According to the rest of the world, there were so many things wrong with the scenario: they were both males, one was a prince and the other his bodyguard, and only the bodyguard was in love. The kingdom of Fraterun was not powerful and rich nor was it weak and poor. It was on the lower middle ground, barely sustaining itself and yet also able to defend its land against invaders who underestimated its armies. The royal family, wishing to expand their rule and build up their kingdom, had multiple children for the purpose of marrying them off to other kingdoms and create alliances so, when wars come, they might overcome their enemies and partake in the spoils. However, their youngest was born sickly and undesirable, and so his existence was, at best, negligible. The parents had at least enough heart to give him a companion.
At a young age, Garrat had been sold to the royal family to become the playmate of the sickly youngest prince. They became like brothers then, and Garrat worked hard to become strong so he could guard the prince against the world, but his strength and capability were not the only things he gained over time. Realizing that he had fallen for his prince, he resolved to hide his feelings, but could only do so by distancing himself from him, for he was a terrible liar at the worst of times, particularly when his feelings were involved. Quite a few years had passed and Garrat and his prince spoke no more than a few sentences a day on average. Sometimes, they didn't speak at all.
The prince, on the other hand, longed for the relationship he and Garrat had in childhood and was determined to find out why his bodyguard became cold to him one day. Oh, they still talked on occasion and it was undeniable that Garrat still cared for him in one way or another, but why was he so far away in more ways than one? And why did it hurt so much?Law of the Land ♣ Please be active ♣ ♣ No text talk, since the decoding is annoying ♣ ♣ PG-13 stuff only ♣ ♣ Minimize swearing ♣ ♣ No god-moding... on purpose that is ♣ ♣ If you're interested, please PM a profile ♣ Skeleton Key Kingdom Flag: (username) Please sign here: (Name) I'm this old: (18) In a relationship, I'd be: Uke I'd say: (Personality and History) Vision:

Residents Kingdom Flag: BrokenScreamBox Please sign here: Garrat I'm this old: 21 In a relationship, I'd be: seme I'd say: Garrat does not remember much of his childhood before becoming the prince's playmate. His memories fully consist of being by his friend's side. Unsure of whether or not his prince would ever recover from his sickness and in fear that one of the siblings might become so ambitious that he or she would try to kill all other heirs to the throne, Garrat decided to train to be a knight. At first, it had been self-teaching, but he sought professional training among the squires. At first, he still had the time to spend with the prince, but they gradually grew distant for the following reason.
When at the age when women became interesting, Garrat found that he had feelings for his prince. Considering their difference in class and that they were both males, he tried to hide them, but he was a terrible liar. When his feelings got in the way of training, he could only think to distance himself from the prince to focus on becoming a strong bodyguard and to hopefully grow out of the feelings. To prevent an accidental slip of the tongue, he limited however much he talked and sometimes even avoided the prince at times, though he never went so far that he wouldn't be there if anything happened. The silence and the distance was torturous. (Personality will develop over time) Vision: Kingdom Flag: TenTenPrincess23 Please sign here: Nathaniel P. Donshire I'm this old: 18 In a relationship, I'd be: Uke I'd say: In a family of six and a palace filled with splendor grand enough to make the common folk gawk in awe, young Nathaniel was seen as the meek little mouse. Humble with all he had but very weak. His mother had given birth to three children before himself, two boys and one daughter, all of them were healthy and gorgeous little princes and princess. But for some reason, her overconfidence of having three children left her cocky to her fourth and final baby. So, she continued to lavish herself in luxuries and drank happily like any queen would, but without expecting it, Nathan was born one month too early. Unlike his brothers and sister, he didn't have a very princely look about him, His brothers and sisters had blonde hair and blue eyes, but he was born with dark brown eyes and black hair, taking more after his mother.
Being premature born, he of course had many ailments to follow. His immune system wasn't up-to-par so he wasn't sick with one disease. He'd usually catch a fever or a flu-bug and soon get better would quickly fall ill again from something else. The queen noticed this trait and couldn't help but blame herself. She'd pamper and spoil all her children but would always have special restrictions on him. For example, while his siblings all played outside, he'd have to stay inside and take lessons from the scholar or be bed ridden. Then, when his brothers and sister made friends from parties and social gatherings, he would ask his mother why he didn't have any friends. (Thus where young Garratt would come in)
But as he grew up, he learned to accept the way he was and try to enjoy the life he was given. He always tries to be optimistic and kind to those around him. He does get into some mischief from time to time, but only because as a child, he was shut off from the outside world. So when he was old enough to go outside, he cherished the sun and the rain and everything! He was always at his happiest around his best friend Garratt. He was always so inquisitive and curious about a lot of things, but because he'd get sick so easily, he would never be able to experience them himself. Still, he'd stay content and happy as long as his friend was around. Vision:

