Serenity On The Seas

Hey guys it's Serenity! Now I haven't really ever seen a thread opened with this type of topic, so I figured I would make one and see where it goes...

Now ever since I was little I have always believed in beings of other worlds, dimensions, or whatever or where ever they might be. Though lately I have been doubting the world of higher powers and Magick itself; for some personal, factional and external issues and dilemmas. I have searched kept my eyes open and believed as hard as I could, and never have I seen anything to convince me. It still fascinates me today and I still believe to a certain extent. Because of many books I have read it has become a secret wish of mine to find Faerie of the faeries to prove to myself that they're real in one form or another. I also have read to many fantasy books that take place in England and Ireland so now it is a life long dream to get to those countries someday and continue my search there. But enough about my personal goals and dreams back to the subject at hand.

As some of you and myself know faeries aren't-or from what I've read and researched-aren't these little glittered up pixie-like, sparkly winged darling things. The world of Faerie is supposedly a treacherous place; the land of dreams and nightmares, where both can come true in the same wish. They can live among us if they wish and can also only be seen if they wish using a glamour. This is usually where Faerie sight would come in. When faeries do not want to be seen they will put up a glamour, or rather a disguise to make them seem human. They would usually appear as a beautiful mortal and real mortals would often be attracted to them without knowing why. Faerie sight is obviously the ability to see Faeries when they do not have a glamour on or when they are supposedly 'invisible'. When they are in their true form most will still be very attractive, but many also will look terrifying and scary in the truest sense of the word; with all of them though a sense of fear and spine shivering feelings will accompany you. Now not that many mortals are said to have Faerie sight, but for those who do have to be careful because if you have ever read Tithe, Valiant, Wicked Lovely or Ink Exchange, you do not want them to find out that you can see them. According to those books (which are fictional not fact, but are very accurate and well put together with real myth and legend) if they can see you they will blind you so that you can no longer see them; they like to keep their world secret and untainted. They are tricky devils and not always how they seem. They cheat, lie and connive do get what they want or to play treacherous games that can destroy peoples lives or just the person. They kidnap young, smart, beautiful, girls for their kings to marry. And in time those girls become more like the faeries themselves until they are no more than a simple skin pigmentation short of being a faerie. They are spirited away body and soul into another world entirely that supposedly sits right under out noses.

Now another book series-again fiction but entwined with real folklore and legend-suggests that faeries find teenage mortals, because they are more agile and obviously more likely to buy into a chance at their dreams, to do their bidding and dirty work. If it's anything from solving disputes between fey territories to rescuing a fey to something like battling and killing something that threatens faerie. The book series I am talking about is the Chronicles of Faerie by O.R Melling which, in my opinion, is a very well written series that entwine modern day with the twists and turns of ancient strife that continue in faerie. Faeries are seen as beautiful, but deadly looking other worldly beings that will and can kill without batting an eyelash and time means nothing to them for they never die (dah). Their world is the land of dreams where anything can happen, and for all intents and purposes, will happen. Our world is what fuels faerie; the dreams of mortals keep faerie alive. As long as their is a human that believes in faerie and the faeries it will continue to be and thrive. They lived to dance, drink, eat and party. Their music was irresistible, their food delectable but treacherous. If you ate their food you would be theirs, no longer able to stay in one world for long. You would be forever on the fringe of both worlds, constantly switching between the two. The fey would be free to call on you when ever they wished and you would belong to them. They loved to play pranks on humans. To trip you, pull on your hair, bump into you, and sometimes they were known to play with human emotions and love. They could make certain events happen and determine your luck. They would sail through and play with time like it was a childs toy. They could also put animals under their influence easily and have them turn tame or wild, but that was not permanent.

Over all it's a treacherous world full of myth, wonder, mystery, and danger. They could do upon you what you could only ever dream about, and they would and could turn those very dreams into nightmares; twist the plot turn the story around and make it their own creation. They can be ruthless and fearful, deadly and unfeeling. If you have a question for me that you can't post on here, either for personal embarrassment issues or the context of the question please don't hesitate to PM it to me and I will answer it the best I can. If not then just address the fact that the question is for me-or another person-before you type the question.

This thread is for a free flowing discussion of Faerie and the fey. Ask questions post answers and freely discuss topics pertaining to the thread. It's here for everyone of course and don't be afraid to talk in here. General guild rules apply obviously and thanks for reading!

Wow, you seemed to hit the nail of the head about what faeries are really like. One thing that I'd like to bring up is something that I've become interested in only just recently. Faery faith, which I think it related to Faery Wicca.

I'm not quite sure on a lot of things about it, so forgive me if I may make a few mistakes with this. I'm not sure where it started, but it is related to the traditions of Ireland. But supposely people would go off to to learn healing from the faeries, and be replaced with a changeling. A famous example would be Bridget Cleary. Because of what happened to her, an interesting Irish nursery came from it.

Are you a witch?
Are you a faery?
Are you the wife of Michael Cleary?

Well I can truthfully say that I have never really heard of Faerie Wicca. That or I have never heard of it with that name, if there is an alternative name for it. Do tell me though, what exactly happened to this Bridget Cleary? I have heard of her name before but am not knowledgeable as to what her story is. People going off with the faeries or faeries taking off with them is no new news to the world, and many may come back with gifts given to them by the lands of Faerie; unintentionally of course, unless they go there solely for the purpose of wanting to obtain a gift. Only those not seeking faerie gifts can obtain them. But people going to learn from the faeries, is not that common I wouldn't think. Most who know about the faeries wouldn't want to really cabits with them.

That is interesting though. Thanks for replying!

You're welcome. This is actually one of the few subjects I'm really good at.

