A small island off the coast of Africa, Jahazi is the home of a privately-funded nature reserve. Various animals are shipped here for study from the mainland, the native fauna limited to birds and small reptiles. Most of the animals brought to the island are overflow from zoos, animals made homeless because of deforestation, and problem animals that have been bothering farmers and were taken here to prevent them meeting their end by a man's gun. Other animals were specifically purchased by the company funding the research facility for a certain type of study.

The nature reserve is in fact a site for the testing of experimental drugs, surgery, bio-mechanics, and gene therapy. For this reason, the area is heavily guarded by rangers and restricted from public viewing - although not all the damage the scientists do to their subjects is visible to the eye.
Fascinated by the adaptability of certain species and the effect their various tests have on social behaviour and ability to survive, the researchers often go beyond what might be considered humane for the sake of their own scientific curiosity...