The sky is clear today, Garrat observed as he stared out the window of Prince Nathaniel's room. Sometimes, he wished he could go outside to see the sky in its entirety, but his occupation as a bodyguard required for him to stay near the prince at all times. Not that he really minded. They were the best of friends after all.
Well, Garrat wasn't sure about that, at this point. He hadn't properly talked to Nathaniel for years now. It wasn't that they had a falling out or anything of the sort. To anyone else, it would seem that Garrat just suddenly stopped talking for reasons unknown. The truth of the matter, only known to the bodyguard, was that he had a deadly secret.
For some odd reason, Garrat had one day found himself to have... sinful feelings for Nathaniel. He did not know how or why it was so, but he only knew he couldn't let anyone know about it. Garrat had realized his feelings shortly before he stopped talking to Nathaniel. For a while, he hoped the feelings would die out, but they had only seemed to grow stronger. They led him to try to distance himself from the prince, but to no avail. Why did his silence continue, then? Well, having known that he was a terrible liar, he decided that, if he couldn't dispel his feelings, he would have to keep them hidden forever, and the only way he could do so was to speak less.
Of course, his choices weren't without consequences of their own, but he certainly would have preferred this over death.

The young prince was down with another cold again. He had felt ill for about three days and each day of rest allowed him to feel slightly better bit by bit. He would rest in bed with Garrat by his side. As the sun shown brightly through the window, Nathaniel's eyes fluttered from the morning's bright rays. Taking in a grand breath and exhaling as he began waking up, he opened his eyes and then rubbed them to shield them from the bright light. He stretched and groaned some as he emerged from under the covers. Adjusting to the morning rays, there was Garrat, standing by the window as if his presence was protecting the young prince from the sun's harsh morning wake up call. He grinned and slowly sat up from his resting position.
"Good morning, Garrat..." he muttered with his usual fragile smile. He knew that if he didn't start up some sort of conversation soon, then Garrat would only state his morning greetings and that would be the end of it. Looking out the tall window, Nathan could see the magnificent blue sky behind him and it made his heart feel warm and full. He began to pull out of the covers, "I-I'm feeling much better today, Garrat. Can we go outside?" he asked with hopeful eyes. His mother would probably frown upon it but as long as Garrat was with him he'd be fine... usually.
Nathaniel was a bit wobbly as he tried to stand up but grabbed his bed post to balance himself. He was still a bit shaky but not as terrible has he was for the past few days. "See?Maybe... if it's not too cold, we can take the horses out! Just for a little while" he nodded, hoping his little act would be enough to his guard's approval. This is how Nathan would always be. A little body full of optimism and hope, even if their conversations were a little one sided.

Upon hearing the prince wake, Garrat turned his attention away from the window and towards his sickly friend. "Good morning, your highness," he greeted in his usual formal tone. This was part of their small daily dialogue. The next words spoken would usually be wishing each other good night.
Despite Nathaniel's request, Garrat shook his head. "My apologies, but your mother gave me strict instructions to keep you here until you recover," he explained, gently helping Nathaniel back to the bed. The act wasn't getting to him. He knew the prince had a hard time standing on his own. How could he think to go outside in his condition?

