Welcome to Gaia! ::

A redhaired man in glasses, a shirt and tie hurries up, scribbling something on a clipboard as he runs. "Welcome to St. ChibiSchu's Hospital. I'm sorry we're still a little under construction and not quite open yet. Please don't worry about that man there." He points to a man nearby who's hacking and coughing into a handkerchief. "I'm pretty sure it's not SARS. Maybe the black plague, though. We're getting that a lot around here lately."

He takes you by the arm and steers you through the ER and deeper into the hospital. "This hospital is brand new, really cutting edge! We do research into all sorts of commonly-known illnesses, such as Ebola, West Nile and Influenza. We even have a few microbes that don't actually cause illness in humans. Oh, sure, we get the odd outbreak here and there, but what's a little contagion between friends, eh?"

Yes, this shop sells viruses and bacteria. Like the massive geek that I am, I spent hours on the internet, looking for electron micrographs of real viruses, then used them as a model for my lineart. These are real microorganisms that someone may have gotten sick and died from.

And I'm turning pain and suffering into a big joke, right?

Wrong.

This shop is meant to be fun, to be silly, and humerous. However, if you or anyone you know has lost a loved one because of an illness, my sympathies and prayers go out to you. If you find the content of my shop to be disturbing, no one is forcing you to be here.

Please don't flame me. I don't do this to hurt anyone, only to have fun. If you're upset, plaster on a big grin and say to yourself (silently, so none of us can hear you) "What a big a$$h0!e he is, I'm never coming to this shop again!" And leave.

If, however, you can take this with a grain of salt, smile and have fun along with me, I think it'll be a good time. Come on in!

User Image

All outbreaks (read: flatsales) will be announced here, long with the samples to be sold. If there's nothing below here, there ain't no outbreak! Any raffle and auctions will be considered special events and will be announced in the special events section below.

There are no Outbreaks at this time.

The following rules apply to all Outbreaks:
1. All Microbes in an outbreak are valued at 500g.

2. I will post a "Go" post at the proper time - and that's according to my clock, not necessarily Gaia's. I warn you, most of my clocks are off by as much as 15 minutes, so if I'm a few minutes one way or another, that's life.

3. Requests posted before the "Go" post will not count, but you can try again.

4. All requests must include the phrase "I want to catch <insert name or number of Microbe>" or it doesn't count. If you post wrong, you may try again, but if yours is taken by then, too bad.

5. This shouldn't have to be said, but you MAY NOT edit posts. You may try again by posting a NEW post, but you cannot edit your post to ask for a different Microbe, or to change a wrong request to the correct phrase.

This post is also dedicated to San, my Feien *snuggles her*

1. Please don't steal my artwork (besides the fact that I can't imagine why anyone would WANT to, I also can't imagine why I need to have this rule. Apparently I do). Please don't alter the images, either, unless you've obtained permission from me. However, if you want to resize, or crop it, in order to insert it into a sig banner, that's fine.

2. Flaming, arguing or whining makes you a moron. Please don't do it in this thread (or anywhere else, for that matter). Doing any of the the three things mentioned will likely get you blacklisted.

3. Direct-link your images, please, or your Microbes won't multiply and won't be able to breed. If you've vaccinated your Microbe, you can then move it to your own server if you wish, but you don't have to. I will host the images forever.

4. Please feel free to PM me with questions, unless they are already answered in this post. *points to the FAQ below*

5. Feel free to RP your Microbe in the thread...if you can. sweatdrop

6. Co-owning is allowed. As is gifting. If you're giving your pet to someone, you may PM me with who the owner will be. (Though I don't know if they'll be happy to get it)

7. Please don't give away your Microbe. Especially without asking me first. It makes both them and the recipient sad. crying

8. READ THE RULES AND THE FAQ! READ THE RULES AND THE FAQ! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSEQUENCES IF YOU DON'T READ THE RULES AND THE FAQ!

User Image

1. How dare you make this pet. You're an insensitive a$$h0!e and I hope you get leprosy and die!!!11!one1!

Thank you for your input biggrin *blacklists* This pet is intended to be fun and silly and I don't intend to insult anyone. Go read the disclaimer again.

