Staff
Well, there's Jynk. She's the creator and artist of the orphanage and Changelings. She also wanted to say a few words...

Jynk
"I'm not an artist, I've never been an artist, I don't know what an artist looks like, I have this sick obsessive need to stand in front of an audience and make up s**t."—Adam Busch

Gashlycrumb oversees the orphanage and takes care of the wards till they're adopted.

Yun, GenderScrewed, and LittleKosMos will be helping with upkeep.

Edgewood will be enforcing and keeping Jynk (in)sane. He'll probably do some upkeep, too.

Kuyalu will be doing light upkeep and monitoring thread RP.

Other staff will be added as needed.

History
The Kelton Orphanage has been around for centuries, helping Gaian couples not blessed with their own children take in some of the unfortunate children not blessed with loving parents. Over time, the orphanage fell to disrepair and a new family bought the establishment—the Gashlycrumbs. They fixed the building up and took over placing children with families. The children they brought to the orphanage were different, though. They weren't like the others...

The Next Chapter
Jynk pulled her vardo over and looked up at the building before her, then checked the address she was given. This was the place, alright, but seemed..well, a little scary. She decided it was best to leave her housemates behind and just do the job as quickly as she could. She started down the small steps of her wagon when Lunchmeat attached himself to her, chittering like a coked up monkey.

"You can't go, disappointment," Jynk said, trying to get the demon to turn loose.

"Jen no go. No saf. Lumi grr. Lumi mak saf," the demon babbled clinging tightly. Jynk looked down at the creature and sighed. Obviously Lunchmeat had it in his wee little head to be protective this evening...for once. The demoness nudge the little demon up to her shoulder and closed the door of the vardo, lest more of her housemates decide to tag along.

Straightening up and putting on a brave face, with her demonkey at her side, Jynk walked up and knocked on the enormous front door of the building. A few moments passed and a young man opened the door. He peered over the smoked lenses of his classes, tilting his head forward a bit. His grey hair barely covered the prominance of his pointed ears.

"May I help you?" he asked in a voice like black velvet. Jynk shuddered a bit, thouroughly creeped out.

"I was told to come here. Magic needed. Show room," she babbled, tail twitching nervously. She gave the man a big, stupid grin.

"You must be the demoness. My name is Loren Gashlycrumb. The room is right this way," the man said, moving aside to let Jynk enter. She nodded quickly and darted in, looking about as if expecting something to jump out and eat her. Gashlycrumb shut the door, making her start and she turned to look at him. "The room is this way. Normally I would've handled this myself, but I'm afraid I lack the power that usually is present in my family."

"Yeah, that's nice. So, this'll be a simple boosting spell right?" Jynk asked, following the man. "I'm really not so good with the magic thing. I can do small stuff, sure, but big jobs...I'm kind of lame...ish..."

"It won't require much from you," Gashlycrumb said, smiling at the demoness as he opened the door of the aforementioned room. "Right this way, please."

Jynk nodded as she was ushered into the room. She looked around, taking in the dark drapes on the windows, the wood paneled floor, and high ceiling. In the middle of the room was a table and upon that table was a small silver chest. Gashlycrumb walked up to the table and looked back at the demoness, beckoning her closer. Jynk took a deep breath and crossed over to him, looking down at the little metal box.

"So, what do I need to do?" she asked, golden eyes glittering in the dim light from the candels placed about the room.

"This is my family's link to the other world...the fae world," Gashlycrumb said, laying a hand on the silver chest. "I tell you this in strict confidence. You must tell no one about this."

"I can dig it," the demoness said, nodding. Gashlycrumb raised an eyebrow, but continued on.

"The Kelton Orphanage is not like other orphanages. It's history has become entertwined with the arcane lore of old. My family's doing, I suppose. The link needs to be recharged. I can't do it. That's where you come in," he explained. Jynk looked at the box.

"So I just amp it up like a battery? No biggie. I can do that," she said, reaching for the chest. The man grabbed her hand mere inches from the surface of the box. Jynk looked up at him, eyes wide, as Lunchmeat reared up on her shoulder, snarling and flapping his wings. The demoness jerked her hand back. "What gives, yo?"

