Naia's Friends/Acquaintances

User Image
Aadil... Aadil, Aadil, Aadil. Naia's Guardian certainly doesn't like him. But that isn't stopping the mermaid. He was shot in front of her, causing that protective nature of hers to kick in. She doesn't really see this "monster" everyone talks about. Instead, she finds his honesty refreshing. No candy coating here.

User Image
Anen asked Naia to be his girlfriend!! eek So as of right now, she's so smitten she's put her foot in her mouth numerous times. And Brina's going on about chastity belts after finding the two in the midst of a tickle fight! What will happen next?

User Image
Arakel and Naia are two water Fa'e and have used that to find common ground in the past. In Atlantis, when she wasn't in control of herself, the mermaid almost kissed him (causing a world of trouble). But lately they've just been seen chumming around, like at the prom. The mermaid isn't quite sure what to do around him; his moods baffle her.

User Image
They've only met briefly, but Naia was overwhelmed by the exuberant personality (and clothing! wink ) of this little Fa'e.

User Image
Naia and Hoshi have never met. But Taka has spoken of him to her, and she does bear his star on her inner wrist.

User Image
She might have seen him around the HQ several times, but the thing Naia recalls best is seeing Yani streaking through the prom ballroom. : squee :

User Image
Taka and Naia haven't spoken in awhile. He has a standing invite to her home, whenever he needs. Once, he actually played his guitar for her. Still, there are things he hasn't trusted her with, so they aren't friends yet. But she isn't one to push him.

User Image
This little curmudgeon prompted Naia to test out her own powers. They haven't formally met, but the mermaid saw Taima playing (with lightning bolts) in the HQ one day and was intrigued. Perhaps because both of the girls are recluses they will be friends?

User Image
Therein lies a story. A toddler Sire spent one Easter in the mermaid's lap. A little while later she was teaching him how to swim. Naia felt--still feels, a bit--loyalty to her friend. This prompted her to go with him on a trip to save his uncle that ended in a few emotional/physical scars on the mermaid. She's distanced herself since learning of the murders of those unfortunate men... She cares for Sire, yes, but she's afraid of the pain that causes her.

User Image
Silver is pretty close to Naia. Certainly closer than a lot have the Fa'e have gotten. As a pup his exuberance bowled over her barriers and now she always looks forward to seeing him. However, with his new attitude and growth, the mermaid isn't quite sure how things stand.

User Image
Sati and Naia met during prom and then at the after-party. It was a little awkward making conversation, but it was pleasant enough by all accounts.

User Image
Riven, Naia met, while in Atlantis. She doesn't know him well, but he did give her an invite to the prom and a yellow flower. smile

User Image
Nyoka was actually the Fa'e who taught Naia how to slither. Unfortunately, the two had somewhat of a rift come between them when the mermaid (accidentally) made a move on Nyoka's then-boyfriend, Arakel. They're still a bit wary of each other.

User Image
Kia and Naia met in Atlantis while questing with Arakel. They bonded over shopping and talked. While they aren't close friends, they certainly aren't enemies.

Dear Diary,

Well, today Naia said her first word! It was anemone.... sweatdrop Honestly, I wonder where she gets this stuff. Certainly not from my side of the family.

But, she's a very peaceful toddler and I can easily get her to sleep by popping in the movie Finding Nemo. She loves bathtime and stays in there for hours splashing around! Honestly, I get tired of bathtime before she does! sweatdrop

I promised her that if she's good, when she gets a little older, I'd enlist the help of my friends to make her a big girl bed in the shape of a shell. Already tomorrow I've got my pal Zahra coming over to help paint Naia's room.... Whew!

Well, that's enough for today.
Dear Diary,

Today I took Naia to the beach for the very first time. We were down in Galveston, TX visiting some of my friends and we had a picnic on the beach. The water was a little too cold to go swimming, but we played at the edge of the tide line. She absolutely loved it! She splashed and laughed and built little mounds of seashells (I think they were supposed to be castles).