2. Can I give you an *insert name of pet here* for one of your Microbes?!*

Uh, sure. Probably. Depends on the pet.

*This is an unlikely scenario and would not occur if the shop owner in question had half a brain, or was selling a pet worth more than about 3 g

3. When's the next flatsale, I mean, outbreak?

If it's not listed in the Outbreaks section, I dunno. I'm very busy and this shop is NOT intended to take up all of my time. I will have outbreaks as I accumulate enough Microbes to sell.

4. How soon can I start breeding my Microbe?

As soon as your microbe is mature, you can breed it. This takes 1-2 weeks. Check out the breeding section for the details.

5. Is there a limit to how many Microbes I can own?

Nope! xd

User Image

As of this moment, the following Microbes are in containment, and could outbreak at any time.

Bacteriovirus - This Microbe doesn't attack humans, it kills and eats other Microbes. Best to keep them separated, or you may lose a few of your pets.

Ebola - This virus has become famous in recent years and is one of the most contagious and dangerous illnesses yet discovered. And we'll be bringing it to you soon!

Hepatitis B - An STD that causes liver failure in some of the people who contract it. Many people who carry it never show symptoms.

Influenza - Also called 'The Flu', it's one of the most common illnesses in North America. It mutates constantly, so there are new outbreaks each winter. Most people don't realize that Influenza can be dangerous, especially to infants and the elderly.

Strain 121 - This imaginatively named Microbe doesn't cause illness. It's a microorganism that lives in the heat vents deep under the ocean, capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures. It's a neato little bug!

Rhinovirus - Also known as the "Common Cold", this little bug, along with Influenza, makes millions of people miserable every winter. Better bring lots of chicken soup, because we have it now!

Streptococcus - This bacterium is the cause of the serious throat illness Strep Throat, and most of us have gotten it at some point in our lives. What most people don't realize is that this same bacterium causes the much more debilitating Flesh Eating Disease, which can cause limbs to need to be amputated to stop its spread through the body.

Smallpox - This virus no longer exists. It was stamped out about 30 years ago, but before they managed that, it was one of the deadliest diseases known. Smallpox ravaged the native peoples of North America, brought over by European explorers, and was also common in many developing nations.

T-cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia - Also called cancer of the bone marrow, this disease is actually caused by your own immune system. T-cells, whose function is to attack and eliminate infections in the body, multiply out of control.

Rabies - A well-known virus, rabies attacks the brain, driving the animal (or human) who carries it insane. It is transmitted in the bloodstream, through saliva, which is why a bite from a rabid animal is so dangerous.

HIV - Once HIV, or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus becomes active, it is called AIDS. It attacks the cells of the immune system. Latching onto the cell wall, it replicates itself inside the cell and destroys it, releasing millions more and systematically shutting down the body's ability to protect itself from disease. Most people don't die from AIDS. They die from another illness they contract and are unable to fight off because of AIDS.

Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum - Though this may seem to be an unremarkable, vaguely spiral-shaped microorganism, Magnteospirillum has one unique property. As part of its normal biological processes, it creates small clusters of a magnetically-charged metal!

Salmonella - Most people have heard of Salmonella. This Microbe is a bacterium that causes severe diarrhea, fever and cramps if it gets into the body - usually through eating contaminated meat or licking your fingers after touching the meat. So cook your chicken well, and use antibacterial soap after touching the raw meat!

Leprosy - Creepy looking little bugger, eh? Leprosy is famous for causing your body parts to 'fall off'. This bacterium attacks the skin and nerves, causing parts of your body to lose all feeling. Because the nerves are dead, cuts and damage aren't noticed, and infections take hold, eventually causing gangrene.

Mononucleosis - Or 'Mono' for short, is a common illness, causing a fever, sore throat and extreme tiredness - sometimes for months on end! The virus that causes it is related to Herpes, and it is sometimes called the Kissing Disease, because it's easily transferred through the saliva.

After you catch your Microbe and give it a name, the link will be here for a few days so you can add it to your sig or pet page!

Budding will work as follows. After you get your cell, within a week it will start to multiply. When your certificate is full of cells (at least 5 in the window) you can bring it here to receive your offspring. You will receive 2-5 offspring which you can then sell, give away, or donate to the shop if you wish. All of the offspring will be similar, but not the SAME as the parent. i.e. if your cell is red, there's a good chance that your offspring will be somewhere between purple and orange.

