Welcome to Gaia! ::

Mewling Lunatic

This is Salamander7's Mendel SL, and only she should be posting please. If you would like to learn more about the Mendels, visit the thread here.

> 10/4/04 - Update time for Tech! +1 strength, +1 int, and +1 speed for all this bug catching and research!
> 8/2/04 - I updated earlier but Gaia didn't post it, @_@. The server room seemed to get the only reaction, the reaction being positive. The rest were, again... neutral. The Mendel studied SG-1 very closely, but again - no preference. What an odd Mendel.
- In a burst of purple-gray powder, Technetium has emerged from her tube. Your care of her gave her +4% to certain stats!
> 7/28/04 - Again, mostly neutral reactions - except Vivaldi and the Java bit the Mendel seemed to pay even MORE attention to. The lights seemed to have no effect.

The Experiment

Codename: Mendels.
An accidental discovery by the mad scientist Puchiko resulted in the creation of life from raw elements. These creatures, born from test tubes of the raw element reacted with a top-secret chemical compound (rumoured to be derived from bubble-gum flavouring) are given to other trusted scientists and knowledgeable persons for scientific and psychological observation and research. Twenty-five specimens have been created to date, each from a different element. Appearances and behaviour vary widely, but they share the general characteristics of height and composition (elemental.)

The Researcher

Name: Salamander.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/kalgal/tech/sala.png" align=left>A university student in her early 20s. Currently completing an undergraduate degree in geology and languages; fluent in English and French, passable in Spanish and knows a smattering of Japanese and Russian. Has a solid background in the natural sciences including chemistry and geology. Prone to nervous outbursts and periods of intense movie and television-watching or music-listening. Officially creates websites for a living; unofficially, acts as researcher and caretaker for various experimental creatues and a part-time under-the-table archeologist.

The Test Subject's Living Space

Technetium sleeps on the researcher's desk on a small denim pillow made from old jeans and quilt batting. The Mendel does not appear to need any of the comforts of a bed and only uses the pillow at her researcher's insistance. The desk top also holds an extensive insect collection in clear plastic containers, a potted plant, and the resercher's laptop computer. Beside the laptop is a wall containing a window, from which hangs a blinds cord that reaches the floor. This serves as the subject's ladder to and from the desk top. The researcher's bed and bookcase are on the opposite wall.

Element Characteristics

Technetium (Tc)
Atomic Number: 43
Technetium has never been found in a natural form on Earth, and was the very first synthetically-produced element. It is produced from the decay of uranium, or the bombardment of molybdenum with deuterium nuclei. It is also present in stellar matter and certain types of stars. Technetium is also very radioactive.

Post-Emergence Experimental Findings

Concerning Technetium's Radioactivity:
Tech has discovered that the glowing blue holes in her 'armour' are quite radioactive inside, and she's informed me that both Iron and Lithium's fingers reacted in a manner consistent with radiation exposure to their elements. Her armour appears to act as a radiation shield.

Science Log: 07232004 21:37

Today I received one of the last 'first-generation' Mendels produced by Puchiko's lab - Technetium. Tech, as I've been calling it, is a purple powder in a test tube for the moment. I'm planning on running some experiments on it over the next two or three days to determine its likes and dislikes. I'm wondering what to do about the element's radioactivity right now - I'm not sure I want to sleep in the same room, but I'm too worried Dief will try to eat it, or that the Brannon egg will hatch and knock it over. I think I'll buy a small radiation counter tomorrow from the mine supply store.

--

I ran to the university and grabbed all of the galena samples from the mineral teaching sets (thank goodness it's the summer and no one will notice.) Galena is lead sulfide, and I piled the samples around the tube; hopefully that will provide enough protection until I find a more permanent solution (or if Tech doesn't actually emit radiation.)
Science Log: 07242004 12:32

I went to the mine safety supply store and picked up a small radiation counter. I've tie-wrapped it to Technetium's tube, and I'll check later to see if the tube emits enough radiation to be dangerous or not.

I stopped in at the Mendel labs and met two Mendels, Oxygen and Fluorine. Fluorine appears to have a strange human that does what she wants - the human girl is really attractive, but acts almost robot-like, and doesn't appear to be her researcher. I'm going to ask around to see if I can figure out what's up with that. I also met Ninja Vert and her tube, Calcium - it will be exciting when our Mendels emerge!

Since I was planning on taking the day off anyway, I've set up Tech in its holder on the coffee table and I'm going to watch a few movies and tv show episodes, and record its reactions. I can get used to a job that requires parking in front of the TV for a day...

