Welcome to Gaia! ::

I think its time we had another one of these.

If you are unaware, the C&T State of the union is for all uses who come by(IE, not just regs) this forum to post their opinions on how the forum is doing, what we should do to improve it, and what is going on that is detrimental to the forum.

I have a few points I would like to raise, in no particular order, except for the first one, which involves the poll, plus is traditionally why this type of thread is made.

1. Do we Need a new mod or two?

Well, do we?

My opinion on this is that while Sisk, and Xeon are doing a dandy job in and out of C&T, Twist is on a slight hiatus that he needs due to life issues. But in his absence, I feel we do need one more person to help share in the workload.

I also think we should have at least one person on a night shift of sorts, to take care of matters that arise durring the night, because idiocy knows no time. I would have made this a Poll option, but I felt it would spread it out too much.

Oh, this is not the place to campaign for or recomend who you think would be a great mod and why, unless Sisk or Xeon or Twist say differently on the later.

2. "What I learned"
There was a slight misconception that it was a "Regulars Only" thread. As the topics creator, this is untrue. Yes, the regs gather there, but if a new person comes along, that is fine. They need not be a reg to post, as long as they are being decent. If they are not, being decent, contact one of our mods if possible. It isnt that hard... which brings me to my third topic.

3. "Please PM a Mod to move this"
This, in the history of Gaia has never worked, unless it was a misplaced post by a reg, which is rare. If the thread is out of place, just PM a mod yourself to move it. Provide a link to the mod, and a breif explanation on why it needs to be move. Rule breakage, wrong forum, done to death, spam, whatever. We usually end up having to Pm a mod to move it anyway, so just take the extra 45 seconds and do it if you see it, please.

The same kinda goes for Sticky violations/repeats/etc. Yes, tell them that its in violation, and how it is so, but again, PM a mod yourself to get it moved.

And one more thing on this, multiple posts of different people all telling the poster the same thing are grossley not needed. If it gets posted at the same time or close to it, that happens, but we dont need all to say they are wrong, and why. This doesnt happen often, usually its just posts withing seconds/minutes of each other, but sometimes not. Just keep it mind, ok? This goes for both violations and general question threads, really, unless in the question, you are elaborating on what you or someone else said for clarification.

4. Flames
I am guilty of it. Alot of people here are. I do personally feel we need to tone it down a little. It isnt as bad as it used to be, but still I feel it is on the rise again. I understand we all have our off days, but try to keep a simmer on. As it says in the Stickies, Debate, not convert.

Oh, and for a few of you new people who I hope to see this: Sarcasm/jest does not transfer to plain text well. If there is a question if your post is a joke or not, you probobly shouldn't post it, or at the very least make it painfully obvious that it is a joke by use of "j/k" or an emoticon or three that can easily express that yes, it is a joke.

5. C&T PD
Keep it or kill it?

Im my personal opinion it should stay as a resoursce, or even a failsafe. When it was created, we literally had no local moderation, and it was desperatly need. Now, with 2 dedicateds and Twistex half here, it is kinda on the back burner, and just idle. I personally think it needs to be kept for the raininy day that will happen with the exponential gaia growth.

Working Version-
-----------------------

C&T is like most other question forums in Gaia. If you've visited Q&F, you have a general idea how it works. Except it's not with Gaia, and with computers. And every other thing with a speck of technology in it. Thusly, some new rules pop up from the woodwork.

1) If you don't know the answer to the problem, or at least some useful tidbit of info that could be helpful, Don't Post Saying You Don't Know. These are real people that need real help, not annoyances and the eventual arguments that will come when someone warns of the spam. And when someone warns, try at best to add in some information useful to the thread as well. Ten posts telling one person he's offtopic are just as offtopic as as the first. The best solution: Tell a mod or their minions and have them take care of the offending post with their swift as wind ninja skills.

2) NO CONVERTING. By all that is holy, abide by this rule. If someone has a problem with IE, don't tell them "Get Firefox. IE sucks." This is about as helpful as saying you don't know. Which is what it really is.

3) Flamethrowers holstered. If someone says something stupid, don't whail on them for it. Civilized is the name of the game. If the person just rants off stupid things, warn them first, either in the thread or by PM, and then, if they persist, report them to one of the mods or their minions for...handling.

