or How I learned to stop worrying and love the Quest

This is where you will find a short background about myself the nature of my quest, as well as other choice tidbits. I've decided to try and obtain for myself a costume for which to dress my avatar up on Halloween. I heard other people discussing what they were going to dress their avatars as, and thought "By Jove, that's a capital idea." So I rushed of to GAVsim to figure out what I'd like my costume to be. And here you have it, my Halloween quest.

News:
11/1: Thanks to the help of the very generous Angy I have now repaid my loan. Quest thread is stagnating/morphing into personal chat thread while I break from questing. When I do a new quest, I will make a new thread.

10/30: I have great news, thanks to a fantastic loan from Anko_Itamu (15k eek ) I have been able to acquire the Family Jewels Onyx in time for Halloween. I will begin wearing the costume as soon as the Trick-or-Treating event begins. Look forward to it! However this means I must repay the loan! (I have given her two ice gauntlets as collatoral (my very first Gaia purchase, thus high sentimental value) and I must get them back! Not to mention preserve my honor.

I am currently holding a contest! Yay, I know, you're all excited and want to know more details *nodnod*. Just keep your pants on a while longer, mkay?

Here's the deal. As advertised, this contest is free to enter, in that it won't cost you any Gaia gold *nod nod*. However I do have some requirements for eligibility. The first requirement involves you solving a math or physics problem and PMing me your response. The second requirement involves you making at least five bumps in my thread. These bumps may be made either before your submission or after, that's up to you. This contest will go on weekly so if you've entered into a previous contest and already bumped you will have to bump again. Sorry sweatdrop , but it helps generate attention.

The contest will end on Sunday the 2th of October. Remember PM your answer and bump five times to be eligible.

Oh yeah, and I suppose you're all wondering about the prize. The prize will be 1k in pure gold 3nodding so it's worth your time and effort.

By popular demand I will explain and give hints towards solving this mysterious problem, as I don't want to scare you all off. It is my hope that you learn something, so bear with me.

The eigenvalue problem is a typical problem in the area known as linear algebra (which spends most of it's time with linear vectorspaces, and transformations between such space, for which matrices are often used). At issue is for a given matrix M, which vectors v and scalars λ 's will solve the equation:
M * v = λ * v ? The vectors v are known as eigenvectors, and the scalars λ are know as eigenvalues.

The route to solving this involves multiplying λ by the identity matrix and subtracting λ * 1 * v from both sides. Assuming matrix M is of the form[code:1]

By Cramer's rule we know that this has nontrivial solutions only if the determinant of the matrix can be shown to vanish (ie be equal to zero).

Calculation of a matrix's determinant:
The determinant of a 2 x 2 matrix A [code:1]

is defined to be det(A) = a * d - b * c . For larger matrices the determinant can be found using a technique known as expansion by minors, in which a row (or column) of the matrix is chosen and each element of that row (or column) is multiplied by (alternating plus and minus signs and) the determinant of the "minor" matrix that results by crossing off the row and column the element resides in an treating only the elements that remain. For example, expanding along the top row of M we see [code:1]

All that remains then is to solve a cubic polynomial in λ. Not that bad, eh?

Isn't Halloween a little far off to start questing for?
You might think that, but as I'm questing for an entire outfit, it's going to be naturally harder to get than if it were just a single item. I want to make absolutely sure I can get there by Halloween, so it that means starting early, so be it.
