I made a French music mix for my class (I had to do a presentation on the music culture). I put it up on my web page (which is highly under construction, so if you wander, please mind the bugs in the nooks and crannies).

Écoutez Moi (84 MB) Click to the list of songs and the download link.

Because I like to repeat myself... and I wrote this whole thing waaaay back in the day, and never got to post it:

1. Les Gens Se Suivent by Cyrz
None of his other work (that I've heard) sounds like this, but I like this one best.

2. L'Homme Dans L'Ombre by Miss Kitten & The Hacker
She has a few known singles out here in the states. Off the top of my head, I'd say her most famous single is "Frank Sinatra" which featured on the soundtrack to Party Monster.

3. Cybele's Reverie by Stereolab
This is the first French band I discovered about 15 years ago when I was in high school. Their music is timeless, I think.

4. Tais-Toi Mon Coeur by Dionysos
Mathias Malzieu won my heart forever with this song and video. I believe this is the radio edit version, where Olivia Ruiz has a bigger singing part, and it's more rockin' rather than the more acoustic version on the album.

5. Marie Douceur, marie Celere by marie Laforet
You may recognize this song. It's a cover of The Rolling Stones' song "Paint It Black"

6. Aerodynamic by Daft Punk
Though they did have a few good singles in the mid 90s, Daft Punk are probably best known for their big hit and video "One More Time" as well as several other songs that are animated on the video "Interstella 5555".

7. Le Marin by Babet
Everybody loves Babet. At least, according to Dionysos, who she sings with.

8. Une Belle Histoire by Valerie Hohn
There is absolutely no information abound about Valerie Hohn. I suspect she is really one of the many names under the well-known composer of anime, Yoko Kanno. This song comes from Kanno's soundtrack to Kamikaze Girls, which is the only place you'll find this song.

9. Giant Jack by Dionysos
Dionysos sings a great number of songs in English. This one is my favourite. Giant Jack is another character created by Mathias Malzieu, and is referenced in other songs. You'll find this on the album called "Monsters in Love" which is based on a novel by the lead singer.

10. Drôle de Creepie by Lisa
This is Lisa's only single. The song is the theme song to the TV show Growing Up Creepie (as aired in France).

11. Cettes Bottes Sont Faites pour Marcher by Eileen
This should be another easily recognizable song. It's a cover of Nancy Sinatra's signature song "These Boots Were Made For Walking".

12. Le Voyage de Penelope by Air
Air is probably best known for their singles "Sexy Boy" and "Playground Love" (which is the theme song for the film "The Virgin Suicides").

13. Wo Qui Non Coin (Short Sad Version) by Yoko Kanno
As I said earlier, Yoko Kanno is a widely known composer of the anime world (responsible for the godsend soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop! where this song is from). The longer version of this song starts with Japanese lyrics that say the same as the French part says.

14. Si Tu N'étais pas Là by Fréhel
Of course, I had to add something from the Amelie soundtrack! This is my favourite style of music, so it had to be this one smile

15. Cadavre Exquis by Sir Alice
I will warn you now, Sir Alice is most certainly an acquired taste of experimental music. This song is about as "normal" as her music gets. I discovered her thanks to my boyfriend, who found her CD in the 'discard' bin at the radio station he works at.

16. La Femme Chocolat by Olivia Ruiz
Olivia Ruiz is the partner of Mathias Malzieu, and also a member of Dionysos. She got her start as a contestant on France's version of one of those talent shows. This song is about eating too much chocolate (I think... if the video is anything to go by).

17. Hola hola by Dany Vasnier
Here is another production by Yoko Kanno. This song is only found on the Kamikaze Girls soundtrack.

18. Tes Lacets Sont Des Fees by Dionysos
This is another song from the album Monsters In Love. The video features a less-kind Giant Jack, who is driven by love and jealousy. (also, I am trying to learn this song on the uke)

19. Je Sais Comment by Dreamland Faces
This band are dear friends of mine. Karen and Andy both play the accordion and sing, and Andy plays the musical saw, too. They are known around my hometown to back up silent films with their live music.

20. A Quai by Yann Tiersen
And another song from the Amelie soundtrack. There were so many amazing pieces of his from this soundtrack, and I had to include at least one more.

I tried to make it as diverse as I could, but it also stayed pretty well in my taste range.
