NOTE: I have been told by administration that this petition is allowed to go on, so please do not argue otherwise.
The recent glitch with the July 2005 donation items (which I'm sure you're all aware of) brought up an interesting debate. The avatar bases, which are no more detailed than a Barbie or Ken doll that six-year-old girls play with, are considered to be PG-13. As you can see, they are low-detail (the male isn't even anatomically correct) enough that they deserve a PG-13 rating. Therefore, why should the administrators keep us from editing our avatars in such a way? I know a lot of girls have been having fun with being able to edit their avatars to show their chest. For the most part (or at least from what I've seen, as I no longer even bother going to Chatterbox anymore) it's all been in good taste, and simply for the sake of amusement. So, why can't we edit this way? I say we should! If not just for the amusement of it, then for roleplaying as well (only tasteful roleplaying; I am not condoning cybering or other sexually explicit concepts). Also, I think I can honestly say that Nakie Day would have been a much bigger hit with this option available.
There have been a couple of arguments against this. The first is that because there is nudity, some people might accuse Gaia of hosting softcore pornography. However, this is not the case. Pornography is defined as sexually explicit material that has the intended purpose of causing sexual arousal. There is a difference between simple nudity and pornography. Tasteful nudity, such as paintings and sculptures that depict the human body, is not considered pornography because it does not depict sexual situations, nor is it intended for arousal. The nude avatars would fall under this category. Yes, there are some people who might get sexually aroused from nude avatars, but that doesn't make it any different. There are also people who might become sexually aroused by a tasteful nude painting, but that does not mean the painting is pornography. There are also people who might get turned on seeing an avatar in a Nitemare Bustier or Dancer Bottoms. If they get aroused by such things, then good for them. It's still not pornography because: 1. it is in good taste, and 2. it is not intended to cause arousal. Also, they are only low-detail cartoon pixels. Nothing to get upset about.
The second thing that people have complained about on this subject is that little kids do use the site. But does this mean that we have to accomodate for them? No! Gaia Online is a PG-13 site, and therefore any PG-13 material can be shown here. In fact, when you sign up for a new account, one of the things that they ask is whether or not you are 13, and if you aren't, that it is acceptable for you to be viewing PG-13 material. Anyone who should not be viewing PG-13 material should not be on the site in the first place. And if anyone wants to be on the site but doesn't want to see nude avatars, then a censor feature can easily be implemented, similar to the censor feature for words that was recently introduced.

UPDATE: Also, look at the new glitch (Sept. 7). Full frontal and rear nudity for all Gaians. No one is freaking out about how "offensive" it is (that's because it isn't). People aren't going around cybering like crazy (at least not any more than before). People aren't losing faith in Gaia because of it. I say fix the glitch, but leave the ability to be nude! People seem to be enjoying it! Mass pandemonium has not broken out!
In the end, what I think will happen is, people will go crazy with the idea for about a week or so, though still not being too inappropriate with it, then most people will use it for small touches to their avatars, or else at least have a better-looking alternative to the ugly gray underwear that's default.
Now for the actual petition. If you would like to sign, please state so in this thread. Please do not PM me! Bumpers are always appreciated too. wink But try not to bump too much... Just enough to keep the thread on the first page. Too many bumps can get in the way of discussions and people signing the petition. gonk Considering how busy the Petition forum is, we probably only need about one bump every 10 minutes at most if we want to keep it easily visible, although every half hour should keep it on the first page. sweatdrop Besides that, I'd rather not see the thread become to messy with bumps and such. There are also people who might get turned on seeing an avatar in a Nitemare Bustier or Dancer Bottoms. If they get aroused by such things, then good for them. It's still not pornography because: 1. it is in good taste, and 2. it is not intended to cause arousal. Also, they are only low-detail cartoon pixels. Nothing to get upset about.
The second thing that people have complained about on this subject is that little kids do use the site. But does this mean that we have to accomodate for them? No! Gaia Online is a PG-13 site, and therefore any PG-13 material can be shown here. In fact, when you sign up for a new account, one of the things that they ask is whether or not you are 13, and if you aren't, that it is acceptable for you to be viewing PG-13 material. Anyone who should not be viewing PG-13 material should not be on the site in the first place. And if anyone wants to be on the site but doesn't want to see nude avatars, then a censor feature can easily be implemented, similar to the censor feature for words that was recently introduced.

UPDATE: Also, look at the new glitch (Sept. 7). Full frontal and rear nudity for all Gaians. No one is freaking out about how "offensive" it is (that's because it isn't). People aren't going around cybering like crazy (at least not any more than before). People aren't losing faith in Gaia because of it. I say fix the glitch, but leave the ability to be nude! People seem to be enjoying it! Mass pandemonium has not broken out!
In the end, what I think will happen is, people will go crazy with the idea for about a week or so, though still not being too inappropriate with it, then most people will use it for small touches to their avatars, or else at least have a better-looking alternative to the ugly gray underwear that's default.

Just enough to keep the thread on the first page.
