In the Breedables forum of Gaia is a shop known as the Gaia Maternity & Fertiilty Clinic - the GMFC. There, a talented staff led by Dr. Kamiki can do what even the admins of Gaia cannot... MAKE BABIES! These children can be the offspring of two Gaian residents or, as in this case, two original characters (preferably residing on Gaia in some way).

Okay, first, the Who. (Not, not the musical group!)

Who are you?
My name is Emperial, and I'm known on Gaia as RikProwley. I like to dabble in art and writing, even though it doesn't seem I'm going to get anywhere with either. I'm a production assistant, which means I work on movie and TV sets in the lowest position you can actually get paid for. But my job is almost seasonal in nature, which I like. I work a few weeks, the set ends, and I get a few weeks doing nothing but enjoying myself, drawing and writing. Then I repeat the process. As an artist, I work in two major breedables shops on Gaia, Feien Fairies and the GMFC. As a writer, I collect far too many diary pets and try to keep up with them all, usually failing miserably at both pursuits, but I enjoy myself well enough.

Who are Rik and Tory?
They're two of my characters from my ongoing fantasy novel-type-thingy. It's sort of an exercise in seeing how long and pointlessly I can write something, but it's lots of fun, and some day I'm going to go back and re-edit the thing into a viable novel. It follows the travails of a man, Daerinnid, in his quest to take over an island and become and evil overlord. Rikard and Torvwyn work for Daerinnid, more or less. Rikard is basically Daerinnid's best friend. And Torvwyn, of course, is Rikard's significant other, research partner, and better half.

Next, the Why.

Why does a staff member of the GMFC need a quest?
Answer: because I don't want to draw my own baby. I could, yes, but I like even better getting art by another artist. Besides, if I drew my own baby, it wouldn't be a surprise! And I like surprises. So I've decided to pursue a GMFC baby just the same as everyone else on Gaia does.

Why should we support you?
Because this is one of the only male/male pairings being quested for, and because I'm very close to having the means to complete this quest. I'll be the first to admit: there are other questors with a lot less stuff than I have. I have a lot of stuff. But... even with everything I have, it still might not be enough to actually win a GMFC baby! Auctions go for MILLIONS. The last one went for 1.7 million. The next auction is by the artist Anya, who has sold a similar breedable in auction for six million. But, um, I really, really, really, really, really love these characters, and I think they should have a baby! I'm willing to put nearly everything I've got on the line again, just like I did to get my beloved Zev, so that Rik and Tory can have a kid.

Rik and Tory are from an ongoing fantasy novel of sorts I've been writing on and off for several years. I had no idea when Torvwyn popped up in the story that he would become such an integral character; Rikard was one of the main three character from the start, even though he was not introduced in the story for a good two hundred pages. (Notably, the third main character has yet to appear after six hundred pages, but she will soon.) But when the character of Rikard met the character of Torvwyn... the two became instantly inseparable.

Their story takes place on an island called Keska, which is roughly the size of California, but more squarish in shape. The island is temperate in climate, similar to Japan, with forests and a great range of mountains in the north. Several rivers cut through the island, most notably the Serpent River.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

There are three major kingdoms on Keska. The first is Eterni, the kingdom of the dwarves, which lies beneath the northern mountains. The second is Loki, formerly kingdom of the elves, now more a kingdom of elves, magical creatures of various sorts, and humans. About 35% of the population is full human, 5% half-human, half-elf, 45% elven, and 15% various types of fae creatures. Finally, there is the kingdom of Kappa, predominantly human (95%).

Rikard hails from Loki. The majority of Loki is a great forest with elven villages and a few elven cities. Along the coast are the hybrid cities of humans and elves. Among these communities, magic is part of life. The cities are vibrant and colorful and reminiscent of Arabian folklore. The people in the coastal cities tend to be very tolerant of different customs and races, thus they find it very hard to understand the narrow-mindedness of the elves living in the forest (who hate all non-elves), the humans of Kappa (who hate all non-humans), and the dwarves (who hate all non-dwarves). The coastal Lokans are a diverse and very lively bunch.

