"Even while ye snooze,
there be things that make the news."

Sometimes, things happen on the island of Taratoa. Unplanned? Planned? You'll see it all here. If there's a twist in the storyline, you can find it. (And believe us, there shall be lots of twists, so we hope.) So sit back, relax (or maybe, panic...depending on whether or not the event involves a god wreaking havoc on the entire world) and enjoy the news.

- GENERAL NEWS -

[x] July 17, 1605 [x] - Another new and this time final location for the HQ? So it seems. Moving further into the caves of The Baths, perhaps? Looks like someone moved out and a bigger space opened up!
[x]July, 1605[x] - Looks like there have been sightings of many new totems... Record amounts, in fact! Stay up-to-date!
[x]April 24, 1605[x] - A new location?
[x]April 16, 1605[x] - It looks like it's time for the planning to begin...

- GODS/TEMPLE NEWS -

[x] July, 1605 [x] - The gods have blessed the lands with an unusual amount of rainfall, (even for us!) And, as if that wasn't enough, it seems that sightings of totems are in record numbers this month...

"Listen to the long tale of this here land,
come down to the beaches and sit upon the sand."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Taratoa was an island, resting upon the seas. One would have called it uninhabited, virgin, for no finger of man touched its shores or forests. There lived animals...a great many animals...real and spirit alike, who spoke amongst themselves, never setting a paw, talon, or hoof outside the isolated island.

Surrounding them was the vast and deep Sea of Clouds, which held fog so thick that no ship could brave it. Nobody knew what lie behind the blanket, and no creature who spoke lived to return home and tell the tale.

The outside world was aflame with hatred. It was cruel and greedy, a time of trade upon the high seas, when protection and bounty hunters were needed to insure the safety of the many. Yet the hunters were no better than the pirates they hunted. They lived in luxury at the expensive of others.

But revenge was eminent, too. And the winds of change sailed with a particular ship sailing across the flat horizon. A slaver known only as The Eel. Upon it were both pirates and hunters alike, who had formed a sort of treaty and had found themselves a common enemy or perhaps...cargo.

Kidnapped from faraway islands were dozens of women...yes, they were slaves. Beautiful creatures, locked away in the brig, intended to exist only as decoration and ways to expand and add new blood to the royal families. When young, they would do their duties as concubines and when they aged (and that would happen quickly in these smoggy colony towns) they would become maids, and then die quickly. This was not a lifestyle for brilliant people such as themselves, but just as these pirates saw a forest as lumber and a beach as a fishery, they saw people as profit.

Most of the girls seemed to accept their fate, and this was the saddest fact. But there was one girl who would not, under any circumstances.

Her name was Totokai, and she had been born of a single mother. She had been growing up on a faraway village to the north, and she would have no part of this fickle deal that she'd been forced into. She demanded that the girls rise up against the captain...every single one of them. At first, they did not take her seriously, but her daily talk of a perfect world beyond the cloudiest sea began to take its toll on their hope-drained minds.

They began to sing songs about it...talk about it...pass notes (written in their own languages, so that their captors could not understand, of course) about it. Mutiny began one night.

The crew, paying no heed to anything but night watch, hardly noticed the rise of voices behind them...voices who had broken free from the brig. They had no weapons but planks and broken bilge pipes, and no cries of battle that were not in song and no leader but a rebellious girl not even in her twenties.

The main deck was washed with blood and seawater on that night, and many from both sides jumped ship in hopes of escaping the clubbing and gunfire. But the end was the end, and the former servants won.

The group of to-be concubines and their children rebelled against the ship's crew, throwing them overboard, slitting their throats, and doing a number of unspeakably horrible things, all to balance out the awful things that the crew had done to them.

Soon, when every enemy soldier, living, dying, and dead alike, had been hauled overboard, Totokai appointed herself the new captain and sent the ship careening through the Sea of Clouds.

