Riyora continued to stare in bewilderment at the small gathering, but her puzzlement only increased when the self-assured white alpha suddenly turned away. Her eyes were leaking! Ah, well - all wolves cried a bit every now and then. Zev wasn't the first and she certainly wouldn't be the last. Riyora felt uncompelled to sympathize with her, and decided instead to examine her new home. Still completely oblivious to Zev's despair, the Diamond wolf took a step forward, and examined the clearing with a little more satisfaction. The self-centered creature that she was! Iarni was no better, but seemed unsettled by Zev's weeping.
"My pack wasn't a dump," Riyora murmured defensively, pompously, but very quietly so that even Kaytar strained to hear her words. "We were a well-bred and strong pack. There was thirty of us at one time..." She looked around, as if approving. "This place should do anyway." Her tone had perked lightly, but she lacked well meaning or modesty. "I'm sure this will... in time... become a home for myself and Iarni!"
The cub stepped forward as Riyora explored, sniffing around, but then Iarni came to a sudden and ill-fated stop. For she had seen Kaytar up above the den entrance, and he was staring at Riyora with such an intensive and unrelenting hatred, the diamond-studded cub paused. The wolf's breathing had quickened slightly, as though the rage that boiled and bubbled within him could hardly be contained. In his eyes and mind, he was killing Riyora.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Bʀᴇᴀᴋs ᴅᴏᴡɴ It might as well had been curtains for Zev's happy reign over the pack. She knew what she would have to face later; a mockery. Zev blamed herself entirely for her great big mistake because when she had first set eyes on Riyora, she had seemed nice enough, but now with a full stomach and her mind refreshed she had become over-confident, repugnant and unpleasant. Truth be told, Zev had hoped that she wouldn't bow down to her like she was God but she didn't want to be made a fool and with that now been, gone and done, Zev almost regretted letting her live and the same went for the little b***h she hadn't dealt with a long while back. Did that make her a coward? Did this mean that Zev now shied away from punishing others for their wrong-doings? This made her feel like a right dimwit.
After what seemed like hours but actually wasn't, Zev had thought up a plan of action. She would keep out of the way of both dunce-creating Riyora and the little runt and go search for survivors. Zev felt the need for a sense of closure on the matter of the missing wolves and so if she found corspes then that would be it. Simple as. When should I go though? Tomorrow... No, now! I will go now! I've had my brief nap and this torment needs to end; the sooner the better. It's none of their business anyway. Ugh, I daren't think about them... They take my hospitality for granted and treat both myself and what remains of this place like crap. How dare they! Besides, I can easily take on anything twice my size, plus I'll have the darkness for cover.
With that and courage suddenly completely restored Zev marched back out again and from the first second she was out she was giving instructions. "Kaytar; watch the boy," she didn't even look at him "you," she mumbled at Faolán, "stay put," Zev continued walking until she brushed past Riyora without looking back at any of them and growled: "bitches; stay the hell outta my way." Without hesitation Zev sprinted out into the plains and then beyond into the forest. She was on her way to put her mind at ease but what she didn't know was that her first encounter would be closer than what she thought, and they didn't even belong to the pack... ... all because I still remember your name... OOC: More puppetering to come. I'm going to find the quitters' wolves.

"As you wish," Kaytar mumbled quietly, half to himself, as his alpha bounded away. Something was troubling her, something truly unbearable, if she had been resorted to crying - and in front of a stranger, too! Kaytar felt deeply unsettled. No doubt the foundations of the pack would be rocked, however slightly, from the strain imposed upon their leader.
He was disgusted further as Riyora whipped around, offended hurt in her eyes. "What did she call me?" she whispered after Zev had bounded into the brush. Really, even now Riyora could understand the wolf's impatientce - she had said spoken out in a slightly rude way, but the she-wolf saw no reason for name-calling. She hoped Iarni didn't hear the remark. The cub hadn't.
"What's up with your leader?" Riyora called to Kaytar, cocking her head quizzically to one side. "She seems really distracted. Y'know, I'm just saying, but she shouldn't be so careless, leaving her cub all alone-"
Kaytar had had enough. He bounded down and burst closer to Riyora, fur on end and stiff-legged. "Shut up," he exclaimed viciously, but with the quiet cold of a winter morning. "If you know what's best for you, shut up, you ignorant bitsh. You know nothing about Zev's problems at the moment. Shut up, and don't harry her any further, or I swear to god I'll kill you right here. I don't care about your history or your precious Diamond Mountain."