Torvwyn, on the other hand, comes from Kappa. The land of Kappa is mixed forests and plains, with several cities. The kingdom is almost depressingly drab, with a large peasant class and rigid caste structure. (Comparably, Loki has royalty, but no strong class distinctions.) Torvwyn's hometown, Rakkel, is located in the center of the island, and is a major trading hub. Two major trade roads intersect in the city and the Serpent River runs straight through it. You can get anything you want in Rakkel. The majority of Kappa is very intolerant of non-humans, but in Rakkel they're a smidgen more accepting, provided the non-human in question is there to barter. Rakkelians love bartering above all else.

There are three major religions in the land. The first is centered around the nature creation goddess Mista. Mistans love the land and respect it, protecting and preserving nature, living in harmony with the world around them. They value life very highly. Theirs is a religion very similar to Wicca and Buddhism. Mistans are matriarchal, but there's no bias against males. The second group is the Trinists, who follow the Three. The Three are personifications of justice and order. Trinists value law and punishment. They are similar to Puritans in many regards. They see only one way of doing things, and anything outside of this way is an aberration and should be destroyed. They despise homosexuality and extramarital sex. Adultery is a high offense. This doesn't mean that such things don't occur, just that anyone who partakes in them deserves scorn, and sometimes a stoning. (Adultery is probably the most overlooked sin.) Trinists are patriarchal with a bias against females.

And finally Morgausites. Many years ago, Morgause ascended to the gods, and his followers believe in one thing and one thing only: Power. Morgausites are the ultimate self-empowered individuals, and their ultimate goal is to follow their god up into the heavens and become gods themselves. Being so power-hungry, there's really nothing a Morgausite won't do to achieve power, and their religion condones sex of all forms, murder, rape, and just about anything else that the other two religions dislike. If a Morgausite wants something, he or she is encouraged to take it. The religion is surprisingly equal in its treatment of the genders: Morgausite wives are entitled to do whatever they like, same as their husbands, and indeed, some of the more infamous Morgausites in the past have been women. Women take lovers just as much as their husbands, murder just as much, rape just as much. However, unlike the other religions, there are no real rules in the Morgausite religion besides don't knock on other Morgausites. So an individual Morgausite might personally detest rape, or adultery, or murder, and that's perfectly fine, so long as that Morgausite doesn't try to press his views onto another.

They're perfectly welcome to impress their views onto non-Morgausites, though, and usually do -- with a knife.

This is very important to understand because both Rikard and Torvwyn are Morgausites, but from very different environments. In Kappa, which is predominantly Trinist (85%), Morgausites are heavily discriminated against. The tenants of the Morgausite religion are almost the exact opposite of Trinism, after all. Morgausites who live in Kappa are very, very discrete. No blood orgies, no mass sacrifices, no major festivals of any kind if they can help it. They practice their religion in secrecy. (Mistans make up just under 15% of the population, with Morgausites taking the remaining 2-3%.) It should be noted that even though they keep their religion a secret, Morgausites are some of the most powerful people in Kappa, because they tend to be the people who are the best at gathering knowledge, wealth, and power. So Morgausites hold roughly 25% of the powerful positions in Kappa, and comprise 9% of the nobility. (They are never members of the peasant class, but excel at taking advantage of peasants.)

In Loki, on the other hand, Morgausites make up about 10-15% of the population, Mistans weigh in at 80%, and Trinists between 5-10%. In the coastal cities, the proportion of Morgausites is closer to 35%. There's no need to be secretive in these areas, and Morgausites take full advantage of that.

So Rikard grew up in an environment where he was able to practice his religion freely, and Torvwyn grew up in a land where Morgausites are heavily discriminated against. Additionally, Rikard is a born Morgausite, and Torvwyn is a convert who learned to follow Morgause by the example of his teacher and his (very secret subconscious) hatred of Trinists. It's no surprise, then, that the two have completely different methods of practicing their religion.

But being Morgausite was the first thing that brought Rik and Tory together and will always be an integral part of their relationship.

Family
Torvwyn has an elder brother, a quarter-elf named Aervwen, who is a woodsman in the service of the Duke. They share a mother, but look nothing alike. Aervwen takes after his father, with silky dark green hair and green eyes. His features are very fine and delicate, with a thin face and pointed ears. He is of average height with a slim, athletic build, and excels in riding and archery.

