Welcome to Gaia! ::

Hello everyone. ^_^

The new guilds feature is out, and it is a blast so far! But what I am using it for is far from a "guild." I am using it to create my own forum to post my information, my questions/answers, my advice, and my thoughts, to share with the rest of Gaia.

The guild is named Mutsu no Kami, and you can reach it by going
here. It is very incomplete at this stage, but I will try and work hard to make it better than this thread ever was. I think the forum-format will allow me this.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this thread. ^_^ It had a good 7 months. I will probably make this thread the discussional thread for MnK, so it's not going to get deleted or locked. But from now on all new information, guides, threads, and useful posts I have to make will be placed in there. You can view them all in the directory sticky. smile

Well, it certainly has been a while. I'm terribly sorry for the lack of updates. Today, I am reworking this thread; rearranging/editing posts, topic names, and other such information. I hope to be done relatively soon, but we'll see. smile

April 5th, 2004
Created a post about compressing images, especially bitmaps.

March 19th, 2004
Added some more links, and most importantly, a guide made by Kilani-sama on how to make a successful shop!

Cleaning out the thread a bit, removing things I feel aren’t necessary or don’t belong, and have made a ‘Gaia Dictionary’ from the old lingo post :)

Feburary 29th, 2004
I edited my signature help post and made it smaller.. hopefully people won't be so intimidated by it anymore.. or whatever was stopping them from reading it sad

Feburary 26th, 2004
Okaies, I edited the post on moderators and replaced the 11th question with a post on how to report problems to moderators and administrators ^^

Feburary 23rd, 2004
Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I went on my little break and now I have decided it might be best for me to start re-writing a lot of this thread to make it more compact and simpiler for the people who don’t like to read a thousand words to understand what ‘moderator’ means. This might take a few days but hopefully I will get it done ^_^

January 29th, 2004
Adding a post about how to make wishlists. I also plan on making a post for common questions unanswered elsewhere in this FAQ.

January 28th, 2004
Adding a section for shops/mini-shops/stores I enjoy or think are cute ^^ I'm also adding a post about general problems and issues that are happening on any given day. Hopefully it will prove useful.

2. How do I play on Gaia?

How does one play on Gaia? Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret first: Gaia Online is a community first, a game second. Gaia is all about communication, and interaction with other members!

Things you can do on Gaia:

  • Roleplay in the roleplaying forums.
  • Converse on the forums about a wide range of appropriate topics.
  • Post and comment on art in the art arena.
  • Spam in the Chatterbox Forum to make gold.
  • Post/view links in the Linklist.
  • Do any and all of the above!

Roleplay in the roleplaying forums. – Roleplaying is popular on Gaia, but is not all what Gaia is about! There are a few major roleplaying forums:
The Barton Town Forum for general roleplaying.
The Gaia Commerce Forum for roleplaying about shops, business, restaraunts, and the like.
The Guilds Roleplaying Forum for roleplaying specific to your guild. You can look for and join/create your own guild in the Guilds Forum, but please do be sure to read the stickies at the top, especially if you want to create your own guild.

Simply converse on the forums about a wide range of topics. – Gaia is a large online community, with people of all ages, that is growing every day. In the Gaia Forum Index you can see all of the basic forums available for posting or reading on Gaia. To find the subforms you must first enter the main forum, and the subforums will be displayed at the top of that forum. My list of forums and their sub-forums can be found here. Each post on Gaia will have its own appropriate place- please make sure to post in the correct forum!

Post your art in the art arena. – Yup! Gaia has an art arena! While your art work won't actually fight another piece of art to the death, it is a place where people can post their own, original art pieces and have them rated by fellow Gaians. Ofcourse, you can go there simply to comment and rate! You don't need to have art to enter the arena. You get gold for rating, commenting, and posting your own art pieces. Do note that spamming comments in the art arena is a fast way to lose gold, as you will be deducted gold per spam comment smile

Spam for gold in the Chatterbox Forum – Spam for gold? If you don't know what spamming is, spam is just a message that contains nothing tasteful, useful, or relating to the thread or forum. It's like posting "I like cheese." in a post about Gaia. It is just posted there to get gold. By making yourself gold you can purchase items from the shops at Gaia to dress your avatar! Be sure to make the chatterbox the ONLY place you post spam, please!