4) We're not grammar nazis. Really. We're not. But netspeak and 1337 don't pass well with us. We like to read plain old English. Well. Modern English. Forsooth through doth this yonder window halt? Spyware, I doth decree, shalt be the pain of an eternity.

5) D2D. Done to Death. There's a list. If a thread is D2D, don't flame it. Just point them to the list, and report it to one of C&T's trusted purple-clad warriors against the forces of spam.

6) A good C&Ter always has links and facts when arguing something. "Macs suck!" Isn't a valid argument. "Macs suck because none of the new games come out on them!" Is valid. Back up with facts, not excessive !!!111!!!'s or pineapples.

7) Obey the Stickies. The Stickies are the stone tablets from the gods. No bumping. Use the GMail and site rating stickies. Be one with the zen of C&T. In being zen, it is also paramount to acknowledge the zen of the violet knights of C&T. To achieve this zen, it is oft-times necessary to give them sacrifices of the sacred mangos. (That and trout, but for some reason the trout seem to want to attach onto people's heads.)

cool Respect others. The dividing line between those who are respected and those who arn't. If you treat others like they know something, you'll get the same. Treating others like they are worthless without proof of such is akin to elitism. Which we're not. Really. We're not elitists.

9) An effective C&Ter learns something new everyday. They will research up some things sometimes to help, learning new things in the process that will help down the road. And not just from Google, too.

10) Gaia is for fun. Don't take things too personally. The entire point is to enjoy yourself. If the swarming forces of the inexperienced swarm, it be best for a warrior to go, gather help from amongst the populous, and return with the might of knowledge as his sword, and Google as his shield.

Please comment/add/change/revise these to make them better for the final version

Now then, this is widley open for discussion by everyone who wants to discuss it. I mean everone, as long as they are not atempting Jackassery. My thoughts and opinions are all over, even though it does sound like I am being a slight dictator at times.

If you have another matter that I missed, and you feel it merrits discussion, post it, and most likeley it will end up in the first post.
Just i do not wand any of new mod decapitated for lousy start. We need to give them a lill time.
1. Do we Need a new mod or two?
I personally think we're doing pretty well as a forum. As you've said Kir, flaming might be somehwat on the rise, but I feel that we do a pretty good job of keeping things under control here.

Truth be told, I really have no opinion on the matter. In the cases we do get misplaced posts and the like here in C&T, the regs and others typically do a pretty good job of setting the wayward person on their course. The post volume of C&T is comparatively small to forums such as ED, GD, the Exchange, etc. so heavy moderation isn't really required.

2. "What I learned"
Well, it's true that it's not for regs only, but that thread can be intimidating even for me... And I'm both a regular of C&T and a reg guild member sweatdrop

3. "Please PM a Mod to move this"
I have nothing to add to what's already been said.

4. Flames
I thought we'd been doing a pretty good job of keeping the heat off around here. Sure we'll have our off days (I had one and Sisk got mad at me crying ) but in general things are pretty cool around here.
... If only people would read the stickies gonk
The thing that bugs me, is high average time of mod's response in C&T forum. One or two new mods may address this issue well.

Dangerous Trader

1. Do we Need a new mod or two?
Gaia as a whole needs more mods, they might as well come from here.

2. "What I learned"
Nothing to add.

3. "Please PM a Mod to move this"
Nothing to add.

4. Flames
I'm much less guilty as of late.
1) I believe we need more mods, as Sisk and Xeon are worked to the bone, Twist is on medical leave, due to his lung, and even with all three of them here, we still have a fairly large gap during the hours of 0800 to 1400 GMT or so.

4) Flames have been on the rise, I agree that we all need to cool off a bit, take a deep breath before hitting the submit button, and ask ourselves "Is this the best way to word this?"

ParoX: You should drop by WIHL sometime, it is not all that bad.
Damn you, for reading my mind kiretsu. I was going to make one of these soon. wink

Just from what I've seen: WIHL is a bit intimidating to the newbs, and non-regs, but that doesn't mean it's reg only. That's pretty much what the guild is for. smile

Flames don't seem so bad, but a few spikes have been occuring. Holsters open, people.

