Okay, so International Transgender Day of Remembrance is (or was) Friday the 20th of November. Why's this important to us, and why should you start reading this? On a general level, it is significant because we should speak out against all sorts of oppression: racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic etc. So why are our transgender friends oppressed? There are a variety of different reasons. Their gender identity may not match the biological sex of the body they were born into. They may feel as though the sex of their body is incorrect (distinct from the earlier reason, because they may feel feminine, masculine or androgynous). Whatever the reason, they are seen as sexual deviants and people who are subverting the sex/gender dichotomy and the 'traditional' roles that these entail... roles that are essential to the monogamous bourgeois family and its perpetuation of private property. (Have a look at the last paragraph in that link if it's tl;dr.) Now some stuff to make you angry (I hope): Jos of Feministing This year the TGEU Trans Murder Monitoring project TDOR 2009 update has collected information about over 160 people killed because of other people's violent reaction to their trans presentation or identity. These numbers represent only those people we know about. We don't know how many trans folks were actually murdered this year - our identities are so rarely recognized and there is still so little awareness about trans issues and the violence trans folks face that it is safe to say many murders of trans folks went unreported. (I recommend you read the rest too.) You'll notice that the Feministing article also points out that most of the victims have had feminine gender presentation and were Black or Latino, illustrating the overlapping forms of oppression and prejudice that contribute to these hate crimes. It is not only violence from other people that trans or LGBTI folk in general are likely to be subject to. Another article from Feministing today says: Jos of Feministing The number of trans folks who have attempted suicide ranges from about 30 percent to over 50 percent in studies. One study found that 83 percent of trans folks have considered suicide. and Quote: LGBT youth are up to four times more likely to commit suicide than their straight peers, and that number balloons to nine times more likely if they are rejected by their family. Other stuff: Here is a list of trans people to remember this year. And here is a wikipedia link to a 2001 film about a transexual man who died of ovarian cancer after doctors refused to treat him. Even if the day's over for you already, please take some time to think about our trans sisters and brothers and the oppression they face in this society.... and of course, discuss it right here in this thread, along with any opinions you have on how it relates to socialism and communism.

It is truly unfortunate. I really hate hearing s**t about people like our comrades mentioned above getting beaten to death because of this s**t. Its the same with the homosexual community at well. What bothers me further is that the CP's aren't reaching out to these people as much as they should be either!
It is my sincere hope that they all soon unite under the banner of labour.

Comrade Rob It is truly unfortunate. I really hate hearing s**t about people like our comrades mentioned above getting beaten to death because of this s**t. Its the same with the homosexual community at well. What bothers me further is that the CP's aren't reaching out to these people as much as they should be either! It is my sincere hope that they all soon unite under the banner of labour. You mean the same (Stalinist and Maoist) Communist Parties which declare the family to be the 'fighting unit of socialism'? Really? What is needed is a party that can serve as the tribune of the people. The only group which currently does this is the Spartacist League, but it is hampered by the current dearth of membership.

I guess the solution to all of this is to be louder about how socialism relates to LGBTI and to bring those ideas to Queer public forums and such.
I'm still working a lot of it out in my head, really. :0 I hope to have a more coherent view on it in the near future that I can personally bring to such places.

Comrade Kotka I guess the solution to all of this is to be louder about how socialism relates to LGBTI and to bring those ideas to Queer public forums and such. I'm still working a lot of it out in my head, really. :0 I hope to have a more coherent view on it in the near future that I can personally bring to such places. This sort of thing is tough, when you speak out about it, the capitalists just see us as silly faggots and sexual deviants, they don't realize that we hurt and bleed and hope and dream just like they do. *gets emotional* I'm so fed up with reports of "how homosexuals and transgenders kill themselves out of shame" keep getting posted, it's not out of shame but out of fear... Is it better to die by your own hand, safe, secure, and the way you want, instead of possibly by your neighbor who always glares at you with evil eyes... It is my firm hope that the country seriously takes a look at itself, the reverse racism, the religious extremists, the overall disregard for "minorities" which I don't even get seeing how America is a melting pot and thus no single faction can possibly BE the majority, other than capitalist, of course.

For them, the issue is not that gay people are people, but that gay people break sexual norms, and thus are a danger to the capitalist family which is used among capitalists to ensure an heir for the capitalist (hence why 'studs' are cheered for and 'sluts' denigrated) and is pushed among the working class as a means of control, regimentation and to help create 'respect for authority.' It is only through the overthrow of the entire capitalist system that true sexual equality will be possible.

The popular thing in my black dominated high school was to ******** with white kids, go figure, that's racism. Anywho, how do they ******** with white kids? You're stiing there, doing your school work, and then the girl behind you shoves you and says "what the ******** did you call me" ... uh oh... do they believe the white kid who said nothing and is panicking out of fear of being called a racist, or do they suspect the b***h who does this to every white kid in the classes she's in? They know it's her, but they play the game. "They" is not "black people" but the "classroom society" ... everyone assumes it's true because we as white people must be especially apologetic. Granted, in my time in the military, reverse racism, the race card, and all regard for propriety is thrown out the window, it's the first time I felt truly equal among my worker class peers. But the reality is, using the race card in reverse racism ways, does happen. I understand it may not happen in Australia, but it does happen in very populated urban areas in the south and in the north US. Racism, as a hole, is a shameful hidden beast among the general populace, but reverse racism has been rearing it's head quite frequently. It's not just my ramblings, it has even appeared on the news, not that I'd consider that a credible source of it's accuracy, but definitely a source pointing towards it's existance. About the not caring... *sighs* yes, you are very right. They simply do not care. We are expendable.

Cause ill definitely disagree that Pol Pot the MAOIST was not pro Family Unit at all. Kim il Sung's North Korea used the Family unit as a honor system such as found in many other Asian cultures but I will also suggest that there education system greatly limits the family structure in our western sense and even theirs. You can also be a Stalinist and be anti family unit. Im an avid anti Family unit and its funny how its seems that only the Chinese cultural Revolution and Nk/Khmer were the only ones to really tackle the family unit. How does the Spartacist league go about destroying the family unit? Does it use extreme individualism or collectivism and by what means does it destroy it? Pol Pot killed fathers and Mothers and told the children to blame the Americans. North Korea had huge numbers of orphans post Korean War hence Fatherly Leader image Leader which does destroy the traditional family structure to some regard. What does the League propose? or better yet yourself? Because thats what we are basically getting at seeing as you know that most of the Stalinists hear do not defend the Traditional family structure.