"If you recharge the link, you'll be bound to the orphanage," Gashlycrumb said softly. "You'll be as responsible for the children here as I am...as my family has been for centuries. They are very special children, you understand."

"I got it. Special children. Need homes. Loving parents. Can I just charge this doodad up already and get the frick out of here? Major creepy vibes going on here, pal," Jynk said, narrowing her eyes. Her patience had about run it's course and she was getting a little tired of the long-winded explainations and chicanery going on.

"You touch the link and you will not be allowed to leave the grounds. You will live here and help place the children with families that will take care of them. These children are not like other children," the man said.

"Well, that takes care of the heebies, but I still got the jeebies," Jynk said, tail twitching with annoyance. "Look, buddy. I just want to get this over with, then you can go back to...whatever it is you do." She slapped her hand down on the silver chest. No sooner had she done so that she felt a strong force surrounding her. A silver bracelet appeared around her wrist as if a piece of the box itself had come loose and now clung to her. Her power kicked in, instinctively charging up the link. In that moment, she understood what the man had been trying to tell her about the link...about the building. She recoiled and looked at him, shaking a little from fear and the power drain. "The heebies came back."

"You're aware of what you've done?" Gashlycrumb asked. Jynk nodded a little, sitting on the floor and looking up at him. The man sighed and knealt down in front of her. "You can leave the grounds. I was making that part up. You're still bound to the orphanage, though."

"Why do the jobs never go smoothly?" Jynk asked no one in particular as she got up. She sighed and looked at Gashlycrumb. "So, can I park my vardo on your grounds? I've been looking for a permanent place of residence. Also, I'd like the thing hooked up for cable tv. I've been missing all my shows since my cottage sort of...blew up...not that it was my fault."

"Um...yes, that would be fine," the man said, standing up. He was clearly taken aback by the demoness' reaction. "Anything else?"

"Yeah, actually there is," Jynk said. "Can I adopt one of the kids?"

First of all, I just want to say, these are not pets. The concept for Kelton Orphanage comes fromthe old legends about faery changelings left in place of human children. Fascinated by these stories, I thought they'd make a wonderful roleplay idea. This is how the orphanage came about.

Each child was brought across from the faery realm by the Gashlycrumb family. As the centuries went on, the Gashlycrumb legacy began to weaken. This is when Loren Gashlycrumb brought Jynk in to help bring children across. Why do they do it? Because some of the fair folk believe that humans must be tested every so often to see if it's the right time for them to come back to the mortal realm. They select children and send them through the link to reside at Kelton until they are placed with human families. Many families raise these children unaware of their true nature, for these children lose their memory of their life in the faery realm. It's the job of the person raising them to help them remember (though it can't be forced).

As such, every changeling is different. There are no two alike (though they may end up as the same fae type). They are individually drawn through all their stages and develop into their true nature based on how they're RPed. The outcomes are all pretty much random...so there's not really any way you can try to steer a child into becoming anything in particular, though I'll give hints along the way.

The Changelings are very RP intensive and require a lot of writing, so if that's not your cup of tea, this probably isn't the shop for you. That being said, I also want to point out that there probably won't be a lot of Changelings up for adoption. Jynk isn't able to do as many of the Changelings as she'd really like to due to real life projects and other interests. As such, you won't be able to pick the fae form of the Changeling. Sorry, you'll just have to see how it turns out via RP. Your Changeling children have names already and will not have them changed. They're orphaned children needing loving homes, not pets. Please keep that in mind.

Changelings can live a very long time, once they reach their full maturity. While the staff at Kelton have no issues with a parent wanting to adopt more than one orphan, we'd like to ask that you house no more than two. Also, adopting more than one orphan will make them siblings, which means they can not have children together ('cause ew).

General Rules.
01. Don't piss Jynk off. This includes PMing her, sending random trades to her when there's not a sale going on, or being rude in the thread. It will get you spanked and sent to the poo list till she's not mad anymore.