The men had demanded that they speak nothing of their own religious beliefs, and that they believe in one god and pray daily to lift their devilish spirits from the depths of hell. But they believed differently, and almost every one of the survivors believed in many, many gods...not just one.

"Okanea is the lord of the seas," Totokai explained to her new crew and followers, "He will take us where no other ship could go, if we believe in him and no other."

As the book says, there were trials and deaths, storms and sea beasts, but the loyalty to the ocean dragon lord as opposed to the loyalty of a false god (whom all others who had crossed believed in) kept the ship sailing in the right direction without fail. Day, sunset, night, and sunrise, the Amazons wandered alone in the waters of the Sea of Clouds. The fog was so thick that sometimes they could hardly tell the difference between night and day. They survived on rats, hardtack, seaweed, anything they could find. They used spare planks to fuel lanterns and torches in hopes of keeping the memory of the sun alive in the oppressive haze.

Two months and three days after the revolution, the sun began to shine brightly again. The Sea of Clouds, a great, circumambient gray ring around the promised Island, was behind them, and it had turned from gray to white: the fluffy consistency of low-lying clouds now replaced the dismal, clammy abyss whose thickness muddled the sky and sea together.

They landed upon the shore of the great land. The giant slaver ship was left anchored, not too far out at sea. Old rowboats, some of which had never touched their belly to the water, were set out upon the calm seas to take the freed slaves to the tropical wonderland before them.

Never, not even back in their homes, had they seen a place of such beauty. Their footprints upon the sand marked the first ever made by humans. They traveled the beach for two days, sleeping under the starry heavens. Never had the gods made a clearer sky.

On the third day, they found a great group of rocks. Giant rocks, some a hundred feet high, lying on the beach in awkward fashions, forming a series of open caves. Sand and little pools of seawater formed the flooring of the lowest level, but some rocks could be climbed upon and could hold belongings and food. Few creatures inhabited the place and even fewer of them were of a threatening nature, and so the tribe decided to settle around these "Baths."

Totokai, who had become a benevolent leader despite her vicious fighting during the revolution, was chosen to speak atop the greatest rock in the largest room of the Baths.

"We are the Sisterhood, the people of this island. Never again will outsiders touch our bodies against our will or demand we obey their laws and stay silent when they speak," Totokai explained over her audience, "This is a wild land...and it is ours to do as we wish. But never will we follow the example of our captors. Never will we take any more than we need and never will we cut down a forest just to make a town. We shall live under the stars, eat fish cooked over open flame, and bathe in rivers."

The sisterhood began to settle there, building inventions and families within the sandy rocks. They ate almost entirely fish for meat, and picked vegetables, berries, and seaweed. Their technology was primitive, but enough. Never did they mine or pick up an axe, for always did the gods provide for them a fallen tree or a gemstone.

As the months rolled by, Totokai, who had had two birthdays since the revolution, realized that the Sisterhood would not be around forever.

Alone, she went to the middle of the island, without telling anyone, and begged to the gods to make the Amazons immortal so that they could forever own this perfect land. Of course, the gods could do no such thing, but they could promise Totokai something novel and just as wonderful. When she heard their suggestion, she was absolutely dumbfounded.

When she reached the "town" again, she called all of the tribe to a meeting. "I have gone to the peak of Mt. Lantern and returned," she began, "And the gods have done something unspeakable. The Sisterhood will live forever."

A hundred years passed, as did Totokai and all of the original survivors of the mutiny. Yet the Sisterhood did live on...forever blessed. Rumors of Taratoa stretched to the furthest of islands. These strange, half-spirit Amazons with the faces and bodies of humans yet characteristics of animals, would forever be the only creatures upon this island. Their numbers grew to the thousand mark, now that the gods had blessed them with a sort of magical reproduction.

