A wagon/caravan with no horses in front of it is parked somewhere away from the more crowded center of the marketplace. A girl with a headscarf and long greyish blue hair tied up in a ponytail sits in the front. She is staring into a basin of water in her lap, engrossed with its contents. 5 coloured spheres hover in the air next to her, a "For Sale" sign floating above them. As this caravan/wagon is located in the "pets" section of the marketplace, this arouses your curiousity; the round objects look more like art pieces or house ornaments than what you'd usually consider a pet. What are these, pet rocks? And what makes them stay in the air? On top of that, what's so interesting about a basin full of water?

Storm, a small grimy street urchin, with no more colour than the mud-covered ground around here, creeps closer to the wagon. Her interest isn't in pets, strictly speaking, but in birds, 'for the eggs' she always said when asked why.
She finds the orbs fascinating, having learnt far more about 'the natural order of things' than people ralized, through her close assosciation with theiving and gravity ("how does theiving relate to gravity?" "when you have to take the quick way down from the top floor of the place you're nicking from" wink . With a cautiousness honed from this time, she noses closer, and when she thinks she isn't being watched, she grabs for one

Dangerous Cat

"Are you paying for that?" A question languidly asked, for Atan had not bothered to raise her eyes from the basin of water, just moved a hand to rest on a coiled whip lying beside her. She had dealt with street urchin's before, though she was not looking forward to having to use a weapon. They often yielded messy results.

Storm pulls back her hand and looks down
"They're so pretty miss, I just wanted to get a closer look"
She bites her lip, blushing slightly
"they don't act natural, and they... sounded warm"
It sounds likea lame thing to say, but she speaks truthfully, despite her embarresment
"'asides, I aint got nothing to pay with"

Dangerous Cat

"Sounded?" Atan looked up sharply from the basin. "One spoke to you?"

((Hm. I have no idea where this is going. But Atan is more interested in finding capable owners than the money. 2k is just the reasoning she uses that if someone can afford that, the person is well-off enough to care for an Aeriment properly... however, if an Aeriment choses its own owner through telepathic link she'll let it go.))

((^-^ considering how street-urchinny she is, I'd imagine she'dve been chosen rather than her actually being able to buy one. And I like rping so rpable pets are always fun for me, except when the shop suddenly seems to close down...))
*Storm backs up slightly at the sharp look, she won't meet Atan's eyes*
"I ain't sure miss, I was jus' looking and I heard something really nice an' saw these floating real pretty-like, and needed to get a closer look. I weren't going to hurt them or nuthing"
*her accents becomes more and more slanged as fear takes its grip. The woman is going to call the Watch on her, or worse, take a shop-keepers punishment for theives.*

Dangerous Cat

Atan contined to gaze at the girl, then completely spoiled the effect by cocking her head and blinking.

"Choose one. I might let you have it, on the condition that you look after it well."

The water in the basin showed me this 2 days ago... The Mysterious Lake has strange powers, even if only in a small container of its water.
*Storm hesitates, like a small bird tempted by a morsel of food, but afraid of the humans that surround it. Gingerly she stretches out a hand to ensnare a light blue one, almost immediettely she breaks into a wide grin.
"She's so warm, and so...." *the urchin hesitates, unable to describe the creatures voice* "its so clear, like crystal"
*She cups it to her cheek, eyes closed as she smiles brightly, she looks so pleased*

Dangerous Cat

((I'll leave the event of hatching to you, neh? So I'll just close off now.))

Atan looked slightly skeptical at the egg's choice of guardian, but shrugged it off; Aeriments had thus far proven themselves quite capapble at choosing their human companions.

"Right." She handed over a tightly furled scroll, in which history of Aeriments, a copy of Tekka's letter about the island, and a small leaflet on caring for Water Aeriments were enclosed. "Read that when you have the time, or get someone to help you read it. It contains important information about your Aeriment. Feel free to return for advice if you need it."