Torvwyn's mother was trained as a basket weaver but found little time to practice her trade during her life. As a youth she had an average figure which filled out considerably after her first pregnancy. Her face was round and sweet with a comely smile and dimpled cheeks. Though she was never considered particularly beautiful, she had pert red lips of perfect shape and was much the envy of the other girls in town for this. She was average height, with limp flaxen hair to her shoulders and brown eyes. After having an affair with an elf she was shunned by her family, and when her lover died she was left alone to raise Aervwen, making do as best she could with minor cleaning and sitting jobs.

Torvwyn's father was a baker, or at least was once a baker at some point in his youth. He quickly found his skills lay not so much in baking as in the management of the bakery itself. He opened his first shop at the age of nineteen and by thirty owned three very successful bakeries across town and found himself to be a wealthy merchant. With his thick head of golden hair, bold facial features, and sparkling blue eyes, he managed to charm the daughter of a minor nobleman. She bore him two children before expiring during the birth of the third and then, finding himself with two children (the baby died with her mother) and no wife, he quickly married Torvwyn's mother. She married him out of necessity: she was a single mother with nothing to her name and lived in poverty. He married her for the sadistic joy of having total ownership of another human. He enforced upon her a variety of rules: she was not allowed to visit friends (what few she had), she had to keep the house to a total model of perfection and cleanliness, she was not allowed to handle money or buy anything, not even the food shopping.

Grateful for having been rescued from poverty, Torvwyn's mother bore this without complaint for ten years. She cooked and cleaned even when pregnant with Torvwyn. Aervwen, being perceptive and bright, was horrified by this treatment of his mother and begged her to flee, but she refused for four years, and then she was pregnant with Torvwyn, so Aervwen fled alone to live with his paternal grandfather nearby.

Torvwyn takes his eyes and face shape from his mother and hair from his father. His build is similar to his mother's before her pregnancy, and like her he has little body hair outside of the mop growing on his head. This runs in his mother's family. He has his mother's smooth, milky skin, but his father's thick hands and feet. His lips are his father's, too. His nose is from his mother, rounded and blunt, but with traces of his father in its length and height. When he smiles, he has one dimple, and Aervwen calls this their mother's gift, for it is that happily dimpled smile which reminds Aervwen of their mother the most.

Quote:
sssss"Thank you for not making a scene," Torvwyn added.
sssss"Do I get a reward?"
sssssThe tiniest smirk tugged at the corner of Torvwyn's mouth. "Here, in the doorway?" he asked, sounding amused.
sssssRikard's grin was suitably devilish. "Doesn't the thought give you a thrill?"
sssss"Yes. The thrill of possibly losing my job, and-- mmfgh!"

History
Childhood

Torvwyn was his mother's second child and his father's fourth. For the first six years of his life, he lived almost constantly at his mother's side, helping her with her chores. He was a sweet boy, but to his father's dismay, showed no interest in business or swordplay. He was more at home with his nose in a book and was an avid reader from a very young age. With his father being so rich, Torvwyn had the privilege of a private tutor during these early years.

When Torvwyn was three, his mother first began to get sick. At first it was small things, like headaches, dizziness, and cramps, but these soon became fatigue, nausea, fainting, and eventually seizures. Through it all his mother insisted on continuing her daily work, and little Torvwyn helped her as best she could. She hid her sickness from her husband for as long as she was able, making excuses and explaining every ailment away, but eventually she collapsed. A doctor was brought, but there was nothing that could be done.

For the last six months of her life, she was bedridden as a "wasting disease," likely some form of cancer or tumor, ravished her body. She became a thin and frail skeleton, a shade of her former self, but through it all she only ever smiled. Torvwyn kept by her bedside day and night while his father went gallivanting and carousing. He had cheated on his wife several times in secret but now felt he could do so freely, offering the excuse that his wife would be dead soon anyway.