Their lifestyle stayed infinitely in tune with nature; each of them had a spirit animal guide who spoke to them and no other. And even as pirate ships tried to come through the thick sea of clouds in hope of making slaves of these girls blessed by the gods, the island stayed unchanged; protected by five gods. Okanea, the sea dragon, who had guided them there. Arohanui, who had given them abundance in resources and a reason to love each other. Nuikana, the goddess who had brought them eternal warmth and consistent weather. Kinotara, who controlled the circle of life. And Taratoa, the goddess of the island, who would remain there forever, guarding her peoples until time itself ended.

Taratoa is an island, part of an isolated archipelago. But it remains the most isolated of the isolated islands, rarely, if ever, coming into contact with any of them. There are seven main "regions" and many smaller places among those.

- REGIONS -

1.) The Swamp River Delta - The swamp is a dangerous place, and is rarely ever visited by anyone in their right mind. It is highly suggested that everyone stay out of the swamp, lest they die a most horrible death.
2.) The Great Plains - The great plains are a dangerous area, with only sparse clusters of trees hardly counting as forest. Many great creatures watch over the pampas plain, as do some strange, loose tribes. There are a great many hills, but mostly the plains are just open tropical grassland.
3.) The Volcano Fields – Staying out of the volcano fields is a must for any original Sisterhood Amazon. Because of political status, no further information about the volcano fields will be given to the general public.
4.) Maunga-Nui - The great dormant volcano, Maunga Nui is a mountain now overgrown with lush trees (at least at lower altitudes.) There are many caverns within, and possibly some scattered tribes as well.
5.) Deep Jungle - "Deep Jungle" is a general term for any part of the jungle that is so overgrown that light rarely, if ever, reaches the ground. However, the center of the island is particularly dense, so it is given this name.
6.) Ridge Mountains - What fences in the Sisterhood’s land from that of outlying tribes, the Ridge Mountains mark the border between sanctuary and chaos. They are difficult to cross, but not so much so that they can’t be crossed at all. (And there is always the beach and thick jungle around them as an alternative.)
7.) The Baths - The home of the Sisterhood, the Baths is the most densely populated area on all of Taratoa. They are a series of giant rocks that form a large series of "open caves" bordering the shore and the light jungle around it.

- TRIBES -

Taratoa is also home to several tribes. Though there are many scattered ones, there are some ones that are particularly large.

Sisterhood Amazons - The largest of the tribes, and by far the most civilized, the Sisterhood lives in an imperfect but overall successful and peaceful society. Very few things are frowned upon in the Sisterhood (with the exception of things such as murder and violence) and the town is generally very open.

The Sisterhood’s land covers a large peninsula, which is decorated with rivers, ponds, beaches, and light and dense jungle alike. Their central “town" is at a place known as The Baths. ((All Amazons that are roleplayed start out as being in the Sisterhood. They may choose to join a different tribe at a later date.))

Guardians of Goto-Nui - The guardians are few and far between. Many choose simply to join other tribes as time m oves on. The Guardians are not really a formed “tribe", but rather a secret organization that gathers near the summit of Maunga-Nui to discuss the happenings of the heavens. They are said to be able to predict the future and interpret prophesies.

Their central "town" is really more of a luxurious meeting hall, called Goto-Nui. Few ever see it, because it is hidden so well, and even said to be invisible to some.

Plainsfolk - The Plainsfolk are about 50/50 when it comes to chaos versus order. Many who live there aspire to one day join the Sisterhood, but alas cannot due to distance and the looming danger of facing those living in and around the Volcano Fields

The Plainsfolk are scattered and have no central town. Not much is known about their society's inner workings.

Ashfields Clan - All who are banished are sent to the Volcano Fields. It was bound to happen that, over time, a new clan would build up on the barren, unforgiving wasteland. The Ashfields Clanmembers eat mostly fish and weeds, and are a very corrupt and unstable society. They have the highest tendencies towards violence, murder, rape, and anything else nasty that you can think of. They are known to kidnap members of other clans, especially important ones, and force them to think for their clan. Is a revolution in order? Are there spies and double-agents?