She wasn't too fond of the seagulls though... but I can't blame her. Nasty little birds. wink

She made me promise (yet again) to get her a pet hermit crab when she's a little older. She's so good at wheedling things out of me!
She's a big girl now - get cracking on that sea shell bed blaugh
Dear Diary,

You've no idea how hard it is to make a bed in the shape of a clam shell! Wood we found (after a few hours of cursing) just wasn't working. Patch finally had the good idea to try a plaster mold. But of course, that meant the bed would be horridly uncomfortable. I thought I was going to give up when Patch brought in a mattress she'd sewn out of thick layers of down. She also set to work on some silky type blue sheets. I dug up some down pillows and voila! A bed fit for a princess.

Naia seems to love it. She says it's like sleeping on a cotton ball. It's a pity she'll grow out of the bed, it's so cute the way she sinks into it. Ah, if they could only stay small forever.

Like a typical mommy, I've tons of rolls of film of Naia, but I've yet to get them developed! I'll have do that tomorrow... as well as find a little land hermit crab for Naia to play with. I did promise after all.

I'm getting a little antsy... it is nearly time for Naia to go off to school and I wonder how she will handle it...

Well, now isn't the time for worrying. What I have to worry about now is Naia's voracious appetite for sushi! It seems that while she was babysitting Aunt Patch explained what sushi was and (at Naia's insistence) let the girl try some... Now I can't get her to eat hardly anything else! Whatever happened to good ol' PB and J? sweatdrop
A treat for Naia from Anya for loving SUSHI!!!!

<awws and gives Naia the treat>

Naia: Mmm! Thankyou Anya-chan!
Dear Diary,

Today was pretty eventful in that I took Naia shopping with me and.. well... somehow we managed to adopt a stray. Please don't ask how it happened... sweatdrop So now we have a cat-boy around my age living with us.

They get on very well, surprisingly. Lucian watches after Naia while I'm off at work and at school. When I come home I find her cuddled up with him invariably reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (I refuse to read Naia children's books and want to start her on more advanced things... She catches on to the more foreign concepts after a bit of explanation).

I think, actually, Naia might have a little crush on Lucian and that's why she adores him so much. Often I'll find him putting up with her brushing his tail or pulling at his ears with a wry smile. She absolutely loves the nickname he calls her too: Tadpole. Kinda catchy.

Note to self: I need to enter some pictures of Naia and Lucian! I'm so lazy! And also of the little fishtank I bought Naia as a present (no hermit crab yet).

Dear Diary,

I assumed it was time to hand the reins over to Naia and let her keep her own section of the diary. She's grown quite a bit and is writing and reading nearly perfectly. There are a few words that throw her off, but I remembered what my Dad use to tell me, "Go look it up." wink Well, I'm off to get more photos developed (I'm so far behind!) so without further ado, here's Naia.

heart Naia's Journal heart

Mum gave me the diary to write in for the first time! It's exciting. Uncle Lucian says it'll keep me from bothering him for awhile at least. smile He's so funny.

Uncle Lucian moved in with us a little while ago. He's not really my uncle, but I just call him that. He calls me Tadpole. He really seems to like the fishtank that Mum got for me and watches it all the time. I don't think the fish like it too much though.

I can tell Mum feels bad a lot. I hear her talk with Uncle Lucian and Aunt Patch (she's not really my aunt either) sometimes about how she isn't pushing me to play with the other fa'e. Mum says she's being self-absorbed... whatever that means. Uncle Lucian says that all this time spent around adults and books will affect me somehow. I'm not too sure I understand why that is. I have a lot of fun with Uncle Lucian and Aunt Patch and Mum!

Aunt Patch used to be a pirate... but she says she's retired... whatever that means. (Mum tells me to look up all these words that I don't understand and I will, just not now.) She says that if anyone ever asks she never ever stole the Treasure of the Sierra Madre and put it into a trust fund for me.

Well, I'm tired of writing and Aunt Patch is babysitting tonight, so SUSHI! whee

Maybe I will go to the headquarters and try to play with the other fa'e if it will make Mum feel better.

heart Naia's Journal heart

Mum came home last night and was acting weird. She gave me a big hug and sat me down for a talk. (A talk is different than a talk in that a talk is much more serious. I don't like having a talk.)

