After Issac Clarke defeated the Hive Mind and escaped Aegis VII, the USG Ishimura crashed into the planet. The colony and planet survived the resulting collapse- barely. After the Ishimura crashed, the Valor followed suit almost immediately- however, thanks to the safety precautions built into the ship, almost everyone survived the crash.
It probably would have been better if they died.
Now, the survivors awake one by one from Cryogenic chambers, to awaken to a horribly twisted world; Necromorphs run rampant through the colony, and any survivors are horribly insane thanks to the effect of the Marker. Still in place, the Marker slowly drains the survivors of their sanity... How long will they survive this nightmare?