02. Do not steal the artwork. Jynk works hard on the crappy art she provides for the shop and really doesn't need anyone else using it elsewhere. This also will get you on the poo list and reported to a mod. Stealing artwork will also have you banned from the shop. Don't do it, okay?

03. Don't b***h about the Changeling you get. Like a real adoption of a 7-10 year old, you don't get to pick the name or personality. Also, don't b***h about the fae they become. That's based a little on the starting personality and mostly on RP. Bitching will...well..see rule 01.

04. Be respectful to people. Don't start fights or be a snit about stuff. This includes how your Changeling turned out, auctions, and flatsales. the Staff will not tolerate fighting of any sort. You have issues with someone, take it to PM or talk to a mod. Don't bring it around here.

05. Only one person can be a guardian of any one Changeling. This means...no co-owning. It makes it easier on us as far as RP upkeep goes. If you want to write out that someone is raising the Changeling with you, that's fine, but only the guardian on the certificate will be acknowledged in regards to ownership.

06. If you are slacking on your updating and RP, you'll be notified by one of the staff (probably whomever does upkeep on your journal). Failure to acknowledge the notification or to start updating/PRing will result in having your Changeling taken away. Be aware that this will only be done in extreme cases of the guardian not updating/RPing without prior excuses ('cause we're all slackers, too). No refunds will be given if your Changeling is removed from your care.

07. Please refrain from extreme bumping and quoting. It's annoying and we'll ask you to stop, and then eventually ask you to leave the shop for awhile. Some bumping and quoting is fine, we just don't need pages of nothing but bumps or 7216543 quotes in one post.

Flatsale Rules.
01. Check to see when the flatsale is being held. We'll post it quite a good while before the day of the sale. Don't PM any of the staff asking about it. Also, don't send trades when there are no sales going on. We'll just take your gold and thank you for the donation. Obviously you have too much and wish to part with some out of the goodness of your heart.

02. There are no reservations. Period. Don't ask about it.

03. Flatsales, like many flatsales, will begin with a post from one of the staff..most likely Gashlycrumb or Jynk..stating when the flatsale begins. Please refrain ordering one or submitting an entry for one before the starting post.

04. A situation will be given or a question asked before the flatsale. It'll probably be up there for awhile before hand, depending on when Gashly posts it. When the 'go' post is given, you will have whatever length of time is alloted in the flatsale area to submit your entry. Please include the name of the child you are wishing to adopt. It should be a well-thought out entry that's at least a paragraph long...but no novellas. We don't want to be reading entries for the next three weeks, okay? The ones we like best, based on writing skills and originality, will be allowed to adopt the child requested. Everyone else will just have to try again next time.

05. You may only adopt one child per flatsale, but may only own one flatsale child. This means that if you get a child in the first flatsale, you may not get another one for yourself from any other flatsale. After that you have to wait till breeding or an auction to get another.

06. Don't edit your damn entries. We will know and your entry will be ignored.

Auction Rules.
01. Again, check the first page for the date. Don't PM us about it.

02. Children won in the auctions will be customizable...to a point. You will be allowed to choose the gender, name, basic appearance, and what fae they will become (within reason). You will also be allowed to have input on the personality.

03. Before you are allowed to bid in an auction (taking a page from Puchiko's book), you will have to answer a question via PM. The answer will be on the front page somewhere of the thread. This is to make sure you've read the information provided. Do not post the answer in the thread. You will be banned from the auction and put on the poo list for a really long time.

04. No bitchiness during auctions. Don't discourage people to bid. That's mean, yo. No fighting on auction threads either.

05. Items may be accepted instead of gold. You'll have to check the auction thread for what items they may be and the values.

Journal/RP Rules.
01. Stay in character! You child comes with a personality already. Stick to it. You can develop them over time, but gradually. Remember, a lot of their starting personality and how you RP them determine what they will become.