Their land covers almost all of the volcano fields. Their central town is at a place known as Horned Mountain, which is no more than a tall rise of rocks and the areas surrounding it.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Totems are interesting things...a rarity, no doubt, when they appear, it is because the gods have a new vision in mind for a new creature. Most of the time, this creature is an animal, but sometimes, it's an Amazon.

Though children can be born from two other Amazons deeply (very, very deeply, unlike those darn human relationships) in love, they also come from, yes, totems. Amazon totems are crafted from the four elements: Okanea's water (driftwood), Nuikana's fire (ceramic), Arohanui's trees (tiki), and Kinotara's heart (bone.) Sometimes, the elements have an effect of what the Amazon looks like, but not always (for instance, a seabird totem can be carved out of bone and still be associated with a seabird, but will not have the same water element, and will focus on a different element instead.) Driftwood totems are the most elaborate in design, but have virtually no color. Ceramic totems are simpler (and cuter) in design, but are wonderfully vibrant and painted with patterns. Tiki and Bone fall somewhere in between, Tiki being painted with large spots of color, and Bone being bejeweled and beaded.

How well the totem is taken care of will ultimately decide the Amazon's fate when it is "born." The Amazon can change her wardrobe, hair, and even some parts of her body (though not on a whim), but she cannot change what element and animal she is affiliated with.

Amazons have seven stages of development, one of which is very difficult to reach. They are, in order, Totem, Baby, Toddler, Child, Teen, Adult, and Enlightened. They have no "Elder" stage, because the island has blessed them (or cursed them, as some could see it) with eternal youth. Most Amazons will die eventually, unless they reach an Enlightened state. "Enlightened" in this case, is simply another word for Goddesslike.

- TOTEM STAGE -

Not all Amazons begin as totems, but "babies" can only be obtained by breeding and such. This particular one is made of driftwood (note the lack of color but the intricacy of the design) and is carved to resemble a lionfish. Few totems closely resemble the animals they represent, but rather are more mystical-looking.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
- TODDLER STAGE -

Gaah! She's here! Note that that the animal is a little more mythical looking than its standard form (and, in some cases like with this lionfish, a hecka a lot bigger.) At this point, the Amazon is required to write in her log. Both her and the totem animal have appeared. (The totem animal, by the way, can be male or female.) She can begin to explore around the HQ (and a little bit outside it, with the help of her animal companion), but should probably stay close, for she's certainly not able to take care of herself. Lots of young Amazons draw (not very well, but nonetheless) pictures of the things they see (this is a useful addition to journals!)

- CHILD STAGE -

Now the Amazon has reached some level of independence (finally!) She can begin to explore around the island with a group (and occasionally by herself, with her animal)but stay out of the shadow zones. She might start finding Amazons she likes more than others (or not, some kids just aren't interested in that) but probably won't act on her feelings. Her animal guardian, by now, is fully grown.

- TEEN STAGE -

It is common belief that teenagers are angry and highly sexual. True, some are, but it is not as bad on Taratoa as it is over the pond, mostly because teenagers are considered completely independent of their "parents" (the NPCs.) They can be all over the map...some do not change personality from their child and toddler stages, while others change drastically. Some begin to feel incredibly depressed as well (still, others stay cheery as ever?)