Off the top of my head, this is what I remember about Bridget. She had fallen ill, and her husband Michael believed that she was really a changeling. Before she got sick, she had gone off to a faery fort, and didn't show up for a while. Because Michael believed this, he tried to get rid of the changeling. One legend is that if you treat a changeling horribly, the fey will take it back and return the human. So urine was actually thrown onto Bridget(collected from the whole village), and she was burned in a fire. She didn't die until much later, and her husband was charged with manslaughter. Before that happened, she told someone to get the police, for she feared for her life, but the people never listened to her.

That is one way the story is told, I've read others but I remember this one the best. Actually, she wasn't well liked, because she was independent. She kept chickens and sold the eggs and had her own Singer sewing machine, meaning she had her own independent income. Also, she never gave birth to any children, and she had the so-called trait of Pagan women by looking men in the eye while speaking with them.

Basically, her husband honestly believed her to be a changeling, the villagers just helped because they suspected her of being a witch.

It's actually quite sad to see the crimes committed because of superstition. "OH MY GOD SHE LOOKED HIM IN THE EYE! SHE'S A WITCH AND GONNA KILL US ALL!" and let the burning commence.

*Sigh*

I dunno if it actually falls under this topic, but it deals with "supernatural" creatures so at the moment, there's no better place for it.

Now, my garden (and my grandma's) have many plants in them, and I would swear my grandma's flower garden houses a hundred little faeries. But that's not what i'm asking, just setting bg. There's a small tree in my garden (and a tinier one in my grandma's) that have... well, a dryad. They're utterly adorable... but timid as all hell. The only reason the one in my garden doesn't hide around me is 'cause my dad and I planted that tree specially.

>.> Yes, there's a point... why does a dryad pick one tree and not another? Is it just them being fickle, or what? It can't be health, because this one tree did it's best to die (bad transit) and it took a lot of sweat, tears (and the odd para-world dealing) to keep it alive... any ideas?
PostPosted: Fri Jun 27, 2008 7:56 pm

Wow, that's something. But from what you said, I don't think why the dryad chose that tree has anything to do with being fickle. You said it yourself, you did a lot to try to keep that tree alive, meaning that you must of taken really good care of it. Think about it, if you treat anything or anyone nicely, they will like you and chose you. Well, that's what I think the dryad saw. You take good care of that tree, you'll take good care of the dryad and treat them nicely.

That's just what I think, but maybe I'm wrong.

Wow Nick, you never told me you had a Dryad. o.o I've always personally loved dryads, for as long as I can remember, possibly because of my David Eddings influenced youth. XD

I'm afraid that my experiences with Fey can only be said to be of the female twin-soul of myself. <_< At best, I've had some second-hand experiences with em. @__@

I'm really interested (as I am with most things of this sort) though... Anyone have suggestions for a psi-blind psion?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 28, 2008 6:38 am

Ja. we have two, actually... but they're both hiding from me at the moment... or it's more likely 'cause it's winter at the moment. Actually... now that I think about it, my whole damn hometown has various elementals all over the place.

Suggestions? Well, all I can suggest is practice psi-sight. How you've been netwalking and so on without being able to see, I'm not sure. You must have some ability to see - even if it's just interpretation - or else you'd have gotten lost and tumbled out of a computer in China instead of a couple hours away.

I guess what I can suggest - in the case of dryads, at least, since they are probably among the more calm of the various fey and thus a little easier to see - is find a tree. A big, old tree. One that looks like kids would love to play in it; hell, if you know of a tree that kids utterly love then go with it.

Sit under it for a while, and try and feel the energies of the tree. Not necessarily see, but sense. We have six of them for a reason... and while sight may be the most dominant (for most people who can see) other senses are just as good. Just keep trying.

If we all lived closer this'd be a whole lot easier... one downside to the internet, hmm?

Thanks Fallen! That's really interesting.. It's very sad what Faerie can cause sometimes, even if it's unintentional. They probably liked Bridget too; strong women are greatly looked upon by the Fey.

Ok Nick, replying to your first comment.
Can you tell me what type of tree it is? That might have something to do with it. Or what's around it maybe? Dryads, are the more civil of the fey; less tricky, and somewhat more trustworthy, but still never trust the fey.
Now the fey take interests in particular people. Young, smart, beautiful girls, strong, fast, headstrong men and boys, clever people, those who believe, nature lovers... People along those lines. The High Court fey love the countryside, and do not particularly warm to the cities and towns; they can't stand to see nature toppled over and pollution. They enjoy natural beauty. The other courts like the notorious Summer Kings Court can stand the city and sometimes wear full-time glamours and partake in the city life. though it is a great belief that the fey are hurt by metals. Now if this is true or not I cannot say. Some books say they cannot touch it at all, some say that certain powerful fey can come in contact with it and lower standing fey cannot; you'd have to see for yourself.
Now it sounds like you are taking good care of your tree so that might be why the dryad is hanging around. Really, it's hard unless you can see for yourself you know?
If you could send a pic maybe that would be great, if not just describe it best you can.

(and how is it winter? what country do you live in? Not trying to sound nosy or anything.)
PostPosted: Sat Jun 28, 2008 9:50 pm

Well, I live in Australia... southern Hemisphere.

Hmm. Well, it's a grevillea/bottlebrush. Just google it... it's the one with red fluffy-ish flowers... that look, well, like a bottlebrush.

The dryad herself is small (or was last time I saw her)she's just under a foot tall.

But, going from what you said, Serenity... I'm more confused than ever. All around my house, nature is slowly being levelled by some insane man who's decided to do the "suburbia clone 'n' stamp" routine to death.
And I'm the only one in my family who even remotely believes in spirits.

I guess perhaps I'm just interesting to them.

Well, it's possible that if you're the only one in your neighborhood that's doing something to Protect nature, she possibly decided that your place was the safest place. XD
