Gambino - sunny and bright with a light whiff of burnt wood in the air. Cruising the Island town, you run into a young man, fresh faced and eager looking who hands you a leaflet before quickly moving off. It isn't until later, resting in the evening sun and a little bored, that you pick up the leaflet to browse through it.

User Image

Curious, you imagine that a visit to this place might relieve some of your boredom.

User Image

The shop itself is not particularly noticable, being plain and with only a small sign to announce its presence. Inside is clean and bright, the gleaming wooden walls covered with pictures and drawings of strange creatures. Beside the door, a small box holds a stack of leaflets like the one you were given.

"Ahhhh, Welcome!" comes a voice from the back of the shop. You turn to see a young-looking man with long purple-black hair emerge from a small doorway between two display cabinets. "Interested in the Aerandir?" he asks, moving into the main shop.

You nod your assent, and he continues.

"Rare species, we're trying to bring them back, we need volunteers to take care of the young ones we create, to look after them and learn more about them!" He looks down apologetically. "Forgive me, I enthuse over-much... It's just that they mean a great deal to me.

"Volunteering for this project is a great reward in itself. There are responsibilities, of course. We are a research project as well as a sanctuary, so you'd be required to keep a journal that we could study. However, it's not all work - the amount of satisfaction that can be gained from caring for such a creature is immeasurable.

"The Aerandir are smarter in some ways than humans (though they have a childlike innocence about some matters) and they can speak telepathically to those they touch. They pick up the speech of those who raise them as well as bonding with that person completely. Their society is a very developed one, and each type of Aerandir is suited to a different job..."

"Wait! Create? Skills? Society? So much information... all at once." Head reeling, you can only sit and listen.

"Yes, Aerandir are created. Even before humans came their method of procreation was very... unusual to say the least. They combine their DNA outwith their bodies by fusing parts of themselves. In fact, we've occasionally seen a fusing occur with parts of other animals, although this isn't always successful.

"We have done a lot of research and fieldwork, bringing together many artefacts left by the humans of the islands on which the Aerandir lived: necklaces, amulets, rings ... all made from Aerandir fur, claws, bones and other parts. Originally these were just archaeological finds, but after extensive research we realised we could extract the - for lack of a better word - essence of Aerandir, and mimic the breeding process to create Aerandir anew!"

He walks over to the wall of the shop, and stands next to a map showing a ring of small islands. He taps one of the islands.

"Currently, our operations are based two Islands, although we now own all of them due to the generosity of one of our sponsors. When we started up the project, we built a small tent village to house our research staff. Eventually, we built more permanent residences to hold equipment and supplies, and over the years our circle of tents has turned into quite a pleasant little hamlet.

"As well as the houses in which our volunteers and their Aerandir companions live, there's a community centre with lodgings for visitors, plenty of space for rest and recreation, and enough amenities to keep our staff and volunteers very happy indeed - all made from local materials, too, and as close to what we know of the natural habitat of the Aerandir as we could get."

User Image

Aerandir are a complex pet and as such require a lot of attention. To get one will take more than just gold. Each flatsale will have a small writing part involved as they are highly intensive RP pets. If you do not have time to RP with them a minimum of 1-2 times a week, then please don't try to buy an Aerandir.

Each Aerandir is drawn individually and may change based upon how you RP with them, the environment you create for them and (most visibly) which job they decide to take up. Each guardian will receive a large sized image for their journal and a small "tag" with which to link back to their journal. Guardians should have their Aerandir in their sig - Aerandir will benefit from being at the forefront of your "thoughts".

User Image

Aerandir can be customised via RP and via customisation credits. These credits were set up so that people could make the character just that little bit more personal and add touches of characterisation which might otherwise be missed.
Click here for more information on customisation.

User Image

General Rules:
1. Be kind and courteous to others in the thread at all times. This one's kind of a given.
2. Do NOT PM Alyosha asking for an Aerandir. Not only will the request be declined, you may find yourself on the grey or blacklist, depending on the situation
3. Aerandir may not be given away. Should you find yourself in the situation where you can no longer look after the Aerandir, Alyosha will find a replacement guardian
4. No hassling other Aerandir guardians for their Aerandir.
5. There are no refunds in any situation. This includes guardianship being removed for inactivity or misbehaviour, or guardians giving up their Aerandir voluntarily.