((sounds good, thanks Atan ^-^))
Storm mumbles her thanks and beats a hasty retreat into the shadows of the village. She hugs the egg tightly to her chest before secreting it in a pouch, along with the scroll, the leaflet and the the letter, freeing up her hands for the climb to her nest.
She takes the scenic route, gathering pieces of food as she goes, hungrilly munching on things as she runs fleetly through the streets. When she spots her chance she takes to the rooftops, pading lightly away towards her small eyrie neer the edge of town.
Once the girl has reached her nest she sets her bag down in one corner and pulls out the egg. She examines it carefully, rolling it from palm to palm, loving the smooth feel of the shell. Ince again that warm gentle feeling caresses her mind, making her smile lovingly. For a while she sings to it until it seems to be asleep, then she settles it in a ragged on her lap. Once that has been done she pulls her bag over and liberates an apple as well as the literature about her new pet.
"S...so you've... pur...pur...purchased a war-ter Aeriment"
She struggles through the longer words, trying to understand what she's gotten herself into. The part about the child stage worries her, since she doesn't know how big it will be when it finally hatches, and she may not have anything big enough to bathe it in
The next few days drift by slowly, Storm continues her usual routine of theiving and dodging, but now keeps her new egg in her pouch at all times. Sometimes, when its quiet and no one particularly seems out for her blood, she sings to the egg, albeit in a croaky-urchinny way designed to gain maximum amount of money with maximum disinterest and minumum effort.
At night the egg is kept wrapt in a warm but damp cloth and safely tucked beside her pillow. Storm makes sure to keep the basin of water ready for her egglets' hatching, although she puts it to the back of her mind while working.

The hatching begins in the middle of the night, and the kittlings' cries are not enough to stir the tired human from her dreams. The first inkling she has of anything being different is when her mind is hammered with a kind of panicked mental tone. Half awake the theif rolls from her blankets, gets tangled, falls, hits the ground near the egg, and upsets the bath.
After managing to sort out the ensuing chaos she picks up the half cracked egg and gently pulls away pieces of shell until the damp water Aeriment falls onto the ground.
It is far larger than Storm seems to have anticipated, and the water bath she had readied for it (even without the water) was not large enough to hold the almost pillow-sized creature. She begins to panic as she realizes that the hatchling must be kept almost continually in water, but isn't paniced enough not to think of wrapping it in the damp cloth she has been keeping the egg in.
"Hang on blue, I need to get you a bigger bath"
She places the water-absorbent cloth and its occupant in the puddle and flees from her nest, a desperate emergency raid ensuing to find something appropriate to keep her new friend in.
*The young urchin is quick to slip from just a ground-thief into a wall climbing one. With a haste born of desperation she picks one of the richer houses, one she knows has had children. She scopes the place out rapidly, almost carelessly, but finds a safe route in up over a vine. She scrambles upward.
The top of the vine lets her into an open window, which would be a good thing but for the large dog left in there with the sleeping children. It takes one look at her and begins to brak furiously. Terrified Storm pulls herself back out the window and clutches the side, out of sight as the household stirs and runs, trying to find the cause of the dogs' distress. Storm is nearly spotted when one man thinks to look out the window, but a woman's voice tells him that he is an unmitigated idiot, no theif would be light enough to climb the vine.
She waits until the comotion has died away, then finally lets herself breath again. Drenched with sweat she edges back into the room, the dog having been removed on suspicion of squirrels. Crouched low and completely silent she pads across the room and sneaks through the partially open door. It takes her the better part of an hour and three more close calls before she finds something suitable for her new companion, it is the work of one and half hours, and five close calls, to get it back out and home.
Getting it into her nest proves another challenge, one that takes far too much time, she reaches the nest to find that the cloth is well dry, her Ariment mewing softly in the towel, weakly. In a rush she tips it into the bath, fills it with water, and prays.*
*Storm spends the next few hours kneeling on the cold stones next to the bath, stroking her ariments' head and crooning softly, singing sometimes, worrying constantly. The creature seems to have shrunk from the time is hatched, which makes her fret even more.*
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry... be ok, please be ok"
*It becomes her mantra, she repeats the phrase over and over again, reinforcing it in her mind as well, in case she is able to hear her thoughs*
"Please... if I give you a name will you try?"
*The soft plea gets a weak mewling, Storm hunkers back and thinks with haunted eyes, picking up one of the shell shards she rubs it against her cheek.*
"So light, they are beautiful... almost see-though... crystal... Chrystal, that's a good name... do you think you're a Chrystal?"
*That gets a slightly louder and more enthusiastic response, Storm grins weakly*
"all right Chrystal, now you have to be ok, you just have to be"
*She tucks the fragmnt back into her pouch and scrubs back over to look in the bath, in that short moment Chrys seems to have drifted off to sleep. Topping up the water in the bath Storm stands and heads out, she needs to talk to the wagon-lady, to make sure that Chrys will be ok*

Dangerous Cat

Atan sat in the wagon and stoned (stared blankly) at the wall, eating lunch without really savouring the taste.

Wonder how the owners are coping?

As if in reply, the patter of light footsteps reached her ears, halting just as they reached the wagon.

Someone was out there.