She said she was sorry for the way she had been acting. And that it was up to me whether I wanted to meet the other fa'e. And that if I did there was one in particular named Arakel who seemed to have some stuff in common with me. She said she just wanted me to be happy and wasn't sure if playing with other kids would do that or not.

She looked so confused and tired. Poor Mum. I think she's a little scared of losing me. Just in listening to her talk (not talk wink ) about her family, I can tell that even though she's grown, she's still very close to her own mother. I think she wants the same relationship with me but isn't sure how to go about it. (By the way, I heard Granma tell Mum to raise me in her best judgement. I don't think that helped Mum out any.)

Aunt Patch tells me a lot of how Mum use to be before she found me. Mum staid to herself mostly and only had one or two friends. She read a lot and watched old movies, but basically in the background and felt more comfortable at home. (Aunt Patch told me that Mum's favorite movies were Sabrina--both versions.. I'm gonna have to get Lucian to rent them so I can see one night.) So I think Mum is also worried I'll turn out like her with so few friends and won't be happy.

I wish I could tell her that it's all okay and I'm not going anywhere. But it's kind of hard to put into words. All I managed to say was, "It's okay. I'm really happy the way things are." Then she looked all happy and sad at the same time, which was weird. And Uncle Lucian came in and told her to "buck up" and we were going out to the Marble Slab for ice cream. Uncle Lucian sure knows Mum's big weakness! smile

Scene: The Fa'e Headquarters. Many parents and children are inside, including Brina_Knight. She is quiet, just watching everyone interact when....

Action:

The door to the HQ opens slowly and a cautious head crowned with purple hair pokes inside. The owner enters (a little mermaid-looking girl), being carried by a red-haired cat boy with a faked sour expression. They stop inside the doorway, the little girl wrapping her arms tightly round the cat-boy's neck as she looks around.

"Mum?" she calls with hesitant softness into the foreign room.

Brina turns to look at the door. "Naia? What are you doing here?" Her eyes raise to meet Lucian's questioningly.

Naia tugs on Lucian's neck, bidding him to head for her mother. She shies away from the gazes of the other fa'e until she stops in front of her mother. Lucian leans down to transfer the girl from his arms to Brina's, and then he exits, tail swishing with mock annoyance at being used for transportation.

"I made Uncle Lucian bring me." Naia smiles. "I thought I'd find you here."

Brina returns the smile, holding the girl in her lap. "Well you thought right."

Brina watches Naia's wide eyes as she peers around the room quietly from young face to young face. Her grip on her mother's hand tightens from time to time as she takes it all in. Brina pets her daughter's hair with her free hand.

"Well what do you think?" she asks softly.

Naia peers around again. "We're all so different. How are we s'posed to get along?" she whispers.

Brina chuckles, "Well, baby, you're all kids. That's how."

The two watch quietly the comings and goings of people into the HQ. Occasionally one or the other will make a slight comment but mostly they stay silent.

One of the children bounces happily out of the HQ followed closely by her guardian. Naia watches the child exiting.

"That's Purr-purr," Brina whispers, by way of explanation.

Naia nods.

A new guardian enters, cradling an exotic looking baby, tanned dark and possessing large wise eyes. Naia looks at him, intrigued.

Brina (by way of explanation, softly), "That's the newest baby, Onuris. Can you believe when I got you you were that small?"

Naia gives a wry smile at the thought of her ever being that small.

The conversation passes on around them and at one point Naia is listening to Syrenrei talk absently. Her ears perk though, when she hears Sy ask about Riven's (one of the newer fa'e) abilities, his "Fa'e gifts".

"Fa'e gifts, Mum? What are those?"

Brina shrugs. "Not sure, baby. I haven't really hung around with the other parents that long. I'm not too sure what that means."

Naia frowns, her brow furrowing as she silently wonders. Do I have any gifts? Her mind immediately wanders to fairy tales and old horror movies.