02. Your character is not God...or whatever deity you believe in. Seriously. They may be a fae in their true form, but they're not all-powerful. No one on this thread is omnipotent or omniscent...'cept maybe Jynk. o.o

03. One of the staff will issue your journal to you. Whomever issues you your journal will be the one handling upkeep. This will most likely be Gashly. He needs something to do with his free time. If you have any questions regarding your journal or need to inform us that you'll be unable to update for awhile, please PM Gashly and he'll relay the message to the appropriate staff member in charge of your journal.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

As I stated before, the Changelings are very RP heavy and do require a lot of writing. It's the only way for your Changeling to discover their true nature. If you're not RPing them and keeping up with the journal, then your child may grow up never knowing what they really are and be depressed...or worse, child services may return them to Kelton to be placed with another guardian or they may run away. O.O!

Journals. Thanks to Anya! for this wonderfully brilliant concept. As a guardian of a Changeling, you'll be issued a journal to keep up with. This will help you record your ward's development and help the Kelton staff determine what your Changeling's true form is. It's ideal to post about once a week, but exceptions can be made if you discuss it with us.

From time to time, the staff will post in your journal (usually whomever made it for you) and update on how the development of your Changeling is coming along. You're also welcome to include things like photo albums and the like in your journal. You can write about whatever you like, as long as it pertains to your Changeling in some way.

Your Changeling's image will change, so please be sure to save them when they do. Also, it'd be helpful to the Kelton staff to know when your journal's been updated, so...posting a note in the thread would be nice.

RP. Along with updating your journal, you'll be needing to bring your Changeling around the orphanage every now and then so they can play and interact with other children and guardians. Remember, your children may have developed strong friendships before you adopted them. It'd be nice to allow them to visit their friends.

RP will also give you another way to develop your ward and let the staff watch them in group interactions, thus having a better idea of what their true nature might be.

Informal and formal RP are both welcome.

Open adoptions usually will involve 3-4 children looking to be placed in homes. The cost of adoption will be 8k per child. You may only adopt one child per open adoption.

Charmed children (those who's fae forms are already determined) are very rare and will be only available through closed adoptions (auctions). The starting for a closed adoption will be 10k. You can only get one charmed child...ever. They are aware of their true nature and may retain memories of the fae realm. This makes them sometimes difficult to care for and, thus, would ask that you only have one charmed child in your household, whether you already have another adopted Changeling or not.

Marriages between adult Changelings allow them to have children of their own, but they can only be married to one Changeling...and it's usually for life. They're very loyal. Marriages cost 12k (6k from each Changeling's guardian) and can result in 1-3 children being born to the couple, depending on their fae nature.

Pet Trades. The staff at Kelton have talked it over and are willing to allow adoption of children in exchange for adoption from other shops. If you want a pet trade, just drop us a note in the thread and we'll talk it over. Don't be disappointed if we turn it down, though.

Changelings have several stages of development. Each stage is unique and will bring your ward that much closer to their true form. Some Changelings begin showing signs of their true nature sooner than others. Early bloomers are usually a result of how involved their guardian is with them.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Child. This is how you get your Changeling. At this point they're usually around 7-10 years old and ready to be taken home. The children may be apprehensive about being adopted or may be rather cheerful about it. They will rely heavily on the care of their guardians. The beginings of what they will become might be apparent in their personalities or interests at this stage.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Adolescent. Congrats, you now have a pre-teen brat that thinks s/he knows everything. They are about 11-13 now and can be quite the handful. Some are more cheerful than others and a few might have physical changes, the first visible signs of their true nature.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Teen. Your Changeling is now a teenager...hide the car keys. They are now around 14-17 and can be rather willful. Be patient with them, though. Many changes should be noticable by now as to what they will become and some my actually be far enough along that the staff can determine what they really are. This will be noted under the info box on the certificate. This doesn't mean they're finished developing into their true form, though.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Adult. After your great parenting, it's all paid off. Your Changeling has finally become an upstanding citizen...well, they're adult, anyway. By now if it wasn't apparent what their true nature is, it can be easily determined by their appearance. Late bloomers might go through more changes after reaching this stage as their body settles into it real form. Though they may be adults, they'll still need their parents and want stay with them.