- YOUTH STAGE -

- ADULT STAGE -

- ENLIGHTENED STAGE -

- SHOP RULES -

1.) Do not steal art. Do not steal layouts, ideas, or characters either. (If you're making another Amazon-themed shop, Zyrael would prefer if you'd make a nice post or PM, she's very nice about it!) We simply do not hold with such nonsense.
2.) Do not ask for an Amazon. None are available means just that...none are available. Currently, you have to be invited to get an Amazon, unless you are well-known for being a good RP-intensive pet roleplayer. (Then PM Zyrael.) Auctions are planned soon.
3.) We always care about roleplaying over cash. So don't try to bribe Zyrael with a superexpensive item unless you're a good writer.
4.) Do not ask for male Amazons. It gets ridiculously annoying. The word "Amazon" means a wild woman. Woman. No males, other than some of the animal totems. But you cannot have a male human character.
5.) Don't whine about how it's unfair that this is an RP-intensive "yuri" shop and not an RP-intensive "yaoi" shop. There are plenty more boy/boy shops than girl/girl. If you are not into this sort of thing, leave. We are not a yuri-themed shop, but all romance will probably be lesbianistic. End of story.
6.) No pet trades as of current. Pet trades have been promised to two people if they are interested. But other than them, Zy will not do pet trades, regardless of how good your art is. If Zy wants one of your pets, she will try for it in a contest/raffle/flatsale/auction just like everyone else.
7.) The "diamondback for an Amazon" deal is only open to those who have been invited. This may change in the future, but right now it is as it is.
8.) Literacy is golden. Try not to spam, and try to use proper grammar. Nobody likes a n00b who comes in and says "OMG!12121 ckyoote petZ1121" The Amazon world is a generally serious one, for serious role-players, interested in a deep storyline.
9.) No complaining about anything. This should be pretty straightforward. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. Our suggestion is to compliment Zyrael's art instead of complaining about how, for instance, you don't think that two women should be allowed to have a relationship. Nobody here cares what you think.
10.) Be nice. Even to illeterate n00bs. We're not running a hate-fest here. Let everyone have a piece of the Amazon pie. ((Amazon pie? I'm not saying that.))

- ROLEPLAY RULES -

1.) The Amazon world of Taratoa is completely separate from Gaia. Your Amazon does not know you nor your other pets. Never, ever, ever roleplay as your Gaia character taking care of your Amazon. Roleplay as your Amazon. Do not connect your Amazon to your Gaia character's life (or vice versa) in any way.
2.) Do not send gifts. The only people who can give gifts to one another are the Amazons themselves...and only appropriate ones. Remember, we're talking a primeval island set in the 1600's.
3.) Don't kill your character, please. It's not very nice. Everyone loves your character for some reason or another. If you decide that you no longer want to update and can't take care of the "pet", then we shall have an out-of-character event regarding giving it to a new home. (Clearly, the new "owner" will simply pick up where the old one left off, though they may make a new journal...the first post will link to the one that the previous "owner" wrote in.) No, you will typically not get a refund, sorry.
4.) Be literate. Seriously. We're not going to be hypersensitive if you make one or two mistakes, but try not to type "liek dis!12" Use capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling correctly. Amazons do not say things like "OMG U r KYOOTE ^__^. IR HIT U WIT GRYPHOCAMPUS!2121 T3h s3ctz." ((*Hits the person who writes these examples.*))
5.) It's preferred if you reserve the first few posts for information and such. That's common sense...almost everyone does it! After all, if you just start off with a journal entry, it's kind of annoying to those who want to learn more.
6.) Don't attempt the impossible. This means no godmoding or glory-hogging, and no traveling the island and having great adventures while still in toddler stage. Anything that involves hurting, describing the actions of, or controlling someone else's character without their permission will be edited and deleted as if it never happened.
7.) One Amazon per person. You get one character and that's it. So design wisely and make sure you're comfortable. You can change the character a bit (hair length, maybe even hair color) as they grow, but don't do anything drastic, unless the Amazon has a particular ability that allows that (color-changing skin, hair, etc.)
8.) Please, be serious. This is not just another pet you can shove into your sig and brag about. We expect you to become a fairly large part of the community. If you aren't willing to do so, then you're probably not a very good candidate for receiving an Amazon, questing or not.
9.) Zyrael can make banners if you'd like! For Amazon journals, Zyrael will give you the option of having her draw 15 headers and 1 general footer image if you'd like! Please don't ask her to draw anything big, however. If you don't have Photoshop or another good graphics program, then this is a good idea.
10.) While you don't have too, many people make mules for their journals. It's fun to recreate your character in Gaia (or at least, as best you can with the given items!) You don't -have- to if you absolutely hate the idea, but it's preferred, since it adds to the experience of being in-character.