Brina watches Naia go silent thinking deeply about something. She allows the graceful brow to furrow in contemplation for a few minutes before breaking the small girl's reverie. She pokes the child in the side and smiles at the bewildered look she gets.

"Hungry then?"

A nod.

"Okay." Brina raises her voice a little so everyone in the HQ who would like to know is informed of their departure. "Nice seeing everybody. Naia and I are off to get some lunch."

And the two exit.
Dear Diary,

I suppose I should give some information on Naia and her growth and how my little "family" has adapted to her oddities. Maybe I was neglecting to mention this because I didn't want to highlight the fact that she isn't a regular child. I treated her like one, and expected others to do so too.

Am I wrong in doing so? I can't help but wonder. She's rather scared of the other fa'e. I have come to grips with the fact that she is not a normal child, but how do I care for her as a fa'e? I act as her mother, not her Guardian (which is my official role) and treat her as my own. But in doing so I'm shutting off the part of her which makes her so special.

She says she's happy just the way she is. I believe that for now. But when she grows up and sees what she's missed out on, who will she blame then? I can already see the relationships she's failed to make with the other fa'e. She might find comfort in their presence.... She says she's happy, but ignorance is bliss.

Anya first brought the fa'e to me under the same terms as a shelter would work. I gave Naia a home and a name and promised to take care of her. I knew nothing of her background--I'm not sure Anya did either--and nothing of what I'd gotten myself into.

Naia had wings and I'd wondered, as she grew, if I would have figure out the mechanics of flight. It turned out my guess was wrong, and the wings were no more useful in the air than her scales were on the ground. Though, after our first bathtime I noticed how they rippled the water about her, playfully splashing and helping propel her. Like fins, I guess.

Naia also grew no legs, as I'd hoped she would. Below her navel (she does have one) her cyan flesh tapers into bright shiny scales and any sign of limbs is replaced by what looks like the powerful tail of a fish. This brought about a whole new set of issues.

So Naia has to be carried everywhere. She cannot walk, but in water is a joy to see. She can sit up fine, and even drag herself along the ground with her arms. Her upper body strength is growing tremendously. Soon I realize she will be too big to carry, and I am afraid at mentioning getting her a chair to move around in. I don't want her to feel alienated...

<sigh>

But despite all this Naia is happy and playful and a joy to have around. Her smile brightens my entire day and I am loathe to leave her to go to school or work. I just worry about her... a lot... perhaps needlessly. But I can't help but wonder what the future will bring and how it will affect that tireless spirit she possesses.
heart Naia's Journal heart

I went to go visit Mum at the HQ last night. I made Lucian take me since I can't go alone. Mum was sitting inside all by herself in a corner, watching everyone. Lucian put me down in her lap and left, grumbling about how heavy I am. smile He's so silly! I'm as heavy as I was yesterday and he didn't complain about it then!

The other kids, the fa'e, were all running around and being silly and having fun... but I couldn't go talk to them. I just felt... alone. So I sat with Mum and she pointed out people and made little comments.

Sometimes you can be with a person and it's all quiet and they won't say anything but all of the sudden you'll think "Wow! I love them!" That's kinda how it was with Mum last night, listening to her breathe and feeling her heart beat against my back. I wanted to hug her tight so she could never go away! She's tries to hard to give me everything.

One of the people at the HQ talked about fa'e having powers. Mum didn't know much about it. But the person made it sound like all fa'e have powers. So I got to thinking... Do I have powers? I haven't seen anything weird happen like in Harry Potter. I can't cast spells like in Bell, Book, and Candle. So am I the only fa'e without powers?

Not that it's that bad. I think if I had powers I'd turn evil... or feel really lonely since nobody else I knew had powers. Kinda like how vampires in the stories feel bad because no one else knows what they're going through? I kinda like things they way they are. Though if I could have a power... I think it might be to have legs when I want to and scales when I want to. I love swimming with my tail but it just doesn't work out of the water... and I can't go anywhere by myself... Either that or I'd like to be supersmart like Batman with all those gadgets.
