Welcome to Gaia! ::

I know that most commisions here on gaia are art ones, but quite personally, I must admit that I possess no special artistic talent sweatdrop I am, however, multi-lingual, and I am therefore willing to do translations as well as language lessons for people who need them 3nodding

Before send me a translation request, please show me respect by actually reading everything that I write, i.e. what languages I can translate to-from etc.

LANGUAGES I WILL TRANSLATE

I am willing to do the following translations:

-From English to French
-From French to English
-From Russian to English
-From English to Russian
-From Ukrainian to English
-From Spanish to English
-From Japanese to English

LANGUAGE LESSONS THAT I'M OFFERING

I am willing to teach the following languages:

-Japanese for beginners (these lessons will include writing hiragana, katakana, and some kanji on top of the grammar etc)
-Japanese for intermediate students (this will also include kanji lessons along with everything else)
-French for beginners
-French for intermediate students
-Spanish for beginners

Please note that the lessons I will be giving lessons in either English, Russian, or French (e.g. I may give Japanese lessons in French etc).

HOW MUCH DO I CHARGE?

How much I charge really depends on the size of the translation and the language. Here is a basic sketch of how much I charge: (langauge lesson fees can be found further down)

TRANSLATIONS

From English to French or from French to English

I will translate about a page (ms word, single spaced, font size 12) of text for 275g. If you need 4 or more pages translated, I will translate it for an average of 250g per page. So, for example, I will translate 6 pages of text for 1250g.

From English to Russian or from Russian to English

Same as for the French (see above).

From Ukrainian to English

I will translate about a page (ms word, single spaced, font size 12) of text for 300g. If you need 4 or more pages translated, I will translate it for an average of 250g per page. So, for example, I will translate 6 pages of text for 1250g.

From Spanish to English

Same as for the Ukrainian (see above).

From Japanese to English

Same as for the Ukranian (see above).

LANGUAGE LESSONS

All language lessons for French, Japanese, or Spanish that are explained by me in English cost 100g per lesson.

If you would like lessons in French, Japanese, or Spanish, and you want the lessons explained in either Russian or French, it will cost you 150g per lesson.

HOW LONG IS EACH LESSON?

Each lesson will include the following:

-A grammar section. This may include anyting from verb conjugations to how to make an adverb from an adjective etc.
-A vocabulary lesson. This will include everyday vocabulary such as telling time, days of the week, colours, etc.
-Some lessons, where necessary, will include cultural information on the country where the language is spoken.

This goes for all the languages that I am offering to teach.

On top of the lesson itself, I will also give you recommendations on dictionaries, grammar books, and anything else that you may find useful to learn your language.

If you are just beginning to learn your language, I will also explain pronunciation, and give you links to good sites that have insightful pronunciation keys for the language in question.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE BEFORE I GET THE NEXT LESSON AFTER THE ONE I GOT MOST RECENTLY?

That really depends on you. After I send you the lesson, you must send me gaia-mail back saying that you're ready for the next one. Also, you must pay me for lessons in advanced, i.e. you send the me gold first and I send you the lesson immediately after. You may pay for several lessons in advanced, or you may pay for one lesson at a time - it's up to you.

DO I NEED TO HAVE SOME TALENT OR GIFT IN LANGAUGES TO BE ABLE TO COPE WITH YOUR LESSONS?

Not at all. When you send me an application applying for lessons in the language you want, please tell me which other languages you speak, how well you speak them, and how much you know about languages in general etc. The language lessons that I will send you will be specially suited to your needs smile

WHY SHOULD A PERSON DO TRANSLATIONS? WOULDN'T IT BE EASIER FOR SOMEBODY TO USE AN ON-LINE TRANSLATOR?

Though I agree that on-line computer-done translations may be faster, in no way are they better. Want to know why? Here is an example:

For my example, I will use Spanish. Let's say somebody wanted to translate the famous 3 words ("I love you" wink into Spanish. "I love" is "amo" in Spanish (the pronoun is omitted because the conjugation of the verb gives it away). Now you need "you". When used in the accusative case, you is "te" in Spanish. This proceeds the verb. You therefore get "Te amo" as "I love you."

This does, of course, work. There's a catch to it though. In Spanish, "te amo" is rarely used, except for in some cases of man-women romance. Most of the time, however, "te quiero" (which literally means "I want you" wink is used - even when the love being expressed is between friends or siblings etc.

Now let's say that this person used an on-line translator to help them translate the 3 words. I know for a fact that more than half of on-line translating services would translate it as "te amo", despite the fact that "te amo" is rarely used. Of course, if the person were getting this translation to express more-than-friendly feelings for a Spanish-speaking person, this would be just fine. However, if "te amo" were used on a friend or relative, there might be some misunderstandings, as they would most likely think that the other person is expressing more-than-friendly love. And in some cases, that may even mislead people to believe that a heterosexual person is in fact homosexual.

This is one of many examples/reasons why on-line translations do not always work. But the basic idea is that on-line translations have no idea of what the context is.

P.S. If you did not understand what I meant by things like "verb conjugations" or "accusative case", do not worry. I know that most people probably don't know what those are, and my lessons will be much simpler than that, and will be explained in a much simpler way for anyone who needs it.

ARE THE LESSONS PRE-WRITTEN?

No, they're not. A new lesson is made available every few days or so. Here is the current breakdown of which lessons are available etc:
Japanese for Beginners

Lesson 1 - complete
Lesson 2 - complete
Lesson 3 - complete
Lesson 4 - complete
Lesson 5 - complete
Lesson 6 - incomplete, will be complete by Friday afternoon

Please note that the above only refers to the lessons distributed to the majority of students. The lessons vary for some students due to them having some previous knowledge of Japanese.