The spam and general pointless BS is as always. Sorry I'm not jumping on it with my usual zest and fervor, but I've been out of it for some time now. Health and eprsonal issues have kept me from doing a lot of what needed to be done. I had and still have, to get my life in some sort of order. No, chaos is not a form of order.

whatever happened to all the wonderful "read the stickies" pics we had floating around here? I loved those.
We do need more of those. The poll shoulda been on that.

Oh, and feel free to substitute "no opinion" for "I'm only here for the lesbians"
Mmmm.. Lesbians.

Bringing it back, old-school.
As always, More Mod's is better, while who we have are doing an adequite job, there's a whole new level to be attained, and Yes, I'd like to see atleast one on the night shift that we can call our own, or atleast 3-4 gaia wide.

As for 2) Spot on, but anyone who comes in and sets themselves up for a fall(spamming, Flaming, or calling themselves a Reg after one whole days worth of bad posts and Misinformation in the C&T regular) should get it, not by everybody, but by atleast one or two people. and that Getting 'it' should be a PM to a Mod or two.

3 True, I'm guilty of this every now and again, but that's only when i'm seriously Pressed for time.

now flaming i havent done for a while, I tend to roast them slowly and let them stew in thier own juces.

Other thing I want to bring up is the number of Tech support threads in the TT subforum, and the not quite so Tech talk discussions that find thier way there. COuld it go on record that if you dont know for sure that your thread fits in there, then create it in the main forum(it'll get far greater coverage) and let someone suggest it to be moved over to the TT if it's worthy.

next is the stickys themselves, hopefully unkempt, and I was planning on redoing them, but then I came across another idea, the Wiki that i found recently is starting to take shape into what could be the most updatable and maintainable sticky we could have. and it makes no sense for us to have redundant copys when they will end up serving the same purpose or is there another idea that could be considered?
More mods are better, period. Sisky and Xeon get too stressed by C&T stuff.

WIHL: It's not regs only, but I feel you should show some IQ before posting. Arethic is the prime example. When he first came on I was a might suspicious of his fervor. (Reminded me of Twisty in a sense wink ) But after a bit he settled in, showed his Arethic-y might, and got inducted (Wordlessly, soundlessly), into being a regular. Now he's one of the team.

The guild: Remember the 1K fee. Steep. I've been thinking about cashing in 20K for a public forum for C&T goers just to chat. The C&T Lounge possibly. But hey, that could just be me and my never-ending quest to get my name plastered over Gaia like that of Lanzer and L0cke. xd

Threads/C&TPD: I think the PD is a good idea. Needs some rule revising. Maybe a tutorial on what to do about bad threads. Never trust the person making the thread. Half of the time they don't look at the thread after they create it, so it's a moot point. All that we'd need to do is just follow up. Ties in partially with having more mods, especially night crew. C&T Mod shifts. So that every day you at least see one mod who comes from C&T, even if they'll get swamped in other problems. (Minus rant on dedicated moderators not being dedicated to one forum anymore.)

-All of Gaia needs more mods, this is well known; we can only do so much as individuals.

- I am working on revising the stickies for C&T and adding a few new topics, as well as clarifying some old topics. Hopefully this will help somewhat.

- As for misplaced threads and flame issues, Kiretsu and Josef are the only two people I ever get pm's about things needed moving. I have said it a hundred times, leave me a message and I *will* get to it. Just because something is not removed on the spot, doesn't mean it won't get done. And its not going to kill anyone to have it sitting there until Twisty, Xeon, or myself can get to it, barring extreme posts like porn, or those delete these system files posts, links to warez sites, etc. Those I consider pressing and urgent, and should be brought to the attention of someone who can address them immediately.

When I think of more stuff to say, I will post it here 3nodding

Im curious... do Xeon and Twist get PM's from the same amount of C&Ters?

As for the rest of it sisk, Im not complaing about your talents, or Xeons or Twists (you seemed a little upity, sorry if I am misinterpreting) I know that you get to it, hence why you always wake up bright and bassy tailed to a PM from me, usually containing several links.

If it is a crisis, such as warez or the like I PM a purple who is online, that I feel can handle it.

I dont think anyone has any major complaints, other than you are not on 100% of the time for our entertainment 95% of the time and Janitorial work 5%. Become a robot or something already. Sheesh. wink