After the intense movie and television marathon yesterday, I'm still no closer to finding out what Technetium likes and doesn't like. It didn't react one way or another to ANYTHING I showed it, but all of the powder in the tube spent the whole time pressed against the side closest to the TV... like it was almost trying to make sure it didn't miss a thing.

Which is pretty freaky. I'd better take Fluorine's advice and be careful of what else I show it, cause it's probably already a seriously messed up little Mendel if it was trying to analyse Coen brothers humour (The Big Lebowski.)

I'm going to try playing music for it tonight, and also reading a little. I was planning to read it parts of my favourite books, but I have a feeling it will just react the way it did to the movies - so I'm being sneaky and choosing really weird stuff, to see if I can elicit some kind of positive/negative reaction.

Tomorrow, I'll try out different kinds of lighting and different food smells - the rest of the usual tests to run.
Science Log: 07282004 18:40

Phew, I got a little busy for a few days and I've been neglecting Technetium's experiments. So without further ado...

Lighting Experiments
Bright sunlight (outdoors)
Moon/star light (outdoors)
Fluorescent lights
Red light bulb
Blue light bulb
Blacklight
UV light

The regular lightbulb in my room is my 'control' for Tech's normal state.

This experiment is going to require a little running around, but luckily I know an arcade who's pool table room has blacklights in it, and there is a handheld UV light in the petrology lab for checking mineral fluorescence at school.

Being an industrious little scientist is turning out to be a lot of fun!
Science Log: 07292004 07:37

Okay, I'm stumped. Technetium just refuses to show preference, even between a horribly obtuse (to me) book on architecture and Dr. Seuss. It also seems to be totally oblivious to its outside environment, judging from the lighting experiment. Maybe that means it won't care if my room's messy? Heh... sigh.

Its information-sponge reaction to everything I show it, though, has me suspecting I'm going to have a rather ferociously little academic Mendel on my hands. It's pretty cool that Tech seemed to be extra-insanely-interested in the Java programming textbook; I know some of the other Mendels have learned to use computers to type and even write e-mail, so maybe I can teach Tech to program. It seemed extra interested in Vivaldi, too, so maybe it has a mathematical mind. I've read that music majors make for good programmers, and vice versa.

That's a little scary, since I wouldn't exactly describe myself as mathematically minded...

Well, conjecture is a little pointless right now, since I'm still talking about powder in a test tube. I watched TV for awhile last night and it did the typical glued-to-side-of-tube thing again. I don't really listen to much classical music, but since Tech seemed to be more interested in that than anything else, I've downloaded a whole bunch of stuff by Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Brahms, loaded it on my iPod and put the little headphones beside Tech's tube.
Science Log: 07302004 09:13

Alright! I've decided to try out smells on Technetium today.

Smells Experiment
Baking cookies
Passion flower incense
Clean outdoor air
A server room

Heh, I couldn't resist that last one. I've always thought server rooms have a special kind of computery smell to them, and I am still chuckling over the idea of Tech being a geek.

I played Tech a ton of Mozart yesterday evening, including The Magic Flute. We listened to my shortwave radio as well; I tuned it to CBC Radio 1 in Toronto (a Canadian station, like NPR) and we listened to a couple shows on current affairs and world news. Tech may as well learn something about human things, even though it'll be pretty sheltered from all that for it's whole life.
Science Log: 08012004 22:19

Technetium remains enigmatic and in the tube. I've been slowly working through a large catalog of classical music, leaving it playing on the iPod when I'm not at home. I've also introduced Tech to the television series Stargate SG-1, and I've played a little bit of rock and jazz on my bass guitar for it. No positive or negative reactions as usual, just the typical listening pose.

Diefenbaker hasn't shown much interest in the tube; he gives it an occasional sniff on the way past, but that's about it. The Brannon still hasn't hatched, but the egg is glowing and rocking... I hope Tech will handle having another brand new creature around alright.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Tech got a motorcycle ride the other day. A friend of mine visited and took me around the city for fun, and I decided to take Tech (tied to a leather thong around my neck.) I'll have to see what it thought of that, because I'm kind of contemplating getting my own bike.
Science Log: 08022004 19:20

It happened so fast! Tech was just sitting in the tube, calm as usual, and I went to the kitchen to get a glass of iced tea - and when I came back, there she was! Standing on the dresser beside the empty tube with left-over powder all over the place. I just about dropped my glass. She's gorgeous, and purple, with a silver metal outfit on... it looks like something from a sci-fi TV show. She had her hands on her hips and looked like she was examining the room intently.