This process is called "Selfing" and will cost 500 g to complete. You may only self once. After you self the first time, your Microbe will be given antibiotic (see below) to keep your Microbe from causing an epidemic!

However, many of you may not want your certificate filled with little cells. If that's the case, you may purchase an Antibiotic, such as the one pictured below, for 100 g.

User Image

This antibiotic will keep your cell from multiplying, but you will still be able to bud! The trick is, you need to find another cell to bud with. This will also allow you to share genetic material, which means that the offspring will be a melting of the traits of BOTH parents.

Budding with a cell of the SAME species will cost 750 g.
Budding with a cell of a DIFFERENT species will cost 1500 g because I will need to develop new lineart.

Regardless of whether you self or not, you will need to check the patients section to see if your cell is mature enough to bud. When it's available, this will be indicated next to the entry for your Microbe.

Check below to see if there are any open slots. If there are, please post your order in the thread and send the trade immediately.

Budding list:
1. Teralinth dKalin - The Grump blaugh heart
2. Amadiel (Shiromaru) - Sesshi blaugh heart
3. ZEE DARK TERA and Trio Maxwell-Chang - FAEBUG and Unschuld blaugh

blaugh = paid
heart = finished budding
sweatdrop = not paid yet

Distribution of Offspring

This has never been explicitely stated before, so I'm going to do this now. Once you receive your offspring, you may do WHATEVER you want with it. You can raffle, auction, or flatsell the offspring. You can donate them to the shop for me to sell and keep all of the profits. You can keep them for yourself, or give them away to your friends. All I ask is the following:

1. Do something, anything with them, but do SOMETHING. I do not reopen the slot until all of the offspring have been certed, so if you plan to just ignore them, please just drop me a note saying you're donating them to the shop. If I hear nothing from you after a week or two, you'll likely get a PM from me.

2. If you make money from the sale of a Microbe, I am entitled to 50% of the gold. You're welcome to give them away or do a free raffle, but if you plan to make profits of your own from my shop, I'd appreciate a cut.

User Image

To relieve some of the load on me in terms of customs, and provide all of you with a bit more choice, I'm introducing one item at this time - the Gram Stain.

Gram Stain is used to change the base colour of your Microbe to another colour. The available colours are shown below:

User Image

Each tube of Gram stain costs 200g to be added to your Microbe. The actual pattern won't be changed, only the colour of either the base or the markings. Please specify which parts of your Microbe should be changed, as some of them (like Influenza) have several parts that may be different colours.

eek = Cyborg mutation?!

This post is dedicated to my Kaju, Koumori!76, 79, 81, 86, 88, 90, 91, 97

User Image

New Mutation?!

Some of you are probably wondering by now what the deal with the cyborg microbes is.

When Microbes multiply, their offspring are not always an exact copy of the parent. Small errors and changes in the genes occur. This has always been true at Microbes, as you can see in any of the selfings that have occurred.

However, it seems that our facilities here have become infected with an entirely new type of mutation eek This mutation can affect any of the species, and seems to do so randomly.

And the most amazing thing about this mutation is that there is NO way to tell which Microbe has it until it begins to multiply.

Once the mutation has expressed itself, however, it will NOT go away. Even if you self your Microbe and reduce it down to one again, that one will still have the mutation.

Perhaps, one day, advancements in gene therapy will allow us to remove the mutation, but at this point the mutation is irreversable.

If you would like to ensure that your Microbe does not express the mutation, you may give it antibiotics upon catching it (see the section on budding for more information on antibiotics). It only costs 100g, but will prevent you from selfing. However, it does not prevent you from breeding your Microbe with another one.

I hope you like this new addition to St. ChibiSchu's Hospital! xd

The Suggestion Box

The hospital is taking suggestions! I can't promise to use any of them, but if you have an idea for a virus, bacteria or other single-celled organism you'd like to see, but don't want to commission a custom for yourself, post a picture of the organism in the thread.

If I take your suggestion, you'll get a coupon for 250g towards anything in the shop. That includes flatsales, raffles, auctions or items.