RP Rules:
1. You MUST make a journal entry at least once a week. If you fail to without giving due notice that you are away, your Aerandir may be taken from you due to inactivity
2. All owners are asked to at least try to interact with other owners. These creatures are all about RP. This includes group RP as well as solo.
3. No controlling other people's characters (or Aerandir) without express permission beforehand. Nobody likes words being shoved in their mouths. This also goes for Aerandir NPCs.
4. Aerandir are like humans in that they are skilled at some tasks and not at others. They should be realistic in that they will have both some flaws and some strengths.
5. Try not to stray too far outwith the boundaries of your Aerandir's job caste. An Aerandir may be able to perform some simple tasks outwith their job skills, but try not to take over another Aerandir's responsibilities.

Flatsale Rules:
1. Flatsales cost 13k each. This price is non-negotiable, although if you really want to pay more, then this rule may be bent.
2. Flatsales will usually last for 12-24 hours. Aerandir flatsales do NOT work on a first come first served basis
3. For a flatsale, a prompt will be provided. Those who wish to enter the flatsale must PM a response to the prompt to Alyosha. The best entries will be permitted to buy the Aerandir at the end of the flatsale period. The best entry will be given first choice of jars, followed by the second best and so on.
4. Winners select two jars - one containing a mammalian part, the other containing a feather. Note that there may be restrictions on which jars may be paired together
5. Species available during a flatsale are not disclosed until after the winners have chosen their jars. However, the jars will be available for viewing. What is in the jars will be neither confirmed nor denied while the sale is taking place.
6. Payment with items is not permitted for a flatsale. Only pure gold will be accepted.
7. The Aerandir staff have the final say in deciding the winners of a flatsale.
8. If the number of suitable responses is less than the number of Aerandir available, then we may not sell all the Aerandir at that time.

Auction Rules:
1. You may only state what you are bidding at that point - not what you could bid.
2. No intimidation tactics will be tolerated - keep the auction a fair fight.
3. Some items will be permitted for an auction bid. Item values will be given at the time of the auction . Add up your own bid.
4. Note that only certain items will be accepted as part of a bid. The acceptable items will be listed in the auction thread.
5. Unlike with a flatsale, the species available will be given in the auction information.
6. No sniping. You must make your intent to bid clear before the last half hour of the auction.
7. A prompt response must be submitted before you can bid. Only bids from approved responses will be acknowledged.

Raffle Rules:
1. Raffle ticket prices will vary per raffle. Prices will be given in the raffle thread.
2. As with the auctions, participants must submit a prompt for approval before being able to take part.
3. Participants may buy as many tickets as they wish.
4. At the end of the ticket buying period, a ticket will be selected at random. A screencap will be provided to show proof of the winning number.

Prompt

A prompt will be placed here at all times for people to reply to. If you reply you will then be told if you are eligible for future raffles and auctions!

Prompt:

Prompt: The little creature whose jar you have been looking after all this time finally springs to life in front of your eyes. It's new, curious and ready for anything. Write a little describing what you'd do / the first thing you'd introduce your new creature to.
Please send all responses to me (Alyosha) via PM.

Customs

Customs will now cost 500k (Angelic or Nitemare Scarves also accepted). You will STILL have to submit an RP prompt if you wish to gain a custom. A custom will be the only way for guardians to get more than 1 Aerandir. If a current Guardian wishes to have another Aerandir their original Aerandir must be at the child stage (minimum).

I reserve the right to refuse anyone a custom for any reason.

What you get to choose with a custom:
Type of Mammal
Type of Bird
Gender

You will still have to use customisation credits for anything else. Please noe that not all mammals / birds may be avaliable. Please also note that some combinations are unsuitable.

Some guidelines:
If there is a current Aerandir of a mix it will not be approved.
I prefer that mammals and birds do not mix if one is a carnivore and one is a herbivore. This isn't hard and fast but keep it in mind.
When choosing a bird to go with a mammal and vice versa, look at the neck length. An flamingo x cat is going to look silly whereas flamingo x girraffe looks almost natural.

If you are going to quest or wish to get a custom then please PM me and we can discuss it to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Journals are the place where you should note down all the things about your Aerandir, even if it's only to say they didn't do much. The journal will be deemed as your "Home" within the Aerandir community and should be treated as such. You are required to have a post with the details of your Aerandir's environment somewhere within that first page.

Also recommended are toys! You could make these yourself, buy them from others or have them gifted. Toys and other pets will stimulate your Aerandir and may help it develop. Being as complex as humans they need a lot of attention and things around them to help them grow mentally.

User Image

Aerandir are specialised in most areas of life, and jobs are no exception. Each type of Aerandir has a predisposition towards a certain job, based on their inherent abilities: strength, wisdom, speed, eyesight, and so on.

