Not much to report this time; at least, not anything concrete. To cover the salient points:
1. The 'Fortuna' box still isn't cooperating. I've discovered that there is, in fact, a Wheel of Fortune who might be able to explain the box to me; however, he's rarely seen, if at all, so that's probably a dead-end.
2. The individual who gave me the above information was Justice, or Meep, whom I met in the hallways and thus finally remembered. She doesn't seem to have changed much, except for the addition of another dog.
3. Also from Justice, I have discovered that this memory-loss isn't unique to myself; it seems that many, if not all, of the Arcana have it, and that it eventually fades the more you interact with the others. This apparently means that I'll have to start doing just that.
Justice mentioned having strange dreams, or nightmares, concerning war in the Castle, and conflict featuring the Major Arcana; she also informed me that the conflict was sparked because of the King of Wands choosing a bride. My guesses, then, run as follows:
~ Being in the centre of the Four Kingdoms (Swords, Pentacles, Cups, Wands) would make the Castle at least aware of any conflict between any of the Kingdoms; I'd say it would be difficult for them to ignore a conflict between all four.
~ The Major Arcana would possibly have participated in the war because of various reasons; the war would affect them one way or another, for example, and one has to assume they were people as well as Cardholders. They likely had different opinions on the conflict, took different sides, some may have had a hand (direct or otherwise) in it's beginning; it's then easy to see how conflict might have formed within the Castle itself, between the Major Arcana, especially for those in positions of political power, or who had a lot to do with the world outside the Castle.
~ As to why the King of Wands getting married would be such a problem, there are numerous possibilities: She was already taken, she was of a different social-class, he was breaking a prior engagement for her, she was of another Kingdom, or perhaps she was even someone from the Castle itself... One of the Major Arcana, perhaps? That would cause a stir if some believed that such a marriage would cause the Kingdom of Wands to be favored over the others. Also, I hadn't heard that he was married, only that he chose his bride; presumably, then, the conflict erupted and they were never actually wed?
There's just too much room for guesswork, and not anywhere near enough clues to fill the blanks; I could make endless conjectures, and any of them could be right, but how am I to know which one? Or maybe I'm missing the point entirely, and it's something I'd never dream of thinking of; at this point in time, while I wouldn't be surprised, it's still too early to tell.
At the very least, though, I find myself interested in this new mystery; perhaps, though, I should call it an ancient mystery, as it's no doubt remained unsolved since the fall of the Castle and the Kingdoms. At least, I've never found any record of these events or this place Outside, and I've found precious little information here, in any case.
There's always the possibility that the center of the conflict was the Castle, itself, and the King of Wand's engagement - whatever the specifics - was merely a reason for it to take place. If the Major Arcana were the only ones who never aged... if there were demons, angels, and who-knows-what-else, as I've heard there are, and all twenty-two had some kind of tie to the Castle... it wouldn't surprise me if the people of the Kingdoms became uneasy after a while. We don't even know the way these Kingdoms were run, or the terms of their existance with the Castle's inhabitants; even if it were a fair and just system, who WOULDN'T grow wary of a court of immortals?
So, for example, if time had passed, and the Major Arcana hadn't aged, then the people of the Four Kingdoms may have gotten suspicious, or resentful, or perhaps just nervous; maybe the King of Wands discovered the truth of their immortality, and it was such a revelation that it caused the land to fall into war and destruction, possibly starting with a beseigement of the Castle and then turning into an all-out war as the conflict grew. But what kind of secret could possibly have that kind of effect, and what has it to do with the King of Wands' fiancee?
I wish I knew whatever he knew, but it seems I'm going to have to discover it - if I ever do - the hard way, through hard work and dumb luck. Maybe that box can help me out, here... if it ever stops giving me cheap plastic lighters and crusts of bread.
