Heh, I got here first again. And I have a very good Internet browser, apparently.

Hope that this is the right story.

~

Legend says that while out canoeing one day, a youth found a brightly colored snake which he adopted as his pet. The boy fed the serpent insects, frogs and small mammals. As the serpent grew, bigger animals were supplied. Over time, it became so large that the boy, now a warrior and skilled hunter, had to request the assistance of the village in obtaining sufficient food. The small, beautiful snake had become a ravenous monster.

The villagers began to fear the serpent when food supplies dwindled, and they planned to escape to a new fortified village on a hill to the north. The monster serpent appeared, coiled its great body around the village and swallowed all but two children, a brother and sister who did not follow the villagers in their attempt to escape.

In a dream, a spirit instructed the boy to kill the snake by shooting an arrow in a scale behind its eye. The boy’s shot was successful, but death did not come immediately. The serpent’s mammoth body writhed and twisted, its long tail viciously lashed the hillside, smashing trees and bushes until the hillside was swept clean.

Q1. Tell me a legend/myth that includes a card game. (This isn't really a question, but it does test your research skills)

That one's nasty. Took me a while trawling about to find a suitable tale. However...

Morraha and the Slender Red Champion

Morraha chose one morning to go down to the sea, and when he reached it there was but a single boat with a single young man in it. The young man pulled his boat up onto the sand and came ashore and said to Morraha: "Would you join me in a game of cards?" Morraha replied that he had no cards, but when the stranger produced a pack he was unable to refuse and sat down to the game.

The first game Morraha won, and for a prize he asked that the land above him should be filled with stock of sheep in the morning. Then he chose not to play a second game and returned home.

The next day Morraha returned to the beach and the young champion was there again. They played a game of cards, Morraha won, and for a prize he asked that the land above should be filled with cattle in the morning. And he chose not to play a second game.

On the third morning Morraha went again to the sea, and he saw the young man coming. Again they played cards, and again Morraha one, and for a prize he said that he would have a castle and a wife, the finest and fairest in the world; and they were his. And again he chose not to play a second game.

On the fourth day his wife asked him how he had found her. And he told her, then said: "And I am going out to play again today."

And though his new wife tried to dissaude him, saying that if he had won so much he could only lose more, he returned to the beach again. Morraha suggested a game of cards and this time the Champion won, and for his prize he said: "I lay on you bonds of the art of the Druid, not to sleep two nights in one house, nor finish a second meal at the one table, till you bring me the sword of light which belongs to Rough Niall and news of the death of Anshgayliacht."

~

Morraha returned home heavy-hearted, and when he told his wife what had happened she replied:

"Go out in the morning of the morrow, and take the bridle in the window. and shake it; and whatever beast, handsome or ugly, puts its head in it, take that one with you. Do not speak a word to her till she speaks to you ; and take with you three pint bottles of ale and three sixpenny loaves, and do the thing she tells you; and when she runs to my father's land, on a height above the castle, she will shake herself, and the bells will ring, and my father will say, ' Brown Allree is in the land. And if the son of a king or queen is there, bring him to me on your shoulders; but if it is the son of a poor man, let him come no further.' "

In the morning he rose and did as his wife had said, and though the mare which he found was disobedient he did not speak until she had spoken to him. And eventually he gave the mare a bottle of ale and a loaf, and the mare said: "Sit up now riding, and take good heed of yourself: there are three miles of fire I have to clear at a leap."

And the mare did as she said and cleared the fire, and made sure that he was still riding. Then they stopped, and again he gave her the ale and a loaf, and she said that she had to clear a three-mile hill of steel thistles. And again she cleared it and checked that he was still riding. Finally, they stopped and she had the last ale and the last loaf, and cleared three miles of sea in a single bound, and they had reached the land of the King of France.

"Go out," said the King, as it had been foretold; "and if it is the son of a king or queen, carry him in on your shoulders; if it is not, leave him there."

And Morraha looked so like the son of a King that he was taken inside and passed the night with cheer and celebration. Then he told of why he had journeyed here and asked the queen to give him counsel and good luck, and she told him everything he was to do.

"Go now," said she, "and take with you the best mare in the stable, and go to the door of Rough Niall of the Speckled Rock, and knock, and call on him to give you news of the death of Anshgayliacht and the sword of light : and let the horse's back be to the door, and apply the spurs, and away with you."

In the morning he tried to do so, but as he left the door the gates were flung closed and the horse he was riding was cut in half and the saddle torn from under him. However, Niall's wife was there with a bowl of pudding and flesh which she flung at her husband and told him he was a fool, and Morraha escaped.

The same thing happened again on the second day and the third, but then Niall's wife told him to rest for Morraha was gone. And Niall did so, but while he slept Morraha crept in and took hold of the sword. Now the sword, being joined to its master, tried to escape, and when it could not gave a cry that woke Niall. But Morraha threatened to kill Niall if he did not tell the story of the death of Anshgayliacht.

So Niall told him the story, and Morraha escaped with both the news of the death of Anshgayliacht and the sword of light, but at the end of the story Niall revealed that the sword of light had belonged to the King, and that the King was Niall's father and the champion's brother, and asked Morraha:

"And now when you go home, and the Slender Champion asks you for news of the death of Anshgayliacht and for the sword of light, tell him the way in which his brother was killed, and say you have the sword ; and he will ask the sword from you. Say you to him, 'If I promised to bring it to you, I did not promise to bring it for you;' and then throw the sword into the air and it will come back to me."

And so Morraha returned and told the Champion the story, but when the Champion asked for the sword he replied as Niall had asked him to. Then he flung the sword into the air and it returned to his owner, and Morraha swore to his that he would not play at cards against strangers again lest he again be placed under such a duty.

It makes me sad that this thread died. If I think of a question I will ask it to hopefully spark something.

Okay since Gothic Romantic Stopped I'll ask one and hope it's difficult enough.

Q: What is a Falin and where does it live?
PostPosted: Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:12 pm

Falin is a mountain demon from Glen Aven, in Scottland.

My apologies for my hiatus. College gets crazy, and my actual life has been crazier.

I know for a fact you are correct but I really hate to inform you of this. Aria_in_full's character was hacked a while ago and the password was changed on her. She's a pretty good friend of mine and told me that the email the character was made on was no longer working. So if this thread continues she won't be able to respond.