During the 'wisp' stage, as the intelligence and personality of the Aerandir form, it is guided by the need of the tribe to fill a specific niche. Each Aerandir spiritually bonds to the tools or environment in which they will work, drawing skills and knowledge from the collective memory of the Aerandir.

Traditionally, the task of overseeing the development of young Aerandir was that of the tribe elders. However, with such a young tribe, the task has fallen to the individual guardians of each Aerandir to observe their behaviour and strengths, and guide them towards a suitable vocation.

Artisan

User Image

Artist / Potter
User Image An Aerandir who is adept at art and pattery is generally one who will seek out shapes and patterns, colours and forms. They will find the world around them bright and full of things which they wish to recreate in some form, wether it be paint or clay. They also may get into the habit of adorning theirs and others bodies with paint. They can 'feel' colours and have a sensory range which is slightly outwith our own understanding.

Blacksmith
User Image A blacksmith Aerandir has a more profound knowledge of metals than their human counterparts. Not only can they feel the structure within the metals and know how to work it, they can also find metal within deposits. Their work can be both rough and fine, depending on the situation and they can generally carve and etch a little so that they are caapble of making finished peices. Blacksmith Aerandir usually only work in metals such as gold, silver and iron which are easily found.

Carpenter
User Image Similar to Blacksmiths, carpenters have an innate ability to find the structures within wood and mould them to their own purposes. They can do both fine, detailed work and more rough essential pieces. From chairs to beads, thse workers of wood know the right materials for each job. Carpenters, like all other artisans, are often called upon to create objects for other Aerandir to be bonded to.

Jeweller
User Image
Jewellers have an appreciation of many things. They are like artisans in their ability with colours and asthetics and like carpenters and blacksmiths in their ability to work with materials but Jewellers are much more generalist. Their abilities lie in patterning and working with materials which are for bodily adornment. Shells, beads, metal pieces, wood and so on are all brought into play when a jeweller has an idea. Jewellers tend to make so much jewellery that their comunity tends to be adorned with their works.

Musician
User Image
Musicians are one with the patterns of sound. They can mimic many natural sounds and like to create their own. From artefacts found it can be assumed that most Aerandir musicians preferred instruments which had a very naturalistic sound. Young musicians will often be found practicing their craft and may love to play their pieces to those who are around.

Weaver
User Image
Weavers are those who see patterns in things - much like their artisan brethren. They are not fixated on just cloth as the Aerandir do not wear much clothing, but weave baskets, nets and other utility products as well. Weavers have a skill not found in others. Simple weaving is not hard, it is the art of making something both sturdy and useful as well as beautiful that these Aerandir strive for. Any guardian should be wary of string and loose knit jumpers as these Aerandir also find it more easy than the others to apply themselves to knitted work or knotwork and may take examples apart to see how they were done.

Carer

User Image

Nurse
User Image Nurses are those who care for those around them on a general basis. They are not nurses as we see them but more along the lines of a village wise-woman or man, someone who has an inner knowedge of how the body works and what to do to alleviate pain. They often work with Medics to heal a wounded aerandir but are most likely to be the one who gives long term care or suggestions. these Aerandir seem to be born with the knowledge of how other Aerandir's bodies work and will do what they can to alleviate stress. They are also usually good listeners and wise, even when young.

Nanny
User Image Nanny is also not exactly the correct term for this kind of Aerandir though it's possibly the closest we have. These Aerandir hve a great interest in looking after their younger brethren. They tend to be protective and will look after all children, sometimes bringing them to the attention of nurses or herbalists if the need arises. They sometimes school children and will look after them if their parents / guardians are unable to for any reason. They are always willing to take in and look after a child.

Diplomat

User Image

Ambassador
User Image Ambassadors are like their human counterparts. They travel to the other islands, try to keep the peace, and settle large disputes. They act as mediators and contacts between different island groups and may life away from their home island for periods of time whilst communicating with others. These Aerandir are generally bright and bold, well preened and ready to work at all times. They are either bold and friendly or shrewd and quiet but always get the job done in the end.

Messenger
User Image Mssengers are, as their name suggests, those who carry messages. they will move between Islands, working with both ambassadors and other Aerandir. they may carry notices of events, letters for friends / family and sometimes parcels. Generally speedy and good fliers, these Aerandir get their deliveries made at speed.

User Image

Herbalist

User Image

Medic
User ImageMedics are Aerandir who know plants better than their contemporaries. they can almost sense which are healing and which are dangerous - even which tread the fine boundary between. They have an urge to help others with their potions and brews and will assist anyone in need of their medicines. Their ability though doesn't tend to help them when it comes to cooking as they know little of flavour or non-medicinal uses of plants. They spend a lot of time finding out about the toxic efects of their plants and may even try their hands at herbal insecticides if they have enough spare time.