During this time, Aervwen's visits to Torvwyn and their mother grew fewer and far between. He had trouble dealing with his mother's decline and spent a great deal of time traveling the world of the elves looking for cures. But no elf would deign to help a half-elf's human mother, and those who would have did not possess the knowledge to save her. When Torvwyn was six, his mother breathed her last breath. She died at home with Torvwyn at her side.

After that, Aervwen came and took Torvwyn away from his father, who he now despised and blamed for their mother's death. Aervwen found work in the employ of the duke as an apprentice ranger, and begged them to consider Torvwyn for a position in the library. Torvwyn became a library clerk and assisted the great scholars of the city.

One of those scholars took a liking to the young boy, who reminded the old man so much of himself in his youth, and set the boys up in a nice house near the castle. Torvwyn became his protegee.

Quote:

quote

Youth
Torvwyn learned from the scholars in the library for several years, gradually being promoted higher and higher. Torvwyn learned more than just scholarly pursuits from his master: the old man was a secretly practicing Morgausite, a religion which values power and displays of power above all else, and Torvwyn was trained as a Morgausite acolyte to participate in the various rituals. Because of the past actions of the infamous Morgausite Telrik the Terrible, who raised an army of goblins and attempted to take over Rakkel, the rituals practiced by the Morgausites of Rakkel were not as bloody or grisly as their brethren in other parts of the island. Still Torvwyn always threw up after any of the rituals involving blood and sacrifice.

Torvwyn's benefactor died when Torvwyn was fourteen and left all of his possessions to the promising young scholar (he had no children and greatly outlived his wife). This placed Torvwyn in the possession of a house and a good deal of money, particularly after selling off those possessions for which Torvwyn had no use. He kept his masters books and journals and several pieces of furniture.

Life from this point on was good for the two brothers. Each excelled in their occupations and were favorably recognized by the duke for their achievements. Torvwyn earned his own private office in the library when he was seventeen. Aervwen was given charge of a quarter of the duke's forests to the north.

And then, when Torvwyn was nineteen, he first met Rikard Prowley.

Torvwyn had by this point had three previous relationships, the first with a female and the latter two with men, and knew he preferred the latter. The Morgausite faith sees nothing wrong with homosexuality, or sexuality of any kind, and Morgausites are often renowned for their bizarre fetishes and sexual practices. (Outside of a preference for men, Torvwyn's sexual practices fall into a very normal zone, making him a bit of an oddity among Morgausites.) His first meeting with Rikard did not suggest that there would be any great romance in the future: they discussed runes and books and found they had several interests in common. Torvwyn was impressed by Rikard's knowledge of obscure ancient runes and invited him to help with a project for the duke. Both found the other easy on the eyes, but not immediately intimately desirable. Torvwyn thought Rikard was a bit outrageous and much too skinny, and Rikard thought Torvwyn was too naﶥ and unambitious.

But as they worked together on the rune project, they established a rapport which grew into a friendship, then a dependency, and finally love. Rikard eventually found Torvwyn's earthy nature endearing and labored to protect his naivete from the cruelties of the world. Torvwyn found that Rikard brought out braver and stronger qualities in himself as he served as much-needed grounding for his explosive partner. He still thought Rikard was too skinny. But each had, in his own way, decided that the other was a person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

Torvwyn's brother Aervwen was not supportive of the relationship. He disliked that Rikard was a classic Morgausite (murderer and sexual deviant) and felt that Rikard would lead his brother down a bad path. For the first time in nearly twenty years, the two brothers started too argue, and Aervwen moved out of the house. For several months Aervwen tried to break up the relationship, but his every attack against only strengthened the bond. Eventually Aervwen was forced to realize that he could no longer be his little brother's protector: that job now belonged to another. His little brother had grown up and there was nothing Aervwen could do but accept this and the fact that Rikard Prowley was now an integral part of Torvwyn's life.

Quote:
sssss"RIKARD!"
sssssRikard winced and then began to chuckle.
sssss"That wasn't funny!"
sssss"Aw, but c'mon, did you see the look on his face? Priceless!"
sssssTrembling with fury, Torvwyn's scrunched up his face and said, "That's none of his concern!"
sssssRikard stopped laughing. "Surely you're not ashamed of me in public?"
sssss"If I am, it's only because you are the most coarse, rude, inappropriate person I have ever met!"
sssss"Which is precisely why you like me."
sssss"No, no, no!"
sssss"Yes, yes, yes!"