- AUCTION RULES -

1.) All auctions are roleplay auctions. You are required to bid AND answer a prompt. This may seem a novel concept, but believe me, it's what works best.
2.) You do not need to update a prompt every time you make a higher bid. This is self-explanatory.
3.) We care much more about roleplaying skills than we do cash. So making a good prompt is your best bet. If we have a bunch of people with good prompts, then we can get into a bidding war, but otherwise...
4.) Almost all auctions are custom auctions. Please fill out the custom form if you win. (we do not take customs on a day-to-day basis.)

- OTHER/GUILD RULES -

1.)Don't ask Zyrael for art/banners/tags, with the exception of banners for your Amazon's journal. She's not going to give you any, quite frankly. It's not very nice to PM someone just to say "I like your art...make me some for no cost!" If you have Diamondback fish/mask, or even a devil tail, we'll talk. She'll usually be nice about things, but don't go out of your way to tick her off...or feel the wrath of the Graylist or even Blacklist.
2.)No politics allowed. Don't argue about things...we're trying our best to get along. Don't come here and flame the thread or the OOC chat thread in the guild.
3.)Feel free to join the guild, regardless of whether or not you are an Amazon "owner." You can talk about stuff there! But please, don't post any threads of your own and don't post a quest thread. All of the "regular" threads in the guild are either for roleplaying or for individual journals. If you are questing, that goes in Gaia's Quests/Charity forumthing.
4.) Please don't complain about the entry price. 5 gold really isn't all that much. Seriously.
5.) At this time, all art is done by Zyrael. Do not ask if you can guest color, sorry. No buts, ifs, or ands.
6.) Please, for the love of all that matters, NO COSPLAYS! Tell me exactly how a cosplay would work? Huh? Right...you have no answer. That's what I thought.
7.) No pet trades as of right now. Pet trades have been promised to two people, and they know who they are. But other than them, pet trades are NOT welcome forms of payment. If Zyrael wants a pet, she will quest/bid/buy it herself. End of story.
8.) You are expected to be knowledgeable about the Amazon world. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Zyraeleth, but otherwise, read about them in the story or FAQ. It's kinda sad to have someone with a lot of roleplaying skill, but no idea what they're talking about.

"Items to buy, trade and sell,
now doesn't that sound very swell?"

More information regarding items and how to get them is coming soon, but right now we can tell ye a few things. Items are found by roleplaying. Sometimes, if you are just wandering the beach, you might see an event (posted by an NPC/Amazon HQ account) that there is a piece of driftwood, or a ceramic pot, or something else interesting. You can keep it for yourself, give it to someone else, etc. All items that are found will go here so that people can see what sort of thing is available.

The Item Shop is soon-to-come in the guild, and there you will be able to buy (pretty common) things (for Gaia gold or maybe some form of "Amazon Points" wink as well.

"Gold is for those good and glad,
but gray and black are rather bad."

There are three kinds of people: the generous, the no-goods, and those who are as hellish as Davey Jones himself. Here, those sorts will be tracked. The Goldlist is the list that someone should feel honored (or at least good) if they're on, because this be the list for those who've helped out or done good. The Graylist is for those who have committed mild crimes. The Blacklist...well...it's worse than the Graylist. Let's put it that way, yarr.

- GOLDLIST -

Triple_Espresso - Brainstorming ideas before Amazons was even on Gaia!
Shimmercat - Helping me with ideas and generally helping out.
Endejester - Helping people out by drawing out some concepts for them. Thanks a ton!
All the regulars - Without you guys, Amazons wouldn't have gotten anywhere!

- GRAYLIST -

We can all rejoice! Nobody is here yet! Hooray!

- BLACKLIST -

We can all further rejoice! Nobody is here either!