Other stages will added.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Once your Changeling has reached adulthood, they are free to marry their love interest. Yes, they can marry someone of the same gender and have children with them (oooh, magic *sparkly glitter*), but only can have children if at least one of them has reached a point where their true nature is known.

The Wedding. Mawwiage is what bwings us togewver today. Weddings for your Changelings can be private ceremonies or public RP events, depending on how the Changelings and guardians wish to handle arrangements. The Changelings are put on the chapel list and are allowed to stay in one of the fabulous honeymoon suites at Kelton. What...it has rooms other than the dorms. During this time, you will not be allowed to RP with your Changeling as they will be...well, a bit busy.

The Cabbage Patch. The happy couple will, with the help of the Kelton staff, contact the stork. No, there really is a stork. He's very nice. Moving on. The stork will then take the couple's children back to the fae realm and leave in their care Changelings of equal number (1-3). The guardians and Changelings can decide to keep the children to raise themselves, make arrangements with the Kelton staff for adoptions by friends, give the children to the orphanage to be placed with guardians in open adoptions (this make get you a refund!), or have closed adoptions (auctions) for the children, giving a portion back to Kelton Orphanage, depending on how much the auction went for.

Please be aware that if you sell a Changeling's child to not sell it for more than 8k, otherwise you'll be on our poo list. This does not apply to auctions. Auctions should be discussed with the Kelton staff before starting one.

Do the children know they're really fae creatures?
No, they don't. They have some vague sense that they're different. They don't really start figuring things out till they're in their adolescent stage, and even then they won't know what they really are till they're teens or adults.

What about these "late bloomers" you mentioned?
That just means that their changes don't take place till their teen stage. It depends on how they develop in their parent's care and some on what their true form is. Like normal children, some just develop later than others. It's completely natural and you shouldn't feel alarmed if your child isn't showing fae signs in their adolescent stage.

What if they don't show any signs in their teen stage?
Then you should talk with us immediately. This usually means they're not developing in a way that their fae self can show through. They can recover and develop normally, but they'll be a lot more behind than the others.

I notice there's a thing on the development about other stages.
That's right. It doesn't stop with the adults, but you'll have to wait and see what happens next.

Um...Bromley's adult from looks really different, art-wise.
Well, that's Jynk's fault. She did the children fast to have them ready to go. She'll be spending more time on their various stages as they develop. The art will look more like Brom's adult from from now on.

What's that blue thing with Bromley?
That's Lunchmeat, Jynk's pet demon. He's there because he hopped in the picture as it was being "taken" and to show that things that happen to the children will be represented in their certs. It's is highly recommended to save the images while you can. There won't be advanced warnings when they change, though some situations will be the exception to this.

Satyrs. They are half human and half beast; they usually have a goat's tail, flanks and hooves. While the upper part of the body is that of a human, they also have the horns of a goat. Often thought of as lustful, the majority are really just romantic..to several people..a lot. Strong, fast, and quite hardy, these fae are as skilled in fighting as they are dance, music, and the art of seduction.

More fae to be added as they're discovered.

The Common Room
The common room for the Kelton orphanage is actually the entryway to the building.

As you enter the orphanage, your eyes are probably drawn immediately to the large curved stairways leading to the 2nd floor walkway. Like the wall panelling and flooring, they are made of a dark mahogany wood. Some staircases are made for entrances. Looking at them recalls movies of the black and white era. If you have a flair for the dramatic, these staircases would fit in that mold. Between the staircases is a small sitting area, three worn leather chairs around a small table holding a fruit bowl. A set of book shelves sits behind them. Along the outter sides of the book cases are pools of shadows where the light seems to fade away. The flickering blue light cast by the odd gas lamps along the walls simply fails to penetrate these areas. If one were to look closely he or she could make out a door in the back of each area as well as a door along the side.

The main area of the common room sits empty for the most part. Acouple of small love seats near the door sit waiting to hold visitors as they come to see children. Some wooden cabinets sit along the side walls, near the main doors to the rest of the orphanage. On the left hand side in the corner sits an old full length mirror upon a wrought iron stand. A long cloth covers the face of the mirror, and a small sign on the cloth reads "do not touch, broken glass."
