About Aries

How he came to me was quite a shock. I unfortunately missed the part of motherhood where I had to bottlefeed a squirmy bundle (a mixed blessing, since currently I have two small, squirmy bundles that need bottlefeeding), and I need to concentrate on making sure Aries grows into a mature adult from this teen stage.

He seems to like watching the Discovery Channel on TV. Which is a problem, since when he stays up late to watch it he won't let me change the channel so I can watch my favorite anime... I've gone a weekend or two without a single new episode of anything I really like. What I wouldn't give to see Trigun again without wrestling Aries for the remote!

Aries seems to get along with everyone in the getting-cramped apartment I've been renting out, since a real house is beyond my bank account. He seems fascinated with the babies I have, a pair of infant thunder demons named Hiten and Manten. For their part, they're very curious about his horns. I hope Aries doesn't mind them grabbing his horns too much, but he's been very complacent about it.

When it comes to him and me... so far it's been a little shaky. Aries misses his former guardian terribly, and he's in a state of denial that now he's my son. I hope we break the ice properly soon.

Today, I ventured into the Astra Rehabilitation Center, thinking just a quick visit wouldn't be a life-changing experience. Was I wrong.

When I reemerged, following me was Aries, the... reincarnation of the constellation of the ram? It was very confusing at first. Apparently his former parent was not able to take care of him, and I was the most suitable person for the job. I don't think Aries likes me all that much, he's sulking in his new room right now. How I want to do something about it, but he seems to be still in shock that now I'm his mum. What I hope is that this stage will pass quickly.

Monday, October 4

:blows dust off journal: Whew, I haven't been here in ages! Been very busy, and I think that Aries is happy here at last! Okay, here's how we got into the "parent-child" relationship.

Bonding Time

Korini sat on the couch in front of the telly sleepily, at the wee hours of half-past midnight. The newest episode of Inu-Yasha had just aired, and she was thinking about going to bed soon. Yawning, she leaned her head against a throw pillow as some commercials came on. The sound of footsteps greeted her ears, and she looked up curiously.

"Erm... Hello." Aries said sheepishly, turning to go back to his room. If his new parent was still awake, she probably wasn't going to let him change the the channel.

"It's okay, come sit down. I don't bite." Korini smiled at him, and sat up. A little reluctantly, Aries seated himself next to her, and immediately grabbed the remote and switched it to the History Channel. There was a special on the Holocaust airing at the moment.

"Thanks, Mum." Aries said, leaning back and focusing on the screen.

"Did you just call me..." Korini blinked, he had never addressed her like that before. And then she hugged him. Aries nearly fell over in surprise, then the guardian and child started laughing. The proverbial ice had been broken.

Cute, ne? I'm thinking of buying Aries a gift for being so well-behaved, he has the patience of a saint with all the little ones in my house.

Well, I went shopping for Aries a little while ago, and now I'm convinced to teach him to play an instrument. He's not too enthusiastic about it, since he has little to no experience with music. I bought him a black laquer shamisen, and I'm looking for a good teacher for him. And someplace where I can buy a lot of replacement strings.

Well, I admit it. I was stumped in finding Aries a good music teacher with a sane price (500 gold per session?! GODS NO!!), so now I'm just ordering music books and supervising his practices. He can play up to three notes now without snapping a string, a new record! I think Aries looks very cute playing his shamisen, but whenever I tell him that he rolls his eyes and says "Sure, Mum," sarcastically.

As if he were one to complain.

After two weeks of lull, something quite interesting has happened! Aries wrote a short little tune that he likes to play on his shamisen (which he is much better at, since I make him practice at least an hour a day). It's very pretty, and I think he's going to be quite a musician someday. He's a bit skeptical, but I have faith in him.

The real interesting thing is that poor Aries is getting rather restless, he can't sit still for very long anymore. He says his horns are itchy, and he keeps going outside and headbutting a tree in the backyard. I am concerned.

Guess who is going on vacation back north for Thanksgiving? Rikoma, me, and all my kids. sweatdrop He really gave no choice in the matter, although we both know our family regards us as nuts on the family tree. -.- *sigh*

So we've packed up the little ones in car seats, rented another car so we can fit everybody, and we're driving to the Northlands to spend some time with the kinfolk. My neurotic mum, my mannerless dad, my six mood-swingly sisters (I'm sister number seven, and mum has six older sisters too), my curmudgeon grandparents, and all my aunts, uncles, cousins, and so forth. Joy.
