expensive of everything and that somehow means their parenting is better than mine. I dunno.

I've most definately come across people like that. For some reason ( I'm guessing because I'm a 19 year old mother) other mothers, and even people without kids feel the need to tell me that my son is going to grow up to be a pot-head, and end up in jai, because I don't have the proper skills to be a parent. I never quite know how to express my anger without giving them a beat-down....which I don't do, as I'm not to keen on landing myself in jail.

let me tell ya.. my biggest problem of that comes from my mom. i mean.. god bless her soul.. she just ticks me off.. and she's been getting better about not doing it.. but i had to push her away and shut her out of naaman's life to get here...

But.. it always kills me how she loves to act like she's ******** mother of the century.. like she always did everything a mother should do.. and how because i'm not just like her and not doing everything the way she would.. like it makes me a bad mother.. but she never actually says it... she just makes lots of stuff insinuating it... makes me sooo bothered. usually i won't call her or go over there for a few months... and i mean.. for someone who's so freaking goddam perfect who never messed up anything... stare rolleyes she sure isn't the picture of perfect grandma.. as she rarely comes and takes naaman anywhere or does anything special with him.. but watch.. her new husband's grandson.. any chance they get to do stuff with him.. they'll do it. it just sucks. and i think it's because i make it clear i want to be my own person and do things my own way.. and raise my son how i see fit.. and she doesn't think i should.. and that i'm ruined.. stare

Sounds like an extreme version of my mother. I got mine to back off by saying "If you're so good, then how come you can't trust my ways when you're the one who raised me?" It's hard to argue with that. 3nodding

Oh yeah graceangel. I have to agree on that. My mom is the same way. Same with the man. They all have this ideal of how my motherness should act/be. I am not that too bad. hehe

hmm.. well, thing is she never comes out and says she's perfect and how terrible i am.. just hints around it. because she'd never want to let anyone be able to truthfully say of her having said those things really.... but.. you can tell when someone is meaning it. but, i'll have to try that sometime. xd see what kind of reaction i get. i must say tho.. since we moved away from living with her and been busy living our life without her.. she's slowly getting better. lol. she wanted us to move with her into a new rental house.. and we were like.. yeah right. and she claims everyone will have equal rights. But we all know better; once we're all settled there.. she'll want total control and to run teh show cuz she thinks she's so good at it.

I've encountered so many mothers like that, most of them were from the babycenter.com forums, and there are a couple of online mothers who seem to think that we're all inferior compared to them.

What I don't get, is the nazi lactavists *their choice of a label, not mine...they're proud to be considered 'hardcore breastfeeders'*. Now, I do think that breast is best, but I DON'T think that mothers who breastfeed should insult mothers who do not...I was only able to breastfeed my eldest daughter for 3 months and then she wanted NOTHING to do with my ol' boobs...no matter how I tried, she was no longer interested, so I fed her formula and she was just fine. With my youngest daughter, she was such a big baby *she was 10 pounds 7 ounces at birth*, I just could not satisfy her demand for milk and so I had to forumla feed her as well. When I've explained my situation, these ignorant/rude mothers insinuate that I was just 'lazy' and that I could have breastfed if I wanted to...these mothers need a good boot in the a**.

Oh, and then you have the mothers who do everything naturally...co-sleeping instead of a crib, cloth diapers instead of store bought, natural birth instead of having their baby at the hospital...home made food instead of store bought...they don't use pacifiers, they wash their babies clothes by hand, etc etc. I have had a drug free and a drug induced labour and I don't think that I am better for not using drugs for my second labour *I didn't have the chance to use meds, I was progressing too fast*, nor do I think I"m a bad parent for letting my daughters sleep in their crib *I would let them sleep with me when they were sick or having a rough night, but not every night* and use the occasional pacifier *neither of them use one, they both stopped using one when they were 1 year old*. I do not look down at different parenting styles, but I HATE mothers who compete...who insult other mothes for not doing what THEY do..they are annoying as hell and need to shut the hell up.

