"Ah! Ah! Sunny! Cucu-whatsishisname's egg is GONE."
I blinked at Errol. "Oh?"
I came to look.
The egg was broken, and a few shards of eggshell remained around the room. I blinked.
"I didn't do it, I promise," Errol told me urgently.
"It looks like he hatched, is all. Calm down. Now, where did he go?"
We began a search, high and low, through the room. Errol peeked under the sofa as I investigated the top of a bookshelf.
He gave a shriek and fluttered back; I turned in alarm.
"Something bit me!" he gasped.
From beneath the couch emerged a blue dog-like creature. "You shouldn't have been sticking your beak where it doesn't belong," he said huffily.
"Cuchulainn, I presume?" I asked.
"Indeed." He gave me a baleful eye. "I was ridding your house of vermin. You should thank me."
"Vermin?"
"Large insectoid evil." He pushed forward, with his paw, a smushed bug.
I looked. "Oh, it's just a crane fly."
"Vermin!"
"They're ugly and creepy, but they eat mosquitoes. Apparently. Still, the sentiment is appreciated."
Cuculainn tossed his head. "I pledge my services to you, my lady."
"I... see. Okay, then."
Errol squawked. "You still bit me," he murmured mournfully.