Rikard and Torvwyn
Torvwyn and Rikard worked and laughed and loved together for two years. When Torvwyn was twenty-one, he began to experience headaches and dizziness and muscle aches. Just as his mother had, he found himself hiding this from Rikard, not wanting to hurt his loved one or force Rikard to be a bedside attendant the way Torvwyn had been for his mother. But there was no way to hide the vomiting or fainting, and Rikard was too smart to buy Torvwyn's excuses. Aervwen told Rikard what had befallen their mother and Rikard, for the first time in his life, placed the value of another's life above his own. He read through every book and text he could find looking for a cure. He begged for help from doctors and mages. But there seemed to be nothing he could do and each day Torvwyn grew a little bit worse.

Up until this point, Torvwyn had always felt that he loved Rikard more than Rikard loved him, and that Rikard, despite his protestations to the contrary, would eventually leave Torvwyn for some grandiose scheme. Now Torvwyn realized that as much as he loved Rikard, Rikard loved him even more. Torvwyn had learned strength and independence from Rikard, but Rikard had learned that true strength was something you found in another person. The thought of losing Torvwyn threw him into a panic. For the first time in his life, Rikard cried over the thought of being without someone, and spent every moment trying to find a way to stop it.

At this time, the duke's wife was also ill, and Rikard and the duke, Daerinnid, found a single glimmer of hope. There existed on an island far to the south a "forgotten goddess." None of the remembered gods or goddesses would help the two men, so they decided to seek out this forgotten one. With great reluctance, Rikard left Torvwyn's side, and promised to return with a cure.

In Rikard's absence, Torvwyn was cared for by his brother. Aervwen was finally forced to confront the terrors of human disease, which his quarter-elven body would never experience, and atone for not having been at his mother's side when she died.

By some miracle, Rikard's quest actually resulted in a cure for Torvwyn, but it was too late for the duke's wife, who died before the duke could even reach the goddess. Rikard returned and joined his lover once again, greatly matured by his adventure.

As the duke's advisor, Rikard was called upon to help with the raising of the duke's children, and this created in Torvwyn a great longing. He would have loved to have a child for himself and Rikard to raise, a child of their own. Then Rikard told Torvwyn that a chance existed in the realm of Gaia. Furthermore, Rikard had an obligation to propagate his family line, but he only wanted to do that with Torvwyn. He said, "You are my better half, and I think any child of mine is going to need that." The two decided that they were ready to embark upon their greatest adventure yet.

sssssIt took a moment, but Torvwyn finally snapped into action. "H-hey! Don't do that again! We could have been seen, and I would have been kicked out! And you, you would have had your illustrious family background revealed and been promptly dragged off for public execution by the lynch mob." He waved an arm around wildly; his other arm was carrying the books.
sssss"But we weren't seen," pointed out Rikard, "and I doubt any old lynch mob could take me down. I've already got a contingency plan in the event something like that happens."
sssssAgape, Torvwyn shot back, "Has it ever occurred to you that most people don't need contingency plans like that?"
sssssRikard laughed. "I'm not most people. Most people are ****ing idiots, and while I'll confess to the former, if you call me an idiot I'll be most offended. Why, I'm the greatest analytical mind this island has ever seen, and-- hey! Where do you think you're going?" demanded Rikard, for Torvwyn had walked off.

Hometown: undisclosed small town, Kingdom of Loki, Keska
Hair: medium brown
Eyes: green
Height: 5' 7" (claims 5' 8" wink
Weight/Build: ~115 lbs.; very skinny
Notable features: maternal grandfather's nose, mother's fineness of feature, but his father's hair color and hairline, and his father's eyes; long sideburns cut to a point across his cheek which must be shaved at least once every other day to maintain a clean appearance

Quote:
sssss"If anything, you're starting to look like a drunkard, too. Is that a hint of red I see on your face?" Torvwyn leaned forward, pretending to inspect Rikard's nose and cheeks.
sssssStirred to action at the perceived insult, Rikard leapt to his feet. "How dare you imply my perfect complexion has been marred! I intend to live off this handsome face!"
sssss"Which part of it? You might have a nice complexion, if you ever went outside. You might have nice eyes, if the dark rings from your bizarre sleeping schedule ever lift. And you're too thin. Bony, even."
sssss"At what junction did you have the occasion to admire my eyes?" asked Rikard bemusedly. Torvwyn blushed so furiously that Rikard actually fell over laughing.

