Title: Cake and Cacophany
Date: 05.27.05
Location: Silva Regia Tower
Participants: Sajhiri, Rebecca, Naeva, and the rest of the Menagerie.
The Scene:
Rebecca blinked her large blue eyes as the child beside her began shrieking in what sounded like sheer terror. Naeva had been just fine a moment ago, now she was wailing like a banshee.
The family was celebrating the one year anniversary of Sajhiri's rescue of the fey King from an ancestral curse. Everything had been a great and merry experience. Rebecca and Naeva had been settled into a double highchair at the table and were happily playing with cheerios on the plastic tray. She felt warmly content, and rode a wave of excitement built by the noise level of the party itself. They had spent the afternoon being cooed at and adored by the friends of her seraph mother who had attended the celebration. She'd even giggled when Naeva managed to tie Saevire's tail in a knot around the back of the chair the Aduthule girl had been sitting in beside the two infants. The resultant shrieking was a great accompaniement to the drumming she did with her hands on the tray top.
Then Sajhiri had carried a cake out of the kitchen and set it on the table not far from the them. Suddenly Naeva screamed, startling the guests with the sound's intensity and fear. Sajhiri rushed to her side and scooped her out of the chair, carrying her into another room to check and see if she was injured. She was weeping and whimpering in Sajhiri's lap. The seraph did everything she could to soothe her, stroking her back and rocking her in a chair until at last, the child cried herself to sleep. Little Rebecca whimpered where she'd been left with the party guests and Menagerie in the dining room, worried for her beloved sibling.
This was not the first time Naeva had screamed. It had happened several times, and Rebecca could not understand why her sister was so quiet most of the time, then suddenly, violently loud. The child stared sullenly at her cheerios. They weren't as much fun without her sister to share them. She pushed them dully around on the tray until a piece of heavily frosted cake was set in front of her.
"Gweeeeep!" She declared happily, and forgetting all else, proceeded to gobble the sugary confection, making a mess of herself and the chair in the process.