She turned her head to look at me. "Hello. Who are you? What am I?"

I set my glass down on the desk, and sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm Salamander, or Sal for short. I'm your researcher and caretaker. And you come from the element Technetium... you are a Mendel."

She seemed to ponder this. "So... my name is Technetium, correct?"

"Yes. Although I've been calling you Tech, since it's shorter."

"I believe I am... hungry," she said, putting her hand to her exposed stomach. "May I also see that machine?", pointing to my laptop on the desk.

Well, when I was hoping for a computer geek, I wasn't exactly expecting something straight out of the Star Wars movies. Her silver hair looked like metal, except it lay on her shoulders in a real hair sort of way. And she was acting like an android... or a Vulcan! This was going to be fascinating.

"Here, if you'll step on my hand, I'll bring you over to the machine - it's called a laptop. And I'll go find you some food."

When I came back with some bread and blueberries, the best Mendel-sized food I could find in my kitchen, Tech had her hands on the trackball and was watching the mouse pointer move around the screen. She had already figured out how to 'click' with the buttons and was trying to click on some of the designs on my wallpaper. As she ate a few blueberries I explained the basics of using the trackball and buttons, and she was playing with my ancient version of Encarta Encyclopaedia within minutes.

I brought her into the lab today to meet some Mendels. I'm going to see if I can teach her to write and type, so that she can share her own experience.

Lab RP: August 02, 2004 @ 18:30
In which Technetium visits the lab for the first time and meets Oxygen, Neon and Fluorine. She decides to help Fluo with her persocom programming.
Science Log: 08052004 15:20

Tech is brilliant. I can't get over how fast she learned to write (type, rather) and she could already half-read when she emerged from her tube. I found her lying on my laptop asleep this morning, instead of the bed I've made her on the dresser; when I woke her up and asked her why she was there, she told me she'd been reading my encyclopaedia software until 3 AM. She said the humming of the CPU fan lulled her to sleep! What a funny girl.

I think I'm going to start bringing her to work with me. She is really sharp, she watches me do stuff on the laptop and can copy me perfectly after only seeing it once or twice - so I think she might enjoy watching me work on the websites. I don't know if she'll understand the creative part of it, because she is really puzzled by how I 'decide' to use a certain colour or make a logo... my reply, "that's what I felt like doing", seems to make no sense to her. But I have a feeling she'll love the programming part of it.

That's another thing - I'm not sure 'love' is a good way to put it, more like she pays even fiercer attention to what I'm doing when she finds it more interesting. I haven't seen her smile yet. The only emotion I've seen her display is the very slightest bit of impatience with Pica, the ferret-goyle, who was trying to knock Tech over while she was using the laptop. And considering I've already taken to throwing stuffed animals at Pica to get her to stop pestering me...

Tech asks a ton of questions about facial and eye expressions, both from real people and in movies and stuff. I think she has difficulty reading them, although she definitely notices them - even very, very subtle stuff.

Well, Tech typed up her thoughts on her visit to the lab the other day so I'll post them now. I'm gonna show her how to type in this herself, so that she doesn't have to wait for me to do it.
Tech's Journal: 08052004 15:46

I visited the Mendel lab on Monday. I met Oxygen, Neon, and Fluorine. I queried Oxygen about the other Mendels and she informed me that there are more than 20, and less than half of them are able to fly. Some of them are building a staircase on one of the legs of the large table in the lab - this should be very useful for the non-flying Mendels. If Salamander returns to the lab with me, I wish to help. Fluorine has modified a robot in the shape of a human, which I find fascinating. I wish to help her discover all of the functions of this machine, as she informed me she does not know all of them at the moment.

Fluorine and Neon spoke politely to each other in the lab, but had very intriguing expressions on their faces when they did so; not like the normal expressions I have observed on other humans and Mendels so far. I asked Salamander about this, and she explained that Fluorine and Neon may have history between them that causes them to act this way. I do not fully understand this and have resolved to watch each of them closely when I see them next.

Salamander's Brannon creature hatched from her egg two days after I emerged from my test tube. She is called Pica, and is very active. She does not appear to be capable of remaining in one position for long. I am indifferent to her presence, although I feel strange when she is trying to distract me from the laptop. Salamander told me this was impatience, and that I should learn to tolerate Pica because it is in her nature to be energetic. I do not fully understand this but the strange feeling was minor and I therefore have chosen to ignore it.