Appearance
Rikard is thin. Not to the point of emaciation, but he's really not far from it. He burns off fat very quickly (I know a lot of us would love to have this problem!) and the situation is only exacerbated by the fact he doesn't sleep or eat very much. His face is exceedingly delicate, with high, strong cheekbones, pointy nose and chin, and lips chiseled by the gods. (Voted Best Kisser at the university three years running. There were some complaints that he took this award a little too seriously.) Given his deathly pale complexion, the word "statuesque" is appropriate.

He frequently has rings around his eyes from staying up all night reading. His medium brown hair, which varies in shade depending on when it was last washed and the humidity, is wispy and cut very short, almost a buzz. His most prominent features are his sideburns. They extend halfway down his cheek and are cut horizontally at the bottom, accenting his cheekbones. Rik trims them very carefully. He loves the things.

Rikard dresses fashionably for his station, preferring robes of red, brown, and gold. Red is his favorite color; he usually wears a sleeveless red or maroon robe over longsleeved tan or mocha tunic. His clothing is perfectly appropriate for a scholar and his eye for things with strong accents and details make him stand out among his peers, most of whom wouldn't know fashion if it were forcefed to them, though they might very well note it as "stringy and tough on the digestive system." He shies away from black -- nothing is more passe for an evildoer -- and occasionally wears whites or off-whites, provided there's plenty of red present. Rikard takes great pride in his appearance (he is, after all, a narcisscist) and his clothes and careful grooming reflect that.

quote

Personality
Uncontrollable, unethical, unprincipled, unscrupulous. Rikard is your typical abrasive, scholarly genius of a homicidal maniac. ... Okay, so there's not very much typical about him. Quick to react, loudmouthed, impulsive, but at the same time meticulous, determined, and brave. There's no easy way to sum him up. (This is an exercise in futility.)

Everything Rikard does he does in excess, from his scholastic achievements (youngest graduate at the university, expert in a variety of fields) to his theatrical killing productions, timed to coincide with major Morgausite holidays. He blows things completely out of proportion. Wrong him in the slightest way and he'll make it his number one priority to pay you back and then some. He doesn't just talk, he yells, demands, and preaches. Loudly.

Torvwyn is quick to counter with Rikard's better points. Rikard's an absolute genius when it comes to ancient history, runes, archaeology, and religion, among other things. He's efficient at everything except speaking (since his long diatribes are generally a waste of time and air and he's terrible at giving prepared speeches). When action is required, Rikard's generally the first to stand up. He's a workaholic with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He's well-read and intelligent.

At the same time, he's perpetually foul-mouthed and crude. Other peoples' vices are his personal virtues. His sexual appetite is humongous. There isn't a single maid in all of the castle that hasn't fallen into his able hands. His exploits are the source of urban legends. ("Nonsense, you can't really do that with a ferret!" Oh, if only they knew.) To his credit, he's never forced anything sexual on anyone who wasn't willing to participate, as he believes everything about sex should be pleasant.

Sadly, I really can't convey the entity that is Rikard in a few short paragraphs, or even a few long ones. Knowledge and learning are important to him. So are sex, blood, and booze. And, surprisingly enough, so is Torvwyn. Most ordinary people would probably find Rikard obnoxious, infuriating, and utterly repulsive. Luckily, Rikard's surrounded himself with some extraordinary folk.

Quote:

quote

Family
Rikard is the son of the infamous Telrik Prowley the Terrible. When Rikard was very, very young, his father, a Morgausite priest and scholar, convinced a horde of goblins to follow him and terrorized the central part of the island of Keska. He eradicated whole towns, performing a "moral cleansing" to rid the island of Trinists.