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Bʀᴇᴀᴋs ᴅᴏᴡɴ By now Zev had slowed down and was searching the forest for bodies; dead bodies. She knew that the darkness would hide most of the woodlands' hidden secrets and so actually locating anything would be very difficult. Still, it drove Zev mad and so any sort of sign would be of valuable use to her right now. She came to a sudden halt when she spotted a tail, then a paw, then the body they belonged to. Zev sniffed it closely; it was still fresh, no clear stench rising from it. She didn't know who it was, but it looked female. Zev rolled the body over using on of her paws and saw that this person had its stomach ripped right out and bits of it laying around it quite a horrific sight. When she looked at its head, Zev saw that blood had leaked down from the wolf's mouth and one of its eyes were missing. Its left ear was chewed and the right one wasn't in much of a better state. Only one word could describe what had happened to it. 'Dogs'. And this thing here was yet another lone wolf taken care of. This meant that there were more than what Zev had originally thought. More packs had become victim to the wrath of Man; not only Zev and the Diamond Mountain's packs. This was enough evidence to conclude Zev's thoughts and concerns. Her pack brothers and sisters were either deceased or roaming alone.
On her return to the den and the new pack, Zev kept herself to herself walking in complete silence. For now the only thing Zev could do was to continue plodding onwards into the future, praying that Men would not go there. The paw and arm she had used to turn the body over earlier was dripping with cold blood, blood Zev couldn't bring herself to lick off. It was quite a contrast, the left pure white and the right a deep crimson. ... all because I still remember your name...

Riyora was incredulous. "How dare you!" she replied, appalled. "How dare you call me that... And scorn my family... If my Diamond wolves were here now, we would have torn you apart long ago..."
"If they were all as pathetic as you, I highly doubt they could even take out Faolan and survive," Kaytar scoffed. "Because not only would a cub probably manage to outsmart you stupid Diamond Mountain wolves, but Zev would simply overpower them all, with myself at her side." He let out a contemptuous sigh of air. "You uptight she-wolves are all the same - ready and prepared to meet life with bared teeth, when you know nothing about the little details. You're arrogant, selfish, without thought about the hospitality of the pack who've adopted you. Permission to hunt, permission to intrude on my own kills, a den to rest in... And you ignore it all, thinking constantly and only about your losses rather than your gains. Zev must really be insane if she's letting you stay."
Riyora made a move to attack him, but then, with the faintest rustle, the white she-wolf stepped into the area out of the brush. Kaytar stared in mortified horror at the smearing of red on Zev, and Riyora shied away.
"What did you find?" Kaytar demanded, but lacking the harshness he'd used on Riyora. He abandoned his position facing the Diamond wolf and instead walked alongside Zev. Iarni huddled close to Riyora.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Bʀᴇᴀᴋs ᴅᴏᴡɴ "Another stranger," Zev began whilst keeping her tone low so that it would seem as if she was only addressing Kaytar, "dead though. Alone it was... not very nice to look at. I'm assuming that it was the work of the murderers' rabid dogs. There might have been others who got the same treatment; makes me think that we're the last wolves of the Creek..."
Zev couldn't bring herself to look Kaytar fully in the face whilst she told him the rest of her story; including her theory of them being the remains of the pack that hunted on the terrain of the Creek of Death, and that her suspision of Man intruding had been corrrect. Every now and again she would let her eyes wander over to look at the expression on Riyora's face. Zev couldn't tell if it was hate or fear, which was why they snapped back down at the ground and then went for a second or third look sooner or later. So anyway, Zev's tale-telling went on for several moments until she finished with, "There were no signs of any of our own wolves, so I'm guessing we're all that remains. I just hope that those Men do not come back for a second round." Zev spat at the word 'men' with a spiteful nature and cursed under her breath after the sentence. ... all because I still remember your name...

A cold, clammy claw creeped into Kaytar's ribcage and clutched at his heart and lungs, before spreading its icy flow throughout his body. He exhaled once. Naturally to him, he wouldn't give a damn about one strange wolf dying in his turf. Thanks to Riyora, he'd had well enough of newcomers, and rightly so. But what sent his thoughts swirling and tail curling was the thought that others had suffered the same fate. Kaytar's mother... his father, perhaps... His brothers that had left with his parents. The young wolf struggled, and sat down, but then he felt an urge to stand again. He was fidgety but kept his seat.
"Men..." he said finally, sounding small and confused, after a torrential silence had choked the air between them. "Men are using dogs against us... Zev, did you smell them? Were there any nearby?"
By now, Riyora had taken an interest in their conversation, and was listening with erect ears and suspenseful eyes. Iarni was doing something similar, that premature wisdom returning to her blue eyes. There was a nervous excitement in both wolves too, for the creature that had set the deathly trap for their parents was a nameless white dog. They were eager to know about the threat that was circling, shadow-like and ominous, around Zev's future.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Bʀᴇᴀᴋs ᴅᴏᴡɴ "No, I had no such luck," the white alpha shook her head with slight shame, "the smell of death around these parts is just too strong; it covers over any other scent, like camoflage. Let's just assume the worst, I mean they're probably around here somewhere, so I guess it's best we watch our guard. Same goes for you two since you're listening in," her eyes darted towards Riyora and squinted a little. Zev was a little angered that they had dared to listen in on such a tactical and private discussion, but at the same time she was almost glad. Now that Riyora was aware of the threat Zev could use it to put her in her place if the need arose. After a while Zev went back to looking at Kaytar who surprisingly had sounded slightly fainthearted when he'd mentioned the dogs. Zev gave him an innocent and fretful look that seemed to say: 'We'll defeat them, you'll see. Right now we have to be strong in front of these two.'
Zev then moved away from Kaytar and went to greet Faolán. He seemed happy enough and completely oblivious to the discussion that the other two had listened in on. She plonked her backside carelessly down beside him to which she found him soon snuggling up to her. He was silent for the moment and it looked like he didn't have anything to say for himself. For the time being Zev didn't want Faolán in the know and she thought it best that way because she was unsure whether he would be able to handle the situation or not.