Post/view links in the linklist! – You can browse around the Gaian Link List looking for your favorite topics or interests! Keep in mind however that if you click the link to go to another site, you will not make gold on the other site because Gaia cannot track you outside of Gaia. You can even add your own link if you've found a link you would like to add to the list! Please do place them in the appropriate catagories.

You can do any and all of these things on Gaia ^_^
3. How do I make gold?

If you'll look at the above section, 2. How to play you will learn many ways to play on Gaia. All of those things give you gold! Even browsing without posting gives you gold! You can't just sit in one page and get gold, but as long as you are active you will get gold. For more information on how to get gold visit the
<CENTER>User Image
Rares, Gold and More FAQ

</CENTER> which has all of the information you will need! It does not give you specific amounts for what you do, as the values aren't always the same. If you post more often, you will get less gold per post than if you posted less often. If you post enough, eventually you won't get any gold per posts for the 12 hour period. That doesn't mean you shouldn't post if you want to! You won't lose any gold. The system is such so that people who post 100 posts a day won't make 10 times more gold than someone who only posts 10 posts a day.

That FAQ will also tell you everything you need to know about rare events, rare items, and much more! ^_^ A must read!
4. What can I buy with gold?

Ahh, here comes the fun part! Spending your hard earned gold! Currently, there are seven NPC run shops in Gaia.

Ian's Barton ShopOn a budget? This shop’s for you!
Sasha's Gambino OutfittersLooking for style? You’ve come to the right place! But I hope you brought your check book..
Ruby's HatrackHead getting cold? Come right in!
Agatha’s Jewelery ShopNeed something for that special someone?
Vanessa’s SalonNeed a new do? This shop’s for you!
Edmund’s H.R. WesleyEdmund’s a little scary, but his store is nice!
Moira’s Durem DepotWant a wild look? She'll hook ya up.

You can get to each of these places by using the Gaian Map as well.

You can click on an item in the store to get a dialog to either buy, preview, or cancel. You can preview things before you buy them! Unfortunately you can only preview one item at a time, sorry. You can also sell items back to the store by clicking on your items at the bottom of the screen next to your character. (If this is your first time shopping, you probably don't have anything. Don't worry, you will some day!)

You can also now gift-wrap your items! When in the first three shops, simply click on one of your items and select ‘Gift Wrap’. It will cost 10 gold to gift-wrap the item.
You can also engrave your jewelery! When in the jewelery shop, buy a piece of jewelery and select it at the bottom and choose to engrave it. Make sure to check your spelling, it can’t be redone on the same item!

If you can't afford an item, please do not private message others to ask for items they are wearing or for gold they may not even have. Just because someone has been around for a long time or has expensive items doesn't mean they are in fact rich. xp

Do note that many rares, uncommons, and other items sell for little to nothing to NPC stores. This is to encourage you to sell these items to other players, keeping them in circulation.
5. How do I put on my clothes?

That's really easy! You see your avatar up above this post? Click on him or her! You will be taken to your inventory page. You should see your items in the inventory section. Simply click on an article of clothing and it will appear on your avatar on the left. Click on the User Image button to save your changes!

Note that due to server load, it may take up to 10 seconds for your clothing to be removed or put on.

If you can't see all of your clothing items, click the All tab in your inventory space.
6. Where do I get items I can't find in stores?

There are three different kinds of items that you cannot find in stores.

1. Rare Event Items.
The first is rare event items. You can learn more about rare events and how to get their items by reading the
<CENTER>User Image
Rares, Gold and More FAQ

</CENTER>
That will tell you everything you need to know about rare events and how to get them. For a list of current rare items, you should visit the Gaian Exchange Network which also includes estimate prices to buy these items from other players.

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=250 height=2></CENTER>

2. Donation Letter Items.
The second is donation letter items. Donation Letters are given to people for donating real american currency (United States Dollars) to Gaia. For more information on donating to Gaia, or the items that come in donation letter items, please visit the Donations FAQ. The items will be listed at the top. You can donate to Gaia through paypal or through the mail, or you can just buy a donation letter from another player in the Gaia Exchange Forum.

Note:
Donation letters won't open until near the end of the month! Around the 25th.
No one knows what is inside until it is announced.
No, you cannot get previous month letters by donating to Gaia; you must get those older letters, and their items, from other players.