It must be noted that while they were very successful Morgausites, Rikard's parents never sought companionship outside of each other after they married. This wasn't due to any idea of the sanctity of marriage, but simply because each loved the other very much and had a very healthy sex life. It was from their healthy relationship that Rikard formed his personal religious practices: he does not rape, because he feels that sex should always be something enjoyable. So as much as you will soon conclude that Rikard is a very terrible person, you can at least take comfort in the fact that he is not, has never been, and never will be a rapist. Murderer, liar, cheater, foulmouthed b*****d: yes. But not rapist.

sssss"I don't see that anything worked! You didn't present any new information!"
sssssRikard raised a finger into the air. "Aha! But that's the genius of it. All I had to do was give him a lot of information, and he couldn't tell the difference!" Rikard dissolved into laughter. "I used to do that back at university! I'd come into class and not have done any new work, but since my old work was so thorough, most of the professors bought it! And it was total bullshit! I could've told him all of that at week one! But!" He straightened and held his chin high. "Of all the professors I had, my favorite was the one who, after being inundated with the basics, replied, 'Yes, that's very nice, but what was the point?'" That triggered another bout of laughter.

sssss"Hmph," snorted Torvwyn, pulling the body towards the door. Rikard, naturally, tried to pull it towards the kitchen. "What are you doing? We have to get him outside!"
sssss"You want to be seen dragging a body into the street at this time of night? What will the neighbors think?"
sssss"You certainly can't take him into the kitchen."
sssss"Oh, good point. I'll go get a knife and bring it here. I didn't think you'd want a bloodstain on your antechamber carpeting, though."
sssss"RIKARD!"

Rik and Tory's relationship is a strong, stable one, coming up on five years now, and they are an exceptionally devoted couple. They do almost everything together. Though they are both scholars and Morgausites, their strengths and weaknesses are very complementary. Rikard provides spontaneity and fun, Torvwyn provides boundaries and stability. Each has taught the other a great deal about life and practical matters: Tory taught Rik to cook, Rik taught Tory to speak Goblinese. Every day of their life is a bit of an adventure and the pair is noted for their willingness to embrace all of life's challenges and unravel the mysteries of the world.

Of course, as stable and loving as their relationship is, they do argue about a great many things. With Rikard's explosive nature, it's unavoidable. But their scholarly backgrounds make arguments peaceful affairs, more like debates, even when a "debate" ends in one of the two storming off with annoyance. Rarely do arguments escalate to that point, and such problems are quickly resolved, often within hours, after the upset party has been given the chance to go and sulk. (Both Rik and Tory are really quite sensitive and really require good sulks for mental health.) Then apologies are traded. The two can never stay mad at each other for long. Even when one tries, he just spots some endearing quirk of the other and forgives immediately.

Quote:
sssss"This is your biggest discovery yet, Torvwyn. We must do something!"
sssss"If I could just have a quiet evening at home with tea and a good book, I would die of happiness."
sssss"How about getting drunk, finding good whores, and a life of discontent?"

Finances
Though Rikard comes from a very illustrious and admired Morgausite family, it is actually Torvwyn who controls the financial bulk of the family. Both have salaries from the castle (Rik's is slightly higher, since he's personal advisor to the duke whereas Tory is merely Head Researcher) but Torvwyn has the wealth inherited from his benefactor and is considerably better at managing money. Rikard will get his salary and go out shopping for clothes or to auctions, and Torvwyn will get his salary, take out the amount needed for food, and place the rest into savings. Expect Rikard to buy all the furnishings and outfits required for the child while Torvwyn plans for the child's education and future.

Quote:
sssssTorvwyn turned to Rikard, all pretense of authority now gone from him. "Did I do the right thing?" he whispered.
sssssIt took Rikard a good moment to answer. "You're asking the wrong person. I wouldn't know the right thing to do if the gods put labels on everything reading 'right' and 'wrong.' But I think you did the harder thing, and that's worth quite a bit in my book."