IMPORTANT!

The picture must be either a scientific diagram of the cell, or an electron micrograph. Drawings are not accepted. I will draw them myself. What I want is a model to go by while developing my lineart.

As a note: not all suggestions will be listed below, automatically. If you give a suggestion, but the picture is not the right type, or for some other reason I don't think I can use it, it will not be added to the list of entries. I will only accept ONE entry for each illness, so if SARS is listed already, don't bother looking for pictures of SARS. The fact that SARS is listed below means that someone already gave me a url that has a picture that I can use for a model. There's no point in having more than one.

This event runs until I get tired of it blaugh Good luck!

Customs are now officially opened. The way customs will work is as follows:

If there is a custom slot open, post in the thread what your order is and start the trade. I will accept the trade when the custom is completed and give you your Microbe.

For a custom coloured form of an existing Microbe, the price is 1000g. For an entirely new Microbe, requiring new lineart and custom colouring, the price will be 3000g. This price will be reduced to 2000g if you can provide a website containing a picture or diagram of the microorganism requested. It's more expensive if I have to go doing the research myself.

To order your microbe, fill out the following form and post it in the thread.

Owner Name: (in case you're buying it for someone else)
Microbe Name: (to put on the certificate when I'm done)
Microorganism Species: (i.e. Bacteriovirus, or the name of one that I don't have available)
Colouring: (1-3 colours you'd like to have included, including any information you can give on how you'd like the colours mixed. i.e. spots, stripes etc.)
Additional information: (Anything else you want to specify about your custom Microbe)
URL with picture: (Only required if the species is not already available)

Please keep in mind that I am a Very Busy Person (tm). If I don't get to your custom for several weeks, PM me, but please understand that in addition to this shop, I colour for four other shops, role play several pets, and even have a life outside of Gaia. Please don't harass me. I have a to do list, and you ARE on it.

Occassionally, someone shows that they are a right twit and don't deserve to get a Microbe - except maybe in the bad way. Those people will be listed here, and I hope it's a very short list.

1. Neith-Kia - For continual harassment of several friends through various mediums, continuing to harass them even after being banned from shops and even blocked on AIM. stressed

The Explanation

Nearly two decades ago now, I was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic T-Cell Leukemia. I was ten at the time. (Yes, for those of you keeping track, this puts my RL age near 30. Go me!) Before I say anything else about the matter, the one thing that must be emphasized is that this bout with leukemia shaped me into who I am today.

There were no real drastic changes to my personality, and the changes to my life I found more fun than upsetting. Yes, there were awful needles and miserable tests, but there were also treats, and trips, and some of the best doctors in the world. Yes, people treated me differently, and some of the more insensitive ones refused to touch me for fear that my cancer would rub off on them. But it was also a time when I found a love of fantasy and life, and made friends who would stand beside me through almost anything.

In short, as I look back over my life, it was a rather good time, all told.

I lost my hair twice. The first time, I had these white wisps that made me look as though I were some mad scientist with the crazy, unkempt hair. The second, I was slick-headed bald, and that threw almost everyone off. I could postpone school tests just by declaring my wig was too hot and taking it off. (And they think clothing is distracting now?! I should've been banned from the school. *smirks*) I liked being bald. It was a unique event for me, and one whose memories I still treasure, strangely enough. I could go down to the local hair salon and say "shave it", but it wouldn't be the same.

Overall, one of the things I remember most was being told, finally, that leukemia was cancer. The thought terrified me. As I told my mother, people die from cancer, and that thought haunted me for five years, until I was declared cured. Every wish I made was to live. Every prayer I spoke was to live. You can't go through something like that without it changing your perception on life.

When Schu announced the opening of his new hospital, I knew immediately that I wanted a leukemia microbe. I wanted it for the sheer reason that despite the pain and misery of that time, I'm glad it happened. I'm a stronger, braver, and much, much happier person than I would have been without living through that, and I understand better the value of laughter and optimism as a medicine.

Leukemia and I have history together... and I'm proud to say that I'm enjoying having it as a pet on Gaia.

A final note: For those of you keeping track, I'm still in full remission, have remained in remission for seventeen years, and show no signs of suffering from a relapse. Go me. *snickers*