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=250 height=2></CENTER>

3. Special Event Items.
The third is special event items. These items were only given out during a special event or holiday and have not been re-released. These include the elusive User Image bunny and User Image chicky slippers. This also now includes the User Image Gaia shirt items and User Image Santa Hats. The only way to get these items is to buy them from another player who recieved one during the event or from someone else who did.

Please do not private message a player and ask to buy or to borrow/have an item they are wearing that you want and cannot afford!
8. How do I add pictures to my signature?

<CENTER>Remember there are rules for signature size in place!
500 pixels tall
500 pixels wide
100kb file size
These are the restrictions. Please appreciate them.

25. How do I tell how big my signature pictures are!?
</CENTER>

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=300 height=2></CENTER>

<CENTER>Section 1: Finding a host and the image's URL.</CENTER>
Web hosts and getting your image online.
To get your image on the internet you will need a host for the world wide web! Many places offer this service for free, though the quality and style can be different for each place. Here I will provide a short list of available free web hosts that will host your image for you!

  • http://www.uploadit.org/ It is advised you not use this host for Art Arena picture hosting.
  • http://www.angelfire.com (requires you make a webpage of some sort.)

Please do note that I pay for my own hosting and as such using free hosts is not something I am very familiar with.
Simply go to one of these sites and sign up for your free account. The signup method is different for each but none of them should ask you for any sort of credit card or payment information. Once your account is working and you are logged into your account, simply upload your image. The method may be more obvious with different hosts and more concealed with others but they all have their own ways, and they should each have a handy FAQ or 'How-To' guide explaining this to you.

URLs, Domains, and what they mean.
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. That's a pretty weird name, but in essence, what it is is an address. Here's an example that should be able to help you understand.

A website or URL usually comes in a common format. I will use the image of Gaia's Rock Puppy as an example.
User Image
http://graphics.gaiaonline.com/GraphicElements/rockpuppy.gif

This is what a URL looks like. You need to find what this is for your picture. If you view the picture directly online, it should appear in your address bar at the top of your browser. You may also get it by right clicking on the image and selecting properties. This will give you the image’s URL. Just copy and paste it.

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=300 height=2></CENTER>

<CENTER>Section 2: Adding the image to your signature.</CENTER>
Where to put your signature.
Now that you have the URL for your signature image, it's time to add it to your signature.
Go to your profile and click on the User Image button. This will take you to your profile editing page. Scroll down to your signature box. (It's the big one.) This is where you'll be putting your signature image.

For a list of the available BBCode options available on Gaia feel free to check out the BBCode FAQ.

Putting the picture into your signature.
You need only to put the URL of your image between the image tags for BBCode.
For example, if you wanted the Rock Puppy to be in your signature, you would put in:

[IMG]http://graphics.gaiaonline.com/GraphicElements/rockpuppy.gif[/IMG]
If you want to make your image a link to web page or site, just put the image inside the URL tags, like so:

[URL=http://www.gaiaonline.com][IMG]http://graphics.gaiaonline.com/GraphicElements/rockpuppy.gif[/IMG][/URL]
Then if you clicked on the image you would be taken to the Gaia home page!
9. How do I roleplay?
Take note: This post is rather old and I have improved many of the other posts, except for this one. This post is really huge and because of my inadequate roleplaying skills, it won't be terribly easy to re-organize and improve this post. I will get around to it, but if it seems a little poor in quality compared to the rest of this guide, I humbly apologize. It still has decent information, but soon I hope to improve it greatly.

RPing is role-playing. Here is a simple definition.

www.role-play.net
Role-play?ing: An instance or situation in which one deliberately acts out or assumes a particular character or role.

Don't quite understand it? The basic premise of role playing is to play. It's a game. There's no controller, there's no joystick, and there aren't any color-coded buttons to push (unless you have one snazzy keyboard) and there isn't a 2-page instruction manual telling you how to put a disc or cartridge into a box with pretty lights. Without these things, it's still a game. It's a game that you play using your imagination.

The only rules are the rules made by the GM (or game master), which is a generic role played by the creator of the game. They set the rules, the time, the story, everything needed for whatever you're playing. They don't always play the role of a God, but they are generally the persons in control.