Cook
User Image
Cooks are renowned for their great knowledge of which plants taste good and which do not. They only need to smell a plant and they can already imagine is taste and what flavours it might bring to other plants or foods. They are also attuned to other foods, not only the herbs and spices which flavour them, being able to bring out the best in any piece of meat or fish. Often they will ask other Aerandir to theirs just so they can prepare a meal and try out a new concoction.

Historian

User Image

Storyteller
User ImageStorytellers are the holders of Aerandir lore. They find it easy to memorise tales and can embellish even the most bare of tales until it becomes an epic. Legends and myths are their standard fare and they will devour any new tales told to them. When they are young, especially, they will often look for new tales told to them by their parents / guardians. Many sources should be made avaliable to them so they they don't get bored and use their abilities to tell 'tall' tales.

Researcher
User ImageResearchers have a love of knowledge which surpasses even spellcasters. They are inquisitive by nature and are willing to spend hours detailing the smallest thing in the hope that it will bring them more information about their favoured subject. The hope is that any researchers will find their own cultural background something they'd like to look into and will help the archaeoligists and human researchers along with their studies.

Hunter

User Image

Close
User ImageClose huners are slightly on the wild side. they are the kind of Aerandir who can cloack themselves in their urroundings and move with stealth, sneaking up on unsuspecting prey and pouncing upon the unwary. They are adept at killing quickly and cleanly with their own hands - perhaps with a hunting knife. They are always carnivorous and usually large in build. Usually though, as with all hunters, they need a little tutoring from an older hunter to understand the basics of tracking and luring prey.

Fisher
User Image These solitary hunters like peace and quiet when pursuing their prey and often use spears rather the the human methods of netting or hooking with lines - some may even be able to tickle the fish out of the water. Their ability to stand quietly and still for long periods of time when needed shows an inner peace and patience which might not be quite so pronounced in their younger stages. The seas around the Aerandir islands are bountiful and fishing appears to have been a highly productive means of feeding the communities who lived there.

Long
User Image
Long distance hunters are equipped with their bow, sling or bola and a deadly accuracy. Their strikes are usually fast and lethal and few prey species see it coming. They train often with their weapon and become masters of it whilst still quite young.

Spellweaver

User Image

Elementalist
User Image Elementalists are comfortable with their elements. Elements are generally strongly represented by whatever animals seem to make up an Aerandir though some may seem at odds. All of them will exhibit an inclination towards their element at a young age and may sometimes get themselves into trouble with their curiosity about it. Curiosity is a large trait amongst spellweavers and they may examine many things in an effort to get a better understanding of their element or general surroundings - all elements are connected afterall. Elements are not taken in the human sense and can be along the lines of fire, water or earth.

Shaman
User Image Shamans are heavily in touch with both the spiritual and physical. they sometimes are aware of things that other Aerandir are not and are able to telepathically communicate with other shamans through what they see as a network of threads connecting all parts of the world together. They care for animals and will tend to offer thanks for any animal killed so that they may eat, the same for any vegetable produce. They are the ones who get portents of disaster or happiness. They also are, sometimes, adept at making charms and spells almost as if they are a spellweaver of 'spirit'.

User Image

Beginning

User ImageAt first when the Aerandir artefacts are given to a new guardian they will be in seperate jars. They will remain so until that guardian has created a suitable environment (a description of their home in their journal) at which point they will be given the probability of their Aerandir being one sex or the other. They will be asked to provide a name to complete the 'adoption' process at which point the items will be transferred to a single jar. When they are in the same jar they will slowly begin to merge. At some point the glass jar will break and a shiny blue orb will appear. This is an indicator that your Aerandir is ready to become a gryphon.

Gryphon

User Image
Gryphons come in many shapes and sizes as the image shows. Some will have mammalian ears, some won't and each will be very individual. They will start to display their personalities at this stage and even the beginnings of their job attributes. Not all jobs are suitable for all Aerandir. An Aerandir's guardian willl be told which jobs are suitable for their charge when the time is right. Gryphons must be treated well and with love. It is at this time that they will begin to bond with those looking after them and mishandling may cause them to become withdrawn or anti-social. If a gryphon is seen to be treated badly, they will be taken into custody. Gryphons should be allowed to play with other young Aerandir.

Wisp

User Image
The wisp form is a very temporary stage in an Aerandir's life. Between the gryphon form and their child form they will take this one on until the prerequisites for their 'birth' are attained. All require objects which will become bonded to them before they can progress. Each Aerandir will be given a special item, one based on their job, to which they will become fully bonded. The effects of that item breaking or being destroyed are not yet known.