The Prince gave another pout like his always did whenever Garrat said no. "But I feel fine today. Much better than yesterday, anyway... " he tried to bargain as Garrat put him back in bed. "We could just go to the village, just for a little while. Mother wouldn't even notice us gone.." he begged. Seeing as his hopeful pleads weren't necessarily getting anywhere fast, he relaxed back in his bed.
"Won't you at least go outside for me? Just to tell me if its warm or not?" muttered the prince. In truth, he was actually wanting his friend to go outside and enjoy the sun, instead of having him to be cooped up inside with him. It wasn't fair for him. "The rest of the royal family will probably go swimming in the lake if its warm. " Nathaniel sighed as he eyed outside the window.
The lake of Fraterun was veil of beauty in itself. It's green willow trees swept the edges of the lake. The sun sparkled its surface every sunrise and sunset and revealed the lake's crystal clarity. A family of swans lived at the lake along a vast variety of creatures that thrived in that ecosystem. The best part about it was that a beautiful view of this lake was perfectly placed just outside the sick prince's window. It was wonderful to look at... but what good is looking at the real thing if you can never touch it. Then again, Nathan can't exactly swim, so it's better that Garrat is with him to watch over him
He looked at Garrat for only a moment and wondered if he'd say anything different or start anything today, but then came a loud knock at the door. "Young master, Tis time fer ye medicine, it is!" called a woman. "Oh no!" Nathan flopped on the bed and recoiled to the safe haven underneath his sheets and blankets! His Nanny would come in and do this every morning when he's sick. "I feel fine today Nana, I really don't need it!" He called, hiding under the covers as she puttered in. Really it was always entertaining to watch the boy avoid his medicine.

Garrat once again shook his head when Nathaniel suggested that he himself go outside. The world outside tempted him and he knew it would be better than to stay in the room all day, but the prince's health was much more important. He didn't believe Nathaniel wanted to see whether or not it was warm, anyway. Briefly opening the window to feel the air would show enough indication, Garrat knew.
He had to suppress a chuckle at the prince's attempts to hide from the evil known as medicine. To assist the nanny, Garrat began to pull at the covers. "If you are feeling so well today, then you should take this medicine so you can completely recover tomorrow," he pointed out amidst the tug-o'-war. Of course, he couldn't blame Nathaniel for trying to avoid the medicine. The stuff tasted beastly and wouldn't leave the tongue for weeks on end.

The Nanny couldn't help but laugh. It always like this! The young master would never willingly drink for her. Garrat would have to always convince the boy to take it, one way or another. Lady Nana rolled her eyes and gave her burley Scottish grin as she came closer with her tray. "He's right, jya know? Young master, if ye are feelin' a bit better, best take the medicine one more day just to be careful. " she beckoned, setting the silver tray down.
Nathan was struggling to with hold his hiding place as his knight pulled at the covers! "Agh!" He cried as his head poked through the tossed about blankets. His dark eyes scanned the dish and his pouting face returned. He covered his mouth with his blankets before losing the blanket entirely. The nanny was rather grateful to Garrat when the young lord grew ill. He always managed to make things a little easier.
The prince glanced between the two of them as the woman handed him a glass cup with a brownish/greenish sludge inside of it. Since in their time period, medicine wasn't quite understood yet, there were only a few remedies available to be taken. So, if a normal person were to grow ill with a simple cold, they'd take some Horehound Cough syrup. But because Nathaniel was always sick, the concoction was more than just mint and honey. It was a mixture of fish oil, lavenders, horehound mint, black tea, wormwood, ginger, tomatoes, kale, and dash of honey. Pretty much anything that was good for one to injest was in the homemade remedy. He fiddled with the cup in his hands and he gave the two a very sheepish smile. "Why is it, that I drink this wretched brew nearly ever day of my life, and doing so doesn't get any easier..." He stated into the foreboding thing and sighed. But instead of drinking it right away, he turned to Garrat with another stern pouting face. "If I drink this today, will you promise to take me out to the village tomorrow?" He bargained before his lips went anywhere near the cup."... Please?" He begged. It wasn't much to swallow down but anything that tasted like a dead fish boiled in its own blood and dirt with a pinch of honey, was enough. At least the wormwood and ginger kept his smile healthy.

Garrat didn't answer for a while, pondering a bit. He wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to do so, especially if Nathaniel didn't recover by the next day. Then again, it seemed there was no other way to get him to take the medicine, so the bodyguard nodded. It was hard for him to resist that pleading face anyways. One would think Garrat was used to it by now, but it looks like it would be a while before he would be.
Stepping aside so the nanny could feed Nathaniel the medicine, Garrat returned his attention to the window. He saw the nobles strolling along the castle gardens, carefree and completely unaware of anything else; he saw the guards patrolling the area for sneaky assassins; he even saw the rest of the royal family preparing to leave somewhere. Probably that lake, as the prince had mentioned earlier. Garrat stared for a moment and then turned away for a moment. He felt bad that Nathaniel couldn't join them. If only there was a way to permanently help him...