Roleplaying is actually pretty simple, though it can become pretty complex. It all depends on what role you are playing! Some role playing games or scenerios involve a lot of freestyle, where you just pretty much do what you want. Other times it can be rather strict. There are a few places in Gaia you can 'officially' roleplay, or have roleplaying communities, such as the Barton Town forum, the Gaia Commerce forum and the Guilds forum. They offer many places where you can role play to your hearts content, but please remember that even if you are trying to roleplay a bad guy, you still have to respect the rules of the game or scenerio, as well as the other people playing in it, or you are just being a jerk, plain and simple.

In many (but not all) RP games there are different classifications for players.

DM = Dungeon Master, very similar to GM (as far as I know) but was more intended for (A)D&D. ([Advanced]Dungeons & Dragons) Still can be used if there's a dungeon in the scenerio, obviously mrgreen
GM = Game Master, or creator.
PC = Player Character. Another player in the game. These include yourself.
NPC = Non-Player Character. These are made up characters in the game that are either non-controlled or controlled by the GM/their owner. Such could be a slave, a random knight, or side-kick. These can also be monsters, or opponents.

There can be other classifications as directed by the GM, but these are the more common ones. (Sorry if I left any out!)

After knowing which game or scenerio you want to take place in, and after reading the rules, all you have to do is follow the instructions to joining this guild or RP! Most just have you post in their thread. When role playing, most people prefer to perform actions in the third person. This can be done like so.

*Sky walks into the bar, well aware this place is a hide-out for lewd savages of many types. He heads straight for the back of the bar, ignoring the fighting and blood spilling being carried out about him. He makes sure not to get pulled into the fray*

-OR-

*He walks into the bar, well aware this place is a hide-out for lewd savages of many types. Heading straight for the back of the bar, he ignores the fighting and blood splling being carried about him, being careful not to get himself thrown into a brawl.*

You don't need the italics, and some people use :: to initiate and end an action instead of *. It doesn't really matter, as long as you make it obvious it's an action and not what your character is saying. If you watch (read) how other people play, you should get the hang of it quite easily.
The first style is in third person, the second is in second person.
Third person is more like story telling. Second person is telling your actions through the eyes of another; IE yourself.

Please read the underlying quotation as it corrects me in my error of persons and a little of their role in roleplaying. My apologies for anyone I've now destroyed with incorrect english User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show..
Akkhima
Oh... this is very wrong. Those two passages are the same person... they're both third. One just refers to Sky by a pronoun... he, and changes some wording. That doesn't change the person.

Second person is when the story controls the person it's talking about, and uses "You". This is used by the GMs, mostly, they put in a passage like "You walk into the bar and can tell this is a hideout for lewd savages. If you head for the back of the bar, you will have to be careful if you don't want to get any blood on your clothes or get pulled into a brawl yourself."

First person can also be used in roleplaying, though, when referring to your character as yourself. and say "*I walk into the bar, well aware this place is a hide-out for lewd savages of many types. Heading straight for the back of the bar, I ignore the fighting and blood splling being carried about me, being careful not to get myself thrown into a brawl.*"

That's pretty much it! Remember, RPing isn't for everyone, and just because you do it doesn't mean you have to do it all the time. Do it as much or as little as you like.

<B>8b. How can I roleplay well and make lots of friends, have lots of fun?
</B>

That's very easy! In essence all you have to do is be kind, caring, and considerate ^^ However, if you need me to be a little specific than that, let's try it this way!

If you are the GM/Game Maker:
Be courteous to your players! Even if you're playing the role of an evil person, or an all powerful god, if you don't treat your players with respect you won't have many!
Try to make rules fair for everyone.
Try to create an enviroment where people will be comfortable playing in!
Be as involved in the game as you expect your players to be! No one wants a lazy leader. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

If you are a player:
Be courteous to other players, including the GM! You do not have to play this game, so if you do not want to, just leave!
Try to be civil! If you think something is going unfairly, speak up about it, but in a civilized manner. People are much more likely to help fix things when they're told what's wrong, instead of being yelled at.
Help out new people! If you're experienced and the other people aren't, either respectfully leave or share your experience with them. There's no need for elitism.
10. I have an idea for Gaia! Where do I put it?

That's wonderful! Gaia always welcome good suggestions. However, you can't just post them randomly!