Child

User Image
Child Aerandir are like any other children. Bright, curious, and usually playful, they need to interact and make friendships at this age. They also begin to learn the skills they need for their jobs in far greater depth and, if the guardian is not able to teach them, a more experienced Aerandir might help with this. They will slowly begin to learn to speak, read and write at this age if taught. They do not have the use of their wings, though, the appendages being too small to support their weight. Note that some Aerandir will never be able to fly well depending on their species.

Adolescent

User Image
Like any adolescent, this time in an Aerandirs life is much about finding out who they are. Lacking the hormonal surge that most creatures get at this age (due to procreating differently) they do not get the mood swings you might expect. But, on the cusp of adulthood they find themselves questioning themselves, the world and those around them. They may be come distracted from their jobs whilst they explore other abilities.

Adult

User Image
At this age an Aerandir is ready to take on responsibility. It may take a special artefact to induce this form.
At this age they may take their own lock of hair or wing and create another though how this process works and why it doesn't always work is being looked into. If they do this, however, they will not be able to gain elder status due to caring for their young. This means that "breeding" or creating a new Aerandir is not limited to male / female couples.

Elders

User Image
No data has yet been found on the role of elders. We know they existed and were venerated in many ways. Information shall be added as it arises.

User Image

Q.Will the fluff and feather types be revealed to us before the flatsale/ auction /whatever or will it be a shockingly delightful surprise?

A. Fluff / feather types will not be revealed until after the owners have picked. I'm doing it this way to stop favouritism amongst species.

Q. How are genders decided?

A. Genders seem to be "random" *coff* which means they are assigned, really. this is basically to stop gender bias :O

Q. Why do you call it "fluff" when it's e.g. a tooth ?

A. Because the Aerandir are brought back via pieces we find archaeologically, many of the "fluff" items are other pieces of mammal which were more commonly used for charms, amulets and decoration.

Q. I'm assuming that this island is based somewhere on gaia, so the magic/technology state is variable from person to person, based on where they are from? Does this mean I can play my kitsune character or my computer geek half cyborg character?

A. Bascially... yes. biggrin We are based in Gaia so most characters are acceptable. I would prefer there were no ultra-super-futuristic characters and gundams probably would be able to only take two steps around the Islands.
User Image

Alyosha

User Image Alyosha is the main 'curator' of the Aerandir project. He began as an archeologist on the team excavating the islands and was allowed to stay on as an administrator when the choice was made to make the Aerandir a 'living' project.User Image

Rahujo

User Image
Rahujo is the eldest of the current Aerandir. She cuts an impressive figure: tall and muscular, with a single golden eye - the other having been destroyed by a stray metal shard long ago. Her steady manner and level head reflect her bison/raven ancestry.

Blacksmith and toolmaker by trade, she makes her home in the island's small forge, creating tools for the village and weaponry for Osero's hunting.

With a tendency to speak plainly and directly, Rahujo usually appears to be more at home with her sledgehammer and anvil than with humans or other Aerandir. However, she harbours a soft spot for Osero, who is the closest thing she has to a little brother.
User Image

Osero

User Image
Sharp eyed and athletic, Osero was created from one of the early attempts to restore the Aerandir race. The small tribe's pressing need for food gatherers led to the wolf/eagle hybrid developing the skills needed to become a hunter.

As a result, Osero has a close bond with his environment, understanding the ways of nature and appreciating the balance that exists. He is patient by nature, a trait that comes in useful when hunting fish for his tribe. He chooses to hunt with the spear, preferring it over all other weapons.

When it comes to interacting with other members of the tribe, and the guardians of the Aerandir, Osero seems rather quiet at first glance. The nature of his job is not a noisy one, and it reflects on his manner as a whole. He prefers to consider his actions as opposed to acting on a whim - afterall, to hunt successfully one must time their actions just right rather than just charging blindly.
User Image

Acia

User Image
Acia is the youngest, most recently created Aerandir. She is quite shy and prefers to spend her time working on her spellweaving abilities.
Her talent for manipulating rock and earth has been useful so far in the construction of the Aerandir settlement, where she spends much of her time.

Interested in the archaeology conducted by those searching for more Aerandir artefacts, she helps out, patiently working the rock and sediments around anything in a way more skillful than any human could. Because of this she tends to spend more time with humans than other Aerandir. In the presence of those she trusts she becomes less shy; there is a bubbly young Aerandir beneath her quiet shell.