Nathaniel gave a hopeful smile that quickly faded when he looked back at the cup in front of him. Reluctantly, he put the cup to his lips and drank it quickly. The medicinal goop slipped down his throat easily and rested in the pit of his stomach. His face grimaced at the taste of it, "Ugh... It tastes like bear vomit..." He mumbled after he swallowed it down. Nana took the cup back and began tugging at the boy's night gown making him lie back down. She insisted for him to rest and ensured him that if he slept some more, he'd get better.
When the Nanny left, Garrat and Nathan were alone again. The prince tossed and turned in his bed. "I don't want to rest anymore....Garrat, will you please get me parchment (paper) from the drawer mother's room? I feel like drawing.... Can I draw you again?" He asked cheerfully. Because he spent so much time inside, Nathan's drawing skills were perfectly exceptional.... When he drew landscapes or animals. When it came to drawing people, Nathan would end up drawing something that looked an animal and a landscape combined. But If Nathaniel couldn't go outside, then he may as well entertain himself. "And get yourself something to eat from Cook. You haven't yet, right?" He asked/ commanded. The boy knew how diligent and serious Garrat took his job. But sometimes, he'd forget to take care of himself. Nathaniel felt the need to take it upon himself to remind the knight that even though his job may be important, his number one priority should be himself. But of course, The long haired man probably wouldn't believe such a thing. Of course, the second he saw an opportunity to"escape", 75% of the time Nathan would try something. 0% of the time, however, had he ever been successful because Garrat would always catch him just before he got anywhere.

Garrat was a bit suspicious about the request, remembering that Nathaniel often tried to sneak away while he was gone. If the prince hadn't actually commanded him to get some breakfast, the bodyguard would have stayed. Without any answer, Garrat left the room to get some food for both of them and then some parchment for Nathaniel. A few steps away, he paused and looked back at the door to see if the the young man was trying to sneak out. When nothing happened, the guard continued toward the queen's room.
Normally, it would be forbidden for anyone not of the royal family to enter the queen's room, but Garrat was well-acquainted with her. It was only natural that it would be so, because he was placed in charge of her youngest son. Getting the parchment was easy enough. Getting the food was a little more difficult due to the kitchen being a little crowded. The servants were rushing about, trying to get food to the rest of the royal family and the nobles living in or around the castle grounds. Some silly servants decided to pause and gossip about scandals. One noblewoman was allegedly found in bed with a street urchin, another was caught visiting an orphanage for reasons unknown, even the oldest princess was rumored to have been walking in some shady part of the nearest town. Garrat rolled his eyes as he maneuvered his way out of the kitchen with the breakfast.

At first, Nathan waited patiently for Garrat's return... only because he knew Garrat would be waiting a minute outside to make sure the prince wouldn't make any moves. When he knew Garrat was down the hall and in the kitchen, Nathaniel stood up and quietly made his way down the hall to his brother, Hamish's room. In his room, his older brother had a bright red and blue parrot that didn't necessarily take kindly to strangers... and Nathan. The bird was really only close with three people. The Queen, Hamish and Garrat. All the other members of the family had pets as well.Well, All except Nathaniel. His mother and sister, Manureva both owned cats, which would cause the dark haired prince to break out into hives. The eldest brother, Joseph, owned a friendly golden dog that caused Nathan to sneeze, and then there was Hamish's bird, Flegel; which didn't cause any reaction from Nathan, the bird just didn't like him.
Accidently leaving the door a jar, Nathan strode into the room approached the bird cage. The boy usually wouldn't do this when Hamish or any of the other royal family were around, but since they're outside today, there was no one to stop him. He began talking to the bird as if trying to persuade it for something. He opened the cage door and stuck his hand in, managed to get the parrot to calmly exit it without any struggle. Nathan just wanted to feel its soft feathers. Just as the boy began stroke Flegel with his slender fingers, the bird flapped and made an awful screech. It didn't fly away, but it's wings made a glorious effort to slap its holder furiously. "Ow! Ow!" Then unexpectedly, it kawed once again and latched itself tightly to Nathan's hair, pulled a bit and just stayed there. "Uhm... " the prince pulled a bit, only to have the bird clamp down harder on his hair and make him pull his own hair. "Ow... Let go please.." he mumbled.
Unsure of what to do, Nathan picked up a cracker and offered it to Flegel, the bird would still not let go and climbed onto Nathan's shoulder, its long talons digging into his arms. "Ow... please.." he begged, but grew stiff as he recounted all the times this bird has bitten the young prince. "Look you can't stay there forever.. you'll have to tire eventually..." he talked to the bird as if it was human being. I hope Garrat won't be too cross... he thought to himself since the knight had orders to keep the prince in his room. After a few more minutes, he continued attempting to get the parrot out of his hair to no avail.