Kaytar couldn't fully decipher the strange expression Zev bore once facing him. But he could recognize a wild kind of hope, the hope a cornered animal may have. Frightened yet defiant in the face of peril. The wolf was grateful for the silence - often words were an exaggeration when trying to convey emotions.
Riyora seemed taken aback by Zev's hard look, and flinched visibly. Her tone was careful, but not wary. "That wolf must have been old or young," she said. "A dog can't kill an adult wolf, they're just not strong enough. A cub, yes - but never a full-grown such as ourselves." She raised her head high, looking up towards the moon. "We shall destroy whoever-"
"Oh, shut up, you pompous dimwit," Kaytar snapped angrily. "If we didn't need every member of the pack to play their part, I'd ask you right now to rush headlong into the wild by yourself and be destroyed by these wolf-killing hounds. We need you, Riyora, and you should know better than to believe the silly fables that wolves are the majestic gods of our world. Stop talking and listen to your alpha!" His gaze, burning down on Riyora's insulted face, was hard and unrelenting.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Bʀᴇᴀᴋs ᴅᴏᴡɴ Zev only just managed to stop herself from laughing as Kaytar gave Riyora a mouthful. That got her good... she thought to herself with some pride. She wasn't in the mood to start an argument but no matter what any of them said, Kaytar was right. They weren't the majestic gods of the world and it didn't matter whether they be cubs or adults all of them could easily be taken down if they were outnumbered. Still, Riyora was on the right track - if a little out of place - when she mentioned taking out their enemies. If they were going to discuss such subjects, Zev decided it best that Faolán should go inside since it wasn't something he should get involved in. She nugged him for a while and as she expected he was a little stuborn, but eventually he went back inside the den.
"Attacking them would be a waste of time, Riyora. We need to see what they do first, and how they do it. We need to find their weak spots and their strong spots. And then..." Zev paused for a moment so that she could think her speech through and get it to a high point, "...how to counter-attack with little or no cost. They must think about it, right? Why is this place called the Creek of Death, hm? How do we wolves survive here? If we can live here then surely we have some strength and intelligence? They're stupid if they think that we're going quietly... "No, we're not going to them. If they want to battle, they're coming to us. If they do, we'll show them how we survived so long here."

Kaytar glanced towards his alpha, impressed by her quiet but determined ambition. It was a different kind of confidence to what Riyora had - this was tactual, cunning, patient, and cautious. To him, she spoke perfect sense, and the young male wolf only felt compelled to contribute to her plans.
"We could bait them closer," he suggested. "Stand on the border, make our presence known? Or stay secretive, the better to ambush or surprise them? If we manage to kill one dog, we should make an example of its corpse - show them what this small pack is capable of."
During Zev' inspirational little speech, sanity and sense had returned to Riyora's wide eyes. However, she became unsettled as Kaytar spoke, and turned to Iarni. "Get in the den," she told the cub, awares that the youngster would find the topic a little disturbing. "This is grown-up talk."
Clearly tired, the cub did not protest, and slugged over to the hole in the ground. After wary sniffing, she slowly stepped inside, until Iarni had been eaten up by the earth. Riyora looked expectantly at the two other wolves.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Zev nodded her head in agreement; to make an example of a corpse would be the perfect way to strike fear into the hearts of all their enemies; including other wolves. "That's brilliant, Kaytar. Perhaps it would also be a good idea if we made our presence known, but far enough away from here. Still, they'd be able to follow our scent back to here so maybe not. This is tough for all of us... They'll sniff us out in the end anyway..." Zev let out a huge sigh; either way the dogs would get to them. "Wait, what about killing the dog first and then making ourselves obvious?" Zev then turned her head around towards the den's entrance to ensure that Faolán wasn't trying any of his tricks and listening in, fortunately he wasn't. Faolán was so small and yet he fancied himself to be a big, brave wolf. Perhaps one day he would be; perhaps he would be able to show his courage and determination during this hell-like situation. Zev grinned to herself and then pondered on her strategy for some time.