Morals
It's quite clear that any child raised in this household is going to have a very interesting set of morals. Religiously, there are no restrictions, really, besides have a certain amount of respect for your fellow Morgausites. Rikard brings to the mix his views on sex (only ever enjoyable, never rape, and the subject is somethidg to be openly discussed), and Torvwyn brings more of a normal set of morals: murder is generally not good except in self defense, stealing is wrong, cheating is wrong, don't drink to excess, it's generally better to tell the truth. Since even Rik recognizes that Torvwyn's morals are more appropriate for a child, it's likely Tory will be in charge of most of the rules and morality, but Rikard -will- be teaching the child to murder just as any good Morgausite child should be taught, and just as his mother taught him. But not until the child is at least thirteen. Murder in honor of Morgause is a rite of passage and marks the ascendence into adulthood. And Rik does have rules about it: murder people who aren't required by society, or who are Trinists. (In Rikard's book, atheism is preferable to Trinism!) Murder when there's a reason for it, like the high holidays. And always control yourself and cover your tracks. Morgausites who get too frenzied with their murdering are too often caught and executed by mob.

No matter how apparently awful their religious practices and tolerances may seem to be, there is one thing Rik and Tory take very seriously: apologizing when you've done something to hurt a loved one or authority figure. The first type of apology must always be sincere; the second can be faked as necessary (Rik's rules, obviously). As Tory puts it, anyone can hold a grudge, but it takes a strong person to be able to apologize, and you can apologize without compromising your position or appearing weak.

Additionally, both Rik and Tory were raised in respectable houses and value manners, Torvwyn moreso than Rikard. Civility and politeness make it much easier to get ahead and obtain your goals. A simply thank-you takes only a second, but can leave a good impression in someone's mind that lasts a lifetime. And as Rik notes, "It makes your henchmen cooperate a helluva lot easier." This being perhaps the only piece of wisdom Rikard has ever actually taken to heart from his duke, Daerinnid.

Swearing... Rikard swears. A lot. He feels that swear words are necessary to properly convey the true breadth of emotion in the human language. Torvwyn thinks swear words are for using when you lack the intelligence to come up with anything better. Granted, Rik uses his swear words in very creative combinations that show a true linguistic gift in the area, but Torvwyn feels anything you can convey with swearing can be conveyed equally well and in a more acceptable fashion without swearing. Expect the issue to be an early argument.

Education
In this respect, the Prowley-Eprinmaierson household is worth admiring. Being scholars, Rik and Tory value education highly and will make sure their child has the best. Private tutors will be arranged and curiosity will be rewarded. Both Rik and Tory see every day as a chance to learn and will hopefully pass this along to their child. Magical and religious training is a certainty. And, uh, who wouldn't want to miss the Rik Prowley Sex Ed lecture series?

Quote:
sssss"Maybe after we get rid of the assassin in my antechamber?"
sssssRikard blinked. "Antechamber? You call this an antechamber? This is a foyer if it's anything."
sssssFlabbergasted, Torvwyn sputtered, "I refuse to have an argument about this! It's my house, so if I want it to be called an antechamber, it's an antechamber."

Residence
Though Torvwyn owns a very nice house in Rakkel, Rikard will probably request they move to Gaia to be closer to the clinic. He does work at the clinic, after all, and would want to have easy access to the clinic for the child's benefit. The medical establishment of Rakkel is a good couple hundred years behind what exists on Gaia... The two will need to go house shopping and buy a new residence, probably outside of the main cities as Torvwyn has never been to Gaia before and would probably find the populace frightening, and Morgausite religious practices don't lend themselves well to having neighbors.

Quote:
sssss"I've been doing some side research," Torvwyn confirmed. "You can't say it doesn't have at least some application to what we're doing. I can't keep using rune magic on you; we don't know what the effects of long-term usage might be."
sssss"Torvwyn, you're a--"
sssssRolling his eyes, Torvwyn supplied, "A genius?"
sssssRikard took a step back. "Well, there's no need to get uppity about it. A little humility wouldn't hurt."

Custody
In the extremely, extremely unlikely event of a split (if they were going to split, they really probably would have by now), I suspect Torvwyn would keep the child if s/he were young, and if older, it would be the child's choice. But, Rik and Tory have about as much chance of splitting as apple and pie.
