DO NOT QUOTE THE FIRST POST! I WILL REPORT YOU FOR SPAMMING IF YOU DO!

Let's face it.

There are a lot of anime fans on Gaia, right? I mean, don't get me wrong. Anime is a great thing, but as the Greeks say, "All things in moderation."

For some time now, I have wondered: "Why are a lot of anime fans so quick to speak out against people with opinions different from their own?"

And that's putting it nicely.

There are two threads in particular I'm going to paraphrase from: One entitled "SAVE YOUR ANIME!", in which someone is speaking out against two middle-school journalists who just happen to write an article saying bad things about anime, and the other entitled "What if you best friend said,"Manga/Anime SUCKS!!!!!!", which is pretty self-explanitory.

First, let us look at this.

Quote:

We, the fellow lovers of anime, are being prosecuted by evil
journalism boys who think it's okay to rival the articles that PRAISE
anime.

Please help us on our quest to change this horrible article. Please
read this article, then email the school newspaper administrator with
your opinions on the article, and anything you might want to change
about it. Pleasse protect our anime from crazy
"we-hate-Japan-it's-stupid" boys. Please support our anime by not
using cuss words, and being very calm about this matter. (Even though
it stinks.)

Email this to all your anime-loving friends!!

The article: (I have removed the link here so as not to warrant any more angry e-mails.)

The administrator's email: (e-mail address removed)

Thank you for taking the time to support our cause!

Please, no spammity, cussing, bad words. This email must be suitable for all ages eek

Take a look at the first two paragraphs. A number of hateful terms are used here, including "crazy 'we-hate-Japan-it's-stupid' boys" and "evil journalism boys who think it's okay to rival the articles that PRAISE anime. "

Now, how narrow-minded would someone who isn't an anime fan find this to be? I mean, seriously. Is this what you want someone to think of when the words "anime fan" come to mind? I find it commendable, however, that the writer of this did ask people to refrain from being violent, even though it worked to no avail. Plenty of people who posted in the thread afterwards said things like "These two boys need to die for hating anime!" and "They should be shot! Anime is cool!"

If that's not bad enough, let's take a look at this next thread. In this thread, people were asked to their reaction if their closest friend was to say that anime sucks. To the civilized mind, there are a number of ways to look at this.

- Perhaps this person is not familiar with the intricacies of anime.
- Perhaps this person has an opinion influenced by outside sources.
- Perhaps this person is just closed-minded.

Here are some of the responses made to this hypothetical question. I've put some of the especially disturbing parts in bold:

Quote:
Well then they aren't my best friend anymore(and are no longer living xd )

Quote:
I would slowly, but painfully torture him until either death occurs, or he changes his mind about anime, but fortunately i know my best friend would never do that.

Quote:
I'd report them to a mental hospital DUH

Quote:
My friend did this once stressed
I looked at him stare and said: if you want to stay alive, get out of my face within the next 5 seconds...
He was like that eek when I finished.

These are just a few responses from people. In all fairness, there was a fair share of good answers, mostly those involving respecting other people's opinions, but I still find answers like the ones above a bit unsettling.

Now, some of you have been saying that "Well, it's only on the internet. It's all in good fun, right?" No. For those of you saying this, I have a real-life story brought to us by Oo_Miki_oO:

Oo_Miki_oO
The Anime & Manga Club at my school tracked down a friend of mine once. At lunch, my friend had said to the kids at the lunch table why he wasn't going to join the Anime & Manga Club even though he was a huge fan.

FRIEND: It's people like this that really burn me up. Going around with dumb t-shits and sweat bands and other crap they have. Theres more to life than Anime.

ME: I agree. It's people like this that give a bad name to Anime Fans.

Later, the president caught my friend right after school. I was there with him.

PRESIDENT: How could you say such things if your a true anime fan?

FRIEND: What are you talking about?

PRESIDENT: You know what I'm talken about! Saying bad things about us to all of your dumb friends!

ME: We were merely discussing how childish the Anime & Manga Club could act when they were mad.

After that, things started to get ugly. The president started to cuss at us. He said awful things that shocked my friend and me.

FRIEND: You know, your just proved my point.

The president sluged my friend. And of course, in reaction, my friend sluged him back. The guy backed off, then ran away.

Honestly, if this doesn't show that some people are willing to resort to violence for anime, I don't know what does.

In closing, I want to ask the question again: "Why are a lot of anime fans so quick to speak out against people with opinions different from their own?" Why is it that people who don't like anime are suddenly sub-human assholes who don't deserve to live? When did anime go from being a form of entertainment to something much more serious?

Any answers on the subject are most appreciated.

Because we can't handle the opinion of others. Whoever's opinion differes from ours, that means they're stupid. It's because that's what society teaches us, we don't use intellect, we use childish remarks to rebutal.
LMAO. I've asked myself the same question. Personally, I don't give a rat's a** about what 'anime haters' say. They hate anime? GOOD FOR THEM! As long as they're not sitting there spouting it in my face and damaging the anime that I own, I am perfectly fine with their opinion.

And yet, we expect others to bend to OUR will.

I call hypocrisy. confused
Same thing with Emo/Indie kids who think anyone who listens to P. Diddy is an uneducated neandrathal.

Note, some anime fans consider Inu-Yasha and Yu-Gi-Oh! to be TEH TOP ANIME EVURS!!!!11!oneone due to either.

A) Hot Anime Guys

B) Lewd/Potty Humor

C) Repeativeness so thier minds won't explode from complexity.

And, "Anime Haturs" usually judge Anime by the most popular/talked about animes (Such as, what a surprise, Inu-Yasha.)

And the large catagory of Anime fans are obsessive teenagers who are enthralled by flashing lights take this to a great offence.
Actually, I think the same thing goes for almost all obsesssive fans of something out there.

True, but I wanted to center on anime since this is A/M/C, after all. It's just a carbon copy of every other thing out there. neutral
we're just trying to protect what we love.

we're just trying to protect what we love.

Intelligently, great. But it's not protecting because it's just an opinion, nothing like burning mangas.
Someday, A/M/C is just gonna be one BIG forum full of rants and critiques of anime society, with the occasionally misplaced Inuyasha thread. Not that it's a bad thing, but, yeah, I'm just saying blaugh

Good post, Mireo. Your thinking makes me feel sunshiney inside.

Now tell me, how is threatening to hurt/maim/kill/etc. someone who shares a different opinion "protecting what you love"?
NK-1126
we're just trying to protect what we love.

So now threatening to shove someone who doesn't agree that Naruto is teh uber kewlness!!!11! into a microwave and radiate them is protection?

... is anime in danger? Did I miss something? sweatdrop

At least it does to you, it makes me want to gag. cool rolleyes
Heh. Considering that Gaia is composed of 10 year olds, I don't expect anything else. I'm sure if you go out somewhere and have a conversation with other anime fans, they wouldn't be as obsessive....Hopefully.

Good topic. 3nodding