I think it's just people in general and how they say things. Such as I did buy baby mozart DVDs for my son (all of them) and I don't think him being smart is from those DVDs. I think SS is a stupid show and Elmo bugs me to no end. I taught my son to turn off the televison when Barney comes on biggrin He's happy with baby mozart

Nope I don't think it's because you're a 19 year old mother it's because at the very end of your sentence you say you don't have the proper skills to be a parent. If you don't have them then learn them. You express your anger by learning every damn thing you can about raising a child and then you raise a good child. At least that's how I expressed my anger. Granted he's only 4 and my other one is 18 months, but they're pretty good kids so far that listen and say please and thank you. Well not the 18 month old one since he never talks stare

OP just look at this thread for inspiration. There are so many parents out there that aren't sure if they're doing it right so they tear down someone else's parenting choices inorder to make their own choices seem better. Validate themselves as good parents. In past threads on different boards I've been told I ******** up by keeping my son (I was 17 when I had him) and that I should have given him to a nice two parent home. Never mind the fact that his father and I are married and have a nice two parent home, that I finished highschool while caring for him and while my husband was at bootcamp and tech school. Somehow I'm cheating him by being a young parent. xp There are countless women out there that even with proof of their kids doing bad stuff will defend the kid and say it's your fault. I had a child sneak in to my garage and steal soda. Not just any soda, it was my star wars limited edition obi wan kanobi can that i got after seeing my first star wars movie ever. Even though we caught him with it and yes I pressed charges, it wasn't her fault it was mine for having it in our garage while we were movie (eye roll). My favorite is when some brat hits my son and I tell the kid to back off the parent gets mad at me? Then there are the parents that have to one up you. If your kid spoke his first word at 9 months then their kid spoke at 8 months. If your kid is getting As and Bs in school then their kid is getting all As. If your kid is like second chair in band, their kid is first. If ..... well you get the picture. They're the type of people you don't want to share good news with because they'll turn it around to talk about their kid and one up you domokun

Yeah, I can agree with you gamerbabe, although I don't want you to think I think all moms who ge those tapes are like that. I just get so mad when I was told that SS and other shows besides anything that isn't Baby Mozart (I just have serious problems with those tapes, they personally drive me nuts, but work great for other moms) is just going to make my son a "mediocre" child. I was told that my son will probably be serving their children fast food.....because of what a kid watches???

I think the main thing some parents forget is it's their lives, it's not a competition, we love our kids and want the best for them, the how and what irrelevant!

sweatdrop I can't help in this thread, but just wanted to say something in regards to the last post (edit, not any more because Luna posted again. XD ): I think she meant that they assume that because she's 19 that she has no parenting skills...not that she doesn't indeed have them. It's the same predjudice you mentioned having experienced later in your post.

Ah makes sense then. She'll get that her whole time though. I found that I just don't tell people my age. They assume my husband and I are around 25 or 26 ish, but he's barely 22 and I'm 21. I guess those extra four years make you soooooo much smarter rolleyes yeah right lol

lunashock I bought the mozart ones because SS drives me nuts lol. Well that and the first DVD was a gift and it kept my FIL, three BILs and my son watching it for the whole thing. Nothing funnier then watching grown men watching it slack jawed. eek I don't think it will effect how they do later on in life. I think one of the reasons the mozart DVDs get rave reviews is because of active parents and that's really all you need for a good kid right? I laugh when parents tout something or other as the *only* way to do something in order to get a good kid because most of them have toddlers or preschoolers. Yeah give it time first and see if the method works before you bash other parents. grrrr (not you, them. in case that wasn't clear)

Good points Girls...let us not forget about those people who say that if we put our kids in time out or *God forbid* spank them...we are evil, abusive people who shouldn't be allowed to have children in the first place. I am sick and tired of people saying that you should redirect or rationalize with a toddler. Yes, redirecting works well in some situations but there are times when you NEED to yell, swat or otherwise startle them to teach then that *for instance* poking things into the electrical outlet is bad. You are not going to be able to redirect them every minute of every day and I, personally, don't think they learn anything from redirection....it's more of a tempory distraction. As for rationalizing....please...they can't even communicate very well - how the hell are you supposed to talk them through things?? Honestly, there are times I have yelled, threatened, bribed, (oh yeah that is called rewarding) or as a last resort spanked if need be.....does that make me a bad parent?? I don't think so.....I see it more like I care enough to do what I have to to keep them safe and help them to grow into loving, respectful, good people who are able to function well within society. That's my rant....hope it helps!
