Biology:
The Runners are kind of unusual (at least to humans!) because they have three genders: Male, Female, and Eso. Modern Runners evolved from intelligent but solitary predators following the end of an Ice Age. They became very social and loving beings, hunting in packs. Each gender is specialized to perform a specific function when hunting. Runners can hunt alone, but they are much more efficient in groups! Of course, Runners hunt only for fun and recreation these days. They are quite civilized.
Males:
Male Runners are very heavy-bodied and immensely strong. In the old days, a male's job in hunting was to catch the prey animal by the nose and hold it still while his packmates did the rest of the work. Males have a reputation for being loyal, determined, and steadfast.
Females:
Females are long-legged with long, razor-sharp tusks. When hunting as a pack the females would charge into a herd of prey animals, seperating their chosen target from its fellows. They would run the animal to exhaustion, occasionally darting in to rake it with their tusks. Then they would chase it to the waiting males and esos. Females are, as a whole, the fiercest of the genders. They are bold, daring, domineering, and can be quite brutal. Though females can be quite sweet and gentle, they will always have a wild streak.
Esos:
Though smaller and weaker than males and females, esos are quite intelligent and manipulative. Esos are often the "ringleaders". They are light and very agile. It was esos who darted in to kill a trapped prey animal, expertly dodging its wicked hooves and horns. Though they have a reputation for craftiness, esos are normally quite pleasant. They are just used to using brains to make up for their lack of brawn, a habit picked up from squabbling with siblings. Note: Esos are referred to as "she" and "her".
Breeding:
It takes three Runners, one of each gender, to make TEH BEBBEHZ. Three mate-bonded Runners is called a Triad. Runners are very loyal to their chosen mates and will not breed indiscriminately.
How it works (in case you wondered):
The mating, uh, process, goes like this: Male mates with Female, Female mates with Eso, Eso "births" the litter. The male + female mating works just like regular old human whoopee, but Runner females cannot carry the fertilized egg to term without an eso's participation. After a while, the egg is passed off to the eso, who incubates it in a pouch on her belly (think kangaroo). In the eso's pouch, the egg splits into three seperate foetuses. A few months later, a litter is born! Standard litters contain one male, one female, and one eso. Sometimes there will be twins, and sometimes a foetus will die in the pouch or be still-born. sad
Note: Sorry but non-standard mates (example, two males or two females) cannot produce children. You need all three ingredients to make a yummie babie stew. Mmmm, baby stew.