As much as it tempted him to listen in on the adults' conversation, the little orange wolf sat bored-looking in the den. It was quite dark inside, but since the moon was shining brightly tonight he was able to see somewhat. There was someone else coming inside... the stranger's little sister. This meant someone else around his age; someone to play around with! The prospect filled Zev's adopted son with glee and made his eyes widen and sparkle. Still, Faolan didn't want to scare the girl and so he stayed away and entertained himself by staring at his shadow on the wall.

kaytar's face was fierce and determined as his alpha spoke, yet it waned as she mentioned the risking of the Den's secrecy. An answer, however, sprung into his mouth almost as soon as he considered his solution. "We can just establish new Dens across the territory," he suggested. "Move Iarni and Faolan elsewhere. Considering you found the invader wolf's corpse so close to here... We should probably move."
Riyora's eyes lit up somewhat, as though thrilled by the idea of contributing to her new pack's success. "We could hide and guard the cubs during the day," she said. "And as soon as night falls, we abandon the Den and set out to hunt the dogs in the dark. Where we will be superior. One of us could guard the cubs every now and then."
Kaytar turned to face her, surprised by her sudden ambition. "And make our attacks scattered," he added. "Never follow a routine. We strike randomly, with no patterns."
* * *
Iarni approached Faolan with some caution, but with some excitement. He was different to the others, she could tell - a little like how she was different, with her diamond in her forehead. She stretched out her neck and sniffed heavily. "What's your name?" she piped, switching her blue eyes from Faolan to the murky dark behind him.

At night I'll hang my head in shame... ~Ẑℯ√ тℌℯ ß@ḓαṧṧ ◎ᾔℯ ~ Zev now understood from what Kaytar had said was that seeking out new dens was the only option available to them right now, and so she agreed to this. As for random attacks, this thrilled Zev to some extent. By doing this it would make their battle against the darkness more like a sporting game... whereby the losers would pay with their lives. "Sounds good to me. We make our first moves tomorrow during the hours of daylight we have. Night-time will be no good to us: yes we could hide more easily but then we need to find somewhere to camp out and be able to trace back to it if we have to. We might not but you never know..." Zev then grunted softly to herself and grinned menacingly. The small but vicious pack's scheme was taking its shape and it gave Zev a little renewed pride. There was still hope for the group and they would cling onto it with all strength they found within themselves.

Faolan turned around quickly to face Iarni and he smiled sweetly at her. He liked to have company; he rarely had it, especially from wolves that were small like him. The girl was looking at the dark behind him and this gave him something to talk about. "Don't worry about that," he teased whilst darting his eyes over his left shoulder as if to look terrified. He giggled uncontrollably to himself and then continued, "there's nothing in here that'll hurt you, not even me. My name's Faolan. What's your name?" Faolan's ears pricked up in unison with curiosity at the other cub who was in his company. She was strange... and since when did wolves have diamonds stuck in their heads? This intrigued Faolan very much, but he did have some ammount of discretion and so didn't bother to ask.

Neither Kaytar nor Riyora had missed the malicious, ferocious baring of the teeth played by Zev. The male wolf himself mimicked her, feeling a thrill. The anticipation that was thrumming like a guitar string between the three of them, connecting this small band of wolves, was tremendous. For the first time in his life, Kaytar would be fighting, and hopefully killing, real dogs. Defending his territory. No longer hunting for a meal. Yet Riyora looked a little doubtful, as if struggling to come to terms that, a day after joining a pack, she would be fighting for its survival... and her life.
"Tomorrow morning, then," Kaytar said. "At the first rising of the sun, when their humans will be sleeping. We would probably spread more chaos while they're all resting. We could send somebody in to lure them out, then lead them into out forest - split them up, confuse them with trails. Then we shall pick them off, one by one... All tree of us!" He looked quite forcefully at Riyora, as if to test whether she was game.
* * *
The little dark cub turned her face to focus on Faolan. "I'm called Iarni," she said, quite reassured by his friendly behaviour. Finally, a welcome she appreciated, unlike Zev's rather hostile introduction on the mountainside! "My sister and I are new here... She's Riyora... We're from a place called Diamond Mountain, hence the stone in my face." She swayed her head about as if to display her unusual ornament. She cautiously padded into the dark, taking high steps. "I wonder what they're talking about back there...?"