STOP SUGGESTING THESE THINGS!! XO Click me!

If you think you have an original and thoughtout suggestion for a new item, editing an existing item, or anything regarding avatars and their items, please post it in the Official Item Suggestion Thread.

If you think you have an original and thoughtout suggestion for a feature for Gaia, please post it in the Feature Suggestion Thread

If you want to discuss or suggest an aspect of Gaia's eventual battle system, please post or view the Battle Suggestion Thread
11. What's the art arena?

The
<CENTER>User Image
Art Arena
</CENTER>
is a place on Gaia where you can display your artwork for others to rate and comment on! You also get gold for doing it.

To answer a few quick, common questions:
No, the art arena cannot host your pictures, unless you draw on their oekaki board. You will have to find your own host. I have a small list of several free hosts in my signature FAQ, you should look that up if you need image hosting.
It can take up to a day or two for a picture to get rejected or accepted? please be patient.
If your picture was rejected, and your drawing is really good, it may be because your drawing resembles a copyrighted piece of artwork too much. If your art seems that it could be mistaken with the original artists' work and almost matches one of their art peices, it may be rejected.
If you post someone else' artwork claiming it is yours, you will be caught and fed to the tonberries. Very hungry tonberries.

12. How do I contact moderators and administrators?

If you have a problem and private message multiple moderators, please delete the other PMs that are still in your outbox after it is solved so the other moderators do not waste their time looking into something that has already been resolved. Thank you.

<CENTER>Moderators</CENTER>

Note: You can private message any online moderator about any situation, if you are unsure where it belongs or you are more comfortable with a certain moderator (that happens to be online) and they will either forward the information themselves or tell you where to send it smile The following information isn't set in stone, it's just my advisement.

arrow How do I report something to the moderators?
Go to the Gaia Forum Index and scroll to the bottom of the page. There will be a list of online general and dedicated moderator. There will also be a list of a forum’s dedicated moderators at the top of its forum. Click their name to enter their profile and send them a private message. Please be courteous and calm when PMing moderators and try to include as much detail as you can, so they can help you faster and easier ^^

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=200 height=2></CENTER>
Why would I want to report something to the dedicated moderators?

  • You have a thread which you would like moved because you realize it belongs somewhere else.
  • You want your post removed because you feel as though simply abandoning it and/or editing isn’t enough.
  • You want post(s) removed because they are illegal or harassing and cannot do so yourself.
  • You wish to report someone for harassment, or other general rule.
  • You want to report an inappropriate signature.
  • If you need your signature re-enabled.
  • Concerning art and bandwidth theft.

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=200 height=2></CENTER>
Dri

When in doubt, just pm an online Dedicated Moderator! If it needs to go to a green, they'll take care of it!

This message brought to you by your friendly neighborhood, overworked greens.

Why would I want to report something to the general moderators?

  • You feel as though you have been hacked because something is different about your account since your last login and/or you have checked your completed trades and noticed trades you did not make.
  • You have a friend who has been hacked and they are relaying the message to you.
  • You have been scammed by way of trading.
  • There are no dedicated moderators available to private message about their duties.

<CENTER>Administrators</CENTER>

How do I contact the administration?
Simply fill out the Feedback Form and fill out the appropriate information. Do note that it could take a few days to receive a response. Please include your username and the email address connected with the account (include both new and old emails if you are having re-activation problems) and be clam and detailed about your issue. If you simply send them ‘I got banned wtf?’ they will either ignore you or be less able to help you.

Help them help you, please :)

<CENTER><img src="http://divine.yorisou.net/GaiaHelp/1x2.gif" width=200 height=2></CENTER>

Why would I want to report something to the administrators?

  • My account is broken/can’t log in/is waiting activation.
  • I have been banned and don’t know why, or want to challenge the reason.
  • You have waited 24 hours since donating via paypal or a week since donating via snail mail and have not yet received your donation thank you letters.
  • The moderators are unable to handle the situation. (Moderators will instruct you to contact the administrators in this case.)

14. What are all of the forums?

Here I will list all of the current forums and subforums, even if you cannot post in them, and give you basic information on that forum.

All of the base forums can be found at the Forum Index.

My little • signifies a subforum. All of the forum names are clickable and will take you straight to that forum. Please read the forum stickies before posting in that forum!
