Welcome to Gaia! ::

My little sister and her friend asked me if one had to be "against the flag" if one was an anarchist. Her friend told me that her cousin turned the American flag upside-down because she was an anarchist. I couldn't give them a sure answer, because I don't know how anarchists view the flag and the government it stands for. My guess would be yes, that anarchists generally don't like it, but I'd like some informed opinions, if you please.
i think it depends on what is ment by "the flag" i see flags as a visual representation of a specific piece of land or idea and therefore have nothing against the flags themselves just ocaisionaly what they represent. but in there simbolisation of the government of a country then it represents somthing that anarchists are against and it would make sence that they would dislike it.
to me a flag is just a piece of cloth nothing more so i have nothing against them.
What tenehuini said, basically.

The black flag you'll see Anarchists wave about is considered by many to be the "anti-flag," just as much a symbol of our anti-state sentiments as states' flags represent the nationalism of each nation.

Since anarchy is, stripped to brass tacks, a position in firm opposition to all forms of government...

...Protesting against symbols of specific governments is not out of the question. It is not in any way required for anarchists to disrespect the flag since, well, it's not required for anarchists to do anything. There aren't any rules, that would be self-defeating.

But, yes, certainly not unreasonable for an anarchist to turn a flag upside down, burn it, tear it up, defecate on it, et cetera. Though of course most won't, knowing full well that people take offense to that kind of thing and are less likely to join The Cause if they are made aware of it.
I'd suggest that people who are willing to join an anarchist cause are probably not likely to be very offended by someone shitting on the flag of an offending government. It's sort of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend, more or less."

But I would suspect that most flag-desecration taking place at the hand of domestic anarchists is probably the result of shock-mongering kids who just want to offend people in general than the act of people seriously committed to a world with no government.
Just as a side-note, the upside-down American flag is traditionally the symbol of AIM.

I guess it would make sense to protest a symbol for America if you wanted to be rid of all governments. So yes, she is an anarchist.
in my opinion, being an anarchist doesn't necessarily mean you have to be against all governments. surely by the classical and (i think)over-hyped description of anarchy as being complete and utter chaos and madness it may be. but for me, anarchy is more jsut about my life not being controlled by a governemtn and it's rules and amndates. the need to spread chaos would be a trait found only in those intolerant of others and their ways of life. i'm perfectly happy living on my own little slice of land dictating what ican and can't do to myself and only myself. i hate government in all it's forms...but that's only when it's applied to me. i can accept and live with those who feel the need for such comforts, so while i'm against it...i've got no place to impose my way of life on them..it's jsut like with religion, or other aspects of a life-style...and it's the intolerant ones that make life so hard to live....we may be getting better in terms of religion and sexual- orientation (very very slowly unfortunately) but we seem to ignore political stand point still... we may say it's ok to believe religiously in a different way from us, but we can't seem to accept that people may preferr to live in some way other than democracy.....sure democracy may seem to work really well for us ( i think it's corrupt and going down the crapper..has been for years) but again, like so much other stuff..who are we to say what's best for others? i'd say we should be happy, and jsut stay put. if others want to change, let them come to us. if they are intollerant and want to change us....nuke the suckers!...ok maybe not THAT severe...but sure we can defend ourselves from such interferrances..but does them trying to change us give us the right to return the injustice and try to change them? i think not....as for an upside down flag thingy...think of that like jsut a popular way to express your political outlook...sorta like a specific dress for a religion, like most orthodox jews do by wearing talit or other religious accoutrements. jsut because they do it, doesn't automatically make them anarchists....i wear blue a lot, i'm not a member of theg ang that is associated with it....that's the problem with symbols...they have too many meaning for the most part now...like the swastika...that used to be a GOOD symbol, and for some it still is (and i don't just mean nazi's) but it has been perverted by others and is now chiefly associated with that...meh..i'm rambling again...forgive me

In my view, it depends on what the flag symbolises. Though, not in the sense that it may represent the state or it may represent nothing, as it is just fabric.

It so obviously represents something, that is it's entire bloody purpose.

So, if it represents the government, then Anarchism is "against the flag" and if it represents the struggle for liberty made by the terrorist founders of the USA, then Anarchism is not necessarily against the flag.
only if the anarichic sign has "we R beeter dan teh AmErICan Flag Lolololol!!" written on it.

However anarchic ideas and legisitlation would be against the consistution. given that anarchy requires the total destruction of authority in order for it to be anarchy and such a socioty to work "in theory work anyway"

And this would mean you would have to destory the consistution and any right anyone had to uphold its prinicples.

In the Anarchist non-state people would be free to do as they will, they would be free to uphold the principles of whatever constitution they please.

Be that a past constitution, a current one, or a personal one.

Each man the master of his fate, the captain of his soul.
It's not so much a matter of being against the flag as it's a matter of the authoritarian government that it represents.
it's just nothing organized..each person free to live as they wish....most people would hopefully excercise common sense...your neighbor won't screw with you if you don't screw with them first. it's simply that you're going to have a big gaping hole where a body of your peers dictates what you can and can't do, or not even your peers...it's just like invictus_88 said "each man the master of his fate"...onyl you determine how you act.

Plenty of anarchists support organization - just not coercive or authoritarian organization.
fair enough, my bad for poor choice in using a ultimatum statement... jsut because I don't doesn't mean others don't.....