After some time, Garrat returned to Nathaniel's room only to find it empty. Seeing that there were no signs of a struggle, he concluded that the prince left on his own. The guard rolled his eyes and left the room to begin searching for Nathaniel. He couldn't have gone very far in his condition. The nanny's medicine may have helped give the prince a bit of strength, but surely not enough to evade the bodyguard for a long period of time. Such a thing had never happened before and Garrat was not about to let the first happen today. Partly because the Queen would have his head if he or Nathaniel was caught apart from one another, figuratively speaking.
A parrot's screech was the dead giveaway and Garrat made his way to Hamish's room. It seemed like Nathaniel wanted to see Flegel, that reclusive bird that for some reason couldn't stand him. For an even odder reason, Flegel at least tolerated Garrat, though he could not imagine why. It made his life a bit easier, though. He was glad to not have to deal with squawks of hatred that strangers (and Nathaniel) had to deal with.
Upon reaching Hamish's room, Garrat's suspicions about Nathaniel's whereabouts were confirmed from the door being slightly open, the angry squawks beyond it, and the prince's pained mumbles. Immediately, the guard entered the room and proceeded to help Nathaniel get Flegel off him. "Now, now, that is no way to treat your master's brother," he gently scolded. He gave the young prince a slight glare before continuing to untangle the parrot's claws out of his hair

With the sound of foot steps behind him, Nathaniel flinched and his neck sunk into his shoulders as Garrat appeared by his side with that glare. Oh, that scowl was the worst. It reminded the boy of all the times Garrat works hard to watch over the young prince and it made him feel bad. However, nothing severe usually ever happens, so the boys would always play it off with a sheepish grin of catching the guilty, much like how he is doing now. " I thought I could tame him today... " he broke out with that as his excuse. "And If I could, I wanted to draw him and give the drawing to you or Hamish.." he sputtered out as the bird easily released the sickly prince from its pinchy clutches.
" Thank you.." he grinned as he was saved by Garrat but grew quiet again as his bodyguard probably wasn't thrilled to see Nathaniel out of his room. Nathan rubbed his sore head and made sure no blood was protruding out. When it was clear, he hesitated to talk again, but unable to withstand the silence, broke it. "... I was only going to come here pick up Flegel." he started with his excuses again, " And see, I made it here okay. So therefore I must be getting better. I only needed to use the wall once and I hardly feel light headed, I feel fine!" he insisted walking slowly back to his room.
Back in his room, young Nathaniel used Garrat as support for just a moment. But he didn't let go as he glanced up at him, "Garrat... are you mad?" he asked nervously. He wondered sometimes, if the knight "known as Garrat" was always angry and he never said anything to his friend in order to not hurt his feelings. But the boy would never truly understand any of the training his best friend had to go through. He wished Garrat would talk more.. perhaps confess what bothers him or how he feels somedays. But Nathaniel wondered how much more time must pass in order for Garrat and Nathan to achieve their old friendships like they used to have...

After he placed Flegel back in his cage, Garrat walked Nathaniel back to his room. After returning there, he was rather surprised when the prince asked if he was mad. He usually didn't ask such things. What changed today? More immediately, was Garrat mad? Perhaps not, but he was annoyed. He had hoped he wouldn't need to look for Nathaniel. The prince should have known better than to walk off like that. He also should have known to leave Flegel alone.
Before he could wander into the deep recesses of his mind, Garrat shook his head after some thought. There was no need for words with this question.
Garrat noticed the forlorn look on Nathaniel's face and wished he could say something so the prince would feel better. It had been so long since he gave the younger man some encouraging words. Would the words give too much away? Would something slip out? Garrat wondered how much longer he can keep his relative silence. He guessed it can't be for much longer.
Before he knew it, he felt a tuft of hair under his hand. After a second, Garrat found that he had been patting Nathaniel's head. He recoiled his hand immediately, but the damage was already done. He must have seemed strange. What kind of bodyguard would pat a prince's head? Even if they had a friendship in the past, there was no excuse for Garrat's action.
